I love this! Chipsticks, you are so funny and thoughtful and the all-around sweetheart of the world. On Valentine’s Day, hope you feel the love and gratitude that floats up and out in your direction, every time I visit TOD. In fact, just seeing a new post listed in my e-mail makes me pre-happy. Thank you thank you thank you. Gotta go hangout with my hero now, by the crackling fire. Time for cocoa? Maybe…..bye!
Ok, so Cochran, Collins, Murkowski, and Johanns voted yes. One more to move forward.
Welker on NBC said if this doesn’t pass and is delayed until next week then Hagel misses attending an important national security conference in Brussels. Panetta would have to go in his place.
James Carter, the opposition researcher who unearthed the infamous 47 percent video involving Mitt Romney, met President Barack Obama for the first time at an event in Decatur, Ga. Thursday.
The meeting was first reported by Politico and confirmed to TPM by Carter. He said his cousin, Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter (D), told the President about his role in the video while they were waiting in line for a photo.
“It’s much better when someone else does that,” Carter joked in a phone interview. “I didn’t want to be the one to tell him and come off as arrogant.”
For those who only pay attention to sensationalism, the 47% video did a lot to expose Mitt Romney as the soulless greedy monster that we all knew him to be. A lot of people would have allowed themselves to be hoodwinked if they hadn’t heard it directly from Romney’s own lips - as it was, many more decided that they weren’t the ones Romney was talking about simply because of their skin color…
It’s a little off, but you get the idea I hope. If you’re alone or like Gary Marshall movies, Valentines Day is a hoot. Date Night for those couples in rut. Red for action and love. Then of course, I’d love to hear you’re favorites. Trivia you could care less about, but my hubby and I had our first date on Feb. 14, 1970. Our senior year in high school. Oh, the Sweetheart Ball. 😻😘💝💘
Have a great Day. I tweeted my favorite video of the First Couple. The were talking about their first date!
Actually I think meta is correct. Hagel will be confirmed, just not today.
The GOP is acting like a two year old, who throws a tantrum knowing that he is not going to get the candy anyway. Eventually, he will give in, but meanwhile, he will yell, scream and throw himself on the floor just to give himself an illusion of control/power, etc.
Senator McCaskill from Missouri was on Hardball and she was piss off to with what the Republicans did. But she said that Chuck Hagel will be confirm, they have got some Republicans who said they will vote to confirm him when they come back. But McCaskill didn’t care for the B.S. the Republicans are pulling. That bitter old fool McCain goes on Fox and says that Republicans are upset with Hagel because Hagel call Bush the worse President ever, Hagel didn’t support the surge, and he said some other things. But hay Republicans so nice to know you put the welfare of the country ahead of your bitter revenge. I want Hagel to remain strong, don’t give up to these weasels.
This really makes me angry that they are punshing this qualified man just because he has a mind of his own and was appointed by PBO. I hope we never have another republican president, and I hope Miss Lindsay lose his primary after all of this right wing posturing. This is so sad.
It will be more than one week. By the next time….10-15 days, they will start all over again…..nothing would have changed.
Lindsey Graham……was the top one in the late 1990s going after Clinton for impeachment. Nothing has changed. Seriously, I hope that the Hostler Owner would offer ONE Dollars for anyone who would out Lindsey Graham. That would have stooped him cold in his tracks.
Lindsey Graham’s actions have nothing to do with his sexual orientation. He’s a tiny little man, and holds keeping his position as being more important than the responsibilities inherent in that position -> to serve his constituents and his country. What he is doing is unpatriotic and dangerous, and undermines Hagel’s ultimate authority over the military when he is finally confirmed. The people who will re-elect this Graham character need to think long and hard whether this is the type of person and the types of actions they want responsible for the national security that keeps their children safe from foreign and domestic enemies. Whether Lindsey Graham is gay or not has zero to do with what he did today. And the damage he’s done for the past several months over this Benghazi business - to the memories of those who were lost, and their families, and the stature and authority of the National Security Team (including Susan Rice), who represent this country on the world stage.
