Michael Wolff Suggests the Media Is Having a Nervous Breakdown Over Trump
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    February 6, 2017 1:05 PM

I have to admit that I found Michael Wolff’s column about Steve Bannon in The Hollywood Reporter to be informative. With that said, let’s hope the media doesn’t listen to what he wrote in Newsweek about why they keep losing to Donald Trump, or what he said to Brian Stelter yesterday.

First of all, given this president’s abysmal approval ratings, it is not clear that the media is losing anything by fact-checking the administration, except in the minds of Trump’s most avid supporters. But as Wolff told Stelter, he thinks the media is having a nervous breakdown over Trump and should instead be covering him like they would any other new president, despite the fact that he lies prolifically, has business arrangements that present conflicts of interest and faces unanswered accusations of being blackmailed by Vladimir Putin. That makes this situation unprecedented and the media would be remiss to pretend otherwise.

During the interview, Wolff’s fluff piece on Kellyanne Conway came up. Here’s how he described her infatuation with “alternative facts.”

And while the “alternative facts” statement might seem like a catastrophic error of credibility — a few days later she was walking it back, rephrasing it as “alternative information” and “incomplete information” — it was the kind of challenge-me-if-you-can, chin-forward taunt, rendered with ladylike composure, that the new president has come to love her for.

Given that the interview with Stelter came a few days after her latest rollout of alternative facts, one can only assume that if Conway had told Wolff the lies about how Obama banned Iraqi refugees due to the Bowling Green massacre, he would be equally impressed with her “ladylike composure” while doing so.

Wolff suggested that by fact-checking this administration, the credibility of the media becomes a problem. So it’s interesting to note how he opened his piece in Newsweek.

Foreign Policy Via Fake News and Propaganda
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    February 6, 2017 4:07 PM

Let this one sink in for a moment: last week the President of the United States posted a fake news story on his Facebook account

At 12:25 p.m. on February 2, President Trump posted a story on his official Facebook page which contended that Kuwait issued a visa ban for five Muslim-majority countries…

It has some 250,000 likes, over 68,000 shares, and was picked up by Breitbart and Infowars. But there’s one problem: Kuwait denies that anything of this sort ever took place.

You would think that a POTUS would have access to information preventing him from posting fake news about a foreign country. But I suppose that would require running things by people in places like the State Department or this country’s intelligence services. Why bother with that when a fake news site posted something that supports your recent visa ban?

But the issue is actually more serious than that. It appears as though the people surrounding Trump join him in buying into fake news as propaganda.

In reporting on what Trump’s foreign policy might be beyond walls and bans, Julie Pace got a scoop on something Josh Marshall described as “deeply disturbing.”

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/06/politics/9th-circuit-court-of-appeals-trump-travel-ban/index.html?adkey=bn

(CNN)Three federal judges Tuesday evening will hear oral arguments in the challenge to President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration.

The hour-long hearing, conducted by telephone among three West coast judges at 6 p.m. ET, will determine the immediate fate of the nationwide temporary restraining order against Trump’s travel ban.

Trump has only been in office for 17 days, but his Justice Department is already embroiled in a high-stakes legal battle that could affect hundreds of thousands of people and the direction of his presidency.

Attorneys general for Washington and Minnesota, which challenged the executive order, say that the temporary restraining order should remain in place because the President had “unleashed chaos” by signing the order.

Trump administration official Omarosa Manigault was harassed last weekend while shopping for dresses with her bridesmaids…

A witness told the newspaper Manigault and her companions were in the shopping center’s Nordstrom when two women began pestering her.

“These fat ladies won’t stop following me,” Manigault reportedly told department store employees.
“They were letting her having it,” in front of about a dozen onlookers, the Post’s source said, and one woman allegedly called Manigualt “Trump’s whore.”

While the memories of this day fill me with so much pride, it also highlights just how horrifying is our present under the dishonorable, criminal, ignorant, and incompetent, illegitimate governance of a bloated puppet who is the complete anti-thesis of our dear PBO. We went from being the proud citizens of a country whose leader was universally respected (even by our enemies) and admired, to being hostages under the a fool who is universally reviled. It is all too much to bear.

