      1) Call 202-225-0600
      2) **WAIT through 90 seconds of pure dead silence suggesting you have called the Death Star. (Seriously. Don’t hang up. There’s no hold music. It doesn’t even ring. It’s a little odd.) — I actually waited for over 3 minutes in silence
      3) You will get prompted by the survey
      4) Press 2 to participate
      5) Press 1 to register your support for the ACA
SO MANY DEPEND ON ACA, AND IF YOU ARE A STUDENT WITH SUBSIDIZED HEALTH INSURANCE THROUGH YOUR SCHOOL KNOW THAT THE ACA MARKETPLACE IMPACTS YOUR COVERAGE.

Makes my blood boil. She was primaried, but the other dem candidate was very weak, and TG just ignored her– so wrapped up in the Bern. The only things those two had in common was a disdain for PBO, and a contempt for the Dem Party, so that hasn’t changed. I actually voted for the GOP candidate in the general, because at least that person was declaring their true affiliation.

Al Giordano is one the most courageous, truth-telling, journalist. I heard he was thinking of challenging Bernie Sanders for the U.S. Senate, in 2018. If he does, I will enthusiastically support him. Bernie Sanders has been in Congress for 30 years. Although he talks a big game about the working class, he has no record of passing any legislation aimed at improving their lives. More importantly for me, Bernie Sanders has never had the courage to address the deep-seated racism of the white working class, which is the number one reason why they continue to vote for the Republican Party against their own interests. May be Al Giordano can enlighten the people in Vermont that it’s racism, and not economic suffering or economic anxiety, which explains why white working class, and the white Middle-class chose to vote for the Republican Party against their own interests.

        GA Meta.

In my mind, PBO needs a place to entertain and host present and future Asian leaders. A place that’s isolated and roomy enough to accommodate Secret Service and just down the street from Sunnylands, where he’s spent quality time with President Xi.

Don’t know anything about Hawaii, but finding that kind of space without intruding on residents might be more difficult. And like I described to JO’B, it’s heavenly in the wintertime (sun, warmth *and* snow!) and supports vegetation beyond cactus.

He, Michelle and Sasha will spend most of their time in DC for the next couple of years, but seems to me like he would welcome a bit more solitude with Michelle. Maybe it’s just me, and maybe Michelle isn’t thrilled about the isolation, but seems like a perfect retreat to me.

Perfect for brushing up on his golf game too.

      GE JO’B.

      What wonderful news!

Can’t tell you how it warms my heart to hear that PBO (Michelle, and the girls, when they’re free) will no doubt be spending some time in SoCal before winter holidays in Hawaii, after the 8-year wringer he’s been through. In years where we get enough rain, the view driving west from Phoenix during February-March is simply stunning — towering snow-capped San Jacinto peak (11K feet) overlooking the dry desert is breathtaking. Rancho Mirage is about 10 miles west of Palm Springs, nestled at the foothills of the San Jacinto mountains — as you near the mountains, the environment/vegetation is less harsh (there’s more water available the closer you get to the mountains [San Jacinto snowpack melt], which also provide shade from the relentless afternoon heat.

If you travel further west on Interstate 10, towards Los Angeles, you climb to an elevation where there might be snow on both sides of the freeway (in Feb/Mar). Just magnificent.

      From the article:
“The local daily newspaper, the Desert Sun, has reported rumors of such a sale for more than a year. But sources say now it’s a done deal.
The Obamas are also said to have bought a holiday getaway in Obama’s childhood home state of Hawaii.

Folks in the know believe that Los Angeles-based interior designer Michael S. Smith will be in charge of decorating both properties.”

Not sure if this is the same house, but it. is. drop. dead. gorgeous. Be sure to click through the gallery of photos in this article (link to @latimes article still works, yay).

But how realistic is impeachment, with Dems as minority in both houses?