This is more than kabuki this time, meta. They have made Harry Reid look like the fool that he unfortunately is. This is a takedown of government. A Defense Secy has NEVER been filibustered, and there was NO REASON to filibuster him. He is qualified and everyone knows it.
I tend to agree with you, Meta, that it’s Kabuki theatre. I know I may be alone on this, but I don’t understand why TOD members are freaking out about this and going after Democrats who voted unanimously for Hagel. Why are we not going after McCain for promising not to filibuster on Wed. but then filibustered on Th. Why all this venom against Sen. Harry Reid? If Sen Hagel is not confirmed, because his fellow Republicans are angry at him for wanting to serve the country under President Obama, then I am sure the President will nominate another excellent candidate. I refuse to set my hair on fire and start attacking our own because of the blatant insanity of the GOP. As I said yesterday, Harry Reid is not the enemy. if he were his fellow Democratic Senators would have gotten rid of him.
These dems have the nerve to complain that PBO didn’t do enough for them for reelection, and this is what they do? I guess Reid forgot that he would not have won reelection without POTUS and FLOTUS making all those trips to Nevada, or he just doesn’t care.
Reid changed his vote from yes to no so that in 10 days he can file a motion to reconsider. Some of the Repubs have indicated they would not filibuster the next vote. Why this is the Repub strategy is beyond me except it means McCain and Graham have 2 more Sundays to go on TV and gripe.
meta, I think they just do it to show they can. They have no power, no respect, no dignity and no common sense. They are outshone and outmaneuvered by the president at every turn. So they have to do whatever little nasty things they can to irritate him and show they have “power” to block something he wants. The are small people and the world knows it.
Lamar Alexander (I believe that’s who it was) admitted that he wouldn’t have asked somecof the questions that were being asked and doesnt even care about the answers. Just confirmation that they have no real reason to hold up the votes but just want to show us that they can.
They are moving the football. They will find ‘other concerns’ and do this again. Hopefully, all of my Illinois TOD friends are sending letters and emails to weasly Mark Kirk.
Too bad there are no longer good old-fashioned “duels” in the Senate. Maybe they could use the boxing ring, instead. Old Harry might just take a few of those lying nutjobs out. This is another sad day for our democracy, among a gazillion since the 2000 election, and shame on each and every one of these Republicans. But it’s too bad they are so far gone that they can no longer feel shame, either. Every other American is being left in their dust. Oh, and, I’m 66 years old, but I’m sick to death of seeing these old crotchedy folks running the Senate. Get some new blood in there who can negotiate and have backbones.
This woman is seriously whining about Starbucks? She doesn’t want an increase in the minimum wage because she’ll have to pay employees more and will lose her Starbucks run.
They are all plants, they are all talking points.
These chats are a bad idea as a result of.
He needs to just keep educating the people with speeches in pointed cities and Rustic areas. The Republucabs can’t ness that up!
I don’t agree. That’s how she feels. Doesn’t mean she’s a plant.
These fireside chats are useful because he reaches millions of people here and worldwide with the click of a button. This is the digital age and any white house must learn to use its power if it wants its agenda to be successful. Speeches can’t always be done 24/7. That’s not original and it’s not creative.
I think you are both correct - the people could very well be plants (i.e., selected on the basis of their specific political leanings which may not be pro-Obama, Democratic, or liberal), AND these chats are VERY useful, because it allows the country and the world to see how incredibly informed, sensible, poised, even when people don’t agree with him, or didn’t vote for him, or have different ideas about how to get things done.
What good does that do? Railing against the barn door after the horse has left the barn. If any De had power and passion I would have appreciated that prior to the filibuster
According to McCain, the Republicans are angry with Hagel because “he said such terrible things about President Bush, was against the Iraq War and said such ridiculous things about the surge. “
Kind of wondering where they got some of these people on the hangout? The most voted question was about minting pennies? Seriously??? The talking points masquerading as questions from the proud OC stay at home Mom/conversative blogger whining about “so called assault weapons”/how can I still pay my starbucks if the minimum wage goes up? And even the first question on immigration is what are YOU going to do about immigration reform your executive orders didn’t go far enough.
