Lee Baca was the L.A, County Sheriffs head man whose department was caught lying to FBI and moving a person of interest around the jail to keep him from spilling the beans on the Sheriffs Dept.

Morning everybody. Congratulations, Betsy. We were off celebrating my husband’s 69th birthday. He wanted a politics-free zone for a long weekend. Now let’s hope Hillary’s bounce maintains and gets higher.

Thanks Judith. I had a “politics-free” day yesterday and just read light murder mysteries for the entire day. I’m off for the summer and this has been so great to have such a luxury: time to read. I will be starting “Team of Rivals” tomorrow, and after that Ron Chernow’s “Hamilton” that I got for my birthday from my hubby. I consider that work reading and I have taken the entire month of July to consciously not do any “work reading” and have a real break. I’m glad I did.

      August 2, 2016 at 12:40 pm

i listened to the first 2 minutes of the Thom Hartmann show and he starting by talking about how the Singapore government was one of the most oppressive that we support. I couldn’t listen to anymore. I don’t know much about it. But I am so tired to him (Hartmann) always putting down whatever this President is doing. I’ll have to do some more checking into it.

I really like the answer the President gave about the TPP. I’ll have to keep it close.

I’ve stopped listening to Thom Hartman. He was a Bernie guy for a long time even in 2008. I used to think he was smart but he is a pundit with an agenda. He was raised a Rethug and I believe he is a registered Independent. I don’t know if he was ever a Democrat but he is always telling people who are Democrats to take over the party if you don’t like how things are going. He never tells that to the Rethugs.

I agree. I just still every now and then try to listen again but I can never get thru it. Should learn by now but I so want there to be other people on the radio that are sane. Stephanie I love to listen to because you can laugh too. We are so behind in the radio personalities.

Pope Francis has set up a special commission to study whether women will be allowed to become deacons in the Catholic Church.

The issue has historically troubled the Church, with many opposing the appointment of females.

The commission of seven men and six women will study the issue, and look into the historical role of women in the early years of the Church.

Deacons are a clergy rank one below priest.

They are ordained ministers who can preach or preside over weddings and funerals, but cannot celebrate Mass.

Supporters say women are poorly represented within the church and that appointing female deacons would give women greater sway in decision-making.

The Pope first remarked in May that he was willing to set up a commission to study the issue.

He had told senior members of women’s religious orders he was open to the issue of considering female deacons: “It would be useful for the Church to clarify this question. I agree.'”

The Vatican also clarified that the Pope was not considering the possibility of ordaining women priests.

Currently all Catholic priests and deacons are male. Priests must be celibate, but deacons can be married men.

The wheels of the Catholic church move so slowly it’s as if they traveled by oxcart, instead of cars. How many millennia is it going to take to get a female pries?. Enough is enough. You do not need a male organ to consecrate the host much less be a deacon!!!!!

Far be it from Obama to miss an opportunity to push a little on their obstinate defiant disorder. Or is it reverse psychology. Amazing man. This will effect the seats in the legislature as people don’t know how they will answer who is now running as the head of their party.

I’m watching Pres. Obama’s conference and I want to cry because we will never have a BRILLIANT, intelligent, diplomatic GODSEND of a president like this again. Warren and Sanders have greatly disrespected Pres. Obama ….they should sit back and LEARN how to govern, how to lead, and what a REAL PROGRESSIVE is… who makes progress.

This is a president who knows how to work with cultures around the world. A president who time and time demonstrates that he knows what he is doing (as evidenced by being elected TWICE with a coalition of voters of ALL demographics). He TOLD Sanders and Warren he had negotiated the TPP in a way that would benefit Americans. Yet, they looked down on him as if he is too stupid to know what he is doing as if they are better than him. He still has not earned their trust. They still will not give him the benefit of doubt. He still is not privileged enough to earn the trust of some Democrats even though he had NOTHING to do with NAFTA.

  15. August 2, 2016 at 12:27 pm

Another masterful press conference. I really like PM Lee – he’s sharp, honest, direct and good natured. Loved all the questions and answers on TPP. I really DO hope POTUS has a forum after the election to talk about it. People need to hear the truth.

    • 48 Claire
      August 2, 2016 at 12:35 pm

And the Democrats will ignore him. Guaranteed after today’s conference his own party won’t even discuss the topic of the conference. They won’t have his back. They’ll be focused on trump. The rest of the world will be focused on TPP. sometimes I feel like Pres. Obama has to be a one man party.

      • August 2, 2016 at 12:37 pm

He talked about having the forum after the election, “when the dust settles.”

        • 50 Claire
          August 2, 2016 at 12:51 pm

Oh I know, but you won’t hear Democrats building the ground work for that discussion. You won’t hear them making rational arguments for having a discussion. They act like they are all for getting rid of it. Then when he tries to have a discussion anyone who acts as if they are willing to listen will be called “traitors” , sell outs , corrupt. That conference showed the rationality, reason, and openness surrounding TPP. Everyone acts like Pres. Obama has been secretly trying to betray their trust. Democrats need to be out there now letting people know that they are open to listening. But, it’s like we have a tea party wing that demands that everyone swear allegiance to them or we’re traitors to what they have declared to be the party principles.

Another one of the many things that our POTUS and FLOTUS do better than any other First Couple that I have observed is the grace with which they perform the continental two cheek greeting. No awkward,” should I or shouldn’t I,” no bumping noses,. none of that awkward body positioning that I have seen some do who are really uncomfortable with any type of closeness. I just love watching them interact with foreign guests.

PS. I hope PM Lee brought another of those shirts for PBO even though he said that he would not wear one here. He looked beautiful and natural in “the Shirt” unlike everyone else who was there. For a man who cares little for clothing, our PBO wears everything well.

Obama Just Said What Nearly Every Republican is Thinking
    by Martin Longman
    August 2, 2016 1:45 PM

President Obama absolutely blistered Donald Trump today, and the interesting thing about what he said is that there’s really nothing debatable about any of it. The Republicans absolutely know that Obama is correct, down to the smallest detail.

“I think what’s been interesting is the repeated denunciations of his statements by leading Republicans,” he said in a press conference. “The question I think they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him? What does this say about your party that this is your standard-bearer? This isn’t a situation where you have an episodic gaffe. This is daily and weekly where they are distancing themselves from statements he’s making.”

Obama wondered what comment from Trump would actually force Republicans to withdraw their support for the Republican nominee.

“There has to be a point in which you say this is not somebody I can support for President of the United States, even if he purports to be a member of my party. The fact that that has not yet happened makes some of these denunciations ring hollow. I don’t doubt their sincerity. I don’t doubt they were outraged about some of the statements that Mr. Trump and his supporters made about the Khan family,” he said. “But there has to come a point in which you say somebody who makes those kinds of statements doesn’t have the judgment, the temperament, the understanding to occupy the most powerful position in the world because a lot of people depend on the White House getting stuff right.”

He noted that the denunciations coming from Republicans differ from the typical policy disagreements between Democrats and Republicans.
