WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Jacob Lew to be Treasury secretary, affirming President Barack Obama’s choice of a budget expert at a time when Congress and the White House are at odds over sharp government spending cuts.
The vote was 71 to 26 to support the nomination. A total of 25 Republicans and independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont voted against Lew’s confirmation.
Lew, 57, had most recently served as Obama’s chief of staff. He succeeds Timothy Geithner, who completed a tumultuous four-year term in which he helped lead the administration’s response to the financial crisis and recession.
Lew is scheduled to be sworn in on Thursday. He will take over just one day before automatic spending cuts are set to take effect. He’s likely to take part in any negotiations to reverse the cuts, and also in key budget talks next month to continue funding the government.
Someone asked a few days ago if there was anyone keeping track of who has been submitted for confirmation and how long it was taking for them. I found a link.

I think Scalia is one of those right wingers who believe that the Supreme Court rulings in “Scott v. Sanford” (better known as the Dred Scott decision) and “Plessy v. Ferguson” were correctly decided. During the 1870s and early 1880s so called Southern moderates went around the country talking about “the New South” and the need for the federal government to rescind Reconstruction laws that had been enacted to protect the rights of former slaves, including, and especially, the right to vote. Guess what, beginning in the late 1880′s and through the firs decade of the 20th Century, the so called “New South,” which had supposedly changed from the old South of slavery, proceeded to enact Jim Crow laws that pretty much restored slavery without calling it slavery. Beginning in the late 1870′s through the first three decades of the 20th Century, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a series of decisions that rendered both the 14th and 15th Amendments meaningless, gave legal sanction to Southern state laws that discriminated against African Americans. Congress and the Presidents looked the other way.
Although under Reconstruction African American participation in the political process was unprecedented, by the time the twentieth century began it was as if African Americans had never been in the political process. It took the Supreme Court 58 years before reversing the “Plessy” decision, which had given legal sanction to racial discrimination. And, it took 75 years before Congress passed the 1965 Voting Rights Act to do away with State laws that had prevented African Americans from voting and participating in the political process.
It now appears that the conservative dominated U.S. Supreme Court is poised to return the country back to the era of Jim Crow. And, I truly believe that if it was up to Scalia, he probably would want to go back to affirming the Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott case, which plainly said that African Americans could not be citizens of the United states, and therefore “had no rights which Whites were
bound to respect.”

This is for the evening TOD crew. I posted it earlier for the afternoon shift. I’m asking a favor of all you TODdies to vote for my #2 daughter, Kelauni, in a contest sponsored by My Destinations, a travel company. She’s currently teaching English in Spain and this would be another great opportunity for her. To vote you must click on one of the icons in the ‘Vote For This Entry’ box next to her name. Also, if you don’t mind, please share with and ask your friends to vote for her as well. I really appreciate it. Thanks everyone!
Your daughter is beautiful and very talented. I wish her luck in the contest. I went to the page to vote for her, but I’m not on Facebook or Twitter. Is there a way I could vote for her? Thanks.

I have to say I get burned when Dem. Senators and Congress Reps are afraid to hold a Supreme Court Judge accountable and call him out when he attacks basic rights of American citizens as “racial entitlement” . We need to build some momentum of criticism of Scalia and call for his resignation.
Couldn’t agree more Bill. What he said today was utterly shocking, but it seems like being a Supreme Court Justice gives you some kind of golden cloak that exempts you from any criticism - unless you’re a ‘liberal’ judge, of course. Every single Dem Senator and Rep, as you said, should have been enraged by this today and should have spoken out. I’m still struggling to believe it, even though it came from Scalia. One very important reason to read the history of Reconstruction is to remember that racial progress is not a given. Things can go backwards.— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) February 27, 2025
It’s just so facile and obvious, as if it takes someone white like him with such gravitas to explain what discrimination is all about for everyone. We live it every day.
It is obvious, but in light of Scalia’s and a majority of the conservative justices’ arguments today, it does bear repeating. We may live it everyday, but others who do not, noticing and talking about this discrimination is important. It is more voices on the right side of the argument that has moved us forward. We would be better served by focusing more on shunning voices that want to act like everything is now fixed since we have the first African American president (many people believe this). I am always for choosing battles wisely and this tweet by Hayes seems quite tame.
He isn’t being preachy. He’s telling the truth. I just wrote a long article showing the parallels between what happened during Reconstruction and what the Republicans are doing now. Their strategy is quite simply the Mississippi Plan revisited.
By the way, one of the reasons things went backwards for Black people after Reconstruction was the abandonment of Blacks by the so called Progressive Republicans.
The fact that they were killing Blacks and their supporters like they were wild game and running them off of their land probably had a lot to do with that.
Meant to say this isn’t flippant. Obvioulsy, AAs and Latinos and other minorities know the truth of it.. But I think a lot of whites tend to get complacent and think it is all moving in the right direction and will continue to do so.

