Colorado? Fired Up.

Denver Post: First lady Michelle Obama roused a crowd of an estimated 2,800 supporters and members of the public Wednesday morning at Arapahoe High School, ticking off her husband’s first-term accomplishments and urging attendees to work hard to get out the vote for a second.

“This feels like four more years,” Michelle Obama said as she neared the podium, rallying the the crowd who erupted into applause and bounced their Obama-Biden signs.

…. The first lady touched on key issues like the repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” and the Affordable Care Act - encouraging the crowd to bring the issues to their friends and neighbors.

…. The day began early for many attendees, like Carol Short, 57, left her home in southwest Denver to stand in line at 6:30 a.m. Her early planning proved beneficial as the snake of audience members wound around Arapahoe High School.

“We’re one of the swing states,” Short said. “So we just have to push.”

Short and her friend Jeannie Raiola, 62, are both with the Communications Workers for America and volunteer for the Obama campaign through phone banking and door drops.

I brought this over from the last thread…from Tally:

Make sure to watch The Ed Show today – he’s going to have on a guy from the committee that is investigating F&F – can’t remember his name, but he was on Ed’s radio show this morning. He was explaining just how STUPID and IGNORANT OF THE CONSTITUTION Idiot Issa is, by asking for docs that are illegal to release. Issa basically wants to hold Holder in Contempt for NOT BREAKING THE LAW. And how OUT OF LINE Issa is for NOT going after A SINGLE DOC OR PERSON FROM THE BUSH YEARS WHO STARTED THE WHOLE THING.

Issa has lost his fucking mind.

    Timeline:
    - Bush’s ATF & AZ admin started F&F
    - Agent got killed because it was a cluster fuck
    - Holder stops the program, and begins investigation
    - Issa begins investigating Holder…….. for what *really*?

WHO IS ISSA TRYING TO PROTECT BY STOPPING HOLDER’S INVESTIGATION?

And why are the media so fucking stupid/LYING about this???

Yes…and the more she talks about it, the clearer it becomes that Republicans want no mention of the Bush team that started this…are angry that Holder actually got things done and stopped this and started prosecuting these guys and getting convictions.I think they want to keep Holder from digging deeper and finding something untoward about R’s in this operation. Holder is effective, and R’s are getting nervous.

Randi got trashed by the firebaggers, because during the 2008 Primary, she called Hillary Clinton a ‘political whore’ in her nightclub standup act. Air America went after her like Rethugs and FOX do. They got her black-balled from ‘progressive’ media outlets, and hounded her into quitting ‘Air America’. She was out of work for months. After she finally returned to the airwaves, she’s had to rebuild, starting with just a handful of stations. Total F**king Hack Job.

Randi has always been one of the most honest, factual reporter-radio media person I have ever listened to. She has her s**t together, and will debate ANYBODY. Love Her. People like her need our support.

The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Perez reports that the Justice Department Inspector General’s probe of the botched ATF investigation known as Fast and Furious has led to a criminal investigation into the accidental disclosure of court-sealed wiretap applications.

Perez reports that Joshua Levy, a lawyer for an ATF supervisor who oversaw the Arizona-based operation, “inadvertently included court-sealed material in a batch of documents he turned over to the congressional investigators.” Congressional staffers reportedly told Levy of his error but declined to return the documents.

The mistaken disclosure stands in stark contrast to Rep. Darrell Issa’s account of how the Oversight Committee received sealed court documents. He said earlier this month that the documents came from “whistle-blowers that are tired of your stonewalling.” Issa claims the documents show that senior Justice Department officials were aware of the “gunwalking” tactics being used, an assertion disputed by Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and Attorney General Eric Holder, who is facing a contempt vote this afternoon.

An Issa spokeswoman did not immediately respond to request for comment.

At some point, probably not to many moments from now the President will walk to the podium in the Rose Garden with AG Holder and explain to the public a few simple facts: GW Bush started the program; as with most everything GW Bush touched, it turned to shit and someone died; AG Holder halted the program and investigated it.

UT …those “jobs bills” that the House passed are all deregulation bills!

3-9-2012: The House spent all day Thursday debating H.R. 3606, the “Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act”. It is better known as the “Reopening American Capital Markets to Emerging Growth Companies Act”. What it actually is, is a financial market deregulation bill. What it REALLY is, is a fake jobs bill. No jobs were created.

3-12-2012: Last Friday, March 9th, members of the House attended a hearing in Saranac Lake, NY, to discuss a farm bill. No jobs were created.

On Monday, March 12th, the House has scheduled a single hearing on (Are you ready?) “Explosion of Federal Regulations Threatening Jobs and Economic Survival in the West”… in Elko Nevada. DAMN those regulations! No jobs were created.

3-23-2012: For the past two days the House has been debating H.R. 5, the “HEALTH” bill, which is actually about tort reform. No jobs were created.