        • February 6, 2017 at 8:44 pm

I feel the very same way. I just watched the speech and it was so exhilarating. The introduction and the end piece by the British were both absolutely beautiful. How grateful they were to have him speak before them!! It’s heartbreaking to see and feel how low we’ve sunk from the days when we had a truly amazing human being as our President.

If I close my eyes and let myself go, I can pretend that this man, this magnificent and honorable President…still sits in the Oval Office…and we are all going to be ok…and the world holds us in high regard, and I can listen to his sincere, commanding voice forever….and know that the rest of the world respects him, too. I had never seen this until now. Thank you, meta. Thank you so much.

        • February 6, 2017 at 8:50 pm

You are so welcome. After watching the man in the British Parliament berate Trump, I remembered that PBO was the first American President invited to speak there. I Googled it and there it was. The same man who berated Trump introduced PBO in 2011 and it was so magnificent I had to share it here. The speech is tremendously quintessential PBO, eloquent and compassionate and hopeful and respectful. Truly, truly heartbreaking when in contrast to the horrifying self-absorbed nonsense we’re subjected to now every damn day.

Thank you for posting this! It is good to see again. I have mentioned my memories of it several times, but it is wonderful to see it. That was a high point in U.S. Britain relations, I think. We had their respect and adulation. He had the respect of the entire world, which he earned.

I remember traveling to Europe during Bush, then during Obama’s time. What a difference! Now it is going to be worse than Bush’s time.

    2) Here’s Martin Heinrich speaking today, mentioning DeVos’ plan to siphon federal funds away from public schools:

    • February 6, 2017 at 9:10 pm

“It is literally painful to write this sentence, but the president of the United States is a pathological liar. The president of the U.S. is a racist (it also hurts to write this). He is attempting a coup from the top; he wants to establish an illiberal democracy, or worse; he wants to undermine the balance of power. He fired an acting attorney general who held a differing opinion from his own and accused her of “betrayal.” This is the vocabulary used by Nero, the emperor and destroyer of Rome. It is the way tyrants think.”

“That’s why under President Trump, both the justified and the contemptible will be melded. Injustice is a major issue of our times, as are fears of digitalization and globalization — and rightfully so given that the division of society and the speed of modern life is, in fact, extreme. Trump fuses these worries of his voters with nationalism and xenophobia. That’s how demagogues work and it is how they become effective. The fact that the United States, a nuclear superpower that has dominated the world economically, militarily and culturally for decades, is now presenting itself as the victim, calling in all seriousness for “America first” and trying to force the rest of the world into humiliating concessions is absurd. But precisely because this nonsense is coming from the world’s most powerful man, it is getting trapped by him.

This is not a threat that will somehow resolve itself. The German economy has become the target of American trade policy and German democracy is ideologically antithetical to Trump’s vision. But even here, in the middle of Germany, right-wing extremists are trying to give him a helping hand. It is high time that we stand up for what is important: democracy, freedom, the West and its alliances.

This does not mean escalation or that we must abandon our contacts with America and all the working groups between our governments. What is does mean, though, is that Europe must grow stronger and start planning its political and economic defenses. Against America’s dangerous president.”

      Couldn’t agree more.

Never, with Nixon or Bush/Cheney, did I ever think I’d witness this day.

      But, it is that day.

The day America is legitimately feared because of lunatic with nukes and a GOP House & Senate with ZERO Guts.

At first I thought you meant Trump, because I was scrolling up – but guess you meant Spicer. I’ll take Trump first, Alex, and I’ll pay YOU the $500.

Was thinking if Trump booted Spicer, he’d try to replace him with Priebus, which would be a downgrade and a slap in the face because probably he recommended his buddy Spicer from the RNC, which would mean the end of both Spicer and Priebus (well, if Reince had any soul, which he doesn’t, and he’d walk out).

In her case, however, I don’t care if she self-identifies as a junkyard dog, I’m not making any statements – even broadly – in her “defense,” because she lies, then lies to cover up her lies, then lies again. Among all the other stuff she does. And if CNN finally wants to … er … mention that, go for it. Also in the story is an interesting twist tossed in by Mika B of Morning Joke, ICYMI.
