Good morning and effusive THANK YOUs, Nerdy Wonka.

And today more good news about employment:

What would our economy look like if one political party had not chosen ECONOMIC TREASON AGAINST THIS COUNTRY JANUARY 20, 2009?

I know! Every time they complain about slow anemic growth it needs to be countered with “thanks to your obstruction” with enumeration.

It’s also a spit in the eye to Republicans who wanted to run on a failed economy that only they could fix. Even the economy is on the President’s side because his policies were smart and actually worked, despite the spiteful obstruction of the Republican House and Senate.

      • August 5, 2016 at 9:09 am

and because of lies told by the GOP backed up by most of the media….along with the DEMs running from the President….many Americans still have fear and a sense of anxiety…the travesty of that…

Any Democrat who followed President Obama into the White House was always going to be subject to unflattering comparisons to the incomparable man, leader, father and all around cool, brilliant, compassionate human being that he is. Hillary Clinton is visually his polar opposition–female, shortish, older and pretty much lacking in visual coolness. But if there’s one thing PBO has taught us it’s to see with our hearts and minds as well as our eyes. In Hillary Clinton he sees his intellectual and emotional heir. He knows her, be believes in her and he will fight for her to carry on his legacy. Even if I had not formed an independent judgment about supporting her, this alone, with or without the monstrous excrescence that is Donald Trump, would motivate me to do everything in my power to get her elected. Work for her because you respect and admire her or work for her because you love our President because that’s exactly what he’s asked us to do– “work for her as you did for me.”

There is a story out there that is said that Melania Trump worked here as an illegal immigrant in 1995 and somewhat 1996 before she finally got a work visa. This could bring back a legitimate discussion on why we need to move forward on comprehensive immigration reform and highlight the hypocrisy of the GOP and the Republican candidate for president.

The grand opening in Pensacola last evening for Hillary was very good roll out. It started at 6, I get off work at 6 and so, I missed the speakers. But it was packed. When I rolled up, almost everyone I saw leaving had yard signs. Others bought bumper stickers, t-shirts. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a cross section of people there.

Wonderful long interview with two historians, Evan Thomas and David MacCullough, on this election and on the hard-to-match presidency of POTUS44.

“Mr. McCullough: I thought President Obama’s speech was a landmark presidential address. It was right up there with the best of Kennedy. He has authority without braggadocio, and the fact that he is such a gentleman, through and through, came across.”

Former CIA chief: Putin recruited Trump as an ‘unwitting agent’ of Russia

For former acting CIA Director Michael Morell, Donald Trump does not have what it takes to be commander in chief.

In a New York Times op-ed published Friday, the 33-year agency veteran notes that he has been heretofore private with his political preferences and is registered as neither a Democrat nor a Republican.

“No longer. On Nov. 8, I will vote for Hillary Clinton. Between now and then, I will do everything I can to ensure that she is elected as our 45th president,” wrote Morell.

Morell also suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin has successfully co-opted Trump’s message in complimenting the political neophyte and getting exactly what he wanted in return with more praise even in light of his strongman tendencies toward journalists and dissidents.

“In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation,” Morell wrote.

      Good article. Bottom Line.

“”Even more important, the character traits he has exhibited during the primary season suggest he would be a poor, even dangerous, commander in chief,” Morell said, naming Trump’s “obvious need for self-aggrandizement, his overreaction to perceived slights, his tendency to make decisions based on intuition, his refusal to change his views based on new information, his routine carelessness with the facts, his unwillingness to listen to others and his lack of respect for the rule of law. The dangers that flow from Mr. Trump’s character are not just risks that would emerge if he became president. It is already damaging our national security.”

That’s pretty much all you need to know. Morning, amk:)

WOW!!!! Blockbuster info…seniors are literally hurting themselves with this organization if this is true.

