Just read the Ta-Nehesi Coates piece and it was excellent. I highly recommend taking a moment to read and pass it on.

Real Journalism: 10 Questions Our Media Refuses to Ask Donald Trump

    Trevor LaFauci September 12, 2016

    It doesn’t get better.

With the latest episode of #LaueringTheBar in which our media has once again failed to do its most basic job, it is now officially time to put the myth of the liberal media to bed once and for all. Matt Lauer’s gutless performance this past Wednesday at the Commander-in-Chief forum was only the latest in a string of episodes where our media has failed to challenge Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump for fear of hurting his wittle feelings. While the major networks have consistently given Trump $2 billion of free airtime, even alleged “liberal” networks like MSNBC have shred any kind of perceived bias by not only giving Trump his own personal Town Hall but also by having Trump cheerleader Joe Scarborough and co-host Mika Brzezinski offer Trump softball questions on live TV. Combine all this with the fact that the Trump campaign refuses to participate in interviews with Rachel Maddow, who would be one of the few journalists with enough integrity to actually challenge Donald Trump, and what we have is a candidate who will seemingly go unchallenged all the way to Election Day.

    And that is a problem.

It is a problem because the role of media is to present the truth, even if the truth hurts a particular individual. When Donald Trump is allowed to lie about his support for the Iraq War for over a year and he still is allowed to continue this lie, that is a problem. That is a problem because people rely on our media to present factual information. If we are comparing two presidential candidates and determining which one is more qualified to be commander-in-chief, it is damn well important to ask one of them why he is insisting upon something that simply isn’t true. That speaks to the candidate’s character, his judgment, his ethics, and his morality. Do the American people want someone in the Oval Office who lies about his past? Someone who shifts his views only after popular opinion has changed? Someone who refuses to acknowledge his support for a war even though his support is clearly documented? These are all valid questions that the American people need answered.

But these answers won’t come. Not in the Age of Trump, where interviewers refuse to challenge a presidential candidate for fearing of losing him and the advertising dollars that come with him. Sure, the man lies 70% of the time, but people tune in to watch him which is the important part. As Chuck Todd famously said, it’s not the media’s job to fact-check certain claims being made by political candidates. Because when you fact-check candidates, they get upset. Rather than man up and admit their mistake, these candidates often double down on their assertions. If they still receive pushback then they can simply claim that their interviewer/interviewer’s network is clearly biased against them and refuse to do future interviews. When that happens, the interviewer gets an earful from his/her boss as to how terrible it now will be with that candidate no longer appearing on the network. Because no candidate wants to go on a show where they know they will be consistently challenged but to go on to a friendly network with softball questions, no pushback, and free airtime is a opportunity that simply cannot be passed up.

      Matthew Yglesias nails it here.
      From the article:

But the truly scary thing is that Trump is redefining the concept of a gaffe out of existence. It turns out that if you just boldly repeat something often enough, it goes away as a story. We’ve become numb, as a society, to what Trump is doing. In the process we’ve normalized casual racism, intense personal insults as an approach to politics, and completely decentered the idea that elected officials should grapple with difficult policy questions. Half the crazy things Trump says or does barely merit a mention on Twitter, much less the front-page coverage they would have merited in previous campaigns.

More than anything else, the numbness that Trump creates frightens me.

I’m glad they have Christie’s ugly mug in that picture– because he’s another despicable, deplorable character who got away with so much because we thought, oh well, that’s just his style, that’s just New Jersey, etc. But he did not ultimately get away with anything. He will never be president or any other elected official. The scrutiny brought on by his presidential aspirations may actually land him in jail. We can imagine the other despicable, deplorable character in this photo on the same path to ignominy and incarceration.

to be noted…this did not start with Trump….

Hi Nerdy! Thank you so much, as always, for keeping up TOD for all of us!

I’m so glad you posted this clip from Seth Meyers show with the First Lady because I watched my DVR of the episode this weekend. What you can’t see from the individual clips posted is how the audience reacted for the Q&A later, in the auditorium. When Seth came out the kids cheered. Then, when he introduced Nick Cannon they cheered a little louder. Finally, he introduced FLOTUS and the crowd went insane. Now, I realize this was Howard University, where there may be a few more Michelle Obama fans than at other institutions. But, seriously, when do any of you remember college-aged kids giving a First Lady a rock-star reception that drowned out two popular entertainers? I don’t.