Bob Woodward called a senior White House official last week to tell him that in a piece in that weekend’s Washington Post, he was going to question President Barack Obama’s account of how sequestration came about - and got a major-league brushback. The Obama aide “yelled at me for about a half hour,” Woodward told us in an hour-long interview yesterday around the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.
Digging into one of his famous folders, Woodward said the tirade was followed by a page-long email from the aide, one of the four or five administration officials most closely involved in the fiscal negotiations with the Hill. “I apologize for raising my voice in our conversation today,” the official typed. “You’re focusing on a few specific trees that give a very wrong impression of the forest. But perhaps we will just not see eye to eye here. … I think you will regret staking out that claim.”
By now Woodward should know what the term "regret" meant. But then his ego hasn't allowed him to see how big an ass he has made of himself.— john miller (@deaconmill) February 28, 2025

Our nation’s modern electric grid is limited in its ability to store excess energy for on-demand power. As a result, electricity must be generated on a constant basis to perfectly match demand.
Grid-scale storage technologies have the potential to shift this dynamic, revolutionizing how our grid uses and distributes energy. Reliable, high-performing storage technologies could provide a considerable amount of power on very short demand, lowering costs to utilities and consumers alike.
These powerful technologies would enable renewable sources of energy – often limited by their intermittency – to be more effectively integrated into the electric grid. Robust grid-scale batteries, for instance, could store energy generated by wind turbines and solar panels, to be deployed when the sun isn’t shining or the wind stops blowing.

Senate confirms Lew as Treasury secretary
By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer
———————————————-
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Jacob Lew to be Treasury secretary, affirming President Barack Obama’s choice of a budget expert at a time when Congress and the White House are at odds over sharp government spending cuts.

Given all of the foolish that Antonin Scalia has spouted today, I feel the need to post this ‘oldie, but goodie’ from Jay Smooth’s Ill Doctrine.
How To Tell People They Sound Racist
PERFECT! Tweeted it! Thanks ison!!
PBO: “Now if we can get the press out of the way….”
SERIOUSLY.
Great tweet, Bill R! Before them in 1963, Medgar Evers, a champion of voting rights, was murdered in Mississippi. And, in 1965, during the Selma-to-Montgomery March for voting rights, three other people lost their lives: Jimmie Lee Jackson(yesterday, Feb 26, was the 48th anniversary of his death), Rev. James J. Reeb and Viola Liuzzo. We must pledge never to forget people, both Black and White, who were murdered because they believed in the right to vote for all people.
Thank you Chips for posting the video!!
#FORWARD
Thank YOU for the link Bob, incredibly powerful from Rep Lewis.
Ye it is…and so is the commentary form REV AL…i had to stand up and cheer!!…and when Rep Lewis said…
WE WON’T GO BACK!…. i said…RIGHT ON! RIGHT ON!
Yes Indeed! He is a living witness! Thanks to both you and Bob for sharing this with us! As George Santayana said: “those who forget history are bound to repeat it.”
This is so important—-drs. group speak out on gun violence, spokesman a dr. working the emergency room the day of the Newtown massacre, say they need to talk to their patients about the risk of guns just as they would talk to them about other health risks. They see more damage from gun violence than any other health hazard—-ask the drs who work the emergency rooms any Fri. and Sat. night in any big city hospital—-and more and more—-any night in any hospital.
I was replying to Chip’s post on the other thread, when this one popped up. My last post was close to the end of the last thread, so if you don’t mind, I’m re-posting it here. I’ll be missing the 8:00 live feed and PBO tonight, but I gotta go. See yous in the a.m.
Here’s the post from the last thread:
This is for the evening TOD crew. I posted it earlier for the afternoon shift. I’m asking a favor of all you TODdies to vote for my #2 daughter, Kelauni, in a contest sponsored by My Destinations, a travel company. She’s currently teaching English in Spain and this would be another great opportunity for her. To vote you must click on one of the icons in the ‘Vote For This Entry’ box next to her name. Also, if you don’t mind, please share with and ask your friends to vote for her as well. I really appreciate it. Thanks everyone!

