I left on the 19th of December. Arriving home last night. Missed all of you, but I cannot say I missed the drama and fear Trump creates. For those who have forgotten I went to Germany and Austria for the holidays and my daughter’s wedding, the last of my four children to be married. There were sixteen of our family traveling from the USA to Germany. Her now German husband had family from Germany and Turkey attending too. They were married in Salzburg in the Marble Hall in the Mirabell Palace. Then we spend five days in the Alps. No snow till we left except for the manmade snow on the ski runs. Family coming from AK, MN, NV, OR, and WA read about all the snow at home in the mountains. Those we met wanted to know about our feelings on Trump. All sixteen of us opposed him vehemently and did not want their locals thinking we were for him. They feared him for his effect on the world.

Welcome back, OG, what a wonderful trip for you and your family!

Never been to Austria, but been in love with Salzburg since the Sound Of Music movie.

Surprised to hear there was no snow in the Alps, but must have made getting around a bit easier for you.

        Lovely news.

Thanks all. It was a fairy tale wedding and wonderful Xmas and NYs. Did okay till the very last night. Woke up hardly able to walk. Needed a wheelchair to get me to the airport. Thank goodness my Sister-in-Law problem solved the situation. It was sort of like when I overdid the stairs during jury duty and was laid up for awhile. Dr said it was like a strain and needed a rest. Remember? I had a hip and knee replacement this last year on the same time I order to go on this trip.
        Again, thanks all.

Good day TOD. These weeks are HARD! Cried throughout FLOTUS’ speech today. Despite everything she has endured, she is even more filled with grace and dignity. And she still preaches hope. Life is going to be empty without these two in the news every day.

I haven’t watched national media since 2008, the night POTUS was elected. I quit them w/o a backward glance 😉 I only watch local media when something occurs in my neighborhood… but I do read online news. But I am very very selective on what I click/ read. And thanks to you folks here at TOD and some good people on Twitter, I believe I’m pretty well informed.

Not that I’d have posted *this* particular one – despite grudgingly admitting now that it *looks* pretty – since I’ve been trying to ignore how unbelievably cold it has been all week!

BTW, it’s 4 degrees F here right now (maybe I mentioned that already – Ha! – I’ve been complaining all over the place), to dip to 3 degrees F tonight. So, yeah, warm photos would help us all!

I did a quick check and we are -13 degrees C – which is apparently 8.6 degrees F – so you know who is trying not to complain that all my skin feels ‘chilly’ even though the heat’s on and I’m almost under the blankets.

(Took this photo just after I bought the little fairy and miniature pedestal bowl at local Goodwill 50% off Customer Appreciation Day — think the bowl is alabaster, but not sure. Was hoping for a better photo where you can see the base of the bowl, but haven’t had the time while it’s still light outside, plus it’s been raining a lot here during the past month).

Maybe someone should tell Gov. Scott that DJT is NOT THE PRESIDENT!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/ft-lauderdale-airport-shooting_us_586fdb46e4b02b5f8588a0bb

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) said at a press conference that he briefed President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence on the shooting, to keep them “informed.” He did not reach out to President Barack Obama.

    • January 6, 2017 at 7:42 pm

And, of course, the real President is often the one to “call first” because he, unlike the next (God help us) occupant of the Oval Office, sees himself as a servant of the people, not as a king on a throne whom you must call first in your ivory tower. Ugh.

He has had enough of senseless death and destruction and fighting those who refuse to help to make a difference. It is time for him to leave this burden to others, but we know it will not be anyone from the new admin. However, I am sure that very few if any who were affected by this would want the Deplorable One anywhere near.

DHS designates election systems as ‘critical infrastructure’

    Source: The Hill

The Obama administration on Friday afternoon announced that it has designated the country’s election infrastructure as ‘critical,’ a move that brings added federal protections to voting systems. “Given the vital role elections play in this country, it is clear that certain systems and assets of election infrastructure meet the definition of critical infrastructure, in fact and in law,” Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson said in a statement.

The administration has been weighing the move for some time. The announcement coincides with a report from the Intelligence Community detailing its assessment that Russia undertook a widespread influence and cyber campaign targeted at helping Donald Trump win the White House.

The Intelligence Community said Friday that no voting machines were tampered with during the 2016 election — but the breadth of the Russian cyber activity throughout the campaign raised the specter that the election infrastructure is vulnerable to digital intruders. The IC did find that Russian intruders breached elements of multiple state and local electoral boards.

The new designation will cover storage facilities, polling places, and centralized vote tabulations locations used to support the election process, as well as information and communications technology like voter registration databases, voting machines and other systems used to manage the election process and report results.

No more LL Bean for me!

AUGUSTA — L.L. Bean heiress Linda Bean made excessive contributions to a political action committee she bankrolled to support Republican President-elect Donald Trump, the Federal Election Commission said.

Making America Great Again LLC was limited to individual contributions of $5,000, according to a letter Wednesday from federal regulators obtained by The Associated Press. Federal campaign finance reports show Bean contributed $60,000 while the group spent $66,862.

The FEC letter said the group could face punitive action or an audit if it doesn’t respond.

