“Now is the time for all good people to come to the aide of their country.”
I walked through our neighborhood today and saw so many flags flying today. I cried. Our flag deserves better than what is happening in our country today. Too many Americans looking the other way. Our flag deserves better.

It does! And it’s frightening. I’ve even been thinking that after the Constitutional Convention, when a woman asked Ben Franklin whether we had “a republic or a monarchy,” he answered, “A republic, if you can keep it.” Can we?

Love Pope Francis and his “wild ways” in the 21st Century! So glad I lived to see BOTH Pope Francis and President Barack Obama show us how “the world” could look, if we cherish each inhabitant of it and pause long enough to remember “the last shall [and can actually] be first.”

Yes but the destruction to our country from four years of Trump will be hard to overcome. We can resist but acknowledge how much Trump has already harmed this country. He has no respect for the Constitution or legal restraints on his presidency — and neither do those he has surrounded himself with.

          Dear J’oboomer,
I remember saying something similar to my grandfather back in the 70’s when the economy, etc, was pretty crazy. He was born in 1881, so he had quite a perspective on things. He said he had lived through the Spanish American War, both World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam, through the Great Depression and numerous recessions and other fiascos of our country, and of one thing he was certain. America always comes back. Always!

He live until he was 97 with more intelligence and clarity and wisdom until the day he died, than many of the people I know today. I hold on dearly to much of what he passed on to me.

Sounds like a beautiful, wise man! My grandfather – whom I adored when I was little and miss to this day – was born in 1885 but passed away when I was 10. I missed much of his spoken wisdom as I grew up, but the sum total of the man he was is still in my heart.

I was walking past my sister’s den yesterday when the sound of Ennio Morricone’s sublime theme from The Mission stopped me in my tracks. It’s one of, if not the most beautiful movie themes EVER, in my very humble opinion. Anyway, it turned out to be a wonderful Cadillac that I missed, because I didn’t watch this years Oscars. I must say it got me a little misty-eyed…

Here’s Maestro Morricone conducting this masterpiece with full orchestra and chorus. [Yes, I’ve posted it here before.]
Just close your eyes and you will hear what heaven must sound like.

This isn’t a surprise, Moon Jae-in ran on a platform against US THAAD missile defense.

South Koreans voted for him this month because he wants to re-unify Korea — and what a blessing *that* would be, 60+ years after US involvement in Korean War, establishing the DMZ (IMHO).

And for him, it is all personal. I never forget what Sir Richard Branson said about him and his penchant for vengefulness. For him to watch the adoring crowd at PBO’s events and the protests that met him in Europe is cutting. He is a mad man with a desire to be liked so badly. And there was PBO being accepted glowingly by the Europeans, and he scoffed at. He’s crazy. Bat shit crazy.

    Hello TODers

    (((((((((((((((((CHIPS))))))))))))))

Thanks so much Nerdy for continuing to keep this place open.

Some days the only place to come and get some sanity. It seems the mad man has cast an ugly cloud over the world. Every single day there is some nefarious act coming out of 1600 PA Ave. I have never been able to refer to that place like I have done since I came here. Of course can and will never refer to him as president. Never ever listen to him speak in my house on my TV or any video anywhere. Pictures I see of him are always dour and sour. He is a miserable piece of kaka and in his misery wants everyone else to feel the same way. I am fighting that everyday, trying not to be down, and Lord knows it has been hard.

He has done so much to take this country back domestically and globally. And his collaborators, the GOP are just as complicit. The ugly climate of violence on innocent people can be laid at their feet collectively. Thank heavens for the few journalists that continue to press against all of this craziness and are not given to normalizing any of it.

    Have a good day everyone.

    SCOTUS decided these cases today:

    Breaking News :
    SCOTUS today held as follows:
    The Fourth Amendment does not support the 9th Circuit’s provocation rule (opinion here);
    The Federal Employers’ Liability Act does not allow jurisdiction over out-of-state corporations (opinion here);
    In statutory rape cases, federal definition of sexual abuse of minor means that victim must be under 16 years old (opinion here);
Sales in the United States and abroad extinguish sellers’ rights under Patent Act (opinion here).
This morning court also agreed to decide whether Ohio’s process for removing voters from registration lists violates federal voting laws (case page here).
The court called for the views of the acting solicitor general today in patent case about lost profits arising from prohibited combinations occurring outside of the United States (case page here).
Once again the court did not act on a major gun-rights case from California or on a First Amendment challenge by a Colorado baker who objects to creating cakes for same-sex weddings.
    The order list is here.

Hi DF. It is worrisome, indeed.

