Happy New Year everyone. We can all play a part in the change we want to see. Let’s do this.

If you haven’t seen Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse, make sure you correct that error in 2019. It is for adults, kids, teens, everyone.

The animation is superb, the dialogue is witty, sharp, and charming, the movie has emotional heft and depth, the soundtrack is amazing, and Miles Morales is a pure soul.

Thanks for the recommendation, Nerdy. P.S. Thanks for the last 365 days of having an “OPEN” sign on TOD! You are loved!

The cousin that I raised on Sci-fi movies told me about this the day that we went to see Aquaman. Will check it out. Btw, the cousin is in his 40’s and he also raised his daughter on Sci-fi and superhero movies.

I second that! Every frame of Into the Spiderverse would make a super cool poster. It’s funny. It’s sweet. The story is great and so are the characters.
Also, if you get a chancec go see Aquaman, If Beale Street Could Talk and Mary Poppins. You’ll be glad you did!

I saw Welcome to Marwen – Steve Carrell”s performance is compelling and I loved seeing Janelle Monae in it (under-utilized IMO), but the movie fell flat for me. Beautiful visually, but in some ways infuriating, difficult to watch and sometimes even dumb. There dolls in it, but it is definitely not for kids. Don’t take them.

Haven’t seen these yet, but I plan to check these off in the next few days:
On the Basis of Sex (RBG bio)
      Mary Queen of Scots
      The Favourite
BumbleBee (I’m only going to see it because reviews have been surprisingly, crazy good)

New Year’s Eve in the South: the loudest fireworks and gunshots the moment it is dark. Inside, stay away from windows and be ready to hit the floor.

Thank you to Nerdy who kept the village open through these trying times and to all of the contributors. I came to TOD soon after Chips started it and have been here ever since. I do not post as much as others, but I feel very much apart of the community. You have all educated me so much that I am now the go to person in the family for political matters. Some activist friends who live in another city are trying to get me more involved; while I am okay with being behind the scenes dealing with a small group of people that I know well, taking a larger role is way out of my comfort zone. Not sure which direction I will go, but even being in this position is due in part to all of you.

I am trying to manage expectations for the next year, but no matter what happens with the new democratic majority in the House, we are much better off than we were this time in 2016 and 2017. I feel that all of the turmoil will in the end make us and our institutions better.

May all of you have a happy and healthy new year with those that you love most. May God bless and keep all of us.

How do you even approach a Russian oligarch in the first place, where do they hang out at? Why would a Russian oligarch even care about your political life beyond being able to call in a favor or control you?

Still grinning over the fact that Michelle Obama’s book was released in November and became the best selling book by far for 2018 and that she looked even more fabulous doing it in her fearless fashion choices.
Lovely day with temps edging up to the 80’s in my neck of the woods this first day of the new year. Hoping that this year we will see justice ring, rein, and rain.

Good morning and Happy New Year dear TOD friends. My son and family came for New Year’s and we had our Christmas. My present from them consisted of two books! BECOMING and Pete Souza’s beautiful coffee table book of pictures of President Obama’s eight years. I am content. Started reading Becoming last night. It is great. They left for home this morning, but my house feels warmer and alive after their time with me. My daughter and I had Christmas together, then she went to Wisconsin to make a movie, and comes back today. She gave me Elizabeth George’s new book, one of my favorite authors. As far as I am concerned I hit the gift jackpot.
Love to you all. I do feel encouraged about the country, much more so than last year.

    DON…..

what would happen if Federal Workers just did not show up for work…

    • 136 Don
      January 1, 2019 at 12:59 pm

I can only speak from the law enforcement side. I couldn’t imagine anyone on the law enforcement side not coming to work during the shutdown. We are all on the same side, so if your brother or sister shows up to work you will too.

      • 137 Don
        January 1, 2019 at 1:05 pm

We will get all of your pay back that we didn’t get during the shutdown. I’m sure there are some federal workers that live paycheck to paycheck, and I hope that they will be alright during the shutdown. This is another lesson to learn about taking care of your finances.

      • 138 desertflower
        January 1, 2019 at 1:08 pm

I saw where a Federal workers union is suing this administration because you can’t force someone to work for free w/o pay….

        • 139 Don
          January 1, 2019 at 1:18 pm

Yep, AFGE, American Federation of Government Employees. They sued before and won and as damages those employees received double pay.

  73. January 1, 2019 at 12:50 pm

But that doesn’t mean that Democrats should ignore policy issues. On the contrary, the party should spend the next two years figuring out what, exactly, it will try to do if it gains policymaking power in 2021. Which brings me to the big policy slogan of the moment: the so-called Green New Deal. Is this actually a good idea?

Yes, it is. But it’s important to go beyond the appealing slogan, and hash out many of the details. You don’t want to be like the Republicans, who spent years talking big about repealing Obamacare, but never worked out a realistic alternative.

The great irony is that the U.S. itself drafted much of the original text under the Obama administration, aiming to ensure that Washington, not Beijing, writes the rules of global trade and commerce in the 21st century.

    • 146 Don
      January 1, 2019 at 3:32 pm

Of all the things that really got me upset was the TPP, we could have wrote the rules going forward. But no, a bunch of republicans and Democrats, specifically Warren and Sanders were against it. Its called having a vision, which President Obama had an abundance of.
