Morning, Nerdy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your outstanding coverage of the Dem convention. It was simply the best!

  2. July 29, 2016 at 8:20 am

    Good Friday, Nerdy…TOD Family.

Thanks for all that you do to keep the village going, and for your extraordinary coverage of the Democratic convention.

  3. July 29, 2016 at 8:25 am

It is ironic to me that the Republicans hated their convention so much — even having some talk about liking the optimism of the Democratic convention — that they talking about what *they* consider to be Republican characteristics of the Dem convention…as if Democrats are not patriotic and never talk about love of country; as if Democrats don’t care about our military or first responders; as if Democrats don’t have religious values or values period.

Even Donald Trump doesn’t want to claim responsibility for planning the GOP convention anymore. (LOL)

Go ahead Republicans if it makes you feel better.

    • July 29, 2016 at 10:24 am

I know! Jeff Flake saying ‘those should have been our speeches” was the absolute frozen limit. In what universe does he think any of those speeches reflect any policy, thought, feeling, or value of the Republican party as it is now constituted? Their speeches exactly reflected who they are, just as ours reflect who we are.

Every woman in the world can stand taller today because of Hillary Clinton. With the possible exception of Queen Elizabeth, every woman has known and lived with discrimination from the day she was born. When I was born (not many years before Hillary herself), the women who took on the skilled jobs that helped win WWII were told to go home and have babies. In my youth women didn’t even get to keep their names. They were Mrs. John Smith, not Mary Smith and certainly could not use the surname they were born with. They were denied loans, credit cards or homeownership without a male signature. Our passion was dismissed as emotional, our dreams for achievement were mocked and our credentials, no matter how hard earned, were considered less consequential than a male’s. Hillary herself has been demeaned and caricatured all her life because she would not accept the pigeonholes she was assigned to. She spent decades pounding on the barriers that kept her down and then finally..finally..broke through. And with that final triumph, we were all set free.

The genius of the convention was the way the most potent masculine symbols–the loud voiced general, the Muslim couple whose husband did all the talking, the macho Latinos and sports superstars–supported her without hesitation. They were there to make the most hesitant of men feel comfortable with her leadership and strength. It was a brilliant strategy and it’s up to us to make sure it works.

“Every woman in the world can stand taller today because of Hillary Clinton.”

Jackie, I can truly understand how you feel, I felt the same way when Barack Obama was elected President that cold November night in 2008, the feeling is almost indescribable.

Brilliant observation/analysis/commentary and so on point. Add all of these limitations to also being an African-American woman and the portrait becomes even more chilling.

I totally agree that it was a genius stroke to have these male voices. Unfortunately, too many men only believe something when another man says it.

        July 29, 2016 at 9:33 am

Thank you, CEB. We are also a nation of immigrants and many cultures have repressive rules for the behavior of their daughters. Rebellion is not tolerated in some household and many can’t find a way out without submitting themselves to a father figure husband. That so many Muslim, Latino and Asian women now do so is a testament to their courage.

Already predictions that Trump will (try to) weasel out of the debates. He was afraid of debating the other 15 Republican candidates during the primary. We *know* he’s scared out of (what may be left of ) his mind to go one on one with Hillary Clinton.

Well that’s interesting. How different are her policies from PBO’s?

    • July 29, 2016 at 8:55 am

swbluega, I was thinking the same thing. Alot of Hillary’s policies are POTUS policies. Here is another thing people don’t act like they have any sense, things have important under President Obama, but think how much better things would be if it wasn’t for the obstruction of the do nothing Republicans. But I will say to anyone this President has done a dam good job.

    • 35 jackiegrumbacher
      July 29, 2016 at 9:14 am

SW, it is only BECAUSE of President Obama that HRC could even articulate these policies without being dismissed as a lunatic. Even eight years ago, PBO couldn’t openly discuss gun control or same sex marriage or free college education without being laughed out of the room. Our president carved the way though the forest, slowly bringing down tree after tree of prejudice. And he had the great big mountain of a depression and a war to deal with as well. As he said to Hillary, I’ve accomplished everything I could do, but there’s still so much more and I have ‘tee’d’ it up for my successor. Hillary knows this and so did every Democrat in that convention hall. PBO could take the race so far and now he has to hand it to the next relay runner to complete the race.

      • 36 jackiegrumbacher
        July 29, 2016 at 9:23 am

By the way, did you ever see the grainy video from the 30’s when Jesse Owens participated in a relay race at the Olympics in Nazi Germany? He was one of several runners, but he was so amazingly fast that the US team was way ahead by the time he passed on the baton. That’s out president. The race goes on, but it was have been unwinnable without him.

      • July 29, 2016 at 9:47 am

Exactly, JackieG. The starting point for HRC has progressed so much further than where PBO started. If she is able to accomplish a lot of what she hopes to, it’s because she’s not having to basically start from scratch.