And as bad as Pence as president would be, he’s not unhinged, and doesn’t pose the international threat that DJT does — domestic horrors can be corrected with a new administration, but the ghastly consequences of DJT’s foreign “policy” (aka personal enrichment) could last generations.

Sadly, GOP are closing ranks to pillage and plunder this country. 😦

Hello TODers, most especially to Chips & NW!

I’ve been doing something you all might get into in your states, a cheer-me-up! Every single Federal building has those photos of POTUS, VPOTUS, & whoever is the boss in that agency. These photos are displayed in the lobbies of buildings. I got my first one at the NOAA building by walking in & simply asking the security desk if it’s okay for me to take a photo of that wall. They simply smiled, and said “Please go ahead Ma’am”. Here’s the challenge for TODers: how many of these snaps can we take across the country? I know we ignore buildings as we rush through our daily lives, but we should take those photos because the next ones we’ll see are plain ugly. And they can’t erase our history. It’s also a lot of fun! I don’t know how to post photos I take to TOD, but wouldn’t that be a fabulous post, all our photos from these buildings from all over the US, maybe those who’re overseas can do so at the various US embassies? Maybe we could send the photos to NW and she could do a whole post of all our photos?

    Just a thought. xoxo

    500% off topic

Hello TODers – I am still steeped in misery & looking for ways to ignore the world – so I was thinking of my mother and her favorite poem – by an American . If you haven’t read this – take a break from politics and read the poem/play/story – which many at the time thought was a biography rather than such an insightful write of fiction.

    http://www.famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/alice_duer_miller/poems/19942

The White Cliffs by Alice Duer Miller

Alice Duer Miller (1874-1942) was an American writer whose poetry actively influenced political opinion. Her feminist verses impacted on the suffrage issue, while her verse-play The White Cliffs encouraged US entry into World War II

Of London – such memories it inspires

    We went to the Tower,
    We went to the Zoo,
    We saw every flower
    In the gardens at Kew.
    We saw King Charles a-prancing
    On his long-tailed horse,
    And thought him more entrancing
    Than better kings, of course.
    At a strange early hour,
    In St. James’s palace yard,
    We watched in a shower
    The changing of the guard.
And I said, what a pity,
To have just a week to spend,
    When London is a city
    Whose beauties never end!

Of war – no wonder my mother thought it was a true story

    Lovers in peacetime
    With fifty years to live,
Have time to tease and quarrel
    And question what to give;
    But lovers in wartime
    Better understand
    The fullness of living,
    With death close at hand.

And her father’s view of the English 🙂

‘So, Susan, my dear,’ the letter began,
‘You’ve fallen in love with an Englishman.
Well, they’re a manly, attractive lot,
If you happen to like them, which I do not.
I am a Yankee through and through,
And I don’t like them, or the things they do.
    Whenever it’s come to a knock-down fight
    With us, they were wrong, and we right;
If you don’t believe me, cast your mind
Back over history, what do you find?
    They certainly had no justification
For that maddening plan to impose taxation
    Without any form of representation.
Your man may be all that a man should be,
Only don’t you bring him back to me
Saying he can’t get decent tea—
He could have got his tea all right
In Boston Harbour a certain night,

during one of the post-election protests I saw a photo/video of someone who had a hand-made sign which read ” Your vote was a hate-crime.”

I have been thinking about this sign a lot and wondering how it aptly captures the meaning of people’s vote for the demagogue.

Unfortunately, I don’t know where I can get that photo/video again because given all happened during and after the campaign and is still happening everyday, this is something that captures it all for me.

I urge caution when tweeting (or retweeting) about the DAPL Standing Rock protests. I have reason to suspect that many of the “protesters” are not Native Americans or even residents of the area, but professional anarchists, many of whom happen to be anti-(current) government, Jill Stein bots and Bernie bros. Many of these protesters did NOT vote in the election, or they voted third party, or even for Donald Trump. They are NOT who they claim to be, and their interests are not aligned with that of the Native Americans, but they are self-serving and politically-driven for their own selfish agendas.