4-20-2012: The House passed “The Small Business Tax Cut Act” (H.R. 9) but they might as well have named the bill “Ponies For Everyone” because it wasn’t about small business, and it will never pass the Senate. No jobs were created today.

6-1-2012: Another day, another abortion bill. This time the “Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act.” Which was designed to stop abortions based on sex or race. Seriously. It failed. Apart from that bit of nonsense the day was one long last-minute rush to pass bills that pay the bills. No jobs were created.

-8-2012: The House passed a bill to repeal a new exise tax on medical devices. The GOP refers to this as a “jobs bill”. Another waste of time as the Senate will not consider the bill.

6-11-2012: On Friday the House voted to cut funding for Open World Leadership Center, the Congressional Research Service, and the Washington Botanic Garden. But, on the bright side, they voted themselves funds to print some snazzy new pocket-sized editions of the U.S. Constitution to hand out to constituents. As always, no jobs were created.

AH, screw it!! Maybe he should just send him this:

    The Fed punts
    By Jonathan Bernstein

If you’re following the political blogs today, what you’re seeing is mostly the Fast and Furious fuss up on the Hill, and more on the Veepstakes. Neither is likely to affect the November elections — or, for that matter, the lives of most Americans.

What will? The Federal Reserve’s decision today to hold steady for the time being, instead of easing monetary policy policy in response to recent signs of weakening in the economy. In other words, the Fed is not doing anything new to get people back to work.

The reviews (mostly over twitter so far) from liberal and centrist economists and economy-watchers have not been kind. It’s summarized in the first two questions to Fed Chair Ben Bernanke at his afternoon press conference: “You’ve downgraded the outlook a lot, but not done much. Why?” In other words, the Fed board agrees that the economy needs help, but for whatever reason has chosen not to provide it, at least right now.

The point here is that there’s plenty that the Fed could do, and for better or worse they are the only game in town, given that Congress is not going to do anything helpful, certainly not until after the election. That’s a long time for Americans who are suffering from the continued downturn to wait.

    Boehner and Cantor ——

  21. 117 Linda
    June 20, 2025 at 4:48 pm

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) announced Wednesday that the full House would consider a resolution finding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress next week. The House Oversight Committe voted Wednesday afternoon to find Holder in contempt because they allege he failed to turn over documents related to the committee’s investigation into the botched ATF operation known as Fast and Furious.

    Their joint statement:

“Despite being given multiple opportunities to provide the documents necessary for Congress’ investigation into Fast and Furious, Attorney General Holder continues to stonewall. Today, the Administration took the extraordinary step of exerting executive privilege over documents that the Attorney General had already agreed to provide to Congress. Fast and Furious was a reckless operation that led to the death of an American border agent, and the American people deserve to know the facts to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. While we had hoped it would not come to this, unless the Attorney General reevaluates his choice and supplies the promised documents, the House will vote to hold him in contempt next week. If, however, Attorney General Holder produces these documents prior to the scheduled vote, we will give the Oversight Committee an opportunity to review in hopes of resolving this issue.”

UT, we support President Obama because we believe he wants to help the middle class, help the poor reach the middle class, and even see the rich succeed. We believe he is a caring kind heart person, who loves his family, who has compassion for those who is without. Unlike the Republicans, they support Mitt Romney because of their hatred for President Obama. AG Holder’s statement just released:

Statement of Attorney General Eric Holder on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Vote

Attorney General Eric Holder issued the following statement today:

“In recent months, the Justice Department has made unprecedented accommodations to respond to information requests by Chairman Issa about misguided law enforcement tactics that began in the previous administration and allowed illegal guns to be taken into Mexico. Department professionals have spent countless hours compiling and providing thousands of documents — nearly 8,000 — to Chairman Issa and his committee. My staff has had numerous meetings with congressional staff to try and accommodate these requests and yesterday, I met with Chairman Issa to offer additional internal Department documents and information that would satisfy what he identified as the Committee’s single outstanding question.

“Unfortunately, Chairman Issa has rejected all of these efforts to reach a reasonable accommodation. Instead, he has chosen to use his authority to take an extraordinary, unprecedented and entirely unnecessary action, intended to provoke an avoidable conflict between Congress and the Executive Branch. This divisive action does not help us fix the problems that led to this operation or previous ones and it does nothing to make any of our law enforcement agents safer. It’s an election-year tactic intended to distract attention — and, as a result — has deflected critical resources from fulfilling what remains my top priority at the Department of Justice: Protecting the American people.

“Simply put, any claims that the Justice Department has been unresponsive to requests for information are untrue. From the beginning, Chairman Issa and certain members of the Committee have made unsubstantiated allegations first, then scrambled for facts to try to justify them later. That might make for good political theater, but it does little to uncover the truth or address the problems associated with this operation and prior ones dating back to the previous Administration.