Beautiful, intelligent, talented - nicely done, cookemom!
thanks a bunch maryl1
voted via twitter. good luck to her.
Thank you so much amk, ‘preciate it.
The least on could do.
Your daughter is beautiful and very talented. I wish her luck in the contest. I went to the page to vote for her, but I’m not on Facebook or Twitter. Is there a way I could vote for her? Thanks.
Thank you sjterrid, that’s a good question about non-social media voting. I’ll have to check on that. Thanks again for your kind words
I am so touched by Rosa Park’s statue. She looks so proud and strong-like a queen, Look at that beautiful face, the sturdy shoes that carried her through her long work days, that sensible hat-I love her.
Putting the ‘well regulated’ back in the 2nd Amendment.
A few more common sense recommendations for Senator Leahy to ponder.
We need way more than background checks and an assault weapons ban as you all know. The core of these recommendations is that training, license and insurance all entail positive, sustaining economic incentives for States & the private sector while not tampering with the ability of a person to fire a gun as well as own one.
Yes We Can
excellent, bob. so clear and so right! mahalo nui loa~
He’s comfortable coming out with this bile, because he knows he can say what he damn well likes.
THIS
Roberts was confirmed in 2005. The ballot halt was done by Scalia when Rehnquist was the Chief Justice.
Correct! Thanks, Nena.
If I am not mistaken, John Roberts was one of the lawyers advising the Bush team during the recount!
Scalia is a perfect example of why the one branch which definitely merits term limits is the judicial branch.
Just to take away the bad Scalia taste…

Thank you…….I needed that (tearing up with tears of joy).
Yes, I was feeling pretty battered myself. I’m glad it helped.
Man it was really sad to see the father of the kid killed in Newtown with his portrait of him and his son at the hearing.
I know it may be sexist, but there is still just something powerful about a man crying in full view of anyone other than family.
The sight of my uncles at the funeral of my grandmother after Katrina, with red eyes and tears. still affects me today.
I know what you mean Lamh, no more painful sight. On the rare occasion I saw my Dad cry, it had an incredibly powerful impact, especially because he came from a ‘boys don’t cry’ generation.
Sent you a DM madam!
Dudette? What am I missing? Why have you gone green on Twitter? Is that a geeky thing?
I’m following Tally’s lead in solidarity with the special effects artists from Life of Pi who got screwed!

