That photo just stuck me, a black male and a white female (child) in the oval office. It’s a powerful symbol of what can happen when this country moves forward. A black female as President and a white male as Vice President will one day occupy the oval office. One day all of the color combinations will be realized. Just like in these Olympics, things that have never happened before are happening.

I agree Don, and I would like to take it one step further, if I may And please forgive me if I am talking out of my a$$, but being white I many times do not recognize all that POC have endured. But I am trying. My hope would be that one day we never even write, mention, or, more importantly, notice what color anyone is, much like I can hope some day we don’t mention a woman’s age, figure, or what she is wearing. Or if someone is LGBT or anything. I hope some day we can simply say this is the most qualified person to be in this office and aren’t we blessed at that.

          August 13, 2016 at 3:25 pm

Ok so now I am questioning myself. Did I just discount all POC, etc.? Is what I said like All Lives Matter? If so, I am so sorry. That is not what I meant to infer. I am just tired of the constant categorizing of people and things with hidden meanings attached of which category is better than the other. I can’t wait for the day when we all just think of ourselves as humans first. And I’m sorry, Don, if I discounted your wonderful observation about this photo.
Best stop before I dig myself a deeper hole.

cd4biden, its not that serious, all of us have opinions on things and they are just opinions. Here at TOD, I think we are free to express ourselves, and the moment we can’t express ourselves then we have a problem. I disagree with some things people say here, and I’m sure they disagree with me, its all good though. Take amk for instance, now that guy is a loon, but hey, he’s good for laughs so we keep him around. What I’m saying is just relax, you aren’t being graded.

          • August 13, 2016 at 5:09 pm

I think I understand your longing expressed here, cd4biden; and I too want us to be free from the negativity, cruelty, and wrongs which are present in our world around color/race/ethnicity/categorizing. But to me it’s not the seeing and noticing each other’s color or ethnicity or clothing or symbols showing religious affiliation — it’s what we (and by that I mean white people) have attached to these things. That being This means you are Like That. It’s not noticing that someone one is possibly Japanese American — it’s making that a sign of being a traitor and a danger. It’s not noticing that I am female and my husband is male — it’s assigning who and what we can be and do based on those observable factors. It’s not noticing — it’s what we allow that to mean. I don’t want to get away from that, and I don’t think we every could. But the negativity and using visual cues to define and oppress — that’s the wrong that we have to see, claim, and stop. I think it’s why white supremacy and misogyny have triumphed and maintained power for centuries and milennia — they are visible across the room and across the street. So if you can recruit people to believe the lie about People Who Look LIke That, by bullying, lying, phony flattery, greed, then the lies can be enforced system-wide. People of Irish and Polish and Swedish origin could disappear into whiteness in a generation or two, if not faster depending on resources and ability to present themselves in the culturally-approved way. Look at German POW’s — let out to work on farms DURING WWII!!! Eating in the mess halls on military bases in the USA during the war, while black soldiers were denied thanks to Jim Crow and racism. I always think of Flip Wilson’s joke, What You See Is What You Get — it’s not true, because what we can be taught and encouraged to see can be completely wrong and evil — but if people believe it and act on it, you get……A Trump Rally. We are getting such an illustration of this process every day now, and we need to see it and encourage other people to see it too.

GA DF, this is beyond sad.

Thirteen/fourteen is just about the worse age there is — everything seems like the end of the world to people that age, wish someone could have helped him. Just too, too tragic. (BTW — isn’t this the age of your students? Am impressed with your determination and fortitude.

But on the bright side, look what this young man has accomplished between the time he was that age and now (via Meta’s twitter timeline):

Am so looking forward to Sep 26:

Can’t even read that. Poor little boy. My 13-year-old granddaughter, along with her best friend, used to seek out other kids who were being bullied in her previous school – the last couple of years – and would ask them to sit with them at lunch. Then they’d tell the bullies to get lost. So proud of her when she told me that, I could have burst. So sad that children can’t go to school just to learn. Many schools have anti-bullying campaigns, now, but – of course – some of the episodes are kept quiet and the kids are afraid to report the bullies. God bless the little children.

President Obama’s international coalition has taken the city of Manbij from ISIS in Syria, pummeling the terrorist group and taking away yet another one of its bases and forcibly freeing more than two thousands hostages in the process. This comes just days after the Obama coalition killed the leader of ISIS in Afghanistan, knocking the group further back on its heels. This must all come as a surprise to Donald Trump, who spent the week claiming that Obama was the “Founder of ISIS.” It may explain why Trump has now gone completely silent.

I’m just shocked. Yes…this is sarcasm. For real.

