****

Okay, finally getting around to replying to the very terrific TODers who’ve contacted me the last couple of days about helping out with the blog. I went out for a few hours today and when I came back there were another a bunch of offers - completely overwhelming, thank you sooooooo much.

It’ll probably take a day or two to reply to and thank everyone, but I’ll get there.

Thanks again everyone, talk soon.

Obama: ‘My Goal Is Not To Chase A Balanced Budget’

// President Obama rejected the Republican Party’s calls for a balanced budget, saying it would require slashing entitlements, during an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) released his budget proposal Tuesday, which aims to balance the budget in 10 years.

“My goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance,” Obama said. “My goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work, and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue.”//

    http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/obama-my-goal-is-not-to-chase-balanced

I actually saw this part of the interview on ABC world news, so I know it’s accurate reporting.

Exactly. A federal government’s budget isn’t like a household budget and it needs a delicate approach so the most vulnerable aren’t hurt.

        March 12, 2025 at 8:25 pm

I do see a resemblance to a household budget ut - When my babe was young - and we were a 1 income family - we had some serious debt. Interest rates were high & I remember paying off the minimum payment on a credit card. But - the babe grew - we became a 2 income family - interest rates fell - the mortgage got paid - we got through college - and suddenly we were living on debit - not credit. We could even save for retirement!

I see that the current time is NOT the time for debit living - get the people working, get the economy growing and the balance will take care of itself. That the markets are so high - and still the majority are so poor/in debt - with low interest rates - shows just how the few have screwed the many. What Ryan wants to do - is screw them until they are dead.

even a household budget doesn’t get balanced by cutting off food for granny.

imagine the lyin’ ryan family around the dinner table, worrying over the bills. :)

wife: the budget isn’t working, paul, because the kids have already given up their allowance, granny is down to eating cat food, and i’m having to resort to using two aspirins between the knees for birth control, but you just keep spending all the income you receive on yourself and your rich buddies.

lyin’: you want me to pay for the kids’ food and clothing? and granny’s meals on wheels? and your medical care? that’s redistribution!! no, you’ll just have to work harder and stop this dependency!

every budget, whether government or individual, has to begin with an honest assessment of values- for some the most important thing is caring for the children, the elderly, the fabric of the community. for others, what’s essential is a car elevator and big walls around the estate. follow the money, whether it’s federal or personal.

        March 12, 2025 at 11:46 pm

You make a good point, UT! But even a household budget is never completely in balance. Using my self as an example: I owe money on my mortgage, my car, and a very large medical bill. There is no way I could have afforded them without taking on loans, which I have to pay on installment. Businesses also go in debt by borrowing money to invest in their businesses. People like Ryan want to do away with the role that government plays in “promoting the general welfare.” Ryan, Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and all the tea baggers had no qualms supporting Bush’s wars that greatly contributed to the debt and deficit. They had no qualms when St. Ronie run up the debt and deficit, because at the time we were told by the advocates of “supply side” economics that deficits do not matter. Their current obsession with the debt and deficits is dishonest. It has nothing to do with debt and deficits. Rather, it’s all about reducing the size of the federal government so that it may be “drowned in a bathtub.”

So Paul Ryan, the loser of the 2012 election said that they are not going to give up in what they believe, even though they lost. So is the loser saying that the guy who won the 2012 election should give up what he believe just to make a deal with a bunch of losers who want it all there way or no way.

I believe that PBO’s so called charmed offensive will not work with these people. Ryan reintroduced the same budget the people already rejected. Even doubled down on it. PBO doesn’t have anyone to work with. I am so disgusted with the lot of them.

Suzanne-good line..”every budget, whether government or individual, has to begin with an honest assessment of values.” On November 6, voters in overwhelming numbers chose which values they prefer. The were not Paul Ryan’s.

Ok, need to vent, since you’re my internet family.