Speaking of evil people…..This may be a Mubarak situation, but seems a little more credible.
Chavez is not evil people. Not by any stretch of imagination.
And msm has declared him dead many times before. So I wouldn’t trust them, especially teann.
Exactly why is Hugo Chavez an evil person?
Any confirmation??
None yet…..
Nothing on the Beeb yet.
They’ve said he’s died over and over again previously. Soooo….I’m going to wait for official confirmation.
True enough.
… and there’s this:
http://www.voanews.com/content/most-venezuelans-think-chavez-will-recover/1612009.html
Although if true, the Bolivarian revolution won’t long outlive him. No one has his charisma, and he prepared no successor.
That’s the worry LL. He was far from perfect, but I think he was (is?), at heart, a good man trying to help his people.
He is a good man, in my books.
Let’s hope the VRA is allowed to stay in place. Sure would make winning in 2014 a lot more likely.
With OFA moving into full gear and everyone aware of the suppressive efforts of the GOP I predict we will see registration and turnout in 2014 like we’ve never seen in a mid-term election.
Yes We Can
I Trust President Obama to have a Backup Plan…A…..B…&….Z!
Boner told chuck Todd because of gerrymandering, the Republicans are certain of 219 house members in 2014.
He said the deems could probably puck up 15 seats if they put the resources into them.
A strange comment!
If Boner is saying that he’ll have only 219 seats, then you can bet your ass he’s scared shitless that the GOP is about to be swept away.
Jovie, remember the “Boner” can’t count for shit…..
Did he really DIRECTLY referred to “gerrymandering” ?? Or is this your “traduction”, Jovie ?
Everyone better not pull the lethargic crap from ’10, need just 17 House seats and to protect these Senators.
OK, I don’t watch Chris Hayes and I don’t really care to. But this kind of white mansplaining disgusts me:
Why would he say something so Flippant?
Maybe I am missing something. Why is this flippant?
It’s just so facile and obvious, as if it takes someone white like him with such gravitas to explain what discrimination is all about for everyone. We live it every day.
yup. preachy white dood essplaining racial things. How many seconds did he think about racism before he tweeted it?
OMG, I can’t even go there!
He probably gets his hero Greenwald to write his tweets for him, or at least get approval first. He’s a dick.
“He isn’t being preachy. He’s telling the truth.” I agree with you, FayPax. I normally can’t stand Chris Hayes
By the way, one of the reasons things went backwards for Black people after Reconstruction was the abandonment of Blacks by the so called Progressive Republicans.
The fact that they were killing Blacks and their supporters like they were wild game and running them off of their land probably had a lot to do with that.
That is flippant. It is reality.
Meant to say this isn’t flippant. Obvioulsy, AAs and Latinos and other minorities know the truth of it.. But I think a lot of whites tend to get complacent and think it is all moving in the right direction and will continue to do so.
Very well said, Japa!
After the Civil War and the end of slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation was passed…..within 10 yrs, thins went back wards, KKK, Jim Crow, organized lynching, etc.
Meta, I think in this case Chris Hayes is absolutely spot-on!

Battered wife syndrome? Get public so fed up with government that they don’t care about benefits anymore.
FYI y’all…
Congressman John Lewis will be on Rachel’s show tonight.
Here is a link to Rep. Lewis’ appearance on Colbert Report last June, when Colbert told Rep. Lewis that Stephen attended MLK’s “I Have a Dream” 1963 speech in his mother’s womb. Rep. Lewis looked genuinely touched.

Rosa Park’s statue is gorgeous. . . adding to my list of sites to see on my next (soon) trip to DC.
Me too PJ! I hope to go this summer.
I heard that - summer, eh? Hmmmm. And PJ saying ‘soon’ - hmmmm. I dream of visiting the WH, something that wasn’t feasible on my one and only WDC visit in January. Hmmmm.
OK there’s been a lot news/events today.. But this cannot be overlooked, at Gun hearing L.Graham get his ass tore in half by Police Chief
This is how you handle SOB’s Graham/McCain, Milwaukee police chief Lynn. ” We dont go after paper cases,We go after GUNS!!”
Graham is such a dummy. It isn’t a crime to fail a background check, it is a crime to sell a gun to a person that fails a background check.
Woodward is a cretin.

…”round the Georgetown dining room table where so many generations of Washington’s powerful have spilled their secrets.”
And that is the extent of it.
I like your new avatar…smilin
Ironic that on the day Ms Park is honored, the rw supremes are leaning towards gutting VRA. Is america trending towards apartheid south africa ?
wow…amk
NO…as Rep Lewis said…WE WILL NOT GO BACK!
FLUIDIC: Metal Air Recharged from DOE ARPA-E on Vimeo.

