    Loved the entrance of FLOTUS and POTUS and the Italian Prime Minister and wife. Two beautiful, well dressed women, two handsome, cheerful men. Did you hear POTUS tell Agneste “You look lovely.” Always the gentleman, and truthful.

    Seems to me, the bar is higher for women’s dresses this dinner. More truly gorgeous, festive dresses than some dinners.

    When FLOTUS walked out, my first thought was: Cleopatra! That shimmery cloth reminded me of the Queen of the Nile.

      Love how Chance was listed:

      “Mr. Chance Bennett, Rapper”

      I also noticed that Paolo Sorrentino, the director whose film “The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza)” won the Oscar for best foreign film a couple of years ago, was on the guest list. If any of you have not yet seen “The Great Beauty/La Grande Bellezza”, I highly recommend it! To me it is a masterpiece!

    So in addition to PBO’s half brother (who is THAT supposed to upset?) Trump is bringing the crazy Benghazi mother to the debate tomorrow night. Just to finish this horrendous season off, does anyone want to take bets she stands up in the middle of the debate and starts screaming at Hillary? Count on it. DT will not be satisfied until he has taken every institution/tradition down into the gutter with him.

  35. 71 globalcitizenlinda
    October 18, 2016 at 8:40 pm

    okay, I wish people would take a deep breath about the homegrown demagogue’s threat to bring PBO’s half-brother to the debate;

    the main reason why this should be ignored is that : this specific half-brother is not even going to vote for ANYONE in the US because he is a Kenyan citizen and not a dual-national – unless something changed recently;

    so, if is not an American citizen, he is only able to enter because of a visa issued to him by the US State Department … and this can be revoked any time, if anyone chose to do so;

    most importantly, if the media digs a little more they will realize that he run and lost an election in Kenya and his main selling point he touted at the time is that he the brother of PBO;

    this is PBO’s older brother and is always looking for ways to trade on PBO’s name to cash in both in Kenya and overseas;

    I also wonder how the demagogue’s campaign would explain to his base the fact that the debate guest is not only an immigrant they despise but also he is one of the people he has sworn to deport …, because he is a Moslem.

    Personally, I will follow PBO’s example and ignore this circus and not even mention him again until he does something positive with his life and relationship with PBO

    • 72 FoxfireTX
      October 18, 2016 at 11:05 pm

      I am not concerned about him, like who cares, but am concerned about that Benghazi mother. For four years, she has screamed and cried everywhere anyone would give her an ear. If she shows up, this will be the biggest audience she’s ever had, and I can just see Trump egging her on. The fact that Trump has so debased this process is disgusting. The NYT just posted that the Clinton campaign requested a different entry procedure for the families after the last stunt Trump tried to pull. This way, the families won’t have to cross one another. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/19/us/politics/melania-trump-bill-clinton.html

        October 19, 2016 at 2:06 am

        I’m also concerned that he uses the debate stage for his political stunts. This is meant to be a debate as to who is most suitable to be President. He cannot practice, he doesn’t know how to behave in such a situation – so he does his usual – tries to turn it into a media circus. As last time, it will backfire and he will not understand why those polls, that he doesn’t believe any more are showing more and more votes for his opponent.

    I have been a fan of state dinners since I lived in D.C. during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations. The morning after a dinner, I would check out the pictures in the paper, and memorize the gowns. Friends of ours went to one, and she told us about the “requirements” for dress for women. Of course, at that time, every woman wore elbow length kid gloves…….This friend went to the top store in town and worked with a “consultant” a clerk who did this all the time, for advice. The requirements went from head to toe. I remember her telling us that when she asked about shoes, she was told that “NO, she couldn’t wear patent leather. Only suede shoes.” Funny what we remember. The entire event was stiffer, more formal, really fear inducing to many guests. Mamie had been a general’s wife, and protocol was extremely important to her. Jackie was a product of Newport society, and it was just as important to her. The atmosphere now is relaxed and enjoyable.

