Boring soccer/football stuff: Belgium have one of the most gifted teams at the World Cup, to the point where many tipped them as the ‘dark horses’, the outside bet to win the competition. They have a pretty darn dazzling generation of terrific players, but they’re largely inexperienced at World Cup level. They won all three of their group games, without really hitting great form, so it’s impossible to predict what they’ll do next. The USA team is nowhere near as talented individually, and few of the players compete in the world’s top leagues, unlike the Belgians, but collectively they have been excellent, and it’s that team spirit that they need to overcome Belgium. I have absolutely NO clue how this game will go, but Belgium are definitely favorites.
Belgium may be The favorites, but the USA is My favorite. Another win would be so sweet and bring even more latecomers like me into the greatness that is soccer.
Cannot wait for Tuesday.
In his memo to his Republican colleagues, he talks about the (mostly white Republican) crowds that he visits when he travels around America, and says: “Everywhere I go in America outside of Washington DC, I’m asked: when will the House stand up on behalf of the people to stop the encroachment of executive power under President Obama? We elected a president, Americans note; we didn’t elect a monarch or king.”
He could just as easily have said, “This guy has really gotten way too uppity!”
This is not the kind of language John Boehner would be using if Barack Obama was white.
Thanks Bob. My favorite speech, my favorite location for our President. At this time MSNBC followed him completely and tirelessly. If people had LISTENED to this speech, they would not be surprised by anything he has done or is doing. He has always been open and aboveboard and wise. He really totally rest foreign relations for the entire world in this speech. The MSM and GOP choose not to pay attention and are always surprised and taken aback because they are STUPID!!!
So true, Bob.
Derbingle had it right on an earlier thread—-the suit against PBO is a huge error. If Boehner had waited to do this after the mid-terms, ok, maybe it would pay off for him.
This way, all I see is our Democratic party rushing to the polls in November. Who knows? Maybe Boehner will be relieved to hand the gavel to Nancy?
Bob, if memory is serving me right, PBO was the first or at least, the only recent President to be honored by England in this way. GWB addressing both houses of Parliament? The mind reels.
Presidents Reagan and Clinton addressed Parliament in the Royal Gallery. President Obama is the only US President to address both Houses at Westminster Hall.
Thank you so much Bob for sharing this “masterful speech” by President Obama. The American people have really been cheated by the Media (or what you appropriately call “newstainers,”) who refuse to broadcast President Obama’s important speeches. The reception of the speech by members of the British Parliament, along with the warmth and respect shown the President, was absolutely amazing.
You are a gem for many of us at TOD! Despite your busy schedule you always find time to keep us informed about important world invents and to send out those amazing tweets. I also wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your reports on Ukraine. Any way, Doc, Happy Sunday and good luck on your work.
See Tuesday’s U.S. World Cup viewing party in Chgo will be at Soldier Field, home of the Bears of Chgo Bears football fame. Merchandise and food and your choice of beverages will be available this time, no “early hour” excuse, game at 3:00. Seating capacity is 61,000 but field will also be available for your viewing pleasure. Party time! (but I always think—-wouldn’t real fans want to watch on their teevees at home where they wouldn’t miss any bit of action?) (that’s how I felt anyway back in the olden days when the Bears were winning and playing in the Super Bowl—-1985 I believe it was, I know it was——always turned down viewing party invitations etc. because I couldn’t miss one second with someone rudely talking during the game—-I would have to say “Shhhhhhhhhh!” the whole time and people would think I was unfriendly and unfun and wouldn’t understand)
A nice relaxing picture of two of my favourite people; but I ask you - Would it have taken much for them to have asked me to walk along with them considering how much time I spend sitting and watching them live? Geeesh!
PBO said that he did send you a txt message but never heard back from you. Perhaps your phone just didn’t pick up his message. Check with your service provider. :):)
A text! Drat! Then it is totally my fault, Hf. :( I’ve been known to not pick up texts until days after they were sent. See, I only turn on my cell when *I* wish to make a call or text; once that interaction is done, I turn it off again till the next time. The very few friends who have my cell number complain from time to time, but my theory is that I refuse to be controlled by my phone. Looks like I may have to revise my thinking on this if PBO is going to be spontaneous.