Course our illustrious Prez is handling it all with grace and ablomb in disabusing some of these folks of their ignorance but JEEBUS!!!
Google probable selected a bunch of Republicans and Libertarians. I’ve noticed that my Google searches have been increasingly pro-Repub and antiDEM, particularly, anti-OBAMA.
It’s very disappointing. Thought I was going to learn something. LE SIGH… Now proud OC stay at home Mom just stated that between the leaked guidelines about teh dronezzzz, the closed budget hearings, blah, blah, he’s not kept his 2008 campaign promise about having a transparent government. Oh puhleeze girlfriend, SPARE ME. Our president has incredible patience, I would have bitch slapped these people by now. Guess it’s time for the famous * CLICK *
While some of the people were irritating with their questions, I thought his responses were thorough, interesting and informative, as usual. PBO usually shines in these settings regardless of the type of questions. He always uses them as teachable moments and makes it interesting.
Completely agree about his responses but I would expect nothing less from our President. He’s always able to talk cogently and plainly on a wide swath of issues irrespective of the setting. I was just expecting more from the Hangout +’ers. The only question I really found interesting was from the hot pink haired girl about the Tech start-ups and the patents… oh well c’est la vie
They lady with the big hair is definitely a republican. I got mine and I don’t want the minimum age raised because I may have to pay more for coffee. Gee!!!
I saw that and I thought what a selfish bitch. Sorry but that’s what I thought. The President was very patient with his answer. Typical conservative “I’ve got mine, screw the rest of you”. Oh well. There will always be jerks I suppose.
I’m so sick and tired of these cheese eating, no backbone having democrats. I’m watching tweety, and Rep. Elijah Cummings was on talking about not being able to pass a comprehensive gun bill, these fuckers never disappoint. Whenever President Obama puts something on the line, these democrats never fail at fucking it up. How the fuck does Harry Reid stand by and let President Obama’s nominee for defense secretary get shit-canned?
I hope Hagel hangs in there, these idiots are just spiteful incarnate. Are they off on yet another vacay Friday? If not, why can’t they do so tomorrow?
Think I heard they’re off for President’s Day, so they wrapped another million hours around that, including travel time, plus constituent time, plus overtime, plus time to get their hair cut, and personal time they lost when they were what they call “working.” I don’t expect a vote for a while.
Wonder what they’d do if their constituents arrived en masse @ their offices while they’re on yet another vacay & took over their damn jobs? OK, that was a nice daydream but it stopped me from blowing a gasket! ;)
I’m so tired of the games. These bastards are really undermining the country — threatening our national security and depressing the economy. Their actions gave aid and comfort to the North Koreans just this past Monday. When will they learn?
@SenOrrinHatch Present=No. You are just as guilty as your 40 GOP comrades. GOP games undermine USA = TREASON. #GOPTreason
As I’ve said in other situations and in other contexts: Does Obama have to wipe Dems’ asses? Jeez, you’re adults, fucking HELP him, don’t expect him to do everything on his own.
Those who tweet should remind Ryan G. that VP Biden is pres of the senate. Also Jay Carney when asked said that they were in support of reform then being proposed by the reformers. Again….people here are selectively ignoring Boxter, Feinstein, Pryor, Baucus and the rest that would not even support the talking filibuster.
McCain had Levin supporting his weak version.
McCain and Fisher from NE said that they were not for Filibustering Hagel. That was just last week. Today, both voted No. Levin must be happy.
Ryan Grim seems a lot less informed than the typical TOD poster.
Reid blew reform.
Next opportunity is 2015.
There is ample blame to go around: several Democrtic senators resisted reform on the basis they would lose the senate and then what.
