Asymmetry between the major parties fries the circuits of the mainstream press

      6. A candidate the likes of which we have not seen requires a type of coverage we have never seen.

I agree with the Atlantic’s James Fallows about Trump. “No one like him has gotten this close to the presidency in modern times.” Which is not to say he came out of nowhere, or that there is no precedent for his political style. A long series of developments left the presidential nominating system and the Republican party vulnerable to Trump. A long series of developments, which I tried to summarize here and here, also left political journalism unprepared for the challenge of covering this campaign.

But now we’re here and novelty demands novelty. If journalists are to rise to the occasion in the final six weeks of this campaign, they will have to find a style of coverage as irregular as Trump’s political style. There are powerful forces working against this. But if they don’t try, they are likely to regret it for the rest of their careers.

JER posted this the other day and I sent it to my aunt, who has always had a crush on Harry Belafonte 🙂 (I tried to find a smaller one, but no luck). My aunt pointed out that they appear to be “two lefties” 🙂 At first glance, I didn’t catch that they were shaking left hands. I knew PBO was a left-hander, but apparently so is HB:

The “love in the room” as the President spoke to the tribal nations representatives was palpable. He felt it. I know I felt it! He must be, along with Joey Biden, the finest man in the federal government in recent times! He gives his word; he keeps his word. And when he says he plans to continue working with the tribal nations outside of his official duties, he means it. The only thing that jolted me was when he assured them of the latter by ending his remarks with “See you on the other side!” Let’s add “of January” to that one, Mr. President! (It’s okay – I did it for you in my mind.) (That’s the Irish in me!) ❤

    // …………………………………

I believe that historians will look back at this decade as a moment when our country made some significant choices about the direction we want to go. President Obama has been an inspirational leader in cajoling us to continue the work of “perfecting our union.” The choice between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is historic in that sense. We can decide to push towards our better natures or cower in fear and retreat. As the one person on the ballot who can do the former, that mantle falls on Clinton’s shoulders right now. She is a flawed candidate because she is human – and therefore flawed like the rest of us. But she is running a remarkable campaign in light of the advantages and disadvantages on her plate at this moment in history.

David Fahrenthold of the Washington Post is on the job. Brand new bombshell story about possible tax evasion by Trump. I guess we can see another reason why Trump won’t release his tax returns.

I can’t see all of the inscription; hope it will be shared in a larger photo or article. The giving of this blanket is a high honor of love, respect, and family. I would also like to learn more about the artist and what went in to creating it. One of PBO’s greatest gift is that he always sees people; especially those that many in power or wish to have it ignore. He sees each person as someone of value, with hopes, dreams, and gifts; an important part of the human family. This is one of the reasons that so many love him.

      GE JO’B.

So much makes me want to gag from this appalling election (pretty much EVERYTHING having to do with GOP nominee, words cannot describe the disgust he fills in me), but this is SO wrong.

DJT is the OPPOSITE of an alpha male. A bully, to be sure, but he is a coward who thinks bluster will avoid action. Remember how timid he was with Pastor Timmons in Flint MI? That’s the real DJT — he has assumed the personae of an alpha male, but he’s an insecure bully whose only “skill” is self-promotion.

GE, Arapaho! And, yes, his reaction to Pastor Timmons in Flint was exactly what I was thinking of, when I named him a coward. Prime example! I just want to scream to him: Begone, Satan! (But I’ll calm down.) (Or not.)

I’m so nervous about tonight’s debate. So much is riding on this… hate the GOP so much for doing what they’ve done to this country. 😦

Not a very clear photo, but Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords is in Orlando with Tim Kaine this afternoon:

And Kaine clearly has PBO’s back…

I’m not watching. I can’t stand the sight of Trump nor the sound of his arrogant lies. He repulses me. So I’ll follow on twitter and see how long I last at that. I know HRC will do fine. It’s just the MSM that will not know how to deal with it.

It’s also on TV in australia – but I’m not watching – not now not ever can I look at the man’s ghastly face. My relationship with US politics will be completely gone if I have to look at this face post November (like when the media fall over themselves to give him a job when he loses the election).

So true 99ts! The RW gets all the media jobs after losing. e.g. Michael Steel is another example. Dems never get any such breaks and yet it’s supposed to be the liberal medial!

He always sounds like he has a hand full of marbles in his mouth – they used to do this when I was a kid to teach elocution – seems a permanent thing with Steve Schmidt.

This is cute, from the young man who founded NERDS (Native Education Raising Dedicated Students as 8th grader — remember him from a couple of years ago) and is now a Stanford student — from his Twitter timeline looks like he’s not at the WH today. 😦

Good evening Nerdy & TOD! Wishing everyone a pleasant and peaceful Monday evening – whichever way you choose to spend it. I know for most of us TODers, it will be on Twitter and/or CSPAN. But remember, like 2012, the MSM will try to convince everyone who the winner tonight was, but we can form our own opinions. We’ve been through this before, and we will get through tonight.

I am confident that HRC will do what she needs to do tonight. Ultimately, it’s the voters and turn out on Nov 8 which will decide, not what some pundiot on CNN thinks happened or didn’t happen.

Thanks Donna for your starter kit…It will come in handy… 🙂 🙂

Can anyone here help me connect with @jonfav’s debate coverage?

I mentioned yesterday that I’m doubtful I’ll be able to connect because I’m not a Facebook member. Jazziz2 (Alycee) said I should be able to view without a logon.

When I follow the link, I get a photo, but can’t figure out how to view the podcast (video, whatever).

Is this what happens to others here?

Completely off topic – a random act of kindness – makes life look so good

Albury tradie Tyson Crawley filled up his car with nearly $110 worth of petrol at the weekend, but when he got to the counter to pay, he realised he could not remember the PIN for his new card.
A stranger stepped in and paid for the fuel, and rather than write down his details so Mr Crawley could repay him, he wrote, “Pass it on”.
The stranger then smiled for a photo and went on his way.

(also note how expensive our gas is compared to the US!)

I am recording this on C-span and watching live on MSNBC. I was really nervous in 2008 when Obama and Clinton debated and after the first debate with Romney for Obama. I became comfortable with Obama’s abilities and was less nervous.
This time though I am terrified of Trump showing he is acceptable to the voters because he is not. My fears are not that Hillary will do bad, it is the media propping up Trump. Here we go!