  41. October 18, 2016 at 9:34 pm

    I attended the University of Pavia in Northern Italy in 1967-68. The politics then were brutal, left and right locked in battle, sometimes street battles that I witnessed at the time, communists vs. fascists, with clubs. I later attended the University of Bologna for three months in 1971, a program hosted there by the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. By then there had been a number horrific bombings, blamed on the leftists, but later found to be the work of a neo-fascist cell of the masons called P2. When I returned with my wife in 2012 as part of a cruise and holiday I found that things had changed much for the better. Their governance is still unstable as it is a matter of coalitions. However, the two major blocks are the PDS and the PDD, Democratic Party of the Left, and Democratic Party of the Right. At that time Matteo Renzi was a rising star of the PDS as mayor of Florence. In 2013 he took control of the PDS and rode to victory as the new prime minister. Since that time he has been trying to reform the electoral system and the bureaucratic governance of Italy (there is a long legacy of nepotism and corruption). He has put forward a referendum on this process in Nov. Pres. Obama is trying to support him as much as possible in that effort. In my view he is the first political leader in a long time to have an opportunity at real political reform and to undue the damage of the Berlusconi era.

      Thank you for sharing your experiences Bill. I only know about that time during the early 70s from films and books and friends. Glad to know a fellow admirer of PBO also sees potential in Renzi, as I do. From my observations, so many Italian parties seem to dig their heels in and resist any attempt at reform. The people (generally) want jobs and opportunity, but so often say no to projects that could help bring jobs (the NoTav folks come to mind, and Mayor Raggi/M5S refusing the Olympic bid for Rome, etc.) I’m hoping Renzi can make some progress in spite of all the opposition (including from many in his own party).

      I could see him mentally taking notes and nodding admiringly when PBO was speaking at the press conference earlier 🙂

    When Donald Trump ludicrously accused Hillary Clinton, at the first presidential debate, of trying to fight the Islamic State for her “entire adult life,” Clinton didn’t offer a rebuttal. Instead, she issued a request: “Please, fact-checkers, get to work.”

    They were already working. Thanks to the brazenness of Trump’s deceit, fact-checking, that unglamorous journalistic activity once mostly relegated to niche websites and little boxes beside newspaper articles, is having a moment. Big news organizations now assign teams of reporters to fact-check the debates in real time. CNN, among other networks, is using its bottom-screen chyrons to challenge Trump’s most obvious lies. And every day, full-time fact checkers take a false claim, or three, or four, and meticulously explain why it is wrong.

    I decided a month ago that this wasn’t enough.

    What we’re experiencing from Trump is a daily avalanche of wrongness. The essential truth of this election cannot be conveyed with an examination of any one particular chunk of ice. The story is the massive accumulation of nonsense, big stuff and little stuff alike, day after day.

      Great read by Daniel Dale. I am reminded of the amazing work done by Steve Benen back in 2012 with his weekly ‘Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity’ posts. It was exhausting trying to keep up with Mitt’s excessive lying. But Donald Trump is in a class by himself.

    Gov. Chris Christie’s approval rating has dropped to its lowest point yet and is approaching a record level for any New Jersey governor in recent memory, according to a new poll.

    The Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll released Wednesday morning found that the Republican governor’s approval rating stands at just 21 percent, down from 26 percent in July.

    The new poll comes just days after Christie signed into law a 23-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax and as the Bridgegate trial has dominated the news with negative headlines about his administration’s conduct. It also comes as Christie appears to be lowering his profile as a surrogate for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who the governor serves as a top adviser.

    Hillary Clinton heads into Wednesday evening’s presidential debate with a nine-point lead nationally, according to a Bloomberg Politics poll released Wednesday morning.

    Clinton leads Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup among likely voters with 50 percent support to his 41 percent. Four percent said they would either vote for someone else or not vote for president, and 5 percent said they were unsure or didn’t want to say.

    In a four-way contest that includes Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein, Clinton still leads Trump by a nine-point margin, 47 percent to 38 percent. Johnson garners 8 percent support, while Stein has 3 percent support.

    ///

    Clinton tops Trump by 17 points among women and also leads among men, 46 percent to 44 percent, including those without a college a degree, 48 percent to 44 percent.

    “This poll shows movement toward Clinton with all the right groups it takes to win—including men and those without a college degree,” pollster J. Ann Selzer said. “Their alignment with Clinton is a formidable change in the algebra.”