Weak and dishonest.
We kid ourselves when we think any party works for the people of the USA.
Nope! Because he is full of shit! You can only change rules before first session of new Congress, unless you hold a Vote of 60 votes to change filibuster to a desired number, like 55.
But Ryan does not know, he probably heard it and wants to sound sage! :(
No. Any senate rule can be changed. There is NO rule that said they could not. On the last page I had explained a way it is possible. Bobfr disagrees. I agreed not to be disagreeable. But I know that what I said was right. But Bobfr presented his version. Perhaps both are right….I don’t remember now. The last time that I had read the rules were in the late 1990s.
I lent my Parliamentary rules book out. It was never returned to me. I may now have to make another investment soon.
If it were up to a group of swing voters known as Walmart moms, Congress would pass President Barack Obama’s State of the Union proposals to expand preschool education and enact stricter gun laws.
But they are ambivalent about Obama’s pledge to raise the federal minimum wage, cool on his plan to overhaul immigration and skeptical about the focus on climate change.
These were the broad conclusions from focus groups of so-called Walmart moms conducted Wednesday in Philadelphia and Kansas City. A recording of the discussions was screened Thursday for reporters in Washington.
The Walmart moms, a group first identified by Public Opinion Strategies in 2008 and tracked in the last two elections, backed Obama in 2008, the GOP congressional candidates in 2010 and Obama last year. They are working- and middle-class women who have struggled through the economic downturn, pinched by the rising costs of health care, college, food and gas.
And although they have little faith in Washington, they remain surprisingly hopeful that Congress and the president will work together over the next four years. When asked to rate their level on hope on a scale of one (lowest) to 10 (highest), the average in both groups was about 6.
Among all the issues discussed in the State of the Union, the president’s plan for expanding early childhood education drew the most enthusiastic response from both parties, although they raised concerns on how it would be funded.
They questioned the effectiveness of passing new gun laws, but most of the moms – Democrat and Republican – said Congress should do something.
Who are these “Wal-mart” moms anyway…..are they middle class moms who shop at wal-mart? are they wal-mart workers? because if they are the later then they are not informed enough in my opinion to know that the President is looking out for their interest which they clearly have been voting against because they are “conservative”.
I missed the Fireside chat - I think I saw a pacific time zone listed and thought it took place later - anyway the comments here are confusing - was it useful or fun or anything or was it just stupid questions?
It is stunning but way incomplete. McCain’s resentment is mammoth.
He is still a senator, nothing but a senator. Never will be anything more.
Kerry is SOS.

If you're going to run any campaign at all about LGBT issues, please don't make the same mistake a lot of them do. Demi, Bi, Ace, and Pansexuals get erased from almost every single one, and it is very disheartening to see that your sexuality is not only erased, but discredited as if it never existed. I struggled to discover my identity for two years because I thought on transexuals, gays, and lesbians were around. Run a campaign that displays those, and you will help more people than you know.
No questions, lol. I just wanted to say thank you. I know it hasn't been easy to be so forthrightly supportive of the LGBT community. It's been politically risky. But you've transformed my life and the lives of so many other Gay people. Given us a complete future in our own country. And I'll never forget that. Thanks. *huuuugs*
What do you mean when you say you will "support" the effort? What steps will you actually be taking?

Too much heat. Will come back later.
I think it is 4 Ayes …they need one more.
Are all the Democrats voting Aye?
I think so.
Yes….we will know if they come up short if Reid has to change his vote to NO
Hi everybody. Congrats on first, carol. Thanks for the updates on the Hagel nomination. I just can’t look.
I’m throwing in the R’s to build the fire!

Weigel says Collins is a no. I thought I read here that Collins was a yes?
I think he’s wrong. That’s not what I’m reading from anyone else.
She said no late yesterday.
On confirmation (which is so ridiculous on its face I could scream).
She voted Yes….but she will vote NO on confirmation…..