        • 38 CEB
          July 29, 2016 at 10:16 am

All of this, but as I said on an earlier post, PBO once said that he, Hillary and Joe had many of the same policy positions. We have had a deep field of talented democrats for a while, but it took Bill and Barack to show them how to win and it took Barack to show how to sustain and succeed despite relentless opposition. All of the shit that Hillary has been through makes her a formidable candidate, and God willing, 45th president. If Trump thinks that calling her names and trying to insult her will be enough to make her cede the contest and leave the field, he has deluded himself. There is not anything he can say that will top or cause more wounds than the slings and arrows that have been sent her way. He better view how she handled all of those men who interrogated her for hours last year; Hills was not moved.

      • July 29, 2016 at 10:37 am

I believe he has not only paved the way for her policy-wise, but also emotionally. I believe one of the reasons she is seen as so stiff and unforthcoming is that as a woman, she would have been dismissed out of hand as too emotional if she had allowed a tear to fall and too motherly and home-bound if she acted in the context of her family and because she devoted herself to women’s and children’s issues. But for the past 8 years we’ve had a Commander-in-Chief who has not been afraid to shed a tear, who has put his family front and center of his life, and who has championed women and child all over the world. I think this freed her at the convention to show who she is as a woman without being dismissed as ‘overly emotional’. President Obama has never shied away from the more ‘female’ side of his character, she can claim her womanliness without damaging the perception of her ‘manly’ strength.

I just now watched this speech……tears flowed. I thought of my Muslim students, who have worked so hard and put up with so much to be here and study. They are my friends as well as students, and I admire them. How this couple had the courage to get up in front of all those people amazes me. How powerful when he brought out a copy of the Constitution! I just do not understand the hate in people’s hearts as evidenced so blatantly in the R.convention. I was so pleased with ours…..a positive, inclusive message from beginning to end.

    • July 29, 2016 at 9:07 am

Trump your son is running around killing animals for no reason other then because you like it.. This Muslim parents son gave his life for this country. When he pull out that U.S. Constitution, and ask Trump have he read it, all I could do was stand and clap my hands. Wow.

This is great news and every community should thank those newly registered voters and make sure they do vote on November 8. If your local county party doesn’t send a ‘welcome’ letter to the newly registered, ask them to think about doing so and offer to write the text. It’s so important for new voters to feel welcome to the party.

GM, TOD ohana. still feeling so uplifted, but emotionally exhausted. Got my mojo back from all that I saw and heard (even the BernieBrats did not annoy as much because they were Handled!). In my mental loop is the speech that Michelle gave during the 2008 campaign in which she said we are not afraid.
These conventions showed that there are two Americas: a small part that is filled with bitterness, hate, greed, and incompetence and a much greater part that is filled with hope, positivity and possibility, diversity and a celebration of it, not a mere tolerance. An America filled with smart and talented people who are working hard to deal with its challenges; an America that looks at its unfinished business in regard to equality with an unflinching eye while moving forward everyday to finally make it so for everyone. Like Barack and Joe said, I am more optimistic than I have ever been that we can complete the unfinished work of this country.

More democrats, especially those with a wider influence, have finally gotten that spine that former Governor Deval Patrick talked about during the 2012 convention. We did not allow the republicans to “bully” PBO out of office (though his own skill and character had most to do with this), and we are not afraid of Trump and his frothing minions and opportunistic party officials. We have a standard bearer who has been there and done that; who has been ‘buked and scorned, as the old folks say and survived to thrive. Greatest irony that two of the most abused in our culture, a Black man and a woman of humble beginnings, democrats, have been called upon to save this country.

    July 29, 2016 at 10:11 am

Good morning all. I slept well last night, knowing that DT is not going to be the next president. A very calming effect from the convention.

Had some thoughts also. Hillary said that when you break a barrier for one group, you break it for all…speaking of a woman becoming president being good for our daughters AND sons. So…..I worked with this thought. If Hillary had been nominated eight years ago, she would NOT have been elected. The country would not have elected a woman for president. The white male was still considered the only possibility. Barack Obama by the power of his personality, clarity, organizing, charisma, and so much more won, and broke the barrier of white male presidential privilege. He was a male…..although a man of color. Breaking the white male privilege was a bigger deal than we realized at the time, I think. We have seen the sad results for eight years, BUT, that barrier was broken forever. Think about it…..the President was a man of color, the VICE president was a white male. That was earth shaking for a number of people. It has taken PBO eight years to begin to receive the recognition and respect he has deserved since the beginning. People are seeing that the caricatures….or cartoon as Bill said about Hillary, were not true. He broke the barrier for us all.

