LL, thanks for this Hendrix post. His family is holding up the release of the movie. Which would be a shame if it doesn’t make it to a screen - big or small. He was a gifted young man.

Vicki, does this actually mean that citizens in Gaza are literally ‘locked’ into the space they are allowed while Israel demolishes their homes and bodies?

New Wave of African Writers With an Internationalist Bent

    By FELICIA R. LEE
    JUNE 29, 2025

More than a decade ago, when the young Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was struggling to get her first novel, “Purple Hibiscus,” published, an agent told her that things would be easier “if only you were Indian,” because Indian writers were in vogue. Another suggested changing the setting from Nigeria to America. Ms. Adichie didn’t take this as commentary on her work, she said, but on the timidity of the publishing world when it came to unknown writers and unfamiliar cultures, especially African ones.

These days she wouldn’t receive that kind of advice. Black literary writers with African roots (though some grew up elsewhere), mostly young cosmopolitans who write in English, are making a splash in the book world, especially in the United States. They are on best-seller lists, garner high profile reviews and win major awards, in America and in Britain. Ms. Adichie, 36, the author of “Americanah,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction this year, is a prominent member of an expanding group that includes Dinaw Mengestu, Helen Oyeyemi, NoViolet Bulawayo, Teju Cole, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and Taiye Selasi, among others.

There are reasons for the critical mass now, say writers, publishers and literature scholars. After years of political and social turmoil, positive changes in several African nations are helping to greatly expand the number of writers and readers. Newer awards like the Caine Prize for African Writing have helped, too, as have social media, the Internet and top M.F.A. programs. At the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, black writers with recent African roots will make up more than 10 percent of the fiction students come September. Moreover, the number of African immigrants in the United States has more than quadrupled in the past two decades, to almost 1.7 million.

Some friends and I were leaving the theater after seeing the spectacular Woodstock movie, which had just been released. We got into the car to head home when we got the news that Jimi Hendrix had died. Very eerie.

so far the only terrorist acts that have been occurring have been happening under the Israeli government.

It looks like president Obama has been strongly condemning Netanyahu’s actions more than any other previous administration.

It’s utterly sad that when 192 kids are slaughtered in a couple of weeks by Israeli terrorist missile strikes - the kids with nowhere to hide - not even a UN shelter —- that the statement of “our serious and growing concern about Palestinian civilian deaths” is considered the strongest condemnation of Bibi by a US president. That asshole Bibi reminds me a whole lot of War Criminal Dick Cheney. Even their wives are similar pieces of crap.

All of these statements are wonderful and hopefully will help to dispel the negativity about PBO and SOS Kerry’s efforts.

When Israeli gov’t spokespersons open their mouths just remember they are the Israel Liar’s Club coached by Frank Luntz and other GOPers.

POTUS never took his eye off the ball in this or anything else as far as I can tell. So, there is lots of blame and death here but not attributable to either of their accounts.

If the Rafah Gate is opened and the airwar pauses we are on our way to an actual cease-fire. Now just get the fucking Is. tanks out of gaza, please.

Vicki - I have always believed in POTUS and SOS Kerry. However, I was heartbroken at the violence against the people in Gaza.

I felt like … someone walking down the street and seeing a group of as*holes beating the crap out of someone and there were a group of spectators standing around doing nothing.

In that sense, I wanted the violence to stop now for that person getting beaten. We can always speculate on who did what when later.. but at this time the beating needed to stop.

For me POTUS and this administration were the only ones I felt had the desire and the means to push the effort to slow down Bibi and give the people in Gaza some reprieve. In addition we as citizens needed to do what we could to force/shame Congress into stop using US tax dollars to fund Bibi’s wars. Didn’t mean Bibi would not continue the rampage, but at least we (US taxpayers) would not be on the hook financially to support his crimes and Israel would have to handle the costs. Money is a great motivator to come to the table in good faith.

To me having to pay his own bills would force Bibi to put on his big boy pants and genuinely try to solve the problem.

I don’t think democrats know an election is taking place. In three months?
Hence, the reason the media only talks about 2016 and gives Hillary free press.
      It’s Tom Follery at it’s best… Shh don’t tell the democrats. :(