I am so glad these young men stuck through and finished. It’s hard to finish college when you don’t have a lot of money because everything is on you to stick it through. I remember thinking several times to work a few years then go back and finish. So many older people told me it’s harder to go back once you decide to leave. I am so thankful I stuck it out, struggled with different jobs until I found the right fit for me. If I did not have a college degree I would not have gone as far as I have in life. It was rough with one just image not having a degree. One of my neighbors had the nerve to tell me he would advice someone not to go to college, I told him to keep that negativity to himself. This man was over 70 and was blaming his bad decisions on going to college. If he just stayed ignorant he would have done better in life……..people are just stupid.

Friday someone posted that Ex-Republican now EX-Liberal Ed Shultz was on Larry King singing the praises of DT. I just heard on Randi Rhodes the audio of Ed saying that DT is correct about the Generals being reduced to rubble, how PBO does not listen to the Generals, ignores their recommendations, blah, blah, blah. Ed never was a liberal or a Dem, doubt if he even changed his affiliation. He never liked PBO that’s why he told his listeners not to vote in 2010. Ed was a GOP plant.

Thom Hartmann is another scam/con. He was a ex-republican too he always talks about his dad being a republican but Thom never liked PBO either and wanted Bernie to challenge him in 2010 & 2012. Bernie is another scammer.

        • September 12, 2016 at 6:34 pm

Something’s going to have to happen because absolutely none of the media – TV, print, radio – are going to be watchable. It’s all GOP all the time and we cannot put up with it.

      He must be mistaken?????

They can pass out absentee ballot request forms but the volunteers shouldn’t have access to the actual absentee ballots!!!

      • September 12, 2016 at 6:57 pm

I’m totally scratching my head here…….Because 1) they are not authorized; 2) Simultaneous registration form and ballot? 3) And they claim voter fraud?

        • 64 jackiegrumbacher
          September 12, 2016 at 9:44 pm

Donna is right, meta. In most states you have to fill out an absentee ballot request form. Then, closer to the actual election, you are sent an absentee ballot, which must be sent back before a certain date. If you’re not registered to vote, you can’t be sent an absentee ballot, so while you may register and then request an absentee ballot, you’re wasting you time if you do this simultaneously. I wouldn’t expect Trump people to know the intricacy of how elections actually work.

It appears some Trump supporters are embracing the “deplorable” label. They recognize themselves for who they are. No need to apologize.

  36. 93 Ladyhawke
    September 12, 2016 at 7:23 pm

Pence seems more than anything just clumsy finding himself refusing call an avowed racist and former KKK leader “deplorable.” But it also shows the difficulty of the topic. The Trump campaign wants to keep the conversation to a broad mass of supporters. They don’t want to get into litigating who’s deplorable and who’s not. After all, even if they’re way fewer than half, Trump has a huge following of noxious “deplorable” followers. Is David Duke ‘deplorable’, how about alt-right golden boy Milo? Frankly, how about the publisher who’s pushed the ‘alt-right’ into the mainstream. Before Trump, that person was Breitbart publisher Steve Bannon, who is now of course Trump’s campaign manager.

I’m not sure it’s “more,” per se. The lowlife bigoted, racist, gun-toting part of the population has always been there, muffled for a while. Now, it’s parading down the street, carrying flags and Trump’s image on their sticks. When Trump goes down in defeat, we’ll have to see where it goes next. Without a continuing national conversation, probably just underground again – to rear its ugly head at some later time. It’s quite frightening.

Two of the most prominent human rights organisations in the United States are about to launch a campaign for the presidential pardon of Edward Snowden.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Amnesty International are ready to launch the “Pardon Snowden” campaign.

They are urging President Barack Obama to act before he leaves office in January 2017.

    /

But on Monday the White House reiterated President Obama’s position that Mr Snowden should face charges in the US because his leaks “damaged the United States”.

Mr Snowden would be “treated fairly and consistent with the law” if he returned to the US, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.
