Chips, I wasn’t able to decipher the above code, and I’m dying of curiosity here. Can you please tell me in English quickly? Slip me a picture if you’re too shy to name him. When you start asking ‘Which young man?’ when I thought there was only DannyO, you can’t expect my ears, and eyes, not to perk up. Give me a break (for some BREAKING NEWS); I promise to keep it quiet between us. ;) ;)

Morning, JackieG! So, nice to see you are still standing - you favourite, Grandma Jackie, you! Does this mean you, as well as Grandpa G, are going to be sleeping most of today? Wise decision to go forward, before even thinking of catching up. The last couple of days have been difficult ‘valley’ days so going back would depress you for sure!

GM Jackie, kissed your comments this weekend too. But glad you were able to spend time with family an adorables. I am assuming those are Grandchildren right? One of the ladies in our building babysits her Great Grandson and is he a joy. Get to play with him a little when she has him outside. Kind a miss those little ones, my grandbabies are too old to cuddle anymore. :)

Roberta, it’s our one and only grandbaby. Both our children are in their 40’s. Our daughter doesn’t think she can safely manage another child and our son isn’t interested. You were fortunate to have your grandchildren when you were younger. It’s hard bending over and carrying a young one at our age.

This cartoon fit my time teaching between 1968 and 2001. I hear from former teacher compatriots that it is even worse today. I saw a difference between when I started teaching in both support of the teacher and parental expectations of their children. I think the biggest switch came in the late 70s upon seeing more blended families and more two parents in the work force. Suddenly the teachers were expected to tend to all of the educational needs of the kids instead of partnering with the parents. I also noticed a difference between the East Coast and West Coast.

    Good Morning TOD

Thanks Chips, HZ, Africa and my TOD family!

I’ve spent this early morning catching up on the weekend events. My heart is heavy reading about the “murder” of Michael Brown and the way the police and the press reacted to it. I pray that his family can find some way to get through this nightmare. May he R.I.P.

I hope our President and his family has a wonderful, fun-filled and restful vacation.

I am grateful that I am alive to see the good and the bad of this world as I celebrate the 59th anniversary of my birth today. Blessings to you all and have a slice of my BD cake and a scoop of ice cream with me today.

That interview that HRC did yesterday seemed to have brought out a lot of bad feelings. Even people who used to be supportive of her on Twitter are now angry. People may criticize PBO on Twitter, but deep down they support him and they don’t want other Dems opposing his policies. I think both HRC and the media underestimate how much people support PBO…

Hf, just reading about that interview makes me feel sick to my stomach. Saw a comment on TPV that electing HRC would guarantee a Repub in 2020 because she would start a war and then get blamed for it by the very people she hoped to please. UGH! I hope Biden/McNally come roaring out to overtake her in the primary.

Is she had any integrity (who am I kidding), she should have resigned if she had policy differences with PBO. Her triangulation drips through out the interview.

Hillary is all about Hillary. She showed a total lack of any loyalty, She could have explained the difficult issues involved when making foreign policy decisions. She really showed her true self. This is a Big Clinton weakness they came become self absorbed.

Good. This is the way to go about the ISIS problem. The Kurds are valiant fighters-they’re just less well armed than ISIS. With good equipment, they will beat ISIS back and recapture their cities. No need whatsoever for US troops. The Iraqis, on the other hand, have proven to be feckless fighters, so all the weapons we left them are wasted on them.

Joe Madison is furious with the people who are doing the looting. He is right-Takes focus away from shooting, investigation, etc. All negative and gives the media lots of juicy talking points and stories. Mike Brown is essentially forgotten about.

      • 114 desertflower
        August 11, 2025 at 9:22 am

Yes…and they all fall into a sterotype that should not be. This should be all about finding justice for this young man’s murder, not filling your pockets with stuff. Seriously, if people want to be taken seriously, they need to behave seriously. Poor parents of Michael Brown having to see this shameful behavior….

        gm TN…

as i said last night…gonna keep my eyes on the prize…

No amount of looting can detract from the police shooting an unarmed Black teen TEN times and then allowing his body to just lay there on the ground…letting the life force drain out of his body…..NO amount of looting can detract from the BS press conference that the PD delivered…..

I will say that if instead of the sham of the press conference by the police that hinted of a coverup….the PD had taken the cops off the street pending the investigation …that there would have been no looting….there would still have been anger and protesters but not the unleashing of the anger….in the way that it happened…

    • 116 Nerdy Wonka
      August 11, 2025 at 9:24 am

The manner in which some news media cover African-Americans is horrible and nauseating. Thank goodness my local news didn’t do that. They covered Michael Brown’s shooting, murder at the hands of cops, the vigil, the demands for answers, and AG Holder directing the Civil Rights division at the DOJ to monitor the case.

I bet you’ll find out eventually that the riot and looting wasn’t by those demanding justice for another murdered unarmed black teenager. It’s like when national news said the Black people at a vigil were screaming “kill the police!” when they were actually chanting “No more cop killers. Justice for Michael Brown.”

Some in the news media like to portray black people as violent animals so that it can stoke white fear (which is always at DEFCON 1) and justify the murder of black people in white people’s eyes.

        August 11, 2025 at 9:37 am

As a privileged white guy, my opinion has less import than that of those who have suffered under the decade, nay centuries, of intolerance, bigotry, prejudice, violence, etc. that so many have experienced. I remember vividly the riots of the 60’s, specially in the days after the assassination of MLK Jr. Living in an almost all white suburb of Milwaukee I watched what was happening with some trepidation, but with a different perspective than many of my white friends.

I stepped back enough to ask myself, if I was in their shoes what would I do. And my answer was quite simply, I would probably have joined in.

The same thing applies here. But I also wonder, what would have happened differently if the police acknowledged immediately that they were culpable and that the officers involved would punished appropriately, maybe even charged with murder, even second degree. And if that were the standard response to situations like this.

What would happen differently if it was known that there would be no tolerance anywhere of these kind of actions, even those actions of abuse of power that don’t result in death.

It is not just this isolated incident that resulted in whatever rioting may have occured. It is the pattern that results in frustration which can find its way to bursts of violent response.

Actually, to some degree, as incident piles up after incident, that there is more rioting. If the situation were the reverse, and there was a pattern of black police officers killing white youth or men, without cause, do you really think some of these armed militia groups wouldn’t be doing something.

To be honest, I look at the somewhat reserved response and think to myself, the discipline I am seeing is remarkable. And yet, it is somewhat like what I see in Gaza.

A violent response just legitimizes the Israeli (not all but enough) view that the Palestinians are animals. No response gives Israel permission to continue what they have been doing, building what amounts to an apartheid state.

The comparison isn’t exact, but it raises the question of what it will take for white society, specially as illustrated in the institutions of power like the police departments, to change?

        I really don’t know.

Iraq president calls for new PM.

Iraq’s president has asked Deputy Parliament Speaker Haider al-Abadi to form a new government, officials say.

Mr Abadi has been nominated as prime minister by Shia parties, instead of the incumbent Nouri Maliki.

But Mr Maliki has made it clear he wants to stand for a third term, and earlier said he intends to take the president to court.

Meanwhile the jihadist insurgency in the north of Iraq continues to cause international concern.