This is what dictators do, in this case a wannabe dictator. When their backs are pushed against the wall, and feel like they stand to lose power, the act with impunity. In smaller countries like mine, where there were no check and balances or freedom of the press, you can imagine the human toll. Here, what I am terrified of is not just Birther himself, but the people like McMasters, Mattis, etc., that were billed as serious folks, seem to just rubber stamp his foolishness. This is the danger I fear. But one good thing is that, a large number in the press is proving to make loud noises and outing some of what he is doing and would otherwise get away with. But most importantly, the onus I think is now on We. The. People. But surely if he feels wounded, Birther is likely to do anything. I personally think he mentally impaired so some degree.

Morning, africa….I agree with you. I do believe that there are some real patriots working overtime to connect the dots on this fraudulent POS….they will out him when they can do so with all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted…and they will cast a WIDE net, because this sewer is wide and deep!
I keep thinking about what PBO said….about our civic duties of paying attention to our democracy and tending to those issues that are important to us as we move forward as a nation….Not to take anything for granted. As we can see, things can change quickly…and we might not like what happens, like most of us don’t now. The most important thing is to stay vigilant and work together to move the country in the direction it needs to go. Register people to vote. Talk. Listen. Put the anxiety to good use doing positive things….and remember, he said :

“But what we’ve also tried to teach them is resilience, and tried to teach them hope, and that the only thing that is the end of the world is the end of the world,” Obama said.

We HAD to learn this painful lesson. I really believe this. We were getting complacent. No more. I think eyes are open. This is hard, short term pain for long term gain….at least I hope so:) Keep the faith:)

        • May 30, 2017 at 11:21 am

Yes, I do take heart that over and again information fed to the media is coming from within, whether it is the place there on 1600 or the intelligence offices, and it is with great risk that the do it. So yes, I am thankful. As well, everything you said about PBO. When I get to the point sometimes I don’t want to hear another word about this mad man, I hear PBO in my head. And it is a good reminder. I am constantly reminded of his words that we not take what we have for granted.

This is why I come here, most days just lurking, of late. But it is refreshing. I believe we can survive this, but we have to fight like never before. It’s why when I am on Twitter, I constantly give thanks to the ones like Joy Reid and others that are relentless in this fight. :):)

    friggin’ scientists.

US scientists have re-engineered a vital antibiotic in a bid to wipe out one of the world’s most threatening superbugs.

Their new version of vancomycin is designed to be ultra-tough and appears to be a thousand times more potent than the old drug, PNAS journal reports.

It fights bacteria in three different ways, making it much less likely that the bugs can dodge the attack.

It is yet to be tested in animals and people, however.

The Scripps Research Institute team hope the drug will be ready for use within five years if it passes more tests.

      His reply to Senate investigators:

Cohen confirmed to ABC News that House and Senate investigators have asked him “to provide information and testimony” about any contacts he had with people connected to the Russian government, but he said he has turned down the invitation.

“I declined the invitation to participate as the request was poorly phrased, overly broad and not capable of being answered,” Cohen told ABC News in an email Tuesday.

After Cohen rejected the Congressional requests for cooperation, the Senate Select Intelligence Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to grant the chairman, Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina, and ranking Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, blanket authority to issue subpoenas as they deem necessary.

      Oh yeah. That’ll work. Dipshit.

Check your Twitter account; people are reporting that they are now listed as following DT even though they had not done this or that they had blocked him. We know that he suddenly has 5 million followers in 3 days (mostly bots) so some shit is about to go down.

    Because OF COURSE!

    http://www.latimes.com/business/lazarus/la-fi-lazarus-choice-act-payday-loans-20170530-story.html

Yoou have to wade all the way to Page 403 of the 589-page Financial Choice Act to find a one-sentence provision that obliterates current efforts to bring fairness and responsibility to payday lenders and similar merchants of never-ending debt.

Section 733 of the bill, which could come up for a vote by the full House of Representatives as soon as this week, declares that federal authorities “may not exercise any rulemaking, enforcement or other authority with respect to payday loans, vehicle title loans or other similar loans.”

With that one line, Republican lawmakers have declared their willingness to allow people facing financial difficulties to be at the mercy of predatory lending practices that typically involve annual interest rates approaching 400%.

“They’re trying to sneak in that provision,” Diane Standaert, executive vice president of the Center for Responsible Lending, told me. “It seems like they hoped no one would notice.”

She called the provision “a free pass for payday and title lenders to not be subject to efforts to rein in their abusive practices.”

Payday loans are intended to serve as short-term fixes for financial troubles. In practice, however, borrowers frequently are unable to repay the original loan and become trapped in ongoing cycles of debt.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has found that over 19 million U.S. households resort to payday loans. Of that number, almost 70% of borrowers have to take out a second loan to cover the first, and 20% end up saddled with 10 or more loans, one after the other.

After the first SNL skit, Spicer should have resigned.

I remember Dr. Maddow’s segment where she corrected his pronunciation of names, common words, and pointed out many embarrassing responses Spicer gave… with a straight face.

Why does he stay? If that’s true, he can’t be enjoying the job.
