I was 13 years old when this song came out and it was a huge game changer for how Black people, especially the young ones saw themselves. Prior to this, even among A-A’s, black had a negative connotation to the extent that it was considered an insult to be called such. The natural or the ‘fro, was revolutionary, especially for Black women. I rocked it a few times back in the day, but mostly wore my hair long and straight until I hit my late 30’s. I finally went for the “big chop” and a full on natural 22 years ago and I have never felt more free, more myself, and more authentic. Think I will go over to ITunes and download a copy of this song..

Growing up, my “big” cousins played this song at every cookout/bbq/ family house party with their big fros and bell bottom jeans and platform shoes and I was just in awe and loved and looked up to them so much…. and in addition to JB, this was the other “anthem” played in our house and gramma’s house growing up….Forever left its mark to this day..

      • February 7, 2018 at 10:15 am

yassss…it can not be understated what this song meant….to stand up tall…wearing an AFRO (kinky ..curly) hair….and to say those words…I’m BLACK and I’m Proud….was Liberating….there was a time that to be called Black was considered an insult….(i’m not black..i’m brown)..We often talk about the messaging of the GOP…well the massaging of racism…white supremacy…and white privilege…took its toll on us…still does….I’m Black and I’m Proud!!!!!!

Oklahoma is a disaster because of rightwing policies. This is what Republicans want to do to the entire country.

    • February 6, 2018 at 1:58 pm

From the article….Is this destined to happen to us because of the GOP tax cut?

The roots of the fiasco are not hard to determine. As in Oklahoma’s northern neighbor, Kansas, deep tax cuts have wrecked the state’s finances. During the shale boom, lawmakers gave a sweetheart deal to its oilmen, costing $470m in a single year, by slashing the gross production tax on horizontal drilling from 7% to 1%. North Dakota, by contrast, taxes production at 11.5%. The crash in global oil prices in 2014 did not help state coffers either. Oklahoma has also cut income taxes, first under Democrats desperate to maintain control over a state that was trending Republican, and then under Republicans, who swept to power anyway. Mary Fallin, the Republican governor, came to office pledging to eliminate the income tax altogether. Since 2008 general state funds for K-12 education in Oklahoma have been slashed by 28.2%—the biggest cut in the country. Property taxes, which might have made up the difference, are constitutionally limited.

Republican politics are a disaster for regular folks. The only people who will do well are those who are independently wealthy and can thus afford to send their kids to private schools and pay for expensive healthcare. The rest of us would be screwed.

Remember Republicans like Sarah Palin accusing Democrats of creating “death panels” via the ACA? Well, looks like it is Republicans who are implementing real death panels.

We are only days away from this. The deplorable orange one would defy the order and the GOP congress will say nothing and neither will any law enforcement departments. This one cares nothing for the rule of law, ethics, or decency in any shape or form. When we finally do get rid of him and his ilk, we will have to make many things a law with specific consequences spelled out. We can no longer depend on any elected official to do the right thing or what is expected.

      February 6, 2018 at 7:23 pm

That would be a constitutional crisis but what would happen next? I don’t see this Congress doing anything about it. Our only hope would be Congress flipping with enough Democrats and Republicans in the Senate impeaching Trump early next year.

Great news on the win by Democrat(s) in Missouri. Keeping fingers crossed for the 2nd win to come through.

Someone needs to follow the money, cause somebody’s GETTING PAID!!

The Department of State is mandating enormous fee increases to a new accrediting entity beginning February 15, 2018 for agencies working internationally.

The newly-appointed accrediting entity does not have contracts, policies, or procedures, and has provided those agencies with no services. The costs of international adoptions for each family will increase by thousands of dollars beginning almost immediately. The DOS is charging an additional $500 per international adoption pursuit, even if the adoption is unsuccessful. Agency monitoring fees stand to increase by approximately 4,000% – an outrageous amount that does not include accreditation expenses or account for the additional staffing that will be required to meet their added demands.

After Comey was fired Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed the rank and file of the FBI had lost confidence in him. Now texts show it was just another lie from the White House as the entire FBI was devastated and Comey was beloved by all. https://t.co/EfsPI1XNim
