    Howdy, TOD! A distinction refresher for those interested:

    “…..What Is the special counsel’s jurisdiction?

    The scope of the special counsel’s investigation is set by the attorney general, and comes with “the authority to investigate and prosecute federal crimes committed in the course of, and with intent to interfere with, the Special Counsel’s investigation, such as perjury, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence, and intimidation of witnesses; and to conduct appeals arising out of the matter being investigated and/or prosecuted.” The special council’s jurisdiction is limited to criminal matters, meaning that civil and administrative violations of the law are beyond its scope.The special counsel’s jurisdiction can be expanded at the attorney general’s discretion.

    How is the investigation staffed?

    Once appointed, a special counsel can request that career Justice Department staff be temporarily detailed to work on the investigation. “The Department shall gather and provide the Special Counsel with the names and resumes of appropriate personnel available for detail. The Special Counsel may also request the detail of specific employees, and the office for which the designated employee works shall make reasonable efforts to accommodate the request.” On specific request, a special counsel may also be allowed to hire people from outside the Justice Department.

    Who does the special counsel answer to?

    A special counsel operates very much like a U.S. attorney, with a key exception: Once in place he or she is under no obligation “to inform or consult with the Attorney General or others within the Department about the conduct of his or her duties and responsibilities….cont”

    President Donald Trump, frustrated by his aides’ handling of the multiple scandals engulfing the White House, is turning to the comfort of his old campaign advisers.

    Former officials including Jason Miller, David Bossie and Corey Lewandowski have slid back into the president’s group of advisers as Trump has chafed at the steady stream of damaging leaks and critical blind quotes that have flowed out of the West Wing.

    While it’s not clear any of these old hands will ultimately land a job in the White House, Trump has been weighing a major staff overhaul, according to multiple people familiar with the matter, and has openly called his current press team “incompetent.”

    (b) the WH & GOP now have a “chance to pivot” and “get their agenda” through congress;

    ….. this will last just until the next twitler’s outrageous tweet or breaking story about corrupt actions by someone from Team Treason;

    some people never learn not to hype an corrupt scumbag who has no decent bone in his body

  85. May 18, 2017 at 7:51 am

    I keep seeing reminders that 45 can fire Mueller just has he did Comey, Yates, Baharara… Some make it seem as if he can do it directly. Others indicate that it would have to come through the Deputy Attorney General.

    [If the latter, it would be unlikely that Rosenstein would follow through, which means that 45 would have to fire Rosenstein and replace him with someone who is “loyal” and will carry out his orders.]

    Does anyone know which it is?

    • 159 globalcitizenlinda
      May 18, 2017 at 8:10 am

      Please see Rachel Maddow’s show from yesterday. She had on the shown the gentleman who wrote the statute. What I understand is that the Deputy AG would need to sign off or be fired by the homegrown demagogue. I could be wrong

      • May 18, 2017 at 8:21 am

        Yeah, I think that’s where I saw that detail about the DAG needing to sign off. And actually it makes more sense to me.

        The direct firing is coming from the so-called experts.

  86. May 18, 2017 at 8:04 am

    Another dose of reality is that while we are being distracted (with good reason) by TrumpRussia, the GOP is moving forward with their agenda — AHCA, Tax Reform, etc. I’ve seen others give this warning through tweets, but Sen. Chris Murphy highlighted that warning this morning.

    We don’t want to be caught flat-footed when the Senate tries to rush through a “new” healthcare bill, or tax reform bill or something else just as detrimental to the poor, working class, women, and immigrants.

    Multi-tasking is a skill that we desperately need to employ right now. Stay vigilant!!!

      Michael Flynn and other advisers to Donald Trump’s campaign were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race, current and former U.S. officials familiar with the exchanges told Reuters.

      Conversations between Flynn and Kislyak accelerated after the Nov. 8 vote as the two discussed establishing a back channel for communication between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that could bypass the U.S. national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations, four current U.S. officials said.

      In January, the Trump White House initially denied any contacts with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign. The White House and advisers to the campaign have since confirmed four meetings between Kislyak and Trump advisers during that time.

What a poor excuse for a human being he is … and I’m thinking, after his padded-cell prison time, 45 will “go the way” of Roger Ailes. They’ve announced Ailes had been living somewhere near Palm Beach without friends – or anything much to exploit (although exploit wasn’t exactly the word used).

    I read one tweet last night that said Mueller was being given civil service protections, and could not be fired by Dolt45. I wasn’t thrilled with Rosenstein’s characterization of “a level of independence.” And it took more outrageous acts of DT to push him to name a special counsel. Is there any doubt there is ample evidence already compiled that would have led to a special counsel? I’m still not ready to trust Rosenstein. There’s a reason he’s still at DOJ and Sally Yates and Preet (?) is not.

    • 211 0388jojothecat
      May 18, 2017 at 11:54 am

      On RM Show I forget who she was interviewing but said that Cheeto-Beneto can’t fire him but he can fire Rosenstein. The report that Mueller presents to DOJ is private and will only go to the Rosenstein or his replacement. If Orange face does fire Rosenstein it will surely be seen as hiding something. Can’t help him no matter what he does.
