yep, america likes the american jobs act

ABC: President Obama has jumped to a 15-point lead over the Republicans in Congress in trust to handle job creation, a sign the president’s $450 billion jobs package has hit its mark in public opinion. Fifty-two percent support the plan – and most say it just might work.

Overall approval of the U.S. Congress, meanwhile, has dropped to its lowest in polls dating back to the mid-1970s. And of the eight in 10 Americans who are dissatisfied with the way the country’s political system is working, more blame the Republicans in Washington than the president.

…. A month ago, Americans divided evenly, 40-40 percent, on whom they trusted more to handle job creation, Obama or the congressional Republicans. Now, after his jobs proposal and ongoing promotion of his plan, it’s 49-34 percent….

The president’s also maintained a large advantage over the Republicans in Congress in being seen as more concerned with the interests of middle-class Americans, now 52-32 percent. And the GOP, by a vast 70-17 percent, is seen as being more concerned than Obama with protecting the interests of the wealthy…

…. Obama’s jobs proposal has won some positive notice: Fifty-two percent of Americans support it, with 36 percent opposed and the rest withholding opinion. Even 21 percent of Republicans like the idea, as do 47 percent of independents (vs. 38 percent opposed) and more than eight in 10 Democrats.

Notably, somewhat more, 58 percent, think Obama’s jobs package, if it passed Congress, in fact would do a great deal or somewhat to create jobs – including 91 percent of Democrats, 52 percent of independents and a quarter of Republicans….

…. Seventy-five percent of Americans support raising taxes on Americans with annual incomes over $1 million….

Taxing millionaires in fact is one of the rare political issues to draw bipartisan majority support – 57 percent from Republicans, 75 percent among independents and 89 percent among Democrats. Even among supporters of the Tea Party political movement, 55 percent support raising taxes on millionaires, although this drops to 36 percent of “strong” Tea Party backers…..

he’s likeable enough

Politico/GWU poll

The polls weren’t pretty today, although as Steve Benen points out (here) a big majority favor the President and Democrats’ economic/jobs agenda over the GOP’s – and that could prove pretty significant in the coming months:

Politico’s poll asked a question about “a large scale federally subsidized nationwide construction program putting Americans back to work building roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals.” A 51% majority favored the idea, while only 21% opposed it.

When President Obama presents his jobs agenda on Thursday, it’s likely those who tune in will approve of his ideas…. for all of the president’s troubles in the polls, most of the public is still on board with what Democrats are proposing, and have no use for what the GOP is selling.

He also leads Perry 47-42% and Romney 46-45% in the NBC/WSJ poll.

What’s striking, too, is that despite all the efforts to demonize him, 74% still approve – strongly or somewhat – of the President “as a person”. Presumably the 14% who strongly disapprove are made up of Tea and Firebaggers? Must try harder at that demonizing 😉

opinions….

TPM: Nearly six in ten Americans approve of the eleventh hour budget deal struck between Congress and the White House to avert a government shutdown, according to a CNN poll  released on Monday. And what’s more, a plurality give Democrats the most credit for making it happen.

….While majorities of both Democrats and independents support the compromise, a plurality of Republicans dislike it, with fully half of them saying that their party gave up too much ground on the deal.

Democrats supported the compromise by a 66%-28% split, while independents backed it 56%-39%. But among Republicans, 47% saw the deal as a good thing, while 49% gave it a thumbs down because they felt the party had gotten the short end of the stick. Exactly 50% of Republicans said the party’s leaders had given up too much in the final deal.

About the next figures ….. most of the Professional Left must have had their phones switched off when Gallup called – I mean, they are the base, aren’t they?

hello people

I just wanted to explain why some of you have to wait a bit before your comments show up under posts.

Naturally enough, a whole bunch of creatures who don’t like the President very much (you know, hate-consumed blood-curdling half-wit numbskull dipstick nut-jobs) attempt to share their thoughts (and I use the word loosely) with us on a regular basis, so in an effort to ensure they remain in their cesspits and don’t infest this little blog the settings only allow through comments from people with brains. That’d be you people.

(I should, though, thank the creatures – they usually point out that the President is black. I never knew that!)

But! If you have a WordPress.com account and you had a comment approved at some point, then the rest of your comments will show up instantly.

If you don’t have a WordPress.com account then your comments effectively are from a ‘new’ person every time – so I need to ‘approve’ them. If I’m asleep at the time – and I sleep an awful lot (it’s my hobby) – then they won’t get through until I wake up.

I think – and I could be entirely wrong about this – if you just sign up for a WordPress.com account, without ever actually using it, then you’ll get on that, err, illustrious ‘approved’ list. But no worries AT ALL if you’d prefer not to do that, I’ll clear your comments as soon as I wake from my slumber.

The hate-mongers will, I promise, never infest this site, but occasionally, like last night, one of them escapes their cesspit. If you spot a comment by one of these unpleasant people let me me know (use ‘contact me’ in the top right of the sidebar) and I will take immense pleasure in clicking ‘trash’. Best place for them 😉

Thanks people. Love ya all.