It was very recently revealed that AARP is a supporting member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the Koch brothers’ organization dedicated to, among many other things, destroying Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. It is also noteworthy that another Koch privatization-advocacy group and a sister organization of ALEC, the State Policy Network (SPN), is extremely active in abolishing pensions for public workers including police officers, school teachers, prison guards, city workers and firefighters. Suffice it to say that like their funding machine the Koch brothers, neither ALEC nor SPN will rest until Social Security and public retirement accounts are abolished and the concept of financial security in old age are a distant memory. It is why the revelation that AARP is a paying member of ALEC is beyond abominable and brands the phony retiree advocates as stunning hypocrites. Any one of the 37-plus million paying AARP members should be up in arms and outraged beyond comprehension.

Of course, AARP is not going to confess to its hypocrisy in supporting ALEC while claiming to lobby and advocate for seniors, Social Security, Medicare, and lower prescription drug costs. Instead, the retiree-supported non-profit is taking a page out of lying Republicans’ book and claimed it supports ALEC to get closer to ALEC legislators and attempt to determine how they are helping seniors. After the not-unexpected outcry, AARP released a statement……

Before I cancel my membership, I will do a little investigating and asking questions. This article, while appearing to be quite damaging, it just the author’s opinion on a political news blog. August 5, 2016 at 1:46 pm

Okay, did my research and for the moment, I’m going to remain with AARP… I have no problem with their explanation (see statement below)

AARP was a “Trustee’s Level” sponsor of ALEC’s 2016 annual meeting held July 27-29 in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to a program obtained by the Center for Media and Democracy. Attendees also each received “an AARP branded portable USB power pack” at registration.[3] After “a torrent of protests from members and advocacy groups,” as described by the L.A. Times, AARP announced on August 5, 2016 that it would not renew its membership.[4][5]

The L.A. Times contacted AARP for a statement about its relationship to ALEC:

On Monday [August 1, 2016], in response to our queries, AARP gave a bit more detail on its relationship with ALEC while reiterating, “AARP’s engagement with ALEC is NOT an endorsement of the organization’s policies either past or present.” It specifically disavowed support for ALEC model bills seeking a constitutional amendment for a balanced federal budget, which is a direct attack on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; the repeal of the Affordable Care Act; nor the other model legislation posted on ALEC’s website. AARP has advocated in opposition of these proposals in the states and in Congress and will continue to do so.” ALEC hasn’t responded to our request for comment.
AARP’s statement acknowledged that it paid a fee to ALEC in 2016 to provide “an opportunity to engage with state legislators and advance our members’ priorities from a position of strength at ALEC’s annual meeting.” AARP added, “given that Republicans control one or more chambers in 39 of the nation’s 50 state legislatures, we believe having a seat at the table at the ALEC annual meeting was necessary to our mission of representing the interests and needs of people 50-plus and their families.”

Thank you, GGail, for taking the time to do this important research for all of us. I will also keep my membership for now, but will pay closer attention to this aspect of AARP. And I will tell others of this info so they can keep watch as well.

    Welcome to Sidewire
We’re building a home for the best conversations on the internet. Instead of sifting through noisy social networks, Sidewire is a place where you can find insiders and experts breaking down the day’s news in public chats.

What’s a public chat? Combine the fun, informal tone of your group texts with expert analysis from people you trust. The result is authentic, informed conversation about the things that matter most.

The Problem: Today’s Internet is optimized for Noise
Information is everywhere. With the advent of social media, the world has added more than a billion new authors of content. Just as available information and the number of new authors has proliferated, the relationship between experts and content has dissolved. As information has become more accessible, informed debate has not. Nowhere is this problem more glaring than the state of American political discourse — so that’s where we’re starting.

If we keep talking about it maybe we can come up with a solution that makes everyone happy, and doesn’t put undue stress on any one person. Just so hard to think about not “chatting” with all of you each day.

    http://thinkprogress.org/health/2016/08/05/3805388/zika-late-abortions-poll/

As the threat of homegrown Zika spreads, Americans are getting more realistic about abortion regulations.
A poll conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health and STAT last month found that while 61 percent of Americans oppose abortions after 24 weeks, a majority would actually support late-term abortions in the case of microcephaly — a condition in which a baby is born with a underdeveloped brain and skull. Microcephaly, found in infants whose mothers have been infected by Zika, is only detectable after 24 weeks of pregnancy.

    http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2016/08/05/3805368/jobs-report-july-2016/

The economy added 255,000 jobs in July while the unemployment rate remained at 4.9 percent, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Analysts had expected 180,000 jobs to be added.