One of our cats got spooked, because he’s an idiot, and scratched the missus’ leg last night. This morning it was seeping. Her legs can get infected with cellulitis, so this can be major. She had an appointment for the doctor anyway, so he looked at her leg. Told her it wasn’t infected, but, WOULDN’T GIVE HER PROPHYLACTIC ANTIBIOTICS! He told her to put antiseptic cream on it 3 times a day. However, if it gets infected, the surgery will have to be delayed. WE.ARE.TEARING.OUR.HAIR.OUT. (Which, granted, isn’t much for me, being bald.) She’s stressed with work, I’m stressed for her. I need to beat on something. So if I lurk more than anything for the next few days, that’s why.

Antibiotics will weaken the immune system temporarily, so taking prior to surgery not great idea unless last resort. I don’t know the depth of the cut but Neosporin should suffice. If you do get to the stage of antibiotics make sure you don’t get prescribed this Zithromax. FDA put out report today saying can lead to heart failure http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-fda-says-zithromax-can-cause-fatal-irregular-heart-beat-20130312,0,781851.story

I’m sorry that your wife was scratched by your cat, and this might delay her surgery. Did the doctor say why he couldn’t give the antibiotics, is it because it might interact with the medicine given to her for the surgery? I’m sure you are both stressed out about having the surgery, you didn’t need this complication. You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers while she goes through this, and hope for a successful surgery and quick recovery.

you’re doing the heroic work of caring for and worrying for your beloved, as she approaches her surgery. my husband has been in that role several times, and i’ve been there for him too. so i say from experience: it sucks.

prayer really does help, regardless of who/what you believe in-it shifts your focus from beyond the particular (cat scratch/infection) to the eternal (love/devotion). and it gives your mind something positive to do. counting your blessings is always good, and calming. some just watch their breathing, or focus on a pleasing thought.

you’ll get through this lib! and she’s in excellent hands-you’ve seen to that. better days ahead, for sure. <3

President Obama to Democrats: Entitlements may have to change

    http://www.politico.com/story/2013/03/president-obama-hits-the-hill-88757.html?hp=t3_3

President Barack Obama told Senate Democrats on Tuesday that his budget to be released in April would align closely with their priorities.

The president made the case, senators attending the luncheon said, to protect entitlements for future generations…But President Obama acknowledged that Social Security and Medicare — big drivers of federal spending — wouldn’t survive without some changes to save money.

Earlier today I had brought up using the twitter hash tag #GOPspeak. There was some discussion and VC came up with the suggestion that the tweets would need to serve two purposes. One is to present something negative about the GOP but at the same time highlight and emphasize a positive about PBO or the Democrats. Below are 3 I came up with.

Give thoughts, suggestions for others, or use the hash tag and tweet your own.

I muted immediately. While muted, I saw swbluega’s comment regarding PO saying his budget would closely align with Dem’s priorities, but that SS and Medicare must be reformed in order for them to be viable in future years. Do people not get there is a big difference in “cutting” and in “reforming”/making the Big 3 more efficient and effective long term? I don’t get all the hand-wringing. PO is NOT going to agree to anything that CUTS and hurts people.

That is my feeling. I want these benefits to be available for me as well as my children. Some type of reform will have to take place in order for that to happen. Change doesn’t have to be a negative thing.

Tnmtgirl, some people who pay attention and actually get the differences in word meanings will understand and appreciate what the president is saying. Some will use this statement as a reason for outrage and start stupidly screaming about being “sold out”; then there are the Repubs who will interpret this sensible inch as a reason to assume they can get a mile.

          • March 13, 2025 at 11:24 pm

The problem is many people use the word “reform” to mean “pillage”. Gov. Snyder (Michigan) for instance, talks about education ‘reform’ - by which he means taking tax payer money to give to his big business cronies through tax breaks and charter schools with complete disregard for any educational outcomes. I used to assume a positive, progressive meaning to the word, but I’ve heard too many Republicans ‘reforming’ things by destroying them. I DO NOT mean to suggest President Obama means it in this way, just that the word has become somewhat corrupted, I think. I trust President Obama to have our best interests at heart.