Who is the real leader of ISIS? It sure as hell isn’t President Obama or Hillary Clinton, as the delusional Donald Trump has spent the past few days falsely claiming. The name Trump might have been looking for is Hafiz Saeed, the leader of ISIS terrorist efforts across Afghanistan and Pakistan. But as of today “Hafiz Saeed” is no longer the correct answer to the question either, because he’s dead. Obama just had him taken out with a drone strike.

    Donnie haz a sad.

“Women Burn Niqabs, Men Cut Off Beards After Syrian Town is Liberated From ISIS”

      http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2016/08/13/women_burn_niqabs_after_syrian_town_of_manbij_is_liberated_from_isis.html

      ——–

Residents from the northern Syrian city of Manbij are celebrating their freshly restored freedoms after U.S.-backed forces seized full control of the town from ISIS, which had been using civilians as human shields. Photographs show people pouring into the streets to celebrate after a battle that lasted 73 days. Wrestling control of Mabij from ISIS marks the biggest defeat for the group in Syria since July 2015, notes the Associated Press, and comes amid a string of territorial losses for the extremist group. “The city is now fully under our control but we are undertaking sweeping operations,” a member of the Syria Democratic Forces, the alliance of Kurdish and Arab forces who receive air support from the U.S., said.

What I don’t know is why do these terrorist organization leaders continue to make known the fact that they are leaders of terrorist organizations? I mean bragging about being accepted to the college of your choice is one thing, but to brag about being a terrorist organization leader in the age of Obama is quite another thing. I mean I could brag about certain things but I don’t, because I’m humble. But these guys, oh no, they just got to let somebody know that they’re the big cheese. Then next thing you know they’re breaking news on CNN.

This hits me hard, because it was just over a year ago, that my husband was in that situation. We were concerned that he knew we loved him, which we assured him repeatedly. He was so tired, and so ready to leave, but at peace. The one thing he expressed concern about, was that I would be okay after he left, that I would be financially secure. He asked me how much I would have a month, I told him, and he relaxed and said, “You’ll be okay.” That was what was on his mind, up until the end: his family and our well being. Our sweet son assured him that whatever happened I would be taken care of. He charged several people in the last few days: “Take care of Carolyn.” Always thinking of his family, to the end.

Doing the same here pf58. I’ll be tabling tomorrow, and am looking forward to it. Hoping to sign up lots of volunteers to help bring on the Tsunami.

People, even if you can only fit in one hour of phone banking, or an afternoon of canvassing, or a morning working at an event helping register people between now and November 8th, please do it. Every little bit helps. And then on November 9th you can sit back with a very well earned smile and sense of deep contentment at having helped to elect the first woman president in our history.

Go to this website https://www.hillaryclinton.com/ and about half way down the page is a box for your zip code. Enter it and hit the search button and it will tell you the events coming up in the next few weeks for your area. They include phone banks, trainings, and other events, starting with those closest to you. Or go to the bottom of the page and click on Volunteer and fill out the form. Someone will contact you to find a place for you and your talents.

I’ve said it, and stand by it:

The GOP is faced with the first NOMINEE that looks AT THE ACTUAL CAMPAIGN AS GRIFT.

They’re used to elected officials using the OFFICE – once you get in – as a grifting starting point.

    But, the ACTUAL CAMPAIGN?

    That’s new for them.

From BJ- agree with every point made:

    philadelphialawyer says:
    August 13, 2016 at 5:17 pm
More on Trump and the missing money…his campaign had 20 million on hand at the end of June. He says his campaign raised 80 million in July. And now has 37 million on hand. So, where did the rest go? He should have 100 million, if there were no July expenditures. And we know he spent nothing on TV ads, and very little on GOTV, State offices and so on. Where did the other 63 million go? Is he just crazy overcharging the campaign for every Trump Inc expense he can dream up? Is he paying his wife and kids big money out of campaign funds? Is the reality merely that, yeah, the campaign technically “raised” 80 million, but that was gross and not net, and the professional fund raisers got the bulk of it? Did he actually repay himself the money he lent the campaign and claimed that he had “forgiven?”

A ‘Sex and the City’ for African Viewers
    By JADA F. SMITH
    AUG. 13, 2016

Let’s get this out of the way up front: “An African City,” the steamy Ghanaian web series about five young women looking for love in Accra, is an unabashed rip-off of “Sex and the City.” There are the ubiquitous five-inch strappy sandals, the scene-stealing dresses made of Fanti fabric and the bevy of men who hop in and out of the beds of Nana Yaa, Makena, Zainab and Sade. The women are as free and liberal about sex as their American HBO foremothers, with the exception of the fifth character, Ngozi, who is such a Charlotte.