The group on Friday responded by taking steps recommended by the FEC to change its registration to a super PAC that can raise unlimited funds. The group, which also goes by the name Making Maine Great Again, spent the funds on signs, Facebook and radio advertisements and 30-second TV ads in support of Trump.

Hope is our familiar friend supporting one another each and every day. This week I was watching something about an historical event and one line of the drama was about faith. The quote was something like faith is daring to do that which cannot be done. It struck me that faith is just as important right now as hope and has been part and parcel of the Obama legacy as anything else has been. With all branches of government in fascist control in the US resistance may seem like something that cannot be done and yet I see it happening anyway. Also what comes to mind is that in my faith tradition we are told faith as small as a mustard seed is all that is required.

Faith, hope and love, may they grow in each of us and everyone that yearns for a fairer, healthier, more inclusive world community and may our country find that mustard seed and grow it until we get through the evil that is poised to engulf us. At least now we have a clearer picture of the true depth of self centeredness in those that have opposed the progress we have been trying to make. I won’t think of our differences as conflict any longer but as abuse.

Woman prosecuted by Jeff Sessions can’t forgive
    11:19 AM ET, Fri January 6, 2017

Marion, Alabama (CNN) – Evelyn Turner says she still has nightmares about what happened in this small Alabama city more than three decades ago. And it involves President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Jeff Sessions.

The year was 1985 and Sessions, then a US attorney, prosecuted an infamous voter fraud case that captured the nation’s attention, and had civil rights leaders rallying behind the accused. Known as the “Marion Three,” Turner, her husband Albert, and Spencer Hogue Jr. faced dozens of charges that their attorneys said were racially motivated. Session’s office disputed that, then and now.
Today, at 80 years old, Turner doesn’t hold back her feelings.

“I hate him just that bad,” she told CNN. “And he shouldn’t be up for anything, not even a dog catcher.”

Albert Turner Sr. was a civil rights activist who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. He was King’s field director in Alabama, and began building political power in the black community in Perry County, Alabama, where he formed the Perry County Civic League at a time when segregation was the norm. Evelyn Turner said her husband was devoted to registering blacks to vote, getting more political representation for minorities, more services, and she says, he frequently ran into opposition from the politicians who were used to having Perry County run by their own rules.

“They didn’t want us to be in charge because there’s more black folks in Perry County than there is white,” Turner said, adding her husband “just wanted equal rights for all citizens.”

It’s not far fetched. What I don’t understand is, with all we know now, why are we STILL treating this FRAUD ELECTION, like it’s the real deal? This was not a FREE and FAIR election! We now have a President SELECT….with the help of Russia! That will do the bidding of RUSSIA over the US! Will do the bidding for HIMSELF and his businesses, over the welfare and benefit of the citizens of the USA. WHY ARE WE NOT SCREAMING FOR ANOTHER ELECTION TO TAKE PLACE??? Why are we treating this as if it were legit??

I think it’s because we just can’t believe it. Fundamentally we have always trusted our election process and so we can’t believe we’ve been infiltrated so easily. And also, racism… white people really supported Trump, so can’t believe they’ve been duped.

The Tea Party’s ideas were wrong, and their often racist rhetoric and physical threats were unacceptable. But they understood how to wield political power and made two critical strategic decisions. First, they organized locally, focusing on their own members of Congress. Second, they played defense, sticking together to aggressively resist anything with President Obama’s support. With this playbook, they rattled our elected officials, targeting Democrats and Republicans alike.

Politics is the art of the possible, and the Tea Party changed what was possible. They waged a relentless campaign to force Republicans away from compromise and tank Democratic legislative priorities like immigration reform and campaign finance transparency. Their members ensured that legislation that did pass, like the Affordable Care Act, was unpopular from the start. They hijacked the national narrative and created the impression of broad discontent with President Obama.

The Tea Party’s success was a disaster for President Obama’s agenda and for our country, but that success should give us hope today. It proved the power that local, defensive organizing can have.

With this in mind, we coordinated a group of former congressional staffers and advocates to develop “Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda.” It takes a few pages from the Tea Party playbook, focusing on its strategic choices and tactics, while dispensing with its viciousness. It’s the Tea Party inverted: locally driven advocacy built on inclusion, fairness and respect. It’s playing defense, not to obstruct, but to protect.

We need to get this done. There are more of us and we have history and what’s right on our side. Morning everyone.

yup, all said & done, the teanutz were smarter at electoral politics. they had taken Obama’s ‘value your vote’ seriously in every election. pity that’s the only thing they had taken seriously while the fucking dem base totally missed the seriousness of his 24×7 preaching and sat on its ass. a twofer.

Trump would give his left nut for any one of those stars to appear at his inauguration, but President Obama gets them all to come out on a cold rainy night.

I plan to schedule my lunch for whatever time he speaks. Close my office door, fire up my lap top.

        EXACTLY.

President Obama has been a cool, compassionate, accomplished President who cares deeply about the arts and humanities, science, sports and our future. He’s magnetic, smart and FUN. Most of all, he’s comfortable in his own skin. I will always love him.

We have to make this stick to him like glue. As much as I detest the Teaparty, copy them.

NOW is the time to demand a DO OVER!! America needs to be furious!! If we do nothing, they will know that the American people can be easily manipulated and they can devise new and better ways to effect our elections from now on….
