Good morning, TOD. (((((HUGS))))) to Chips. Miss you SO much. Thanks, NW, for keeping us together. Blessed day to all. 🙂

  2. August 18, 2016 at 8:40 am

    Good Thursday, Nerdy… TOD Family!!!

  3. August 18, 2016 at 8:42 am

Good morning TOD folks! Wishing everyone a good day. Also wish it could be ‘trumpless’.

      mispronunciation ? that’s a new one.

everything the rethugs say or do is given a pass by msm.

remember all the hullabaloo over hillary’s I short circuited comment?

Yeah, “mispronunciation” definitely doesn’t apply here.

    ut

Of late, the site takes too long to load. Even this page with just one post took nearly a minute to load. It gets worse as more posts are added and other tabs for other sites are also affected by tod.

I think the there is some script running the sidebar thingy (where all the bt tweet decks happen). Can you disable them for a day or two if the problem is originating from there?

And how many really now use the sidebar? Time to boot it off?

      It’s not slow for me.

Hey TODers is it happening to you?

Are you sure it’s not your internet connection, Amk?

I have a 100Mbps high speed connection. All other sites, when tod is not loading, load in a jiffy. When tod is loading, the ff browser kinda freezes for a few minutes and I can’t even access other tabs easily.

NW, mine is loading just fine for TOD. Fast.

Don’t have a problem with TOD loading speed, though sometimes I get a message that “this site is unavailable.” 😦

Windows 10 on 2-year old Toshiba laptop, cheapest TimeWarnerCable package (thanks GGail!) available (think it’s 15bps compared to your 100, but could be wrong).

          Thanks Amk.

It could be the Firefox browser.

I use Safari or Chrome and TOD works just fine with them.

I’m hesitant to delete the side bar, because according to the internal stats of the blog, a variety of TODers use them several times everyday. TOD is a very high traffic website.

          Thanks 99ts.

I’m using Safari and Chrome and it works just fine. If you have Chrome, can you try it and tell us if there’s any difference? Also, how fast is your internet connection and the storage space on the device you’re using?

          • 24 99ts
            August 18, 2016 at 10:19 am

I’m not so good on the tech side of things – we use a 4G wireless network which to me is very fast – Mr 99 tells me it is super fast (although it does have its moments). I don’t have Chrome but am thinking of trying it due to a couple of issues – will let you know. I use W7 on a desk top – have masses of storage space available – other than grandbabe pictures and family history “stuff” I don’t store much.

The slow is much worse with more pictures/tweets but I think that’s to be expected

I’m not bothered by it, just thought I’d mention the firefox angle. Thank you Nerdy for keeping TOD going – we all miss Chips but so appreciate all that you do.

As a foodie, I have not been impressed with the Obamas’ dinning choices. I don’t fancy myself a food critic but I have dinned in many great restaurants. Chili’s, Cheesecake Factory and Red Lobster just to name a few. Apparently yesterday the Obama group went to Jimmy Seas Pan Pasta; a quick perusal of the menu didn’t show any lamb or meat dishes. Far be it from me to question someone’s dinner choice, but I’m a little dismayed by the choices of the first family.

  8. August 18, 2016 at 8:47 am

    Lol

  9. August 18, 2016 at 8:52 am

Donald Trump received his first briefing yesterday from U.S. intelligence officials, though there’s a limit as to how much information he received…the briefing, which lasted about two hours, described “how U.S. intelligence agencies see a variety of global issues,” but did not describe “espionage methods, covert operations or nuclear secrets.”

Trump said ahead of the briefing that he’s wary of the U.S. intelligence community and doesn’t necessarily consider the agencies reliable.

“Not so much from the people that have been doing it for our country. Look what’s happened over the last ten years. Look what’s happened over the years. It’s been catastrophic,” he said in response. “And in fact, I won’t use some of the people that are sort of your standards, you know, just use them, use them, use them. Very easy to use them, but I won’t use them because they’ve made such bad decisions.”

The next question is obvious: if the GOP candidate doesn’t want to rely on U.S. intelligence agencies, who exactly would Trump listen to when making critical security decisions?

Indeed, it shouldn’t be lost on anyone that Trump considers Alex Jones, the National Enquirer, and Breitbart News to be credible outlets, but the Republican nominee adopts a far more skeptical posture when it comes to the Central Intelligence Agency.

            Morning Carolyn {{{hugs}}}

I think arapaho is doing a better job at keeping you guys informed than I could. She has been posting information. It is so overwhelming how one small fire (est. 5 acres) has grown to over 31,600 acres since Tuesday.

Shows you how dry our land is here in California. Then on top of that, I am concerned about our water table. They are not just taking water from the Pacific Ocean, but, also from the nearest lakes to combat the fire.

I have to stop talking about it before I work myself into a panic and go searching for Chocolate!

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, reinforcing views of labor market strength that could encourage the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates soon.

nitial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 262,000 for the week ended Aug. 13, the Labor Department said. Claims for the prior week were unrevised.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast initial claims slipping to 265,000 in the latest week.

Claims have now been below 300,000, a threshold associated with a strong labor market, for 76 straight weeks. That is the longest such stretch since 1973, when the labor market was much smaller.

Is Putin playing Trump like he did Berlusconi?

U.S. officials see parallels between Putin’s courtships of Trump and the former Italian leader.