BTW, how did he get my number? Hmmmmm.
SILLY…HE’S THE PRESIDENT…HE CAN GET ANY NUMBER HE WANTS…LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! I NEVER USE MY CELLPHONE FOR ANYTHING BUT A FLAT TIRE….IT’S IN THE BOTTOM OF MY PURSE ALONG WITH THE OTHER LINTBALLS!

A Marine who was declared a deserter nearly 10 years ago after disappearing in Iraq and then returning to the U.S. claiming he had been kidnapped, only to disappear again, is back in U.S. custody, officials said Sunday.
Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun, 34, turned himself in and was being flown Sunday from an undisclosed location in the Middle East to Norfolk, Va. He is to be moved Monday to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, according to a spokesman, Capt. Eric Flanagan.
Maj. Gen. Raymond Fox, commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Lejeune, will determine whether to court martial Hassoun.
In a written statement from its headquarters at the Pentagon, the Marine Corps said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service “worked with” Hassoun to turn himself in and return to the U.S. to face charges.

Hello Left Out Loud, I said the same thing. If America is tired of the right wing racism, if they are tired of the do nothing Congress, I mean what can the Republicans brag on what they have done for the people of this country? Sure their red neck racists base will love the fact that they have opposed the black President. But once you get pass that, what have they done in governing?
The best part is that the President and his daughter are so “real,” they probably felt they had a serene walk among the flora and fauna, with no one watching.
I know I’m fooled somewhat by hanging around TOD and like-minded people on Twitter, but, I tell ya, I feel a landslide coming on for Dems, this November! With me?
Thank you, jojo. I am even willing to canvass door-to-door for Democrats. Apparently there is a new app for that which makes it very effective to reach who you need to in a very efficient way.
That’s what I did in 2008 to get PBO elected the first time. I also did the same thing in for 2010, 2012. Since electing PBO I now see this is what we have to do to keep the good for nothing Rethugs from control of our states and federal government. I will be working to keep good Dems in office or finding new ones.
While that’s totally true, when Bill makes that kind of a comment it can be used by RWNJs like he’s just covering up for Hillary because of her … impending … decision. He should really be staying out of Dodge, in my opinion, but he’s too narcissistic to do so.
Chips, perhaps I missed it, but do you have a projection on the likely winner of the World Cup? I was pretty impressed with Colombia yesterday. Do you think they have a shot to go all the way?
Bill, advance warning on my tipping ability: I thought Chile would beat Brazil, Uruguay would beat Colombia, Mexico would beat Holland and Greece would beat Costa Rica.
-> 0 out of 4. :oops:
So, I have bad news for France, Germany, Argentina and Belgium - I’m tipping them to beat, respectively, Nigeria, Algeria, Switzerland and the USA.
That would leave us with these quarter-finals:
Brazil v Colombia
Netherlands v Costa Rica
Belgium v Argentina
France v Germany
I’d go for Brazil, Netherlands, Argentina and Germany for the semi-finals.
Don’t feel bad. Of the four teams I picked to win this round, only one of them, Brazil, came through. And Brazil’s win was not that impressive. Mexico’s loss was a heart breaker for me. I live 15 minutes from Mexico. So next to the U.S., Mexico is my 2nd home team. As much as I love my dedicated U.S. team, I think they have an uphill battle. Belgium has a very talented team. I will obviously be rooting for the upset. Unlike you, I am not brave enough at this point to pick the world cup winner, but I am really impressed by both Colombia and Belgium. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them is able to defeat the traditional power houses (Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France) and win the world cup.
Thanks for the expert prediction. I’m not especially rooting for anyone, except the US but I fully expect them to be gone after Tues. based on their play to date.