Murkowski votes aye. One more vote needed I believe.
Ok, so Cochran, Collins, Murkowski, and Johanns voted yes. One more to move forward.
Welker on NBC said if this doesn’t pass and is delayed until next week then Hagel misses attending an important national security conference in Brussels. Panetta would have to go in his place.
That idiot Hatch voted “present.” What a WEASEL.
McCain voted no.
Yippie-yi-yo-ki-yay Mother F$@&….
not surprised at all…
Mother…..BLANK……BLANK…….BLANK…….BLANK!!!
Do we know whose vote we are waiting for?
So how many votes are outstanding now? Can anyone tell?

This Senate is FUBAR!!!!!
For Mark Kirk to vote NO? Seriously? Really dude?
I’m just going to hold back.
I can’t use the language I’m thinking…….
He did vote no
Over. F-k!!!
Wow! Fire Reid! Get rid of him!
It failed
I’m livid.
I won’t send a political email from my office computer, but Mark Kirk is hearing from me. Against cloture?!?! Of a Republican nominee?!?! Seriously?
I feel bad for Hagel!
Ayes are 59. Nays are 39. Orrin Hatch voted present. Filibuster on Hagel stands firm.
58-39-1 present. (Hatch)
They did it. Well Harry, this is what happens when you forget to put your gonads on in the morning!
Well, we could have those Rocky Mountain Oysters!!! Yippie-yi-yo-ki-yay MoFu….John McClane.
I gotta tell ya I’m close to being ill.
So am I. The Senate is FUBAR…..
With a whole bunch of SNAFU too!
Agreed.
They don’t care Harry! They don’t like the federal Government and want to ruin everything.
You should have done Filibuster reform…
These people in the Hangout……
The first one is repeating the RWNJ talking point about assault weapons. UGH.
Second guy thinks the govt is coming after his guns. OY.
OMG, the 3rd question is about how tough is would be for biz if we raise the minimum wage. WTF????????
It’s actually good for the President to swat down these right wing talking points very easily. And he does it so well.
Sad! There are days I can’t stand the Dems! Here’s looking at Harry Reid!
So, The Republicans rebuttal, we have Panetta and he will stay put.
See?
Panetta is no longer Defense Secretary and we know it and the GOP knows it.
No- cornyn said Pentagon SPOX said that Panetta will remain Sec Def until Hagel is sworn in.
PO big time….putting our national interest in jeapordy….PO…couldn’t be madder
It is very sad and very discouraging.
You have to wonder if our side wants to win.
This is more BS Kabuki. Hagel will be confirmed. But it will have to wait a week.

Durbin is letting them have it!
What good does that do? Railing against the barn door after the horse has left the barn. If any De had power and passion I would have appreciated that prior to the filibuster
De I meaant Dem
He was quite active before the filibuster reform vote, but he can’t do it if the Majority Leader doesn’t give a damn.
This failure to stop a filibuster is entirely on Harry Reid. He didn’t have the manhood to shut down the filibuster as an obstruction tool.
I respectfully disagree! Harry Reid is just one of the strong willed 55 Senators in his caucus. He cannot act as a dictator
I’m now confused. What’s next? Do they get this done before next week for Brux Summit. WTF?!
Did the 59 votes include VPOTUS?
Doesn’t work like that. Only if there’s a tie. VP does not vote on every issue.
No. It’s 59 ayes. 39 nays. Orrin Hatch voted present.
This allows Harry Reid to bring up the vote again about 10 days from now.
Next they will bring it back up a week from Tuesday and it will pass…..
And no… VPOTUS was not there to vote….he only does that if there is a 50-50 tie anticipated.
Reid had to change his vote to NO so he can bring it up again……
Hatch voted “Present ” ..
According to McCain, the Republicans are angry with Hagel because “he said such terrible things about President Bush, was against the Iraq War and said such ridiculous things about the surge. “
So vote against him if he’s so odious. But don’t filibuster the nomination as if he’s Satan Incarnate, you bitter, miserable old man.
