Good morning, DF and happy school year. Teaching is the most exhausting, emotionally draining, and most rewarding profession there is, I think. I did it for over 40 years, and will miss it this year, I know, but it is time too leave it to the young ones. Glad people like you are still in there.

In response to Did we already know this…..I think PBO knew/knows this. He has just been so calm about this election. I have a feeling he knows the roof is about to come crashing down on DT. I am loving the Olympics and watching PBO have a good vacation. Such a relief from the frenzy of this past year. PBO reminds me of the slogan “Keep calm and carry on.”

Morning, carolyn! Thank you so much for the kind and encouraging words…means a lot to me. I do agree about PBO and DT mess…I’m not afraid that he will win anymore, like I once was…but now I just hope that with each passing day, another Republican looses their seat and the rest of America begins to face reality and get a clue….going back 50 years until now….hope reality sets in and Hillary cleans house, literally. He is a mess and a menace and I hope that his brand ends up in the toilet and he gets lots of eyeballs on his business practices.

I am calm. I love the Olympics and enjoying them every night…hard to turn off the tv and get to sleep:) Summer Olympics are my favorite..Enjoy the day and thanks again!

More from Washington Monthly….this is serious.

        http://washingtonmonthly.com/2016/08/15/just-how-deep-do-trumps-and-manaforts-putin-underworld-ties-go/

How much does Trump and his team need to do before we start asking serious questions about whether they’re a Manchurian Candidate campaign actively working on behalf of a foreign nation? Trump’s campaign manager is deep in with Putin cronies, the Putin regime is very likely behind the hacking on Democratic organizations to benefit Trump, his campaign worked to soften anti-Putin and anti-Russia language in the GOP platform, and his finances and investments are enmeshed with Russian cronies–which may be a key reason why he refuses to release his tax returns.

Can you imagine what Fox News and Rush Limbaugh would be saying if these things were true of a Democratic candidate for president? They would be openly demanding a trial for treason and using “Rosenberg” as a nickname.

As Trump’s Chances Dwindle, In Come the Conservative Fantasy Peddlers
    by David Atkins
    August 14, 2016 6:33 AM

One of the curious hallmarks of modern conservative culture is the stubborn adherence to ideology and “known truths” even in the face of obvious evidence to the contrary. A half century ago the stereotype was that liberals were the starry-eyed purveyors of untested ideologies and assertions about the essential goodness of human nature, even as conservatives played the role of sober grandfathers who tempered liberal passions with doses of reality. This was never really the case even back then, but it was much closer to the truth than it is now.

Today, it is Republicans whose assertions about the nature of world consistently meet with rejection by reality. Supply-side economics is a proven failure. Climate change is real. Abstinence education doesn’t work. Giving money to the underprivileged doesn’t make them lazy, but rather strengthens the entire community. Tax cuts don’t spur growth, especially when given to the wealthy. Letting gay people get married doesn’t bring down God’s wrath on the nation. Wall Street doesn’t function well when it’s allowed to regulate itself. Letting the private insurance market dictate healthcare costs leads to worse outcomes. And so on.

The Garland Pre-Compromise Is Already Sabotaging Clinton’s First 100 Days
    by David Atkins
    August 13, 2016 3:12 PM

As confidence grows that Trump will lose in November, speculation is already beginning about the first 100 days of a new hypothetical Clinton administration. Top of the list is filling the Supreme Court vacancy left by the passing of justice Antonin Scalia.

In theory, a Clinton Administration supported by a Democratic Senate majority should be able to reshape the court in a significantly more liberal direction. But it seems increasingly likely that Clinton’s hands will be tied by the Obama Administration’s decision to nominate a centrist in Merrick Garland in the hopes of compromise with the current GOP. Democratic Senators are already pushing for Clinton not to displace Garland with a more liberal choice in the interest of “preserving political capital.”

PBO stopped trying to work with the GOP in 2011 when he realised they didn’t want to work with his administration. He nominated Garland because he sees Garland as the best person for the job – not because of anything the GOP might want.

Perhaps in October but definitely in November the Senate will suddenly decide to give Garland a vote.

      • 42 Wilson Michael

I saw the mother of Gabby Douglas talking on CNN News Day about how heart broken Gabby is over the bullying she has been getting. From her hair, to her not putting her hand over her heart when the National Anthem were being play, from her not smiling enough. People show can be hateful, specially now that they can hide behind the computer.

    • 45 carolyn
      August 15, 2016 at 9:33 am

Actually, Gabby was being correct. We were taught in school that we were to put our hand over our heart during the Pledge. Then to stand at attention with our arms at our sides during the National anthem. This hand over the heart during the anthem is one more thing the right wing has added to test “patriotism.” It was not the protocol originally. Check out pictures from 50s and 60s….I think you’ll see this.

I don’t put my hand over my heart when I sing the National anthem. I stand at attention with my arms at my side. There is a difference between the pledge and the anthem. I’m so tired of this phony “patriotism” stuff, like flag pins.

        August 15, 2016 at 12:33 pm

The hand over heart controversy was a big push against Obama during the 2008 campaign. That was the first time I got a forwarded email from someone I thought was a friend of a picture of Obama standing in a slight diagonal line (he was in front) with him having his hand by his sides and the other few politicians having their hands over their hearts. The heading on the photo was something like Obama will not even pledge his allegiance to our country. He was asked in one of the debates about the photo. He said this was not the pledge of allegiance, but the National Anthem and that his grandfather who had served in the military taught him to remove his hat and stand at attention to show respect when the National Anthem was played. At the time I thought about I had never seen people put their hands over their heart or did myself other than the pledge of allegiance. I started looking at TV games where the anthem was played and did not see this either. Manufactured reasons to hate someone which is the definition of prejudice.