So, now, since he broke the white male only president barrier, Hillary, a woman can become president. This is a slow process. She has the good fortune to build on the foundation he built. She knows it, I’m sure. Without him going before, she would not, could not be where she is today.
This time, too, a white male, will be the VICE president……two times in a row, that is remarkable. We are indeed change makers and we are the revolutionaries.

I read somewhere recently….when one has grown up and lived with privilege, equality feels like oppression. Certain white males are feeling this, sadly for them. They see life as zero-sum……they don’t realize there is enough for all. President Obama will only continue to grow in the eyes of the country and the world. He has changed forever the trajectory of the country. Now we have to get the support for Hillary, we never were able to get for him.

Good morning, carolyn. I agree with you on all of this. It was only apparent to me in hindsight, this breaking of barriers by PBO …which enabled Hillary to be here now. Great observation.

Also, the thought that to those born to privilege, equality can seem like oppression…was mentioned in a tweet here last week and that has stuck with me since I read it, even to the point of me randomly repeating it aloud in the car last week:) Such a specific and spot on nugget of truth. I love this thought, it explains so much with few words to cloud the message.

Agree with everything you said here Carolyn, with one addition. For so many who have had limited exposure, change is just plain scary. This, I think, is why you see such a discrepancy with rural voters versus urban voters. I would include in that small town voters. One of the most shocking things I discovered when I moved to Texas is that there are a TON of people and young ones (high school age) who have NEVER been out of state! Think about that! When you are so limited in your exposure to the world, the idea of a black man as president just was incomprehensible. But because PBO broke that barrier–twice–Hillary can now be elected.

I have no clue who these Bernie Delegates were from California but they do not represent a lot of the regular DEMS I’ve met in the past. We are going to do this for US and for PBO, we must not let him down. Good morning TOD!!! Nerdy, what can any of us say to you to show you just how much we appreciate everything you are doing to keep us going here? THANK YOU, THANK YOU! You have been nothing short of astonishing. So thrilled to wake up and think we have a woman–who is likely to win–as nominee for President!

As to all those conservative commentators out there screaming about the Dems “taking” their “patriotic” themes, just one more thing they missed under PBO while so they were so busy trashing him. None of this is new. Did they miss all the work PBO has done on behalf of vets and the mililtary? Did they miss all the work Michelle did on behalf of military families? As Sarah would say, ” you betcha!”

So busy trashing PBO for taking troops out of Irag, so busy trashing Michelle for “forcing” healthier food on our kids, that they totally overlooked all the work for the military families and vets. This did not happen for the convention, this has been happening for 8 years, and they are just now seeing the results.

As to PBO’s speech the other night, for those of us who have been paying attention, the ONLY thing new was the way he characterized Trump as a demagogue. All of the rest that supposedly were some “new conservative values” have been their since he first came on the national stage in 2004. But their utter hatred for him blinded them to all the good he has been doing these last 8 years. So glad it is now being thrown in their faces. I hope they choke on it.

But most importantly, I hope it leads to Hillary’s win in November. As Dems, we have sooooo much to be proud of!

They mistake the shadow for the substance. They wear red white and blue, flag pins, ‘support our troops’ ribbons and constantly yell “America is the greatest!” and think that makes them patriotic. They don’t care what he does for troops; if truth be told, they undermine the troops at every turn. Patriotism means never criticizing the U.S., demanding that all other countries obey our will, and splashing the flag all over everything.

The GOP probably think: Oh darn! We did not have enough military people with speaking positions, or enough red, white and blue balloons falling down at our GOP convention.

One other morning thought that has been roiling around in my head. Of course, we have been subject to endless commentary about the “wrong track” numbers these last two weeks, but even more so this week. WHEN is it going to occur to these idiots that the GOP controls both branches of Congress and the majority of state legislatures?????? Perhaps the “wrong” track the country sees us at is related to this little fact rather than the fact a Dem has been sitting in the WH. That is certainly true for me.

Yeah. Kind of indicative of their level of intelligence, if you ask me. Farting and coloring time is what we all did back in Kindergarten. Also wearing similar colored shirts when out on a field trip, so no one got lost. 😎

Trump: Republicans ‘have no choice’ but to vote for me
    By Jesse Byrnes

Donald Trump said Thursday that Republicans wary of his campaign have little choice but to vote for him anyway.

“If you really like Donald Trump, that’s great, but if you don’t, you have to vote for me anyway. You know why? Supreme Court judges, Supreme Court judges,” Trump said at a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

    • July 29, 2016 at 11:57 am

I vaguely remember a senator saying something about waiting to see who the nominees will be.

So now that HRC IS the nominee, is there a remote possibility that there will at least be a vote — maybe even a confirmation — on Garland?

      • 125 carla4obama
        July 29, 2016 at 12:49 pm

No confirmation as long as there is a chance of Trump still winning in Nov. If Hillary wins in Nov. then they will get Garland on track because they know he is a moderate…they are fearful that Hillary may decide to but her own nominee in and her nominee would be more to the left of Garland.

