On Valentine’s Day, hope you feel the love and gratitude that floats up and out in your direction, every time I visit TOD. In fact, just seeing a new post listed in my e-mail makes me pre-happy. Thank you thank you thank you. Gotta go hangout with my hero now, by the crackling fire. Time for cocoa? Maybe…..bye!

Ok, so Cochran, Collins, Murkowski, and Johanns voted yes. One more to move forward.

Welker on NBC said if this doesn’t pass and is delayed until next week then Hagel misses attending an important national security conference in Brussels. Panetta would have to go in his place.

James Carter, the opposition researcher who unearthed the infamous 47 percent video involving Mitt Romney, met President Barack Obama for the first time at an event in Decatur, Ga. Thursday.

The meeting was first reported by Politico and confirmed to TPM by Carter. He said his cousin, Georgia state Sen. Jason Carter (D), told the President about his role in the video while they were waiting in line for a photo.

“It’s much better when someone else does that,” Carter joked in a phone interview. “I didn’t want to be the one to tell him and come off as arrogant.”

For those who only pay attention to sensationalism, the 47% video did a lot to expose Mitt Romney as the soulless greedy monster that we all knew him to be. A lot of people would have allowed themselves to be hoodwinked if they hadn’t heard it directly from Romney’s own lips - as it was, many more decided that they weren’t the ones Romney was talking about simply because of their skin color…

      Mr. Carter deserves our thanks!

It’s a little off, but you get the idea I hope. If you’re alone or like Gary Marshall movies, Valentines Day is a hoot. Date Night for those couples in rut. Red for action and love. Then of course, I’d love to hear you’re favorites. Trivia you could care less about, but my hubby and I had our first date on Feb. 14, 1970. Our senior year in high school. Oh, the Sweetheart Ball. 😻😘💝💘
Have a great Day. I tweeted my favorite video of the First Couple. The were talking about their first date!

        February 14, 2025 at 5:13 pm

Actually I think meta is correct. Hagel will be confirmed, just not today.

The GOP is acting like a two year old, who throws a tantrum knowing that he is not going to get the candy anyway. Eventually, he will give in, but meanwhile, he will yell, scream and throw himself on the floor just to give himself an illusion of control/power, etc.

          February 14, 2025 at 6:38 pm

Senator McCaskill from Missouri was on Hardball and she was piss off to with what the Republicans did. But she said that Chuck Hagel will be confirm, they have got some Republicans who said they will vote to confirm him when they come back. But McCaskill didn’t care for the B.S. the Republicans are pulling. That bitter old fool McCain goes on Fox and says that Republicans are upset with Hagel because Hagel call Bush the worse President ever, Hagel didn’t support the surge, and he said some other things. But hay Republicans so nice to know you put the welfare of the country ahead of your bitter revenge. I want Hagel to remain strong, don’t give up to these weasels.

This really makes me angry that they are punshing this qualified man just because he has a mind of his own and was appointed by PBO. I hope we never have another republican president, and I hope Miss Lindsay lose his primary after all of this right wing posturing. This is so sad.

    • 67 Nena20409
      February 14, 2025 at 5:13 pm

It will be more than one week. By the next time….10-15 days, they will start all over again…..nothing would have changed.

Lindsey Graham……was the top one in the late 1990s going after Clinton for impeachment. Nothing has changed. Seriously, I hope that the Hostler Owner would offer ONE Dollars for anyone who would out Lindsey Graham. That would have stooped him cold in his tracks.

The next vote is a week from Tuesday.

      • 69 theo67
        February 14, 2025 at 6:09 pm

Lindsey Graham’s actions have nothing to do with his sexual orientation. He’s a tiny little man, and holds keeping his position as being more important than the responsibilities inherent in that position -> to serve his constituents and his country. What he is doing is unpatriotic and dangerous, and undermines Hagel’s ultimate authority over the military when he is finally confirmed. The people who will re-elect this Graham character need to think long and hard whether this is the type of person and the types of actions they want responsible for the national security that keeps their children safe from foreign and domestic enemies. Whether Lindsey Graham is gay or not has zero to do with what he did today. And the damage he’s done for the past several months over this Benghazi business - to the memories of those who were lost, and their families, and the stature and authority of the National Security Team (including Susan Rice), who represent this country on the world stage.

This is more than kabuki this time, meta. They have made Harry Reid look like the fool that he unfortunately is. This is a takedown of government. A Defense Secy has NEVER been filibustered, and there was NO REASON to filibuster him. He is qualified and everyone knows it.

This is reprehensible, even for them.

    • 72 nathkatun7
      February 15, 2025 at 12:24 am

I tend to agree with you, Meta, that it’s Kabuki theatre. I know I may be alone on this, but I don’t understand why TOD members are freaking out about this and going after Democrats who voted unanimously for Hagel. Why are we not going after McCain for promising not to filibuster on Wed. but then filibustered on Th. Why all this venom against Sen. Harry Reid? If Sen Hagel is not confirmed, because his fellow Republicans are angry at him for wanting to serve the country under President Obama, then I am sure the President will nominate another excellent candidate. I refuse to set my hair on fire and start attacking our own because of the blatant insanity of the GOP. As I said yesterday, Harry Reid is not the enemy. if he were his fellow Democratic Senators would have gotten rid of him.

