    There has never been a President in our lifetime as inspirational as President Obama. Now more than ever we need to follow his inspiration and be the change we seek.

    Yesterday, I put out a small explainer of some of Ohio’s biggest cities and how their local politics influences the final results of elections in Ohio;

    but that was before extreme right’s protests in Charlottesville resulted into the tragic events of murder and injuries to many people;

    the I heard the reports that the perpetuator of the racially-based vehicular homicide was a white supremacist form Maumee in Ohio.

    here is an extra bit of clarification for those who are not very familiar with Ohio. Maumee Ohio is in Lucas County and the county city for that is Toledo Ohio.

    The community in question is in the northwestern tip of Ohio closest to Michigan.

    People with familiarity of this area are aware of the heavy influence of the white supremacist and armed-to-the-teeth militia that operates across these two borders.

    The Michigan militia collaborates with the Ohio militia.

    Often these OH and MI militia work with the Indiana militia (which Ms. Sue has been warning us about for many years here on TOD.

    some reports have suggested that there is cross-recruitment between these groups and some department of law enforcement, veterans groups and local elected leaders.

    locally, these close relationship makes it very hard to monitor or charge these people with crimes committed because they are often protected using administrative machine, laws, and powerful people

    So when people say ‘this is not who we are”, they are either uninformed or are just blatantly lying.

    if there is ever a chance to make the necessary changes, then ordinary people have to accept these connections, investigators and organizations need to have then repeatedly exposed, and then put under the scrutiny of laws and charged when they commit crimes;

    those times me and my friends have driven through this area, we go through noting the confederate flags flying on the different porches, we try to stick to strict traffic laws but we are routinely stopped by the police.

    a few examples:

    one time, cops car flashing behind us and once he tells us that he stopped us because people in other cars called in “suspicious people driving through town”;

    another time, the cop asked for the identification of the driver and whether that car was really hers. once he called in and matched everything, then he proceeded to ask everyone in the car for their identification. we pointed out to him that he should not be doing that and his response was well, I don’t know how the cops in Columbus treat you but here you will have to give me your identifications.

    so, if we can, we try to make sure that we don’t drive through those towns beyond a certain time of the afternoon …. this is Ohio, 2017 … so this IS. WHO. WE ARE;

      This is simply astounding, Linda.

      Thank you for letting us know — I had no idea of the extent of government-sanctioned racism along the Michigan-Ohio border.

      So, so wrong, and I’m so sorry that you and many others are subjected to this outrageous treatment. 😦

    • August 14, 2017 at 8:58 am

      OMG, thank you for sharing this information. I’m completely unfamiliar with that region and am sickened by the treatment you were shown. I have no doubt there are hundreds of thousands of areas just like that scattered around this nation. Still, it’s a shock to the system in what is supposed to be America. It also makes me appreciate PBO that much more.

    Re Counter Protesters:..What would happened if no one showed up…to counter the nazi protests…or if the counter protest was in another location…it seems to me that nazis are hell bent on violence…i would not be fodder for them…

    • 18 CEB
      August 13, 2017 at 5:48 pm

      Some people, especially those who live in Southern cities, may feel that to be silent is to be complicit. They want to show the world that not all of the people (especially the white ones) in the area believe as the hate group does. It is time out for staying home and hiding behind Facebook and Twitter; resistance can be dangerous, but it is necessary in all of its non-violent forms. I have been fighting with feelings of racial hatred since that awful election night even though several family members are white. When I see white people standing with for equality, justice and morality, taking on congress people in town halls, marching, and taking this foul govt. to court to stop their depredations on the social contract, it helps me to remember not to hate, that there are good people who do not look like me who are taking on the present evil and that our fight can be won.

      • August 13, 2017 at 6:02 pm

        i understand the need to stand up and speak out….but these nazi protesters are not your average protesters…their goal is to do harm and impose fear in a community….just showing up to counter them is ineffective….and now watching the counter protester in Seattle challenge the police seems unproductive to me…how is that action achieving their goal…what is their goal…they seem to want to be where the nazis are…..the police are blocking them…keeping the two groups separate…what the Charlottesville police should have done…the counter protesters alarm me as well…what do they want

    • 20 57andfemale
      August 14, 2017 at 10:59 am

      If counter protestors didn’t show up, the meme would be that “America supports” supremacist ideology. That the left is too disorganized, apathetic, not “excited”.