In January 2009, the U.S. ambassador in Rome cabled Washington to raise an alarm. Russian President Vladimir Putin, the diplomat wrote, had cultivated a troubling relationship with the country’s prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

“Berlusconi admires Putin’s macho, decisive, and authoritarian governing style, which the Italian PM believes matches his own,” wrote the ambassador, Ronald P. Spogli. “From the Russian side, it appears that Putin has devoted much energy to developing Berlusconi’s trust.“

The ambassador noted with concern that the brash Italian billionaire, who was driven from office by scandal in 2011, was openly challenging U.S. policy toward Russia and echoing Putin’s views on issues from NATO expansion to Kosovo to missile defense.

And he shared reports from opposition party contacts of a more “nefarious” factor: talk that “Berlusconi and his cronies are profiting personally and handsomely” from business ties to Russia.

    /

“The parallels with Trump are a little too disturbing,” says a U.S. government analyst who closely tracked Russia’s relationship with Europe when Berlusconi was in office. “Putin is very strategic. He would focus on people’s vulnerabilities — whether their vanity or greed or financial needs.”

That view echoes the analysis of former deputy CIA director Michael Morell, who recently wrote in The New York Times that Putin, drawing from his background as an intelligence officer, had made a “calculated” overture to Trump early in the presidential campaign, “playing upon Mr. Trump’s vulnerabilities by complimenting him,” and turning Trump into an “unwitting agent” of Russia.

Asked about Trump in December, Putin described the New Yorker as “bright and talented,” words that clearly pleased Trump: “It is always a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond,” the mogul told reporters soon after. Since then, Trump has praised and defended Putin — including against the charge of having Russian journalists killed — and has pledged to establish better relations with Moscow.

He courted Dubya as well, all the while planning to invade Georgia (the part that used to be in the old USSR, not the USA state; I know TODers know the difference, but we have readers from everywhere). I still remember the dumb surprised look on Dubya’s face when he and Putin were at the Olympics and the latter leaned over and told Shrub what he had done. I still shudder with distaste and anger when I remember, Dubya saying that he looked into Putin’s eyes and saw the measure of the man. Well, he got the measuring wrong; he was played by a master KGB operative and made himself and us look like a fool. Thank God PBO is sure in his manhood and does not need someone else to affirm it. He does not play with Putin; all you have to do is go back and look at the body language whenever the two are together. Additionally, it is always Putin who seeks sideline meetings with PBO at the various summits that they attend. Sure we go in together, like for instance in Syria, when we have similar goals, but they are not buddies or friends or even trying to be. Putin learned early that PBO had his true measure and would not be moved. So tired of little, weak men using public office to try to define a manhood that they so clearly do not have. PBO is the true measure of what a mature, responsible adult male is. All others are little boys who should not be trusted with anything that affects the lives of others.

Haven’t talked about it much, but my beloved yorkie, Pearl, is not doing well. It might be intestinal lymphoma, or protein enteropathy (which is more likely). There have been days when I feel she’s failing but then there’s hope. Poor baby looks like a skeleton at half her weight. But the holistic vet thinks we have avenues to explore. To determine definitively if it’s intestinal lymphoma is a $2,400 test, and 98% of the time that is not it.

She’s the sweetest, dearest little dog. We adopted her at the age of 7 – she had been a puppy mill breeder. She’s about 12, 13 now. She could use a dose of good ol’ TOD energy!. So could her Mom……..

Whether it be people or animals I hate those expensive tests. 95% of the time they come back negative but for the 5% we seem to feel obligated to try it. Last year I told my doc no more – & just assume that isn’t the problem. I used to get more stressed about the tests than the disease!

The shelter had named her “Jewels”. I went to see her, held her on my lap for about an hour. She had been fostered, and then taken to the shelter for adoption, so she’d been there awhile. I held her on my lap and she didn’t make much contact with me. She had been treated nice by a lot of nice ladies in her shelter experience (certainly not her puppy mill breeder experience). She was observing all the other dogs who were meeting families, getting adopted. It was weird, because the dogs we’ve adopted in the past always connected with me. So after about an hour of calling her Jewels, I called her Pearl. She turned around 270 degrees and locked into my eyes. That was it. She was mine. I called Mr. 57 to pick up cash, and of course if he didn’t feel what I felt, well she’d find the right home. She never left my arms. She is so deal, yet a little lioness when she needs to be (or was before she got sick). I love yorkies – they look like stuffed toys, but they are blue collar working dogs. Love ’em. Love her. Imagine what the word Pearl invokes – that’s her. Thanks for your kind words and insights. This particular cancer would be really rare, but yes, it’s possible. The vet suggested that we do another ultrasound and see if anything shows up. Meanwhile, she’s hanging in there but it’s a struggle.

Technically, these are still violations of the VRA. The difference is there is no pre-screening, stopping these God awful laws before they do damage. And they have to work their way through our politically-charged courts instead of being dispatched by DOJ. Lawsuits are expensive; and the whole point is, those who are impacted couldn’t get the documentation, or get to the polls because they are poor, infirmed, elderly. Not exactly in a position to bring a lawsuit. And that of course is the point.

It’s a disgrace. Particularly since Roberts saying “racism is over” is obviously not true. The vast majority of the states that have enacted draconian laws since VRA was gutted, are the same states that had been subject to pre-screening.
