I thank him for speaking truth even in the midst of his anguish and pain.
It is a disturbing country we live in most days when one can be gunned down in a movie theater, a church, a community center, a mall, dining out, in a college class, in an elementary school.
I have no idea how the NRA leadership, gun manufacturers who lobby for lax regulation, and cowardly politicians sleep at night. Thousands of innocent people are dying everyday and their blood is on the hands of the above mentioned.
The NRA and their GOP shills sleep at night because they’re well compensated by the gun industry. Where money is involved, the greedy have no conscience. The demented gun lovers who put their own insecurities and paranoid fantasies above human life convince themselves that they, not those who die needlessly from reckless gun use, are the victims. No other civilized country in the world is so controlled by gun fanaticism. In this madness, we are truly, number 1.
Well said NW! My heart goes out to him and his family! He definitely showed incredible courage and incredible caring for all the parents in the U S.! Speaking from personal experience, the most excruciating and overwhelming pain, for any parent, is losing a child! And to loose a child, because of senseless gun violence, must be totally devastating!
UGH…I am just sick and tired of this. That video needs to be played at top volume on loop in the studios of all the media, Congressional AND NRA headquarters…
What does one say when faced with these senseless murders ad nauseum? I can’t think of anything more horrific than Sandy Hook, and when nothing was done by Congress, I lost hope in this area.
Had just posted this at the bottom of the previous thread.
NW - this is the 2014 UT Commencement Speech, btw. And, I think it is a fitting message in the face of the darkness that the KOCHS, NRA, GOP represent at this moment in America’s history.
My hope is that all of you will view this and then share it and view it again and share it again until you touch as many people as you possibly can.
You will have done immeasurable good by doing so.

hopefruit2, what do we even give a dam what Chucky Todd think? This same Chucky frame Obamacare as a major headache for the WH, this same Chucky frame the fake IRS scandal as a major headache for the WH, The fact that the House and Senate Republicans hasn’t done a dam thing for the American people doesn’t seem to be a major headache for them .
Yes anniebella I certainly do give a damn about anyone who has a mega media platform to spread propaganda. And Chuck Todd is one such individual. It is precisely because of the media that the NRA and GOP have been able to get away with these outrageous behaviors in the last few years.
Even PBO slammed the media in one of his DNC fundraisers just a couple days ago. We HAVE to be vigilant because the media is a HUGE part of the problem…I repeat, a HUGE part of the problem.
I’m glad for those who does give a dam about Chucky Todd and those like him. My point was to say we know what Chucky Todd is all about and the things he say shouldn’t surprise any of us. I choose not to listen to Chucky Todd, and people like him, but that is what I choose to do. And I have nothing to do with what anyone else does.
I’m sure the sunday shows will all have the NRA apologists explaining why this young man is just an exception to the rule - and all is needed to fix things are more guns
Rodger’s father, a Hollywood director, and his family say they warned police about disturbing videos weeks before the shooting rampage their son committed near a Santa Barbara university. Alan Shifman, attorney for Peter Rodger, assistant director of The Hunger Games series, said the family had not yet seen the young man’s body. Shifman said family members called authorities several weeks ago after being alarmed by YouTube videos “regarding suicide and the killing of people. “Police interviewed Elliot Rodger and found him to be a “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human,” Shifman said. Authorities did not find a history of guns, but did say he had trouble making friends, he added.
A YouTube video posted Friday in which a young man complains of rejection by women appears to be connected to the attack, said Santa Barbara Sheriff Bill Brown, who called the attack “the work of a madman.”