      We were afraid to protest in the 60’s too but we did it anyway. If we don’t show up, we cede the narrative to the psychopaths.

      • August 14, 2017 at 12:35 pm

        it is not about being afraid to protest…but to counter protest in the same spot as nazis…and the like is not a great idea…it begs a violent confrontation…i am not into direct confrontation in which the violence becomes the message…what indeed is the purpose of counter demonstrations…of the kind we saw this weekend….however…perhaps it was the violent confrontation that caused folks to take notice…media……GOP….world leaders..and others….otherwise maybe they would not have paid attention….but was it the firelight vigil of the klansmen so reminiscent of the days of the night riders…that brought the attention…was it the fact that the police just stood by and watched….was it the gun toting militia men that brought attention…was it the images of violence against the clergy…of the car plowing into a crowd of people…or perhaps it was the death of a young woman…..maybe it was all of it….so my question becomes …NOW What do we do! Where do we go from here…i must say that i am not always sure how we should proceed…i know that we need short term as well as long term goals..and then there is the “Urgency of Now”..let me end…i’m rambling now…alot of emotion racing thru me…hugs 57

    When there is an injustice happening, each person will choose how they think they should react and which side they will be on.

    …….. some will run for office;

    …….. some will try to change/defend laws and provide legal representation to others;

    ….. some will speak out in pulpit or spread the message of change in different places of worship or other forums;

    …… some will look for votes at the grassroots;

    …….. some will donate money discreetly or publicly;

    …….. some will choose to teach subject areas or organizing tactics or resistance tactics;

    ….. some will make meals and donate food;

    …….. some will take to the streets and protest will their bodies;

    … some write articles in media, engage social media, and or make petitions;

    ….. some will create protest songs, dances, poems, plays, films or some other form of artistic expressions;

    ….. some will engage in boycotts;

    ….. some will show their protest on in games or other forms of athletic activity;

    …… some will choose to be arrested;

    ….. so many ways to make your voices hear or push for positive change;

    => to me the key question is will you stand up and be counted or will pretend nothing is wrong and go about your ways or endorse the status quo because it favors you;

    Whenever I am not certain what to do in a situation, these are some of the quotes that comes to my mind:

    “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    A little humor I think some of you will enjoy….

    Needed a little distraction from the Charlottesville situation, so I decided to watch Friday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, with guest Senator Al Franken.

    In the opening monologue Colbert was talking about the reason for DT’s vacation being that they needed to replace the heating and cooling systems in the White House. Colbert stated it was about time because somehow the previous president was somehow hotter and cooler at the same time!! 😁

    First, Happy Birthday dear ((((((((((((CHIPS))))))))))). Hope your day has been blessed and peace-filled. We miss you and love you.

    Second, I just finally caught up. Went to our Stop Hate Rally in downtown Knoxville. Arranged in less than 24 hours. At least a 1000 people on a Sunday afternoon. Good speakers and lots of uplifting and encouragement to push forward and “Be the Change.” This followed church this morning. Before our pastor began his sermon he said he was going to address the Charlottesville event. Can’t remember everything he said–it was all good–early in his comments he said it’s not enough to post of Facebook or Twitter. We need to ACT. Moved into STRONGLY denouncing racism in all forms and in every way. Ended with this. “So i’m here to tell you on this Sunday, August 13, 2017 if you can’t agree with what I just said, you need to find a new church. I know a lot of pastors in this town and I will be glad to introduce you to any of them.” There was immediate applause and some shouts. Then he said, “And now time for the sermon……and laughed.” 🙂