“I have spent most of my career in law enforcement and worked closely with brave agents who put their lives on the line every day. I know the sacrifices they make, so as soon as allegations of gunwalking came to my attention – and well before Chairman Issa expressed any interest in this issue — I ordered the practice stopped. I made necessary personnel changes in the Department’s leadership and instituted policy changes to ensure better oversight of significant investigations. And, I directed the Department’s Inspector General to open a comprehensive investigation. That investigation is ongoing, and the American people and Congress can count on it to produce a tough, independent review of the facts.

“When Chairman Issa later began his own investigation, I made it clear that the Department would cooperate with all appropriate oversight requests, while still adhering to our legal obligations to protect information involving ongoing law enforcement investigations, legally-protected grand jury material and other sensitive information whose disclosure would endanger the American people or our agents investigating open cases.

“The American people deserve better. That is why, I will remain focused on, and committed to, the Justice Department’s mission to protect the rights, safety, and best interests of my fellow citizens and to stand by my brave colleagues in law enforcement.”

AG Holder is a wickedly smart, “grown-ass” Black man who has his shit together and who is not afraid of these mofos. This is what they cannot handle. The days of eyes down, “yassuh massa” are long gone. These unreconstructed bigots have had their day. They need to move out of the way before our society’s forward march mows them over and under.

This Issa dude is a real piece of hateful, retaliatory poo. His biography is real sketchy, to put it nicely——full of lies, lies about his military service, lies about his military evaluation, criminal charges of thefts and mysterious fires—-none of which were his fault, of course. Managed to accumulate a boatload of money from car alarm businesses—-hundreds of millions— one of the wealthiest in Congress, if not THE wealthiest. Corruption charges of legislating for personal gain while in Congress. Mother is Mormon, interestingly, father Lebanese.
Again we are reminded of what a turning point that 2010 election was—-all the people who sat on their butts and didn’t bother to vote, all those who discouraged Dems from voting because of no pony—-the media who aired all the tea party crud with no challenge——all share blame for all this ugliness—-all the obstruction and putting the worst people in charge of all these committees and control of the House.

Senate lawmakers on Wednesday blocked a GOP-led effort to scuttle Environmental Protection Agency regulations that mandate cuts in mercury pollution and other toxic emissions from coal-fired power plants.

The 46-53 vote against Sen. James Inhofe’s (R-Okla.) resolution staves off what would have been a stinging election-year rebuke of the White House green agenda.

There are signs that Democrats are starting to open their wallets to Democratic-leaning super PACs, which have struggled to match the fundraising pace of Republican-leaning groups. Priorities USA Action, the super PAC supporting President Obama’s reelection, announced it raised $4 million in May, the group’s best fundraising month to date.

Cummings: Holder Contempt Vote Would Make Boehner Amongst ‘Most Extreme Speakers In History’

House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) issued this statement on the vote to Holder Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress:

“What we just witnessed was an extreme, virtually unprecedented action based on election year politics rather than fact,” said Cummings. “Even in the face of an assertion of executive privilege, the Republicans didn’t even pause to consider the law and instead decided to take this extreme step.

“The House has never held an Attorney General in contempt, and the only precedent for what this Committee did today was in the 1990s when then-Chairman Burton held Janet Reno in contempt. It was so extreme that even then-Speaker Newt Gingrich refused to bring it the floor for a vote. If Speaker Boehner brings this contempt citation to the floor, he will be known as one of the most extreme Speakers in history.”

As TPM previously reported, Boehner previously opposed a contempt vote because the DOJ Inspector General had not completed its investigation. An IG report on Fast and Furious is still pending.

Sorry, am I the only one that sees the “strange” in this?

Right Wing Group: Protections To Prevent Prison Rape Are Too ‘Costly’ And ‘Heavy-Handed’

A right-wing “think tank” released a report today criticizing the Obama administration’s new anti-prison rape protections as a “burden” that is too “costly” and “heavy-handed.”
This week, the Department of Justice published new standards addressing the epidemic of rape and sexual abuse in our nation’s prisons. The guidelines, which apply immediately to federal prisons and give financial incentives for states to comply, are a laudable, widely praised, and long overdue step in combating rape in the United States.
The American Action Forum, a Wall Street-funded group whose C(4) runs millions of dollars in attack ads against Democrats, responded by lambasting the move as too “costly” and “complicated.” From their report:

Wonder if these RWNJ’s were in prison, where they should be, if they would still say the same thing??

    Another DOJ good job!

Eh, I have a libertarian who wants to engage about “Wide Receiver” and “Fast and Furious”. I’ve basically left his tweet unanswered. Working on a new piece for TPV, which I consider to be more important.

Actually, Milt Shook at PCTC had a GREAT piece up a couple of weeks ago about how to deal with Twitter bullies. Basically, DON’T. You won’t get through to them. They don’t want to engage in reasoned debate, but just pummel you. What they want is the attention. Starving them of that is the best thing you can do.