Just the visual of a black President in the oval office talking to other black men or black women or white women will go a long way in establishing a mindset in children that anything is possible. The GOP establishment strikes back

Late in the 2016 primary season, GOP donors and groups look to send a message by declaring open war on several House Freedom Caucus-endorsed candidates.

The tea party has spent six years causing trouble for establishment Republicans in primaries, and Donald Trump mopped the floor with them on his way to the party’s presidential nomination. But suddenly, with the 2016 primary season winding down, the establishment is going on offense, pushing back hard against candidates backed by the hardline conservative House Freedom Caucus, including defeated GOP Rep. Tim Huelskamp — setting the stage for a titanic intra-Republican fight during the next Congress.

A collection of Republican donors and operatives loosely organized around several super PACs decided this summer to adopt newly aggressive tactics against GOP “obstructionists” — or as John Hart, a former aide to ex-Sen. Tom Coburn, calls them: “Rebels In Name Only” — after years of growing tea-party influence in Republican primaries and the halls of Congress.

Low-profile House candidates from Kansas to Georgia watched in astonishment this summer as hundreds of thousands of super PAC dollars poured into their primaries. The top aide for Roger Marshall, the Republican who beat Huelskamp in his Kansas primary, remembers sitting in his car when his phone pinged with news that donors unknown were about to inject a half-million dollars into rural Western Kansas.

    How wonderful…
For years, parishioners at the Calvary Hill Community
Church have learned to live by the code.
Now their children are learning a different kind:
    computer code.
The San Francisco church is one of the first to
take part in an initiative from Rev. Jesse Jackson’s
Rainbow PUSH Coalition to forge a new generation
of computer programmers. Jackson is reaching
out to African Americans in their spiritual
homes with FAITHTECH Labs, an initiative that
provides access to computers for all ages and coding
    classes for young people.
So far, Rainbow PUSH has opened tech labs
at Calvary Hill in San Francisco, in its Chicago
headquarters and in a church in Greenville, S.C.,
Jackson’s hometown. Two more are slated to open
soon — inside Greater St. Paul Church in Oakland
and Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in
Richmond, Calif. — with a third planned for a
    Chicago church.
Each tech lab is equipped with laptop and desktop
    computers, printers, servers and networking
technology donated by HP. In many cases the new
equipment is replacing slow, broken-down computers
that frequently crash, frustrating church users,
    young and old.
“We have to get a whole new generation ‘code
ready,’ to produce thousands of young people who
can fill the pipeline to the technology industry,”
Jackson told USA TODAY. “If not us, who will?”
FAITHTECH Labs is part of Rainbow PUSH’s
1,000 Churches Connected Program, which supplies
technology to boost financial literacy and
    now technological proficiency.
Valerie Cooper, associate professor of black
church studies at the Duke Divinity School, says
Jackson recognizes “the power of black churches in
    black communities.”
For decades, churches have served as a cornerstone
    of the African-American community and
an organizing base for the civil rights and social
justice movements. Nearly eight in 10 African
Americans say religion is very important in their
lives, significantly more than the 59% of the U.S.
adult population overall who agree, according to
research conducted by the Pew Research Center
in 2009. Churches not only play a central role in
African-American life, they offer far more than
    Sunday services, cont

Yes, and yes, CD! 🙂 We did both last week; however, offspring cancelled his return flight this past Saturday so we’ve both been bemoaning the fact that we have no more WW to watch this week. Yesterday we tried Episode1, Season 1 of Downtown Abbey but it just didn’t *grab* either of us.

If you have time watch “The Newsroom”. Such a great series, and also by Aaron Sorkin. It uses actual new events for its stories, and we watch how the newsroom reacts to these stories, and how they put together that evening’s new. Here is a link to the first 8 minutes of the first episode. You don’t see the newsroom stuff, but you do see how well written the show is and the slant it takes. It is brilliant!!

Thanks for the thought, CD. I actually saw a few trailers (?) before the show started and was very intrigued but couldn’t see it from here at the time. I recently watched Episode 1 of Newsroom on line while I was awaiting the delivery of our WW order and didn’t want to cheat (offspring) by peeking. I truly liked the story line and several of the personalities I ‘met’. However, I am squeamish about swearing (particularly the gratuitous kind) and thought there was too much there to make me continue watching. Offspring is the same – swearing tends to jar us, thus detracting from the whole. A pity, really.

The first comes from a blogger at Daily Kos with the screen name mt41w. He attended the opening of a field office in “deeply red” Mason.
The fact that Hillary’s ground game is focused, extremely competent, hard-working and ready to GOTV was plain with the opening of the Mason, Ohio office on Wednesday evening August 10th. This was one of seven offices “opening for business” Wednesday in Ohio…

Since this is the middle of August I’m going for the bottom half of this pic and ignoring the top portion. 😉

Tax returns take on new importance as a 2016 campaign issue
    08/15/16 08:47 AM—UPDATED 08/15/16 08:59 AM
    By Steve Benen
Donald Trump has been quite clear that he has no intention of releasing his tax returns, despite the norms established by presidential nominees in both parties over the last several decades. That does not, however, mean that the Republican candidate can make the issue go away through his obstinacy.

VP Joe is giving the best take-down of Trump imaginable right now. Making the case of why Trump is not only a nut job, but he’s un-American.

That was a thing of beauty Bill R. He is the best person to take down Trump on foreign policy; he makes it plain and simple to understand.