Why can’t Reid keep them in session, no 10 days vacation?
Exactly will that accomplish, except to make them more intransigent? People, please, this not the end of the world!
I meant to say: “What” will that accomplish.
Thank you all. Lawd, this is so backwards for this novice!
This country is in serious trouble. Free speech readily supports people like LaPierre to broadcast lies and we think it’s okay.
Seen on Twitter: GIF of GOP filibuster
http://www.fandrop.com/drop/20239355
oh here we go with the stupid drone question
They lady with the big hair is definitely a republican. I got mine and I don’t want the minimum age raised because I may have to pay more for coffee. Gee!!!
WHAT? I didn’t see that part!
My mouth dropped open when she asked that. It was at the beginning shortly after her stupid question about “so called” assault weapons…
I saw that and I thought what a selfish bitch. Sorry but that’s what I thought. The President was very patient with his answer. Typical conservative “I’ve got mine, screw the rest of you”. Oh well. There will always be jerks I suppose.
and on it goes…more drone questions…
I’m so sick and tired of these cheese eating, no backbone having democrats. I’m watching tweety, and Rep. Elijah Cummings was on talking about not being able to pass a comprehensive gun bill, these fuckers never disappoint. Whenever President Obama puts something on the line, these democrats never fail at fucking it up. How the fuck does Harry Reid stand by and let President Obama’s nominee for defense secretary get shit-canned?
Because they can…effer’s
Are some people at TOD trying to outdo the emoprogs at being outraged at Democrats who, by the way, voted unanimously for Hagel?
Hagel vote moved to be 2/26/2013.
OK, that was a nice daydream but it stopped me from blowing a gasket! ;)
I like your daydream! After writing what I did, I kinda calmed down … until the next thing they pull!
That was an exciting and informative hangout. Varied questions and great answers.
Much better questions than the WH Press Corp
Has Richard Lew taken over the Treasury already? Did I missed his confirmation hearings and swearing in?
Yesterday, I believe was his confirmation hearing. He is 57 yrs old and is also a grandfather.
I can’t believe he’s a grandfather!
I’m so tired of the games. These bastards are really undermining the country — threatening our national security and depressing the economy. Their actions gave aid and comfort to the North Koreans just this past Monday. When will they learn?
Excellent tweet, Alycee! It’s people like Hatch, McCain, Graham, etc., that we should be outraged about.
Ryan Grimm says it’s the Presidents fault for not coming out for the filibuster reform before this.
Fuck you Ryan, Fuck you!
As I’ve said in other situations and in other contexts: Does Obama have to wipe Dems’ asses? Jeez, you’re adults, fucking HELP him, don’t expect him to do everything on his own.
Folks always find a way to blame PBO
Ryan GrimmReaper is what I call him…
Does he want the President to be a Senator and the President….? They are pathetic.
Fine some way to blame President Obama for everything. Tell that Ryan Grimm to kiss my donkey.
Right because the rest of the Democrats would have jumped and voted for it.
Happy Valentine’s Day! To President Obama and his family and to all my fellow TOD’ers
Right back atcha, VL !
Ryan Grimm on REV ALs program just said that Harry Reid could still get Filibuster Reform done
Does he say HOW? I mean, 67 votes are 67 votes, which Harry doesn’t have.
Joy Reid is the best and MSNBC need to learn that, because she speaks from facts, not foolishness.
I don’t know…i must say that i am not a scholar when it comes to the Senate

Walmart Moms are center right, what about all Moms?
This makes me hopeful.
Did you see this?
Dan Pfeiffer @pfeiffer44
Sen McCain’s admission on Fox News that the unprecedented Hagel filibuster is revenge for mean things he said abt President Bush is stunning
It is stunning but way incomplete. McCain’s resentment is mammoth.
He is still a senator, nothing but a senator. Never will be anything more.
Kerry is SOS.
Hagel for DOD?
Unbearable .