      • 115 carolyn
        March 12, 2025 at 8:34 pm

Ed needs to read or listen to what the President said in his interview on ABC tonight. He said he is not chasing a balanced budget because of what that would necessitate: cuts to Medicare, Medicare, Soc Sec….and that won’t happen. I contend every time they get on their soapboxes, they never actually listen to what the president says. They hear scraps, and determine what he means. I don’t understand “chained CPI” but that isn’t law yet, and there is a LONG time between talk and law. I do not believe this president, who was willing to risk his entire presidency on the health care law, is willing to throw away or weaken Medicare or Soc Security. It just doesn’t fit, and if there’s one thing we know about this man, he is consistent.

      • 123 anniebella
        March 12, 2025 at 8:56 pm

I think before Democrats, Sen. Sanders, have a dam fit we should see what the President is talking about. It seem the minute it is brought up that the President says that we must do something to improve Medicare and Social Security so that it will be around for future generations, the Democrats start thinking that the President is going to cave, or let the Republicans have their way about entitlements. I believe the President will look out for the safety net for the poor and middle class. And I am so darn sick of Ed bringing Sen. Sanders on his show to talk down President Obama. I have not forgotten the 2010 mid term election, you know were Ed suggest the PL stay home and not vote. Leading to the Tea Republican Racists Party to take control of the House.

I trust President Obama to do the right thing. I believe he honestly care for the poor and middle class, he want them to have a chance to better their lives. When I said I voted for President Obama twice there were many reasons I voted for him, and it wasn’t because I thought he was cute, or he was black, he was a good speaker, ( he was all that), but I listen to what he said, I saw how he interact with the people, I came away feeling, believing that he meant what he said, that he really do care about we the people. He really want those who never had a fair chance to get that fair chance.

    Eric’s Train Ride

After a very busy day, a commuter settled down in her seat and closed her eyes as the train departed Montreal for Hudson.
As the train rolled out of the station, the guy sitting next to her pulled
out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice: “Hi sweetheart it’s
Eric, I’m on the train – Yes, I know it’s the Six thirty and not the Four
thirty but I had a long meeting – No, honey, not with that floozie from the
accounts office, with the Boss. No Sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life
Yes, I’m sure, cross my heart” etc., etc.
Fifteen minutes later, he was still talking loudly, when the young woman
sitting next to him, who was obviously upset & angered by his continuous diatribe, yelled at the top of her voice: ”Hey, Eric, turn that stupid phone off and come back to bed!”

Eric doesn’t use his cell phone in public any longer.

ILove it! Thanks, CarolMaeWY. But I have one that is true and that happened 2 weeks ago.

I live in NYC and ride the subway back and forth. I left work during rush hour, ran to the subway stop to catch the train. When it arrived, it was full, and I sighed because I needed a seat badly. I could not believe that while there were many riders standing, there was one free seat at the corner of the long-seven-person seat. Hesitantly, I approached it all the while thanking why it was vacant. Since I was extremely tired, I sat down timidly. Before long, I realized why the seat was up for grab in a car packed with people standing and clinging to the poles and whatever else they found. A guy who was standing by the seat corner was holding up with both hands the straps. He was drunk to the point that he kept on bending slowly until his head, or his chest would rest on me had I not moved forward or to my left depending on where he was landing.

I looked across; the woman sitting there was smiling. The one on my left said with a bit or sarcasm, This is why no one sat there!

      I did not move.

At the next stop, as the doors opened and people rushed out and others were about to enter the train, I said very loud to the man dangling from one of the holding strap: Sir, this is your stop. This is your stop!

The man woke up and jumped out. The doors closed behind him and departed the station. People that were already on the train broke into a good laugh. My neighbor to the left who was observing my swinging back and forth, or westward at times trying vehemently not to touch her said: How do you know this was his stop? I replied: I don’t. Neither does he! I wanted him off from me, and that’s what I got.

In other words, Little Ezra thinks PBO should just allow the Republicans and their friends in the media to spread lies, draw false equivalences and keep the American people uninformed of the facts. Klein is using GOP talking points when he describes the President as “polarizing” simply because he circumvents the media and lets the people know who is working on their behalf and who isn’t.