    February 14, 2025 at 5:08 pm

These dems have the nerve to complain that PBO didn’t do enough for them for reelection, and this is what they do? I guess Reid forgot that he would not have won reelection without POTUS and FLOTUS making all those trips to Nevada, or he just doesn’t care.

  27. 74 jackiegrumbacher

      February 14, 2025 at 5:12 pm

Reid changed his vote from yes to no so that in 10 days he can file a motion to reconsider. Some of the Repubs have indicated they would not filibuster the next vote. Why this is the Repub strategy is beyond me except it means McCain and Graham have 2 more Sundays to go on TV and gripe.

meta, I think they just do it to show they can. They have no power, no respect, no dignity and no common sense. They are outshone and outmaneuvered by the president at every turn. So they have to do whatever little nasty things they can to irritate him and show they have “power” to block something he wants. The are small people and the world knows it.

I’m so tired of the games. These bastards are really undermining the country — threatening our national security and depressing the economy. Their actions gave aid and comfort to the North Koreans just this past Monday. When will they learn?

Excellent tweet, Alycee! It’s people like Hatch, McCain, Graham, etc., that we should be outraged about.

Ryan Grimm says it’s the Presidents fault for not coming out for the filibuster reform before this.
    Fuck you Ryan, Fuck you!

    • February 14, 2025 at 6:13 pm

As I’ve said in other situations and in other contexts: Does Obama have to wipe Dems’ asses? Jeez, you’re adults, fucking HELP him, don’t expect him to do everything on his own.

Ryan GrimmReaper is what I call him…

Does he want the President to be a Senator and the President….? They are pathetic.

Those who tweet should remind Ryan G. that VP Biden is pres of the senate. Also Jay Carney when asked said that they were in support of reform then being proposed by the reformers. Again….people here are selectively ignoring Boxter, Feinstein, Pryor, Baucus and the rest that would not even support the talking filibuster.

McCain had Levin supporting his weak version.

McCain and Fisher from NE said that they were not for Filibustering Hagel. That was just last week. Today, both voted No. Levin must be happy.

Ryan Grimm on REV ALs program just said that Harry Reid could still get Filibuster Reform done

    • 147 Liberal Librarian
      February 14, 2025 at 6:14 pm

Does he say HOW? I mean, 67 votes are 67 votes, which Harry doesn’t have.

        February 14, 2025 at 6:21 pm

Ryan Grim seems a lot less informed than the typical TOD poster.
        Reid blew reform.
        Next opportunity is 2015.

There is ample blame to go around: several Democrtic senators resisted reform on the basis they would lose the senate and then what.
        Weak and dishonest.

We kid ourselves when we think any party works for the people of the USA.

Nope! Because he is full of shit! You can only change rules before first session of new Congress, unless you hold a Vote of 60 votes to change filibuster to a desired number, like 55.
But Ryan does not know, he probably heard it and wants to sound sage! :(

        February 14, 2025 at 6:35 pm

No. Any senate rule can be changed. There is NO rule that said they could not. On the last page I had explained a way it is possible. Bobfr disagrees. I agreed not to be disagreeable. But I know that what I said was right. But Bobfr presented his version. Perhaps both are right….I don’t remember now. The last time that I had read the rules were in the late 1990s.

I lent my Parliamentary rules book out. It was never returned to me. I may now have to make another investment soon.

If it were up to a group of swing voters known as Walmart moms, Congress would pass President Barack Obama’s State of the Union proposals to expand preschool education and enact stricter gun laws.

But they are ambivalent about Obama’s pledge to raise the federal minimum wage, cool on his plan to overhaul immigration and skeptical about the focus on climate change.

These were the broad conclusions from focus groups of so-called Walmart moms conducted Wednesday in Philadelphia and Kansas City. A recording of the discussions was screened Thursday for reporters in Washington.

The Walmart moms, a group first identified by Public Opinion Strategies in 2008 and tracked in the last two elections, backed Obama in 2008, the GOP congressional candidates in 2010 and Obama last year. They are working- and middle-class women who have struggled through the economic downturn, pinched by the rising costs of health care, college, food and gas.

And although they have little faith in Washington, they remain surprisingly hopeful that Congress and the president will work together over the next four years. When asked to rate their level on hope on a scale of one (lowest) to 10 (highest), the average in both groups was about 6.

Among all the issues discussed in the State of the Union, the president’s plan for expanding early childhood education drew the most enthusiastic response from both parties, although they raised concerns on how it would be funded.

They questioned the effectiveness of passing new gun laws, but most of the moms – Democrat and Republican – said Congress should do something.

Who are these “Wal-mart” moms anyway…..are they middle class moms who shop at wal-mart? are they wal-mart workers? because if they are the later then they are not informed enough in my opinion to know that the President is looking out for their interest which they clearly have been voting against because they are “conservative”.

It is stunning but way incomplete. McCain’s resentment is mammoth.
He is still a senator, nothing but a senator. Never will be anything more.
      Kerry is SOS.
      Hagel for DOD?
      Unbearable .

  • If you're going to run any campaign at all about LGBT issues, please don't make the same mistake a lot of them do. Demi, Bi, Ace, and Pansexuals get erased from almost every single one, and it is very disheartening to see that your sexuality is not only erased, but discredited as if it never existed. I struggled to discover my identity for two years because I thought on transexuals, gays, and lesbians were around. Run a campaign that displays those, and you will help more people than you know.