July’s job growth was driven by professional and business services (70,000), health care (43,000), finance (18,000), leisure and hospitality (45,000), and food and drinking places (21,000). Public sector employment also increased by 38,000 jobs.

The two previous months were also revised upward, with 18,000 more jobs than previously reported. May was revised from a paltry 11,000 up to 24,000, while June’s blockbuster number of 287,000 went up to 292,000. Job gains have averaged 190,000 a month for the last three months. In total, the economy has added 1.3 million jobs since December of last year.

While the labor force participation rate remained unchanged in July, the number of people unemployed for a short period — less than five weeks — fell by 258,000.
Wages ticked upward in July with an 8-cent increase, bringing the growth in average hourly earnings over the last year to 2.6 percent.

Sad news to relate about a friend of ours. Some of you who are in touch with him via other venues may already have heard, but Yardarm asked me to let the TOD family know that his oldest son passed away this week, following a tragic pool accident involving Yardarm’s young great grandson. The boy and his grandfather were enjoying each other’s company at a pool, when the boy got in trouble in the water and needed rescuing. Yardarm’s son jumped in to save his grandson but apparently may have experienced a stroke or heart attack (they are awaiting word) and was soon in trouble himself. Onlookers got the boy out of the water, administering CPR, and he was taken to the hospital. But they were unable to save Yardarm’s son, who passed away at the hospital. Although he is in mourning, Yardarm is getting through this with his own resoluteness and the love and support of his family and, I’m sure, a multitude of friends, near and far. I wrote a poem for him about the relationship of the three, and he asked me to also post that here, along with the news.

To those of you who wish, please join me in sending our collective love to Yardarm, at this sad time, and our thoughts and prayers for his extended family. He also sends his regards to Chips and her family, because he’s thinking of her (as we all are)!

    Thinking of others,
    The son
    Honored the father
    Who would have done
    The same.

    The grandson lives
    In their sweet shadow
    Still hearing the stories
    Knowing he was
    And is
    Loved.

    And that is life
And it is what it is.
    And I believe God ~
    God welcomed the hero
    Welcomed the hero home.

Thank you Jacqueline Oboomer, for making TOD aware and for the poem.

Yardarm, I am so sorry that you have to go through this. My heart goes out to you and your grandson, who I hope is feeling better and will recover completely. Know that we are sending you love and light at this most difficult time.

I am so glad you were able to reconnect with your son, and to have that time together. My wish is for the veil between the worlds to part just enough, so that you and he can both know that each of you is alright and that love continues.

(Thanks. What I posted for Yardarm was a little confusing since there are actually four generations – he said it was his great grandson who was rescued. Just a small detail, because the emotions are the same for him, I’m sure!)

They always want to run to the GOP once things are fixed then run to DEM to fix the mess again. I hope people are getting smart that they can’t vote for President hoping everything will be ok and stop voting in the midterms.

AARP Drops ALEC Amidst Pressure Campaign

BAM! Now they have to be sure to institute REAL policies that help and protect seniors!! They have tarnished their reputation as far as I’m concerned. Need to SHOW people that ALEC doesn’t control them and that they are truly working FOR the benefits of our senior citizens.

Still, that is real people power at work!

I read your links df and wasn’t at all impressed with their reasons. Seems many members felt the same. Not a group one would use for any valid reason unless you are full of GOP hate.

      From the link

The letter also revealed that AARP said its “interest in supporting ALEC was to gain better access to legislators.”

“We reject this explanation. AARP is one of the largest non-profit, social welfare membership organizations in the country, and your brand and reputation give you tremendous access to and credibility with lawmakers on all levels in every state,” the letter reads.

Possibly one of PBO’s greatest gifts to the people of this country…if it holds:)

    http://www.politicususa.com/2016/08/05/republicans-terrified-white-working-class-voters-abandoning-donald-trump.html

If any significant number of white working class voters abandon the Republican Party for Clinton, the result will trigger an earthquake down the ballot that will wreck the Republican Party.