To those of us incensed at Scalia and the conservatives on the Court in regards to the VRA, read Deaniac’s new post: http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2013/02/the-coming-backlash-to-destroy.html
I need to read something, LL. I feel the dagger John Lewis referenced in my very soul. Off to read DEANIAC.
Kerry wows Parisian reporters by speaking French

cue collective explosion of wingnutz’ heads.
Oh they’re already hot, because he said something to the effect that Americans have “the right to be stupid” in his speech in Germany as he was discussing the concept of free speech. See #johnkerry in Twitter. I didn’t hear that speech. But he’s right. That’s why we have such a crappy Congress now, because we let stupid people have a voice.
I assume the DM from 1/2 hour ago…….well I’ll just chalk it up to….NM LOL!………I feel naked and neglected?
Love Juanita Jean. The World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon.
Dear God, this may be asking for too much; but could you make a way here to a situation in which PBO replaces Scalia with a person of color or a woman?
The one caveat/condition to accompany such a replacement is that Scalia be alive and of sane mind to see this new PBO-nominated Associate Justice, be confrimed and take this hater’s spot
amen.
The color or gender of the person does not matter - it’s their ideology. Clarence Thomas is a “person of color” but he is no different from Scalia.
Exactly, hopefruit2! I would take a white male nominee in the mold of a John Paul Stevens any time over any right wing woman or any right wing “person of color” in the mold of Clarence Thomas.
amen
Yes We Know
Great toon and tweet.
Ha! #boehnerquester
Ladies and gentleman I propose a Woodward ban through the weekend. He makes my blood pressure go to unhealthy levels!!!
I don’t mind a bit because Bob Woodward is sounding and acting like Sean Hannity. He belongs on the Hannity and Limbaugh hate shows. What infuriates me is when the MSM presents him as a credible journalist.
Here we go.
UT……….I think we have hacked each others twitter feeds of lately!!! Here’s something more soothing. Plus Colbert at nite.
There ya go. That says it all about this repub shill.
That explains a lot. He is getting worse day by day.
Beginning of the end when Fox News wants them - he is failing UT
Now the F****R is leaking who sent the email. Gene Sperling my favorite admin soldier as of now….
LOL. This dude/dudette is always funny. Does anyone know the twitter handle of that way-past-sell-by-date bw gossip monger?
Chat away:
http://theobamadiary.com/2013/02/27/chat-away-122/
My brain is exhausted from a long day and trying to catch up on all the news of the day…..is it possible that Scalia really wants to be Pope? I hear there’s an opening at the Vatican….I think he may be more suited for that! I hope that man rots in hell.He makes a mockery of the laws and values of this country.
bob woodward is still alive!?!? wow.
He is still alive physically, but I am not so sure if he is still alive mentally.
Why are so many of these beltway types (e.g. woodward) trying to make themselves the story instead of the policy under discussion??
The White House needs to ignore them & their tantrums and let us oridnary folks go after them.
May be some ppl have forgotten the fact that from the moment PBO was re-elected many started speculating how PBO’s second term will be involved in “scandals” based on the track record of prior POTUS.
I had this hope for a scandal from so many the media that all these recent personal attacks are making me suspect that they are many hoping to be the ones that take PBO down - may be I am just lacking the trust of MSM
Based on the eagerness of the status quo to destroy PBO’s Presidency, I hope those in Team Obama hanker down & prove them wrong
Hello global, and TOD. Have no time but to lurk anymore, but your comment about taking down PBO- THAT IS EXACTLY what they are attempting. Couldn’t stop him from a second term- they are damn fucked up about it, actually, so the devils are salivating over any thing to kill this uppity black man, figuratively if not literally. The present climate on the court and the congress- neither of which deserve my capitalization- exhibits the rabid hatred they feel for this travesty known to them as a President Barack Hussein Obama. How dare he think he can run Amerikkka. Okay, I’m out.
Nite all. Be blessed.
this agenda is very clear - read or listen to the transcripts immediately following PBO’s re-election