I happened to see some of the tweets under the #StandingRock or #DAPL hashtags, and I would estimate than more than 75% of those tweets were decidedly anti-Obama, anti-Hillary, anti-Democratic Party. About 25% of them were explicitly pro-Trump, with most of them pro-Sanders or pro-Jill Stein. I even saw a few of them that were supporting Susan Sarandon. There are some tweets I saw that disturbed me so much, I won’t post them here (e.g., referring to PBO as a “Black supremacist”) The person deleted the tweet after I quoted it as an example.

They are starting gofundme’s all over the place supposedly for this young woman’s medical expenses. This person is a Caucasian NYCer who left NY two weeks to go to the pipeline protests. My B.S-ometer is going off here. Furthermore, the twitter slacktivists are all “Tell OBama this…tell OBama that” but absolutely ZERO mention of the state and local authorities in North and South Dakotas – who are likely Republican.

My bottom line is that ANYTHING led by Bernie and his crew of affluent anarchists are suspect in my book. This “movement” reminds me a lot of OWS. And it’s main purpose seems to be to distract from the disaster of the current President-elect and his outrageous behavior, corruption in his cabinet selection process, etc. All that while trying to bring down PBO’s stellar approval numbers and to damage (what increasingly looks like) his admirable legacy.

    • November 22, 2016 at 8:33 am

My rant, had to, pardon me:

Dear Dems & all those who’re supposed to represent us in the Senate & House. This comes down to all of you acknowledging that this election was all about racism, xenophobia, bigotry, etc. It had absolutely nothing to do w/ white so-called disenfranchised whatevers. Let’s get that straight and out there and stop pretending it’s anything than what it truly is. Stop the usual verbiage nonsense enhanced by the media, & pay attention. Start w/ cancelling the word “Alt-right”. Call it what it is: white supremacy, fascist, Neo Nazi. Has any of you or media types actually asked what the heck is “Alt” about that “Right”?

Again to you Dems in Senate, you’re now going to lose your base by going all Chuck Schumer-like this week: “let’s appease those so-called disenfranchised white voters, let’s praise DT, etc.” Those pretend-disenfranchised people have finally been exposed. They were never disenfranchised, just their fear of losing their imaginary white privilege. These so-called white voters that Democratic office runners have been chasing for decades are a concocted tale, a myth that was put out there to curtail Dem outreach. Stop that nonsense! Get over your pungent Dixiecrat notions (which prompted you to not support the best president the Dem party & nation has seen in years. A president who grew the party’s coalition, yet had no support from most of you all for over 8 years, because you all determined, along w/ that party of republicans on Inauguration Day of 01/20/09 that it wasn’t his time, he was an uppity Black. Be damned if he had great ideas for this nation). The voters won twice. So there you have it.

So, pardon me Chuck Schumer if I’m not thrilled at couple or so of these choices you’ve made for the now current Dem leadership in the senate & your usual penchant for appeasing your republicans. This is not the same republican party you’ve hanged with the last few decades. They are a shark in the throes of death, do not let them smell your damn blood! Wake the heck up! The country itself is at stake, not your fragile egos. Wake UP and do your damn jobs! Before you become fossils as the republicans. They just have one limb left before total atrophy. Are you choosing to carry their rotten limb of racism forward, and therefore lose the soul of this country to demagogues. Is that your plan? It will fail. We The People are not, ever going back to whatever imaginary era these fools want to sink this country of ours into. Nope.

Elections, even stolen ones, have consequences. The highly successful CFPB could be radically altered …and not in a good way. Stupid, stupid people….

For consumers, perhaps the most significant aspect of Dodd-Frank was creation of the CFPB, a watchdog agency charged with protecting the interests of credit card holders, home loan recipients and others who in the past may have found themselves largely powerless to stand up against such powerful business interests.

Since it got up and running, the bureau says it has recovered about $12 billion ripped off from consumers by illegal or questionable practices. This month, for example, the CFPB filed a lawsuit against Virginia’s B&B Pawnbrokers “for deceiving consumers about the actual annual cost of its loans.”