Six current and former Michigan state employees have been charged in a widening criminal investigation into the Flint water crisis, according to a source close to the investigation.
The six people face charges ranging from willful neglect of duty to conspiracy for allegedly withholding information from the public about lead contamination of the city’s drinking water.

A blessed Friday to the TOD family, the perfect example of diversity. I pray for a rewarding day for everyone.
Hillary Clinton was outstanding in her acceptance speech. However, since most of her intentions are those of PBO’s, it is clear that she plans to build on the foundation he has laid, thus preserving his legacy (I hope).
I too say a hearty thank you to NW for the extraordinary (to use one of PBO’s favorite adjectives) work you have put in to bring the convention through TOD to us. You are simply the best. Thank you also for allowing Chips to take the time she needs to recuperate. I pray that each day provides her with the comfort and strength she needs.

This Jackie Kennedy quote was spot on, too:)

“The danger which troubled my husband was that war might be started not so much by the big men as by the little ones.

While big men know the needs for self-control and restraint—little men are sometimes moved more by fear and pride. If only in the future the big men can continue to make the little ones sit down and talk, before they start to fight.”

Sometimes I think when people lash out so horribly it is to try to make themselves feel better, because they know, in this case, that she has, long ago, gone down the wrong path, and with no way of getting off of it; that she is stuck there for the rest of her life. And she hates herself for it.
Pity for others can be much more effective than hatred.

2009 after the Inauguration of PBO, the republicans and their over lords met to plan the destruction of the new president and the hopeful country that he served. 2016, Cantor and Boehner gone; Cruz and Kaish; gone; little man Rubio and Jeb! back to Florida and obscurity (no more Bushes for real); corporate sponsors and big money donors on the sidelines; high profile Republicans no-shows at their convention and others disavowing their candidate; networks losing viewership to the internet; yellow journalism overtaken by the true journalism on social media (they even went so far as to try to strong arm the Facebook creator because they could not shape the news there; moderate Republicans have awakened to a party that they no longer recognize and the man to whom they did everything to destroy is not only more popular than he has ever been, but has also passed the baton to a woman that they hated almost as much as they hated him. The cherry on the top is that this same woman is the only one who can save them from the horror that they built.

    From Paul Krugman:

So if it seems strange to you that these days Democrats are sounding patriotic while Republicans aren’t, you just weren’t paying attention. The people who now seem to love America always did; the people who suddenly no longer sound like patriots never were.

I think this goes to the judgement of an entire party. The Republicans, even now, still support this man EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW HE IS A DANGER. This needs to be pointed out for those that still don’t get it. How do support this trainwreck and be a patriot American? The answer is, you can’t.

All Trump did was to take advantage of the ugliness that has always been there and dragged it out into the unflinching light. They have been building this since Nixon. Their greed and privilege and hate and bigotry so blinded them that they did not realize that the majority of the country has moved on. American looks like the audience and the speakers of the DNC convention. America looks like Barack, Michelle, Joe, Hillary, Tim and all of those who surround them.

Holder: Trump May Lack ‘Intellectual Heft’ Needed To Be President
    By CAITLIN MACNEAL
    Published JULY 29, 2016, 8:48 AM EDT

Former Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday night suggested that Donald Trump may not be “very smart” because he “sees everything in black and white terms.”

CBS News’ Charlie Rose asked Holder about his Wednesday comment questioning whether Trump has “the gray matter” necessary to be president.

“You mean he’s not smart enough to be president? Rose asked.

“Yeah, I wonder,” Holder responded. “I sometimes think that he hides behind a certain bravado to hide a lack of substance that he has.”

“A person this far along in the process, I think we would know a little more about what his plans are. We’d know more about who his mentors might have been, who his intellectual guides might be. And I don’t have any sense that there is any of that to him,” he continued. “He seems to me to be a very shallow man.”

Another observation from the Democratic Convention (btw it was democratic in the true meaning of the word) is that PBO was teaching us how to say goodbye. He showed us that we would not be lost, that we would not have to fear because we had each other; that we were and are the ones that we have been waiting for. The way that he, Michelle, and Joe showed their full-on support of Hillary helped all of us to find our way to fully doing so ourselves. For many months, I have had the song, “Teach them how to say Goodbye” from Hamilton (related to George Washington’s Farewell Speech) in my head; sometimes it made me cry as Chris Jackson did when he sang it at the White House and other times it gave me hope. We are all learning how to let go and to go forward.

I had a thought last night while Chelsea was speaking. When Hillary becomes Madam President, she will need someone to play “First Lady”, so I bet they move Chelsea and her family into the living quarters that Mother Robinson currently reside in so Chelsea will be readily available.