The women fit perfectly into Carrie- or Miranda-type boxes. Nana Yaa, the main character, is a radio journalist who ponders existential dating questions in voice-overs throughout the show. Zainab and Makena both function as a Miranda — fiercely independent and all about their business. Ngozi is the church girl who works for a nongovernmental organization and purses her lips at too much talk about the male anatomy. And Sade is Samantha, with condoms spilling from the designer handbags that her rich, married boyfriend buys for her. The women spend an enormous amount of time sipping cocktails in dimly lit restaurants as they chat about rolling power outages, good condom etiquette and men who expect them to leave their jobs and make fufu all day.

But the show’s creator, Nicole Amarteifio, who moved from Ghana to New York and then back again, is also presenting an unseen side of culture on a continent that is usually depicted with footage of war, famine and poverty. There is none of that here. Instead, “An African City” struts into the lives of well-off African women. Makena is an Oxford-trained lawyer, and Sade graduated from Harvard Business School. Zainab sits atop a growing shea butter empire, and Nana Yaa’s father is the country’s minister of energy. Through the five women, “An African City” explores what it means to be a westernized young woman readjusting to the culture and surroundings of her home continent.

The five women are all “returnees,” the children of families who left Ghana for the West and then came home with so-called “returnee savior syndrome.” The phrase “to whom much is given, much is required” could be their unofficial motto, as it frames their interactions and challenges their way of thinking. They are constantly fretting about whether they would tip so little if back in Manhattan, or why the “white wedding” is considered better than a traditional one.

New documentary on black swimmers is right on time
A dive into the exclusion of blacks in American pools and the culture of blacks and water in the Caribbean
    BY MARTENZIE JOHNSON
    @MARTENZIE

On Thursday night at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Stanford University swimmer Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an individual swimming medal at any Olympic Games. Manuel tied with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak in the 100-meter freestyle, breaking an Olympic and American record with a time of 52.70 seconds on the way. She was joined in triumph by Stanford teammate and good friend Lia Neal, who earlier in the week captured a silver medal as a part of the 4×100 freestyle relay. Together, along with Maritza McClendon, who in 2004 became the first black female U.S. Olympic swimming team member, these women are also breaking down the barriers of entry for African-Americans into pools.

The Black Line, a new documentary from Emmy-nominated producer Stan Jakubowicz, takes a deep dive into the historical exclusion of blacks in American swimming pools while also examining the rich culture of blacks and water in the Caribbean. Featuring a star-studded cast including three-time Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines, U.S. women’s swimming coach Dave Marsh and 16-year-old black swimming sensation Reece Whitley, The Black Line is poised to eliminate the stereotype that black people don’t swim. “The fastest woman in the United States is African-American,” a contributor stated. “She’s black.”

“Nothing about the top layer of your skin has to do with swimming,” another said.

Gotta Fox News and Limbaugh fan I know that has gotten taken by the cell phone con of supposedly winning a million dollars for some contest they did not enter, but needing to send $10,000 for taxes and delivery first. The couple said they only had $500 and their offer was accepted. They were excited. Makes me think the same logic goes into supporting Trump.

Thank you so much, Bobfr, for your spot-on tweet response to the BS being peddled by the New Yorker.

I saw this term the other day…”Stochastic terrorism is the use of mass communications to incite random actors to carry out violent or terrorist acts that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable. In short, remote-control murder by lone wolf.”

Yes, I saw that, too. It’s really getting scarier, day by day.

but this is not new…RW racist radio has put hatred in the minds and hearts of white Americans for a very long time…there can be no Truth and Reconciliation until we get a handle on this…i know folks always defend Hate Speech in the name of Free Speech…but then they are not the target of the hate…

Yes, you’re right, it’s back to being one level up now and out loud, but it’s never-ending. It may cycle in and out, but …

As you said, those who defend hate speech are not the targets. If they were, there would be RW-inspired laws against it.

So sad that our children and our children’s children are still putting up with the underlying racism and hate. I’ve got great grandchildren who don’t know anything about bigotry at this point, and I so wish we could keep them in that world.

No Jackie…we no not need them to be ignorant of the hate…we need them to fight against the hate….

The great grand boys are only 2 and 5, but they’ll catch up! My two younger grandchildren have three bi-racial little sisters whom we all love, so that generation’s “in the fight” already. That doesn’t mean I don’t wish that weren’t necessary.

And goodnight to you, my dear. Can barely keep my eyes open!
