thanks a lot to the Forever First Lady for reminding all of that we get to the finally tally by casting one vote at time – so we all need to vote to make a difference

The Obamas protecting the future by training and empowering young leaders all over the world, GOTVing here and working with Eric Holderand others on combating gerrymandering. They know that a foundation has to be built and the most powerful tool that citizens have must be protected and expanded to secure a country, world and future that is more just, equal and progressive. They know how best to use their talents and abilities and ignore all of the stupid shouting from lazy liberals and so-called progressives who are doing little or nothing themselves to deal with the current disasters. Each individual citizen has a responsibility to fight in ways that they can find to change the tide. It never was a one person job and PBO told us this from the very beginning.

In the early days after the election, PBO said the thing that troubled him the most was the low turnout; 46% of registered voters did not cast votes in the 2016 mis-election.

Yep each candidate got approximately 25% of the vote. It is disgraceful that people care so little about their country, even the ones who did vote don’t care a foreign country put their guy in office now they want to be paid by destroying America and they don’t care as long as THEIR GUY won.

I read that neither senator from his state supported him. Unfortunately, he will only be replaced with another deplorable. 42 or so circuit judges have already been rammed through. It will take us decades to reverse the damage that this deplorable govt. aided by the Heritage Foundation, the corporate oligarchy, the rabid hateful evangelists and Putin have wrought.

The 26th amendment that gave 18 year olds the right to vote was ratified in 1971. I turned 18 the following year and the first thing that I did was get on a bus, a copy of my birth certificate secured in my purse and went downtown to the courthouse to register to vote. No one had to tell me about it, beg me, or make things convenient for me. I wanted to have a voice, to be a full citizen, and to be the embodiment of those who had not lived to have this privilege; in gratitude for those who had fought and died so that I, a young Black woman living in the South, could do such a precious thing. I come from a family of voters and helped in voter registrations even before I could do so. I live in a state where we are still fighting so that former felons can have all of their civil rights restored (voting) which will be on the ballot this November. I have no respect for people who do not vote. There is no excuse in any way shape or form for this failure, especially among the privileged. While I am pleased that there is full out effort to register new voters and to encourage them, especially the 18-30 year olds to actually do it, it makes me sad that that so many of us are immature, ignorant, selfish and unconcerned. That we had to be on the brink of ruination before people started to wake up.

I had just turned 18 yrs old in September and had just settled into college living. I was at the mall one night and outside the mall was someone signing people up to register to vote. They asked if I was registered and I said no, they pulled out a registration form for me to complete. I didn’t have to show my id, SS#, (didn’t drive then) or driver’s license. It was mailed to the Registrars office. I got a letter in November 1974 from my local representative (I still have it until I die) thanking me for exercising my right as a citizen and a young voter. They got my information off the application and verified it.

My mom stopped voting right after John Kennedy was killed. She was ready to start voting again then Bobby got killed, never voted until I moved back home in 1977 and I updated my voting registration with my new address. Our voting place was across the street at the elementary school. She registered to vote against Prop 13. All the other stupid neighbors voted for it because they believed the lies that rent would go down. Rent shot up and then L.A. voted for rent control. I saw then that people will believe anything without researching it themselves.

I also didn’t vote because of the JFK assassination, and all the other assassinations of the Sixties, and because of the Vietnam War. My generation who lived through those still hurt inside because of them, although many understood the importance of voting more than I did, while I used my non-vote as a protest. What was I thinking? But I own up to it, as my choice back then.

Even though I’d race home from high school to watch JFK’s press conferences on TV and was totally interested in our government because of him, I pretty much gave up politics – except to randomly express disgust and blatant anger at Reagan and GHW Bush, not as helpful as actually VOTING – until I voted for Bill Clinton. Have voted in every election since, and will never make that mistake again.

Of course, after standing up for Bill Clinton during his presidency, I felt that blatant anger again when he made those remarks about Jesse Jackson, and thus candidate Barack Obama, in South Carolina during the first successful President Obama campaign, and have yet to forgive him. That made me see what empowerment really looked like – that we don’t have to make the same mistake over and over, but we do have to vote. I voted for Barack Obama twice and since my Bill Clinton vote in the 1990s, I’ve voted in all mid-terms, and I will always vote, every election, going forward. If we’re lucky enough to have been born in a democracy, we must do our parts or lose it. Even ol’ Benjamin Franklin knew that.

The first president I voted for was Jimmy Carter. I saw how the media did a hacket job on him right after he was elected. I saw the media wanted Raygun elected president over Carter. I voted for Carter but to this day people don’t appreciate what he did for this country. The media called him weak, it was also the rise of “talk radio” but there were more liberal voices on the air. I saw the rise of Rush Limpballs and how he told people he was in it for the money, he did not believe what he was saying. All of a sudden with GWHB he started believing his B.S.

Yes, I remember it all. Unfortunately, today’s situation is worse, but we’ve had some rough times during these last many decades. And I appreciated Jimmy Carter! I remember watching the convention that year when he stood before the Democrats, big smile, southern drawl, and said, “My name is Jimmy Carter, and I’m runnin’ for president!”