    I’m glad ministers are speaking up. Our wonderful associate minister today spoke up forcefully. She also acts. The scripture was about Jesus telling his disciples to get in the boat and go to the other side of the lake, after feeding the 5,000. He went to get alone. When he came down the mountain, there was a storm brewing, and he called to them, then started walking on the water toward them. We know what comes next. Peter stepped out of the boat and walked, but couldn’t stay on the water. The interpretation we’ve gotten for years was that Peter fell because he looked down and didn’t have faith. Our minister said what matters was that Peter got out of the boat going towards Jesus. She talked about how the church has failed the country the last 70 years in matters of justice. And concluded with “Church: get out of the boat.” She got hearty amens and approvals in a denomination that is not known for emotional responses. So…at least one in Tennessee, at least one in Oklahoma…..this could spread. The church does need to get out of the boat! Anyone who supports white supremacy has long ago left our church…..they would be way too uncomfortable.

    I can’t but remember all those times when the media, the pundits and every last GOP congress member demanded that President Obama be the comforter in chief. He traveled to memorial services, he met with heartbroken relatives – he said the names of those lost over and over.

    This is what the president* of today says

    “Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!”

    He doesn’t even know the name of the young women who died. He has no idea how many were injured, what they have suffered – and the media, the pundits, the GOP – say “He won’t change, next”

    After Charlottesville: End the Denial About Trump
    E.J. Dionne Jr.

    It should not have taken the death and injury of innocents to move our nation toward moral clarity. It should not have taken President Trump’s disgraceful refusal to condemn white supremacy, bigotry and Nazism to make clear to all who he is and which dark impulses he is willing to exploit to maintain his hold on power.

    Those of us who are white regularly insist that the racists and bigots are a minority of us and that the white-power movement is a marginal and demented faction.

    This is true, and the mayhem in Charlottesville, Virginia, called forth passionate condemnations of blood-and-soil nationalism across the spectrum of ideology. These forms of witness were a necessary defense of the American idea and underscored the shamefulness of Trump’s embrace of moral equivalence. There are not, as Trump insisted Saturday, “many sides” to questions that were settled long ago: Racism, anti-Semitism, discrimination and white supremacy are unequivocally wrong.

    A president who cannot bring himself to say this immediately and unequivocally squanders any claim to moral leadership.

    The battles over Confederate monuments, in Charlottesville and elsewhere, reflect our difficulty in acknowledging that these memorials are less historical markers than political statements. Many were erected explicitly in support of Jim Crow and implicitly to deny the truth that the Southern cause in the Civil War was built around a defense of slavery. Taking them down is an acknowledgement of what history teaches, not an eradication of the past.

    But history is also being made now. As is always true with Trump, self-interest is the most efficient explanation for his actions: Under pressure from the Russia investigation, he is reluctant to alienate backlash voters, who are among his most loyal supporters.

    The rest of us, however, have a larger obligation to our country and to racial justice. As the late civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer might suggest, it is time to ask about Trump: When will we become sick and tired of being sick and tired?

    EXCLUSIVE: Trump HHS Severs Key Partnerships For Obamacare Outreach
    Published AUGUST 14, 2017 6:00 AM

    A wide array of groups that partnered for several years with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House to promote open enrollment under the Affordable Care Act say this year has brought a deafening silence from the Trump administration, with no sign the partnerships will continue.

    Both representatives of the former partner groups and former HHS officials say the relationships with gig economy companies, youth organizations, churches, women’s groups, and African American and Latino civil rights non-profits were critical to keeping Obamacare’s markets functioning, and their termination is a clear example of sabotage.

    Trump Ignores Charlottesville In Early-Morning Tweets
    Published AUGUST 14, 2017 7:49 AM

    In a series of tweets early Monday morning, President Donald Trump signaled that he would like to move past the weekend attack in Charlottesville and his response to the violence, by mentioning issues like trade and the Alabama special election in a series of tweets instead of addressing the violence in Charlottesville.

    In his initial statement on the attack at a white nationalist rally and counter-protest, Trump did not explicitly condemn white nationalists, instead denouncing “this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides.” He has yet to personally clarify his remarks or offer any additional condemnations.

    But Monday morning, he explicitly went after Democrats in Congress.

    The Obstructionist Democrats have given us (or not fixed) some of the worst trade deals in World History. I am changing that fast!
