About all the military folks tonight:

Yes, Hillary is seen as hawkish by a lot of Dems.

Tonight is about crossing those hurdles, and one of the big hurdles for any woman – can she be Commander In Chief?

Can she take that 3 am phone call?

Do we trust her with the nuclear codes?

I still have my issues with her hawkishness.
I do trust her with the nuclear codes.

One thing I like to keep in mind, because many of us have those concerns … smart people (Democrats) who make it to the White House already know that our military personnel are a part of the “Defense” Department, not the “War” Department. That change was made after WWII (the big one), for a very good reason (forgotten by many RWNJs). I think she’ll have the judgment – once she gets in the Oval Office and is behind the desk, God willing – not to send anybody else’s sons and daughters into battle without a DAMN GOOD REASON. People do rise to the occasion, when they’re at that big desk. We can only hope.

It is hard to explain what this means to a woman of my age. Never thought this would happen. My granddaughter, Emily, will take it for granted that a woman can be president. You go girl!

What I am liking about her- is that she just seems more relaxed than 8 yrs ago. She seems way more comfortable and frankly, comforting, to me. I have worried about her “hawkishness” too. But I just don’t think POTUS would endorse her if he was worried about that.. and I trust him implicitly.

I agree. I believe she is ready now, I don’t think she was really ready last time. I so feel protective.

    • July 29, 2016 at 1:37 am

I have the same feeling of comfort. She seems to have completely come into her own. She looked like she was enjoying every minute of that speech. She was self-confident so that she could give so much credit to President Obama and be gracious and generous to Sanders without feeling the least bit threatened.

Chatting With Angela Rye About the Eye Roll Heard ’Round the World
    By Dayna Evans

Late last night on CNN Tonight, political commentator Angela Rye took part in a panel with conservative correspondent Kayleigh McEnany to discuss Hillary Clinton’s historic nomination as the first major-party female presidential candidate. And because many of us were already tucked into our beds by 1:30 a.m., we missed the sight of Rye’s eyes rolling into the back of her head at the sound of McEnany describing all of the great works to which Donald Trump has committed his life.

“I love that we have facts like Libya in disarray, Iraq in disarray, Syria in disarray, all under the tutelage of Hillary Clinton’s State Department,” McEnany said, prompting Rye to look aghast in the direction of Maria Cardona. Then host Don Lemon asked McEnany what she thought about Bill Clinton’s speech, in which he referenced Hillary’s “helping with school and adoptive parents.” “Well, that’s great,” McEnany responded. “You know, Donald Trump has done great things in his private time, too, for veterans, all across his foundation. He’s done great things, too. We’ve all done great things in our lives and I commend her for helping children, that’s a commendable thing.” Seated to McEnany’s left, Rye could barely contain her revulsion.

On the phone from Philadelphia, Rye told the Cut that her eye-rolling in this and other interviews is carefully calibrated so she doesn’t come off as “an angry black woman.” (In an earlier sparring match with McEnany on Anderson Cooper 360, Rye told the conservative, “I’m so glad you’re telling me what I should be appalled by.”) “For me, yesterday, it was such a historic moment. Regardless of whether you’re with Hill or you’re feeling the Bern, we had to appreciate the magnitude of that moment,” she told the Cut. “To switch gears from shattering glass ceilings from Michelle Obama’s dynamic speech to Cory Booker to Eric Holder the night before, to then talk about ISIS? Are we really doing this right now?

IMHO, I don’t see her really accomplishing a lot of what she said she will do in her first 100 days without more Dems in the House and taking back the Senate. The Repugs have hated on her for at least 2 decades. It’s been part of their damn DNA for years. I don’t see them doing a 180 and becoming all conciliatory and collaborative like come January 20, 2017.

From one of Andrew Sullvan’s Readers:

    9:38 p.m. A reader writes:

I live in Sydney, Australia. I’m not an American citizen but truly believe that this election is not just a matter for democracy in America, but for democracies across the world.

Here in Australia we have already seen the re-election of Pauline Hanson, a One Nation senator who has adopted both the rhetoric of Trump and his policy for banning all Muslim immigration. Last week we had two media personalities announce their support for such a ban, making their own stand against ‘political correctness’ whilst spouting their right to free speech.

His position as the Republican nominee has already had far reaching consequences on the global stage, and his toxicity is spreading. Americans need to remember that people across the world are looking to them to stop Trump, people who have no control over the outcome of the American election but who will have deal with the inevitable consequences. It’s astonishing and horrifying that he has got this far.

Here we go everyone; hold on to your butts! It is on and Hillary is leading the charge. Many of the things she said in her speech are things that PBO has said and has worked on; some he has even completed, but like anything, can have some tweaks here and there. I remember him at one time saying that there were few differences policy-wise between he, Joe, and Hillary back in the day. However, she will need a congress willing to work with her to get done all the things that she mentioned. If we do not gain enough seats, at the least, I hope that there will be enough repugs who will look at the near ruin that their obstruction has wrought and decide to really do their jobs.

Phuck no. They interviewed a white and black Bernie supporter about whether they had been persuaded. The black woman was eloquent in her acknowledgement of the revolution Bernie started and for her support for the nominee Hillary Clinton. The other lady was still angry and said she’s not sure who she will vote for in November. There were other whites interviewed who were clear they would vote for Clinton. They seemed truly committed to getting HIllary elected.

I loved the fact that she called out the NRA – that was huge! And she also specifically cited systemic racial injustice and reform of the penal system, including police. Perfect! I think she knocked that speech out of the park.
