      Congrats, Don!

Happy Sunday TODers, and what a glorious Sunday it is, after the monumental marches in this country and across the globe. As Meta said, PBO would be proud — as this is the true community organizing.

Nerdy, mega thanks for your hard work!! 🙂

I was thinking the same thing; Barack has to be laughing at this poop-show. And Michelle, Michelle is probably sipping some wine and reading a magazine. And just wait until they get back to town, they are going to suck all the air out of Washington by their mere presents and that is going to drive Trump more insane.

“Among the many legacies President Obama will leave behind, there is this: he was the best basketball-playing President we’ve ever had. For eight years we’ve caught snippets of President Obama’s game, which—despite his lanky, sweatpants’d frame—showcased the unique swagger he tapped into throughout his presidency. In talking to people who’ve stepped onto the court with him (and against him), it’s clear that the sport provides a window into the identity of the eternally smooth 44th President of the United States. What we discovered was a guy who liked to talk a little trash, hated to lose (and rarely did), and liked to go left—which seemed to work out as well for him as it did for us.”

….Dan Pfeiffer (Former White House Communications Director and Senior Advisor): We were at an event in South Carolina during the campaign in 2007. The President stopped to do a short interview, and then someone tossed him a basketball and we’re live on CNN. And I’m like, “Do not shoot this. Do not shoot this. Do not shoot this.” In the stupid world of politics, the metaphor of the candidate missing a shot on live television would have been unfortunate. And he kind of looks at me, like, “Really?” And fires one, and makes it, live on television, sort of feeding the legend of Obama, clutch individual. And [then he] walks into the rally. Which is something that he brought up with me for at least five years afterwards. Every time I would jokingly tell him not to do something, he would point out that I had told him not to make that shot, and he had made it. It was in jest but it was pretty serious, too. The point he was making always was: I’m good at moments like these, so don’t doubt me.

….Shane Battier(former NBA player): We went through security, and then we got in cars and vans on the grounds and went over to the naval base where the game was going to be held. And that was probably the most exciting part: We got these Navy SEALS driving us—I think it was Alonzo Mourning and Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul—and they were doing offensive driving with us in the back, ripping through turns. Judging by all the security and the car it took to get there, it was probably the safest place we could have been in the entire world. There’s a code when you’re shooting around with a bunch of guys, getting ready for a game. They talk a little differently, they walk a little differently. Especially at the NBA level. I don’t know how to explain it, but that’s what I was most impressed with about the President. He fit right in. I think that’s maybe one of the most defining attributes of his eight years. He could talk to really any group. He could make you feel like he was one of you.
…Marty Nesbitt: The first possession when the president had the ball, Chris Paul was guarding him. He took a couple of dribbles right, and then he crossed over and went left, and then he threw this behind-the-head pass to Pau Gasol, who made a lay-up. It was spectacular. I was teasing Chris Paul a little bit. He said, “Hey, man, I led the NBA in steals. If I wanted to take that—” And I said, “No question, but you didn’t know the man could really play, right? So he surprised you.” He just didn’t expect that Barack could play as well as he could
…..Chris Paul (Guard, Los Angeles Clippers): I was shocked at how good he was. Nice lefty jump shot. But he got lucky one time on the break. I sort of jumped out, made him guess which way to go and he made the right play, crossed over, made it look like he crossed me up. It’ll never happen again. Hopefully, now that he’s out of office we’ll have some time to see if it was real.

….Samantha Power (United States Ambassador to the United Nations): At one point, there was a horrible thing that happened in Haiti: an earthquake that wiped out the whole U.N. leadership. We were a few days into it, managing the crisis. The President was sending troops. We had a call with the Secretary General. It was just a very stressful time, and [Obama] said to me, “Do you want to go shoot some hoops?” I had worked with him for a long time, I had never played basketball with him, and I love basketball. And I was like, “Uh… I don’t know.” Then I went back to my office, and everyone was like, “How could you have done that?! What are you, crazy?” It was just a cringe-worthy moment, knowing for the rest of your life you could have said, “Yeah, I went left on him, and he had nothing.” …..and tons more fun/interesting anecdotes in the summation 🙂

      OMG, this is awesome.

      • January 22, 2017 at 12:28 pm

Right! There are soool many cool stories. My personal favorite (I think) is when Alexi Giannoulias (former Illinois state treasurer; played at Boston University): The night before the Iowa caucuses, we got a call from the now-president. [Obama campaign treasurer] Marty Nesbitt comes up to me and says, “I think he wants to play some ball. Can you find a gym? Oh, and it’s got to be private, and it’s got to be really close to here, and we have to have it to ourselves.” And I’m like, “How the fuck—in Des Moines, Iowa, you want this by tomorrow morning? You want me to find a gym that we can play ball in a few blocks from here, in a state that I know nothing—” And he goes, “Yeah, can you make it happen?” And I was like, “No.” And then I called literally the only guy I know in Iowa. And he goes, “I have the perfect place.” We go to this gym—dusty floor, freezing cold. We didn’t even have ten guys. So the guy who opened up [the gym] for us and was sweeping the floors ended up being our tenth. We play, he wins the Iowa caucuses in a state that’s 92 percent white. We don’t play in New Hampshire, he loses New Hampshire. So he’s like, “Alright. We’ve got a tradition. We’re going to play every caucus and every primary day.”

