[Continuing my RIP Chinua Achebe from comment at end of previous post]:

[…..] Achebe won the Commonwealth poetry prize for his collection Christmas in Biafra, was a finalist for the 1987 Booker prize for his novel Anthills of the Savannah, and in 2007 won the Man Booker international prize. Chair of the judges on that occasion, Elaine Showalter, said he had “inaugurated the modern African novel”, while her fellow judge, the South African Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, said his fiction was “an original synthesis of the psychological novel, the Joycean stream of consciousness, the postmodern breaking of sequence”, and that Achebe was “a joy and an illumination to read”.

Nelson Mandela, meanwhile, has said that Achebe “brought Africa to the rest of the world” and called him “the writer in whose company the prison walls came down”. […..]

What is the Paper that Sheldon Adlerson(sp) owns in Israel? It could not be Haaretz or Jerusalem Post. So why the disconnection with pres Obama in Israel?

The nation of Israel is a sophisticated nation. It is modern. It has other ways that information is delivered to them. So why ‘am I hearing how they now love/like president Obama? They are not low information populace as close to half of our fellow citizens here in USA. So I don’t really get the disconnect. This president has Never done anything wrong against Israel. This POTUS has increased their foreign aid and military aid. So what ‘am I missing?

Nailed it. Where, I wonder, are the adults?

I was watching Martin Bashir yesterday and he had on a professor who claims PBO gave up on the peace talks in the Mid East, I wondered if he thought the same thing when other POTUS’s semi-tried, or did he expect PBO to work “their miracles” for them. Why can’t they get their own shit together instead of looking for other people to solve their problems?

As for the Syrians, why are they looking to the USA to arm them etc,? why not the rest of the world? I don’t get it.

He owns the Israeli daily newspaper Israel HaYom. You are not missing much, but what happens is a narrative gets built, starting in the US and then like lemmings everyone else follows. In Israel, when you have had a RW GOV you do not go against the grain, for fear of losing access. Same story different continent.

Sheldon Adelson owns Yom Tov which I think means good day. It is like Rupert Murdoch’s newspapers, propaganda for the 1%.

The Israeli people, especially the young ones, are very different from us because all of them have to serve in the military. They are forced to confront reality daily and the endless war is all around them. The endless war over which they have no control and which makes the Sheldon Adelsons and weapons manufaturers wealthy.

Nothing like our young people plugged into constant entertainment.

Winning them over with a message that they can hope for a more normal life is what POTUS did. That’s a bell that Yom Tov and right wing hawks can’t unring.

I think they are just throwing out snippets about the Pres and visuals help to show his ‘real’ side, Hf. They’d hardly be able to come up with lots of in-Jordan pics. Or maybe they use hashtags in a slightly different way - kind of like #Obama (the man who is) in Jordan (right now). Yeah, yeah, Hopefruit, two stupid explanations. Congress continues to waste time instead of doing their job.

    ======
“The 39th time was not the charm on Obamacare repeal”
    By Steve Benen

    http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2013/03/22/17416993-the-39th-time-was-not-the-charm-on-obamacare-repeal?lite

    ————-

The Senate on Friday rejected another GOP attempt to repeal President Obama’s healthcare law.

An amendment to the Senate budget resolution from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) failed on a 45-54 vote on Friday. Cruz’s amendment would have repealed the Affordable Care Act and encouraged patient-centered reforms to reduce costs.

Senate Republicans knew Cruz’s amendment was pointless, and knew it wouldn’t pass, but literally every GOP senator voted for it anyway — just because.

At this point, some of you may be wondering, “Exactly how many Obamacare repeal votes are we up to now?” By one estimate, the new total is 39 times.

…this new Congress has only been in session for two months. At least in theory, members of both parties should be hard at work at, you know, governing. There are all kinds of problems in need of policymakers’ attention, and pointless vanity exercises about repealing a law that isn’t going anywhere may make Republicans feel warm inside, but they’re clearly not serious.

There is a certain irony underscoring recent events. To listen to Republican rhetoric on Capitol Hill is to hear a series of complaints about President Obama: he’s not being “serious” enough about getting things done; he’s too focused on electoral considerations; he’s not “leading” in a way the far-right finds satisfactory; he’s reaching out to his rivals on the other side of the aisle but he doesn’t really mean it.