The business community says the CFPB has too much power. Most consumers would probably counter that if businesses kept their noses clean, there’d be no need for such an agency.

“Dodd-Frank and specifically the bureau have been incredibly cost-effective,” said Sally Greenberg, executive director of the National Consumers League. “They have delivered billions of dollars wrongfully taken from consumers.”

She said critics of the CFPB are guided not so much by concerns of regulatory overreach but rather by a feeling among financial firms that any additional supervision is unnecessary.

“In fact, the agency has done a terrific job of being even-handed,” Greenberg said. “It should continue on the course it’s on.”

      That seems unlikely.

Did I blink or something? I know Nancy Pelosi gets challenged each time but what is the deal this time? Which wing of the party are we talking about now?

    • November 22, 2016 at 9:16 am

Just as Schumer put Sanders and Warren in leadership positions…so too they want to change the house…but they cannot do that without moving Pelosi to the side….

Tim Ryan…i checked his TL…not much to see….but someone suggested he do this…

Ellison for DNC Chair….move Pelosi to the side… i bet she knew this was coming….will be interesting to see who sides with who..

another point…Pelosi is a strong supporter of the President…

i can’t help but think that all these DEM moves in the House and the Senate are trying to minimize the influence of President Barack Obama post Presidency…

How Ryan Plans to Undermine Obamacare
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    November 22, 2016 8:44 AM

There has been a lot of talk lately about the challenge Trump and Republicans face in meeting their promise to repeal Obamacare. The argument has been that, without a plan to replace ACA (which Republicans haven’t been able to agree on), to simply repeal it means that approximately 20 million people will lose the insurance they’ve signed up for via the exchanges. There are, of course, other challenges, such as how to make the provision that eliminated the ability to refuse coverage for those with pre-existing conditions affordable without the mandate and subsidies. But let’s leave those for another day to focus on what is likely to be Speaker Paul Ryan’s plan for undermining the exchanges.

Tierney Sneed reports that House Republicans are reviewing their plans about whether or not to continue a lawsuit they filed against Obamacare known as House vs Burwell. To review what that is about, it is important to know that the law included several provisions to make insurance affordable on the exchanges. One of those is that, for enrollees who earn between 100 and 250 percent of the federal poverty line, the government provides cost-sharing subsidies to insurance companies in order to limit out-of-pocket expenses. These are separate from the subsidies individuals receive directly based on their income.

From the time the exchanges were implemented, House Republicans have refused to appropriate the money for these cost-sharing subsidies. The Obama administration found a work-around for that in tying them to the tax credits which are available to enrollees. In House vs Burwell, Republicans challenged that work-around and won a ruling from a DC Circuit Court Judge. Payment of the subsidies has continued awaiting appeal by the administration.

    Here is what Sneed reported:

House Republicans led by Speaker Paul Ryan filed a court document Monday evening asking an appeals court to pause the proceedings in the case, known as House v. Burwell. A senior GOP aide said the move was made to give the new administration the opportunity to weigh how to handle the lawsuit.

While Sneed suggests that how the Trump administration handles this will tell us a lot about how they plan to proceed on repealing Obamacare, the signal has already been sent. Rather than risk losing the case, what is likely to happen is that the president-elect will simply drop the appeal and stop paying the subsidies – claiming the circuit court judge has already deemed them illegal. That means that insurance companies will face a decision about whether or not to significantly raise premiums or get out of the exchanges altogether…at which point Republicans will claim that they failed.

This is classic Republicanism – especially the kind we’ve seen from Speaker Paul Ryan. What it amounts to is that they do what they can to ensure the failure of government programs and then claim that their condemnation of those programs was correct. It is similar to what Ryan is likely to try to do with Medicare. The plan is to remove the Obamacare cost savings to that program and then claim that Medicare is going broke and needs to be privatized.