Jackie, the Russians have been interfering since Feb, but the elections will happen and Ukraine will have a legitimately elected President. What happens after that will determine the future of Ukraine - a future that Russia has assured will view it as a toxic enemy.
Amazing story. It’s depressing that the Ukrainian army is so ill-equipped. Surely, western countries could quietly contribute needed materials. This piecemeal process of equipping the army is going to take time and that’s the one thing that’s in short supply with Russia breathing down their neck.
My perception is that the interval from Feb until tomorrow has been very much about Ukrainians needing to come to terms with the fact that they must determine their own destiny. Have no doubt that if America, EU, NATO had flooded Ukraine with equipment, advisers, etc., that Tzar Vlad would have used such actions to justify invading.
Once Ukraine has established an elected Administration and that Administration begins restoring its armed forces, among all the other institutions that must be built from the ashes and plunder of the past 20 + years of the likes of Yanukovych and others like him, that Ukraine will receive all the assistance it needs.
Thank you. You’re right about massive military aid from the West providing a justification for an outright Russian invasion. A duly elected Ukrainian president can’t come fast enough.
(CNN) — Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett spent a dozen hours in jail after being arrested on charges of interfering with a police officer at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, officials said.
Jarrett, 59, was “belligerent and uncooperative” with police officers who responded to a report Wednesday that he was drunk at an airport bar, according to airport spokesman Patrick Hogan.
“He is dealing with serious personal issues at this time,” a Fox News spokeswoman said in an e-mail to CNN on Thursday.
Yep! What will FOX say when he gets a gun in his hand and start shooting innocent people? Oh I know; Jarrett was just upset and needs care.
If he was black and did this; 24/7 spin on Fox, black man gone wild.
Just one thought on the awful killings in Santa Barbara…..on ABC tonight I saw a part of one of the boy’s tapes. What I saw was a very spoiled rich boy, who had never dealt with anything negative in his life. He was having a major pity party, and had absolutely everything given to him. He is of a type that parents coddle, and try to protect from life.
I see the results of this treatment….kids who are often home schooled, or sent to private “Christian” schools, so they will never come in contact with anything dirty or threatening. I see this boy as so entitled and protected he has no idea what is real in life, and no idea how to handle anything negative.
I don’t know the parents, and don’t want to accuse them of anything, but I see this attitude in some young people whose parents don’t want them to experience anything negative. They have never learned how to deal with people, so resort to the TOO EASILY AVAILABLE guns.. How can anyone sitting in a BMW expect people to pity him???
And the police said he was a “perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human.” Do you trust police? I don’t. That is total dereliction of duty and willful blindness.
There are many who influence teenagers - other than their parents. As a mother, I have always tried to protect my daughter from the bad things of life & will probably continue to do this until I am no longer here - although, of course, it is an impossible dream. I don’t believe in home schooling, nor do I think religious education belongs anywhere except in Sunday School - I always supported my daughter’s teachers when the teenager rebelled - but much of what she learned at that time never came from her home - quite the opposite.
I learned very early not to blame parents for all that their children do. I do abhor things such as parents physically abusing children or imposing an impossibly morality on them, but I do not blame the parents when a child turns against everything he/she was probably taught in his/her childhood.
Warmongering - which seems to never end in our society - seems to be the reason why some think that all problems can be solved at the point of a gun. McCain makes this argument EVERY time a country does something with which he disagrees. It is the reason why the President cannot venture out without a massive display of armed protection.
Which brings me back to PBO - despite he cannot get any restrictions on gun ownership through congress - by refusing to send armed responses when many say he should, in his own fashion, he is explaining that the answer to all our issues - should not depend on guns. This can be seen by both his external responses & by the response to those within the US who would incite gun violence.
All My Children Vet Matthew Cowles Dead at 69; Husband to Christine Baranski
Matthew Cowles, a two-time Daytime Emmy nominee during his run as iconic All My Children ne’er-do-well Billy Clyde Tuggle, passed away on May 22. He was 69.
Cowles is survived by his wife of 30 years, The Good Wife‘s Christine Baranski, and their adult daughters Lily and Isabel.
Cowles’ manager Tsu Tsu Stanton broke the sad news on Twitter, noting: “[Matthew] was a very gifted and kind man who loved life and everyone.” Onetime AMC headwriter Jean Passanante acknowledged the actor’s passing by hailing “AMC’s one and only Billy Clyde Tuggle” as “a sweet man and a uniquely talented actor.”
In addition to his AMC run — which he capped one year ago with an encore during the sudser’s Internet revival — Cowles’ TV resume included ABC’s Life on Mars, Oz, Lonesome Dove, The Bold and the Beautiful (as Curtis Love) and Loving (as Eban Japes).
Born in New York City to Broadway producer Chandler Cowles, his Great White Way credits included Malcolm (1966), The Time of Your Life and Sweet Bird of Youth. The actor also appeared in many films, and worked as a playwright.
Thank you to Jacquelineboomer for the song, “I Love a Rainy Night” it went through my head all evening…..and today we’ve had more glorious rain, without wind, hail or tornadoes! We are thrilled to pieces! It’s even falling in the extra dry western sections of the state, which is in an EXCEPTIONAL state of drought.
I’m glad you got nice rain. Your State is one of the seven driest states. We got the scary thunder and lightening and it sounded like it was hitting our trees.
Every Single Day…. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY…folks are killed on the mean streets of our cities and towns…Until these killings spur the same kind Outage and emotion we will be at their mercy!….We lose someone’s son….someone’s daughter….every damn day…..OMG…we have to find a way to stop the killing…..
So, so, true Prettyfoot! Too many young people are being taken away from their families because of gun violence. This country must stop glorifying guns! We must reject the right wing ideology, which equates gun ownership with freedom and manhood.
How the NRA Enables Massacres
As a shooting spree leaves seven dead in California, the gun lobby is trying to thwart attempts to study gun deaths and officials who see gun violence as a public health crisis.
Of course, this is all too familiar: a young aggrieved male, mentally disturbed, threatening others—especially women—but still able to get his hands on a high-capacity magazine of the variety used in so many other mass murders. This doesn’t happen in any other high income country with the regularity it does here; in fact, it almost never happens in any of them.
But here, in the good ole US of A, we’ve allowed a group of rich, entitled thugs who run an operation fronting for arms dealers—guys who represent a minority position on pretty much every issue having to do with reasonable regulation of firearms even among gun owners—to dictate our policies to cowardly, careerist politicians.
Sometimes I wonder if GOP ‘leaders’ are connected to the real world. They say one thing (loyal to troops) and practise another (vote against troops) and then spout their pious rhetoric as if *we* are all clueless morons who cannot add 1+1.

There is a reason that people are not allowed to enter the NRA headquarters with guns. They know perfectly well how dangerous guns are, and they take the necessary steps to protect themselves, BUT all the protection in the world will not stop karma paying them a nasty visit one day…
Whenever I hear somebody say that guns don’t kill people, people kill people; I always respond with: “I agree, and as soon as we finish doing something about all of the cases where they use a gun in their killing we can move on to addressing all of the cases where they use a bag of marshmallows instead.”