The 10th man was the janitor 😀 😀

Folks are already “man-splaining” the Women’s March. All of them need to stfu; they women were loud and clear.
Poetry is one of the places that I go to for solace, inspiration, and affirmation and obviously so do many others. The website poetry.org had more hits in the days following the election than at any time before. The most popular poem was “Still, I Rise” and others by Langston Hughes. Here are some lines from Elizabeth Alexander’s poem, “Praise Song for the Day” that was commissioned for PBO’s first inauguration that are appropriate for this moment:

I know there is something better down the road.
We need to find a place where we are safe.
We walk into that which we cannot yet see.

Say it plain: that many have died for this day.
Sing the names of the dead that brought us here.

Praise song for struggle, praise song for the day.
Praise song for every hand-lettered sign.

    Love beyond martial, filial, national,
Love that casts a widening pool of light,
Love with no need to pre-empt grievance.

In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air,
anything can be made, any sentence begun.
On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp,
praise song for walking forward in that light.

I saw a bill introduced to shut down the US participation in the UN. That’s a dream of the Christian religious fanatics that demonize it. The act to move the embassy in the eyes of the criminally religiously fanatic of the Christian persuasion believe if a conflagration of enormous magnitude is started in the Middle East, of course with the Jews as the surrogates, then they can be lifted up to heaven. If this happens before they happen to experience their physical death say from old age, they can skip all that. Its a big incentive. Crazy but that was part of what George Bush decided to believe in when he got his come to Jesus moment.

In the spring of 2008, I told a friend that I felt that Barack Obama was being called into place by the future, and that it was a feminine force that was calling him. Later that year, because of other experiences, I came to call this force ‘the mothers, the grandmothers and the great-grandmothers.’ I’ve never stopped feeling this, and feeling that we who have stood so strongly by him for 8 years have been part of the energy of this force. Last week, as he returned to the life of citizen that he so reveres, I had the feeling I had when my son turned 18, that I’d seen him through. Of course, the energy doesn’t stop there. I’m still seeing my now almost 30 year old son into his vision of himself. And we will continue to see Barack Obama’s vision to fruition. And the feminine force continues, pulling together millions of women, children and men all over the globe. Though I’m terrified of the damage Trump and the colluding Republicans will now unleash, I take comfort in knowing that that force is literally on the march.

I decided at some point that I have been holding vigil with the President and all those that so deeply connected with his spirit and goals. This past week it was very intense. I was holding him close I realized and would not could not focus on anything else. I was unable to initiate anything other than the simplest of tasks. It was like all the force of my being was tuned to him, carrying him through this depressing monstrosity of an inauguration and the goodbyes I knew he would be saying with his wife. I just knew he needed our collective strength.

Don, I’m instituting a #lookat the shiny object hashtag for just such moments like this. He did it all during the campaign and the media lapped it up like puppies sucking from their mothers test. The media is so busy reporting on the shiny object, meanwhile behind his back is the real truth that you are failing to look at. Money over facts. Are there real journalists out there? The ones that actually studied or are we stuck with bloggers and talking heads who only repeat “alternative facts” in order to keep the money flowing?

I invite people to watch it or listen to it. The man that was sworn Friday as POTUS is mentally sick. There is a level of incoherence that is troubling. The only thing he has spoken about was how potent he was. But it was about him, his polls, the size of crowds, his campaign, his win, etc.

    It is very worrisome.

Check in from time to time…

    CBS News, 22 mins ago
“The White House response is that he’s not going to release his tax returns,” Conway said. “We litigated this all through the election.”

This is a shift from Mr. Trump’s position during the campaign, when he said he would release his taxes as soon as they were no longer under routine audit. Though presidents aren’t required by law to release their returns, every president since Richard Nixon has done so voluntarily. […]

“People didn’t care,” Conway said. “They voted for him, and let me make this very clear: Most Americans are — are very focused on what their tax returns will look like while President Trump is in office, not what his look like.”

However, polling shows that voters overwhelmingly want Mr. Trump to release his returns. An ABC/Washington Post poll released last week found that 74 percent of Americans wanted Mr. Trump to release his returns — including 49 percent of Republicans.

An official estimate from D.C. Metro authority shows that the transit system had its second-busiest day ever on Saturday as crowds from the Women’s March streamed into Washington, surpassed only by ridership on the day of President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

The number of entries into the Metro on Saturday was second only to the number of entries on Jan. 20, 2009, according to a statement by Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld cited in a Washington Post report
