Just watched that whole show. Usher, Stephen Curry and Bradley Cooper were also on it. You can see that Ellen really loves our First Lady and POTUS.

Another one for the basket of deplorables. I’m amazed not so much by the ignorance and bigotry publicly on display from this GOP spokeswoman but that she felt so empowered and emboldened to display it front and center with such self-righteousness. It’s another illustration of how ignorance/bigotry etc is being “re-normalized”. But on the other hand it helps identify those that need that heaping dose of sunlight

Unfortunately, there is a lot of hostility towards felons and a feeling that they should be “punished” harshly, including not being allowed to vote after they have served their time. This country should be focused on rehabilitating felons so that when they come out, they don’t go back in.

    The Youngstown, Ohio, Trump Republicans
    by Martin Longman
    September 13, 2016 1:57 PM

If you’re familiar with the lyrics from Bruce Springsteen’s song Youngstown, you might have had the same experience I had while reading Farai Chideya’s latest piece for FiveThirtyEight. The article looks at what’s happening along the eastern border of Ohio where support for Trump is strong. As a point of departure, it features Allan Banner, an Ohio construction worker who recently went back to work operating heavy machinery.

Banner, 66, grew up on a farm in Liberty Township, Ohio, between Youngstown and Warren, that his family has owned for nearly 200 years.

    Here’s how Springsteen’s song begins:

Here in northeast Ohio, back in eighteen-o-three
James and Danny Heaton found the ore that was linin’ Yellow Creek
They built a blast furnace here along the shore
And they made the cannon balls that helped the Union win the war

    Long roots in eastern Ohio.

A sense of rootedness in the Mahoning Valley community is connected to how Banner views work. He said his great-great-grandfather cut timbers to support the roofs of the coal mines; his father and grandfather worked in the steel industry. Banner and his brother worked union jobs in road construction and rebuilding or tearing down steel mills.

    ………………………….

This is the history of the region for people like Allan Banner, and both he and Mary Theis [an 81 year-old entrepreneur also featured in the article] describe well what’s happened to it.

Trumbull County is “a great area because the cost of living is very low,” [Banner] said, “but it’s very low because there’s not great jobs here.”

…“When [Trump] talks about negotiating, I know what he means because I’ve been able to negotiate so many deals for people,” [Theis] said. “I know it’s never going to be the same with General Motors or Packard, but with Donald Trump negotiating on trade, maybe we’ll get some of these jobs back.”

Her grandchildren went to college and are doing well. But she worries about other young people in the area, saying, “For some of those who didn’t go to college, who are in the trades, they need jobs, too.”

Nerdy, thank you for this wonderful roundup! So thrilled with these numbers. While I am happy for the families whose lives have improved immeasurably under POTUS, I primarily am happy that with the numbers he will get the credit he deserves. He has literally dragged this country forward–kicking and screaming the whole way–with his bare hands. Zero help from the despicable Rs, and often fighting the Dems as well. Yet he joyously is out there fighting for his successor. It was such a joy to watch him back on the campaign trail today, and I loved the way he kicked both Trump’s and the media’s asses. They deserved it. At the same time, it is so hard to watch him campaigning for the next president. There will be tears come January.

And waiting on more photos from those lucky enough to attend in person!!!!!!

Hey Donna, just peeked at the thread. Harwood was joking. It’s just the old Duke vs. UNC rivalry trash talk – nothing serious.

BTW, has Dudette been around lately? The Tarheel reference made me think of her.

JER, thank you for posting the Keith Olbermann 175 reasons not to vote for D.T. He reminded me of so much that people tend to forget, and I know I had. We have missed him for five years, and have needed him. MSNBC really missed the ball with that firing, along with Martin Bashir.
When I heard all the lists, I was overwhelmed, and I think that has happened. There has just been too much to keep track of. Everything bad blends with all the previous bad stuff, and doesn’t stick with us. So, I will replay this when I need reminding of specifics.

I have a question about charities and specifically them coming down on DT’s charity where he gets money from others and then turns around and gives it to those in need in HIS name. I am NO DT fan but isn’t this how charities work? I know several charities where they do get funds from corporations etc., then donate money to people in need. Doesn’t the Clinton Foundation get millions from people directly or holding events then find a good cause to give to those organizations in need? One thing DT does what I detest is when he holds events they are at his hotels and he takes millions of dollars from his “charity” which goes into his pocket instead of donating his hotel services or using a 3rd party hotel.

    • September 13, 2016 at 5:36 pm

The problem with DT is he hasn’t given to his own foundation since 2008 but yet struts around saying he’s given MILLIONS to charities. So it’s NOT HIS MONEY he’s giving away but taking credit for.

In contrast. the Clintons gave $23.2M to charity since 2001. About 25% of that went to the Clinton Foundation. See the difference?

    • 41 FoxfireTX
      September 13, 2016 at 5:39 pm

No, this is not what most “family” charities do in a couple of respects. While some often consist of pass through of funds, large chunks of those funds usually come from the family of the named charity. The Clintons have donated millions of dollars from their pockets to the Clinton Foundation while Trump has not donated to his named charity since 2008. So while he takes credit for “gifts” from his charity, in fact he has not made any contributions in years and all the funds come from others, and he gets the credit. Nice little gig there.

Second, many charities actually carry on the charitable work themselves. So while the Clinton Foundation does pass through a portion of their funds, they also actually fund and run the work in many instances. The Clinton Foundation currently has 2000 employees. Often they must set up another organization, for example in a foreign country, but it is part of the Clinton Foundation itself and carries on the charitable work.

      Hope this helps!

I’m soooo looking forward to watching PBO’s speech from Philly today. He always settles me, strengthens me and keeps me sane and fired up.

I REALLY needed this today as I was so disgusted with DT and the media’s collusion (whatever their motives) to promote him.

Thank you PBO! I know he will be active and so will our FLOTUS after they leave office and so I will look forward to his soothing and reassuring and inspiring voice for years to come. He will continue to be a rock for me.

Trump’s “6 weeks of paid maternity leave, if your employer doesn’t provide it” sure sounds impossible to me. Why would any employer provide it, at their expense, if the government will? Why in the world would RWNJs ever go for this, when they’re against all kinds of family-related benefits?

Sorry I heard him say it on Chris Hayes’ show, because now I want to throw a shoe at the teevee.

    • 107 jacquelineoboomer
      September 13, 2016 at 8:17 pm

One of the pundits said it’s family not maternity, which is even broader. No way the RWNJs won’t fight that. It’s too 21st century.

        September 13, 2016 at 9:02 pm

Family leave is Hillary’s plan. Maternity leave is Donald’s plan. She plans to pay with new taxes at the top earners whereas his would be from unemployment savings from fraud payments.

What is a 6 weeks leave? You bring the child home, put him/her in the crib and turn around, and the six weeks are over! I guess never having taken care of any of his children Donald wouldn’t have a clue. I cannot *wait* for this idiot to fade from the scene a-la Romneys!

earlier, I heard a BBC report about people in the fishing village of Wukan in China fighting the police because of widespread corrupt.

I see that ABC has a copy of that video.

I guess that people can only take so much before they take a stand.

of course arrests followed but sometimes change can only come when ordinary people fight back