But it’s against this backdrop that Republicans vote, over and over again, to repeal a health care law they know won’t be repealed…keep this in mind the next time we hear whining about the White House not being “serious” enough about constructive policymaking?

The importance of Netanyahu’s surprising apology

President Obama’s trip to the Middle East appears to have already produced a significant diplomatic breakthrough that few saw coming.

But the fact that Obama’s leadership helped broker this diplomacy is encouraging. As Noga Tarnopolsky noted, it’s “no small thing to convince Israel to apologize for military activity.”

He inspires me to do a mirror check and call me out before I call out someone else. How dare I not encourage someone?

Parents worry about their children. I get that. PBO is No Child. Other that Maya and now his family, he is alone. But he had great roots. He has accomplished a lot. No one is perfect. This POTUS would first to state so.

In pres Obama I trust. Some anxiety and fear would slowly melt away if really some would just have the faith and Trust pres Obama.

At some point you’d think the MSM would learn that, though it may have been the case in the past, they cannot create the story; especially when it comes to President Obama.

During the 2012 campaign, their story was that Romney would win. It did not happen.

On this trip, their story was about how disliked the President is in Israel and how terrible this trip was going to go. It did not happen. Mr. Todd even set out to remind the Israelis that they are not supposed to like President Obama by throwing out the negative questions during the press conference. It didn’t work.

So, rather than report on the successes of the President’s trip – which for other presidents would have gotten 24/7 coverage – they decided to TRY to make it a non-story. That’s not working either because, contrary to their belief, they are not the only source of information. Thank goodness, there are other sources that are more reliable and that are not trying to create a story to suit their purpose.

“NRA-Driven Gun Provisions Pass Along With Spending Bill”

      by Tamara Keith

      http://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2013/03/21/174969923/nra-driven-gun-provisions-pass-along-with-spending-bill

The House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to approve a temporary measure to keep the government funded through the end of September. Government shutdown averted.

But it turns out the continuing resolution didn’t just address spending. It contains six measures that limit how federal agencies deal with guns.

The continuing resolution makes four of these riders permanent.

One rider prevents the Department of Justice from requiring gun dealers to conduct an inventory to see if guns are lost or stolen. Another requires the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to make it clear that any data from criminal traces on guns can’t be used to draw broad conclusions about firearms-related crime.

Although it would create chaos for many, I wish the President would veto the CRA and tell them to either override the veto or send back a clean bill for sig.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama withdrew his nomination of Caitlin Halligan to a federal appeals court Friday, conceding to Republicans in the Senate who twice blocked his pick for the key judicial post.

Calling the obstruction by Republicans unjustified and unacceptable, Obama said he was pulling Halligan’s name from consideration even though he believed she would have served with distinction on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

“I am deeply disappointed that even after nearly two and a half years, a minority of senators continued to block a simple up-or-down vote on her nomination,” Obama said in a statement the White House issued while he was traveling in Jordan.

Senate Republicans blocked Halligan’s confirmation for a second time in early March, arguing that Halligan is too liberal and citing her work on lawsuits against gun manufacturers and on behalf of illegal immigrants. A majority of senators, 51, supported Halligan’s nomination, but Democrats needed 60 votes in the 100-member Senate to get it past Republican objections.

Democrats have accused the GOP of trying to maintain a conservative majority on a key appellate court.

Martin bashir right out of the gate is voicing criticism of PBO because he “hasn’t done enough on Syria.”
Maybe he will get to the spectacular success of trip to Israel and the peace made between Israel and Turkey.
    Maybe.
But first segment has on a demented hawk calling for arming Syrian rebels. off to war we go. F-k that.

Martin is an enemy like all the rest of them. He must be under deep threat. Don’t we all recall admiration of POTUS?

Rev. Al is the only reliable supporter of PBO on MSNBC. I do not understand their agenda.

        March 22, 2025 at 4:39 pm

I think we both understand their agenda but it is too terrifying to contemplate, let alone write about.

        March 22, 2025 at 9:19 pm

Martin did not speak positively about Michelle Bachman. I have always seen Bashir as an adamant PBO supporter. His background may have him favoring specific actions concerning the Arab world. No one is 100% in support with everything someone does or does not do.