During the first term they constantly bashed him because he did not use the “bully pulpit.” Now that he has decided to use the “bully pulpit” they are now accusing him of “polarizing.” Is “Little Ezra” suffering from Romnesia? Has he forgotten that the Republicans have been robotic in saying NO to the agenda that the president campaigned on and won?

From the last thread - some truth and humor from Pierce

” It has blinded him [Ryan] to the very real human effects of what would occur if his “budget” ever was adopted, it also has blinded him to his own staggering hypocrisy — a man seeking to demolish the very safety net that got him through high-school and college, a man talking about the perils of government who’s never had a real job outside of it.”

And the media continue their false equivalency of “both sides do it” or they willfully ignore the fact that GOP candidates/office holders are only capable of thinking like a white male. They are clueless about women and nonwhites, and media prop these unqualified representatives because they are desperately deluding themselves that the GOP is not a sinking ship.

Someone here helped explain to me why Sandra Fluke = slut in Rush Limbaugh’s mind. He thinks women’s contraception works likes men (need 1 for every “event,” so sluts obviously spend more on birth control than other women.

Scarily, the GOP base believe Rush.

Oh shit! NOW what will those teabaggers say?

    http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/13/who-benefits-from-the-safety-net/

Another finding of the study is that the distribution of benefits no longer aligns with the demography of poverty. African-Americans, who make up 22 percent of the poor, receive 14 percent of government benefits, close to their 12 percent population share.

White non-Hispanics, who make up 42 percent of the poor, receive 69 percent of government benefits – again, much closer to their 64 percent population share.

    • 146 nathkatun7
      March 13, 2025 at 1:01 am

I still see major disparity between the white poor and the African American (AA) poor! AA make up 22% of the poor yet they only receive 14% of govt. benefits. On the hand, whites who make up 42% of the poor receive 69% of govt. benefits. As far as I am concerned, AA, who make up 22% of the poor, should be receiving 22% of govt. benefits, and whites, who make up 42% of the poor, should be receiving 42% of the govt. benefits. I just don’t understand why benefits to the poor should be based on a group’s share of the population and not the group’s share of poverty. It seems to me that even in the distribution of govt. benefits, race still matters.

If it is done right, the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) may well promise uninsured Americans a lot more than cheap, reliable medical care. It can also open the door to the democratic empowerment of millions of poor people, who are often alienated from much of the nation’s civic life, by strengthening the organizations that give them a voice.

This year more than 30 million uninsured Americans are to begin signing up for Obamacare, but the vast majority of those eligible for either the expanded Medicaid program, or for subsidized private health insurance through state health exchanges, have no idea how to enroll. Surveys and focus groups have found that up to three-quarters of Americans who might directly benefit from the program are skeptical that the law can provide high-quality insurance coverage at a price they can afford.

It will be all over Twitter, blogs, shortly after the revelation. I’m not giving Ed the satisfaction or ratings after his nasty attitude towards our President this evening.

And contrary to popular belief, it was not the 47% video that gave PBO a victory - it was the back-breaking organization and leg work of OFA employees and volunteers, and ordinary and non-ordinary PBO supporters who took the time to disseminate accurate info on the blogs, Twitter, word-of-mouth, and donated in anyway they could, and most importantly, the voters, young old, rich poor, male, female, of every race color and creed who withstood extra extra long lines, weather, MSM false propaganda and submliminal messages that they are “unenthusiastic” or “unlikely” voters.

Thanks for you kind words, Nath. I’m tired of people trying to take credit themselves, or give every tangential person or event credit for his victory. Had he lost they would all blame him 100% and say it was his “terrible performance” in the first debate that cost him the election.

In my zeal to include all the wonderful work of OFA and other volunteers/supporters, I also forgot to mention PBO himself, FLOTUS, and his extraordinary campaign team (Messina, Cutter, Axelrod, Biden, etc) who lay at the core of his victory (but I guess that goes without saying)! :) :)
