      However, the failure of the Republican Party to act on either gun violence or climate change certainly would validate declaring some kind of emergency! Don the Con is trying desperately to assuage his conservative base for promising to sign the appropriations bill that does not include money for his fantastical wall. That is not a valid reason for declaring a national emergency. I fear that the GOP will cave in the face of this insult; I pray that they do not.

      • February 14, 2019 at 6:05 pm

        I do think Trump will immediately just take whatever money he wants that is intended for other purposes and use it to start construction on some sort of crap wall. He wants headlines on Fox News and people talking about his depraved bravado. We must act quickly to bring forward injunctions in the courts.

      Greetings Judith. Thank you for the reassuring info provided in the NPR link. It was definitely encouraging to read …

      // … Congress also gave itself the ability to terminate an emergency declaration. In the more than 40 years since the law was passed, only one member of Congress has ever tried it.

      “It was a lever that we had,” said George Miller, the former Democratic congressman from California. “We decided to use it.”

      It was 2005, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when President George W. Bush issued a proclamation saying government contractors could pay workers less than usual for recovery-related projects. He justified it by saying the conditions caused by Katrina constituted a “national emergency” and waiving federal wage requirement would “result in greater assistance to these devastated communities” and “permit the employment of thousands of additional individuals.”

      Miller and others in Congress saw it differently.

      Miller introduced a resolution under the National Emergencies Act to terminate Bush’s action.
      Under the law, the relevant committee had 15 days to consider the measure and vote. Fourteen days later, President Bush announced he would revoke his own proclamation. That was the closest Congress ever came to voting to rescind a presidential emergency under the 1976 law.

      [BTW] To understand the intent of the law, it helps to understand the time when it was passed, in the wake of Watergate and the Vietnam War.

      ………………………………………………….. //

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

      It would seem the time is at hand when Congress will need to use its ‘ability to terminate an emergency declaration’.

      I’m guessing that the GOPigs have been aware for some time that the piles of money they get from the NRA originates in Russia. I hope Mueller will investigate this treasonous connection, as soon as we have the Tromp crime family in jail.

      He’ll get through. Unfortunately, people didn’t take the threat of a Republican packing the court with Rightwing extremists seriously enough in 2016 when they decided to sit out the election or vote for a third party. McConnell will continue to push through awful judges to liftetime appointments for as long as he is Senate Majority Leader.

      “Becoming,” the best-selling memoir by the former first lady, Michelle Obama, is a study in what happens when the ways we see ourselves don’t always line up with the ways that society sees us. In reading about her journey from high-achieving, self-possessed child in Chicago to the fraught glamour of her life in the White House, we marvel at the ways she balanced herself and her image in service of the country. And we discuss how Michelle Obama’s memoir fits into a powerful lineage of black women navigating entirely new circumstances with curiosity, strength and grace.

    My thoughts on why Dems should avoid running the 2020 election like the past – the 2016 election;

    for months now, the punditry and political class have worked double-time to convince Democrats to pick a candidate with “middle-of-the-ground” aka safe political sensibilities “who can unit the country” and “bring back the working class (who suffer from ‘economic anxiety’);

    the stuff that has happened since Team Traitor took power is one of the many reasons why this argument needs to stop.

    what we the country needs is someone who is going to unapologetically reverse all the crap traitor and corrupt republicans have put in place;

    the new president must also radically remake the country politically, socially, and economically into a sustainable nation that once again is admired around the world for its constant push to get racial justice;

    may be I have become politically radicalized …. but I am tired of the pain that is inflicted on the masses every single day by traitor and his enablers/complicity evil beings ….

    okay, Linda, … breathe

    ==========
    Former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld says he will challenge President Trump for the Republican presidential nomination

    The president remains popular with Republican voters, but Weld said he would attempt to defeat him or at a minimum hurt him with a primary challenge. Weld, who was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 until 1997, left the Republican Party in 2016 to run as the Libertarian Party’s vice-presidential nominee. He returned to the GOP this month.

    5 Democrats voted NO on the bill to keep the government open….

    Harris, Booker, Gilbrand, Warren, Markley..

    the bill pased in the Senate 83-16

    i know that there some strategic reason why they voted NO..i listened to Lawrence O’Donnell last night…explain that this vote was a way to show their progressive stripe because it did not limit the funding to Homeland Security…similar to what some Congress people did in the house……but it was a compromise bill…maybe they felt safe…because they knew it would pass..

    I can only imagine if President Obama has listened to Rahm Emanuel and gave up on the ACA…

    i wonder who thers senators were trying to impress…surely not the Federal Workers who lives were held in the balance…
    FTR…i am not impressed with this strategy..

    If Trump and Putin/Koch boys get away with this National Emergency con:
    What’s to stop him from declaring a National Emergency against gay people as well as immigrants, legal or not? Or the scapegoat du jour.
    Trump is drowning in extremely deep shark-infested water + welcomes negative attention.
    Thus expanding his powers now would be timely for the WH and timely for the global extreme right Authoritarian agenda.
    With a pass on National Emergency powers: Dicktraitor would have no constraints, the ultimate power.

    • February 15, 2019 at 10:48 am

      We have to see how this might be part of a wide push for absolute control. Let’s not figure it out when it is too late.
      Possibly Putin and Trump have played a waiting game and now the time is right to move quickly towards Authoritarianism – with an eye to a United States /Russia/China/Saudi Arabia/Venezuela oil fraternity.

    Border walls are an ecological, historical preservation nightmare on umpteen levels:
    There is talk of bypassing the National Historical Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act.
    It would endanger species such as peccaries, ocelots and jaguars that have annual and seasonal foraging cycles as resources change.
    It would commandeer private property, cut across indigenous lands, ignore preservation laws, and destroy precious archaeological sites.

    • February 15, 2019 at 11:15 am

      “Trump’s border wall threatens 93 endangered and threatened species,
      including jaguars, ocelots, Mexican gray wolves and cactus ferruginous pygmy owls, according to a new study by the Center for Biological Diversity. The study also found that 25 threatened or endangered species have designated “critical habitat” on the border, including more than 2 million acres within 50 miles of the border.”
      https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2017/border-wall-05-15-2017.php

    • February 15, 2019 at 11:16 am

      Noah Greenwald CBD director:
      “Trump’s border wall is a disaster for people and wildlife alike. It could drive magnificent species like the jaguar and ocelot to extinction in the United States.”“The border wall won’t be effective at stopping people seeking a better life from getting to this country, but it will destroy habitat and divide wildlife populations…Building a wall across the entirety of the border would cause massive damage to one of the most biologically diverse regions in North America and would be a boondoggle of the highest order.”
      https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2017/border-wall-05-15-2017.php

    • February 15, 2019 at 11:16 am

      “The sections of border wall that have already been built have had a range of negative effects on wildlife, including direct destruction of thousands of acres of habitat, indirect impacts from noise and light pollution, and division of cross-border wildlife populations like bighorn sheep and jaguars. The border wall would cut through the Cabeza Prieta, Buenos Aires and several other national wildlife refuges, along with Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Big Bend National Park and many other natural areas that, besides acting as corridors for wildlife, are national treasures.”