    • 136 dotster3
      March 22, 2025 at 5:27 pm

I missed that, but I’m going to defend Bashir. He was the ONLY one on msnbc for many moons who was consistently supportive of President Obama (before Rev. Al)—-and the only one who had the courage to tell uncomfortable truths about Romney (and all the Repub candidates before his nomination)—-when all others seemed to be cheering for a toss up election or a Romney win —-and the only one consistently critical of the Repub agenda and obstruction and their utter ridiculousness. I don’t mind an occasional authentic difference of opinion —-I would guess most people are not in total agreement with President Obama on everything, on every detail.

      • 137 Vicki
        March 22, 2025 at 5:48 pm

dotster, we agree that Martin was consistently supportive, ” was” being the important word. Lately he does GOP news and views. Sure sometimes he laughs at them but still GOP is the story he is choosing to cover.

Today the big story actually is triumph in the middle east. Peace moves between Netanyahu & Erdogan. PBO cheered in Israel.

And Martin is kvetching about doing enough for Syria. Emphasis is distorted. Don’t you think it is fair to judge a news program by what it covers and what it ignores?

      • 138 Bill
        March 22, 2025 at 6:05 pm

Martin must realize the MSM is extremely negative towards PBO. Unless Martin is under pressure from his producers to be critical of PBO one would think he has the ability to avoid negative segments. His piece on Syria was hardly breaking new ground. It was the same old neocon war mongering. With the negative press it is not necessary for Martin to pile on. No one on FOX is criticizing Rand Paul or Ted Cruz. The country is at a cross roads and very few in the MSM are supporting the progressive side.

This is what living in a highly controled country is like. There is no progressive side.
Rev. Al is all GOP tonight. Et tu, Brutus?
When our President’s highly sucessful journey abroad is smothered in favor of several hours worth of Bachmann and her nonsense is the big story, I think our democracy is in Big Trouble.

dotster3 - I may have missed a change because I haven’t really watched Martin in days (which is unusual), but otherwise I agree with everything you’ve written here. He and Rev. Al and Lawrence (at the moment) are the only three I can watch faithfully without gagging.

Note how Matthews addressed GW Bush. It never fails.

Since Jan 20, 2009, Matthews calls Pres Obama……from Obama, Barack, Barack Obama, this fellow in the White House to pres. Obama. Matthews also did the same thing to Bill Clinton. He always addressed him until 2009 just like Matthews does today with the current POTUS.

The gut is the scum of flip flopper.

Thank you Todd for keeping us abreast on”who said what when.”
It is simply amazing how they switch gears from year to year, month to month, week to week, day to day. That is why Romney was so comfortable lying. He knew the media would not push back because they were paid media whores.
We must call them out every chance and not let up.
Thank you guys for not letting up on Chuck Toddler……he deserves everything and more he is getting.
This disrespect has to stop! They praised that Dumbya Bush every chance they could.
And please do not be fooled by Chris Crispy…..he is another Rudy Gulliani waiting in the wings. So glad he is done in NYC.

2 Ga. teenagers—14 and 17—-arrested for shooting a baby in the head and killing him today as a mother walked him in a stroller. Shooting babies now. Every kid has a gun. Sicker than sick.

As an aside, the media was implying that since there were no known witnesses (at least on the part of the media), maybe the heartbroken mother had something to do with it. I am so glad these two suspects were found and arrested, not just because of the baby but because that mother didn’t need any more angst than she’s already handling.

I would really like to know what leads young men to act in this way - are they so poor and so deserted by humanity - that stealing and shooting is 100% their lives. I have no doubt it was all their own work - and nothing but tears and sympathy for the family - my sanity would be gone if this ever happened to me - but I still wonder about the reality of life on the streets with a gun.

That the GOP are still allowed to be against gun restrictions - with no comeback is disgusting. Only pro gun democrats seem to get attacked in the media. Like the attack on Gabby Giffords - politics and policy have alot to do with the never ending gun culture that results in babies dying. The party of “pro life” is so anti life it is unbelievable.

Joy Reid is a class act. She called herself out on Twitter, for her early cynicism about PBO’s trip, then retracted all of it. I thanked her, and told her some of us had been disappointed in her remarks since we hold her in high esteem (or something like that). She responded to me (and, of course, now I feel guilty, but it gave me another chance to applaud her).