I found the video and it still makes me smile – check out @ 5:22 here:

I was 13 during that awful year of the assassinations of MLK and RFK. All vestiges of childhood innocence ended that year, but my answer was to become an activist (environmental and suffrage/civil rights mostly). We fought to have Black studies/history in our high schools and colleges, did teach-ins, clean ups, voter registration, protest walks of 20-25 miles and other activities. It was a heady time to be “young, gifted and Black,” but it was also the first time that I spent time among white students and adults (Teaching staff was integrated in 1970 and student bodies, partially integrated the 71-72 school year). By the time I got to college, I was either the only Black student in my classes or among only a few. Most of my professors were young hippies who lived with a type of freedom that was so foreign to me. I often felt like an anthropologist trying to learn the social cues and ways of being from an alien group. I threw myself into almost everything, except drugs and so-called free love because I had goals and was very aware of the “black tax.” I bore the burden of creating a legacy for others to follow and for tearing down the harmful stereotypes that so many whites had about Black people. I was part of that large generation of first time college students and I could not afford to waste the opportunities that I had been given. I did well in college, easily gained the respect of my teachers and fellow students and had a good time there, but I always knew that I was carrying the hopes and dreams of generations.

Just getting back here to read this, CEB. This is such a beautiful recollection of how you “came of age,” and then some. I’m so happy you shared this story – my 15-year-old granddaughter is surprise-visiting me this week, she’s somewhat politically engaged, and we’ve been talking about her college years and future, and I intend to share this with her. She has three little bi-racial half-sisters and she wants to be a role model for them, too.

And good for you for all you accomplished, and for the totally mature way you handled your life and the dreams you had and those of, perhaps, others! ❤

Just got back to the site. Thanks for you kind remarks JO. Have a great time with your granddaughter. My female high school students were always light years away from the boys when it came to having real plans for their lives. They were very aware that the future is female and were preparing to be a force in that future.

Your granddaughter is very lucky to have you as a sounding board and guide.

In addition to reaching those with voter apathy, I would like to see an effort to reach those in the inner cities of LA, Baltimore, Ferguson, etc., when generation after generation is living off of the government handout, gripping about the pitiful handout, not doing anything to improve their lot in life.
These are the ones we really need to focus on and to find a way to get through to them the benefit of voting, the power in voting.

I have seen them and heard their bitching, while they wait on that government check and food stamps.

It’s one thing to be on hard times, but it’s another when it’s your life career.

FACT: Russian Asset Trump was informed in 2016 by all of our intelligence agencies that Russia’s interference in the election was REAL.

Lawrence just read a news item on his show saying an unnamed “WH official” said DNI Coats “has gone rogue” and appeared to be mocking the non-president in Aspen earlier today, trump’s mad, blah blah blah.

    Ball’s in your court, Coats!

Kemp is the jackass that trump endorsed…because OF COURSE HE IS! Please share this widely…especially if you have voting family/friends in Georgia.

I am old enough to remember Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon telling lies on TV, about Vietnam in both cases, and Watergate for Nixon. I remember the travails and deceptions of Bill Clinton, and of George W. Bush in the buildup to the disastrous Iraq War.

But never before have I seen an American president consistently, repeatedly, publicly, and shockingly advance the interests of another country over those of his own government and people.

Trump manifestly cannot help himself. This is who he is.

Those who could do something are the 51 Republican senators and 236 Republican representatives who have the power to hold hearings, issue subpoenas, pass resolutions of censure, guarantee the integrity of Robert Mueller’s investigation, condemn the past Russian election interference, shore up protections against the next assault, and in general defend their country rather than the damaged and defective man who is now its president.

James Fallows is a very respected individual. Wish there were some “master list” being kept somewhere in the country (Ha Ha) with the names of all those who’ve “come out” against trump. Then we’d know who all will be “getting into Heaven,” and I’m only half kidding.

Hey, I’m tired and a little giddy right now!

My thought, if was was worried about this, then he should never have run for president…whether he thought he would win, or not, is not material to this matter.

It’s all so unreal, but looks like it’s been happening all around us for decades … all this “sistema” stuff, apparently relating to trump … while some people in the country watched The Apprentice and thought it was cool.

I never watched the Apprentice because I thought Trump was as ugly as homemade sin. The pasty skin, the very thin lips and a mouth too small for his teeth. The doughy body, the weak chin, and the hideous yellow hair.

I think (as far back as I can remember) I watched it during the first season, but not my cup of tea. And your description of him was spot on, although now I think I have to wait a little bit before eating breakfast. 🙂

Yeh this is Ledeneva’s version. Good luck with that. Normalizing or watering down Trump’s involvement with Russia and the treason he is now SERIALLY committing as US President will not fly.

Yes, I notice how some people are trying to use the “he’s new at this” or “he didn’t know” defense to minimize his offenses.

But he’s an asshole through and through, and too much of his behavior tracks with using the power of the presidency to act on his vindictive pettiness.

His ego just HAD to avenge the WHCD roasting by President Obama at all costs.

It’s always been my hope that he regret ever running for president and having all his scummy dealings under a global microscope. I hope that’s at least starting to happen, and I hope at least one of his kids goes up the river for all the damage he’s helped inflict on this country.

I guess I keep coming back to- why isn’t it enough that Putin made him President-perhaps for life? That he wanted to become President & Putin made him a deal that he’d give him the Presidency if he did Putin’s bidding. Isn’t that of & in itself sufficient? Does there need to be blackmail/$$/Kompromat to explain all this? I see a guy who is stealing us blind- joyfully- while creating a white utopia for his evangelical/nazi/white supremacists and all he had to do was agree to let Putin be the boss. I see a guy who has zero loyalty except to himself & money so I don’t feel like he needed to be coerced so much as bought. However, I also don’t particularly care why he’s a traitor- just that he is and should be stopped. I’m daily frustrated that he continues to wreck us with zero liability/repercussions. But then there’s the republicans in Congress… who I believe can be explained in much the same way- lifetime power to create the country of their dreams and our nightmares.

Too tired to check if this has already been posted … this is well worth the read. I have full faith that our country will survive, and I mean that resolutely (sounds like a Constitution word, doesn’t it?). Goodnight, TODville, and all the ships at sea!
