As I first stated on Early Bird this morning. The first story that my local news station reported on the black kid being killed was…wait for it…when the riot and looting broke out. All weekend long, this story was not reported on any of the local news stations here in Los Angeles…until there was a negative angle.

Someone here pointed out - riots are like the last pressure point of anger and frustration - it’s true. People are still angry about Trayvon, the black guy being choked to death in NY, the black girl getting shot through the front door in Michigan and now this kid. That simmer is being brought to a boil.

    NW, thanks for this Post!

Very well stated, GGail. You can always trust some in the news media to portray Black people as less than human without revealing how we are terrorized in our own country.

And sadly, they think we don’t hear the subtle negative slants to the reporting of the story. From the picture, to the report and even to the tone of the reporters voice and body language. We read and hear all of it!

I get so mad when I’m listening to the newscaster reading a report on PBO and my anger becomes directed at the Producer who wrote the script for the report. You can almost tell which Producer is pro-Pres.Obama and which one is anti-Pres.Obama, then I get mad at the newscaster who read the crap. But I guess the newscaster doesn’t get an advance copy of what will appear on the teleprompter for them to read.

GM and good night everyone. Just wanted to thank japa for his post on the last thread. I think the people of #ferguson were amazing in their restraint, were willing to wait for the details of what happened - until that police media disaster when it was claimed that Mike Brown had attempted to take the policeman’s gun.

I heard that - I heard the blinding hate in the voice that spoke those words. I heard a white man say for everyone to hear - that young man asked to be shot - my officer fired in self defense. If I had not heard it - I could never have believed it was said.

This is superb: a thoughtful, illustrated essay on the American history we miss in our educational system and in popular culture. From “The Weekly Sift”, a blog I’ve been following for a few months. Bet I came across it here on TOD. An excerpt:

“…That sounded crazy until I read about Reconstruction. In my high school history class, Reconstruction was a mysterious blank period between Lincoln’s assassination and Edison’s light bulb. Congress impeached Andrew Johnson for some reason, the transcontinental railroad got built, corruption scandals engulfed the Grant administration, and Custer lost at Little Big Horn. But none of it seemed to have much to do with present-day events.

And oh, those blacks Lincoln emancipated? Except for Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, they vanished like the Lost Tribes of Israel. They wouldn’t re-enter history until the 1950s, when for some reason they still weren’t free.

Here’s what my teachers’ should have told me: “Reconstruction was the second phase of the Civil War. It lasted until 1877, when the Confederates won.” I think that would have gotten my attention.

It wasn’t just that Confederates wanted to continue the war. They did continue it, and they ultimately prevailed. They weren’t crazy, they were just stubborn….”

Even that would piss me off, LL. I see on @Heartbreak_Rell’s TL that his tweet is being picked up by some media, CNN for one I think, it’s an incredibly powerful message and you just want to see it spread everywhere. Someone copying it, especially someone who couldn’t possibly understand the experience, is just diluting the impact.

          • August 11, 2025 at 2:13 pm

Tweet-copying is schoolyard stuff most of the time GGail, pathetic, but not important. But it was Twitter that broke the Mike Brown story as soon as it happened, old time media ignored it and are only catching up now - in its usual grim way. So voices like this are so, so important, they tell a story and experience that is rarely if ever told by the media. So, it’s infuriating to see those voices stolen. That’s why I’m especially pissed off! (Danny: “Chill, would ya?”)

Midterms Give Parties Chance for Sweeping Control of States

    By ADAM NAGOURNEY
    AUG. 10, 2014

    ………………….

It is not only Nevada. Republicans, who had appeared to hit a high-water mark in control of statehouses in recent years, are seeking to pick off another half-dozen chambers this year, taking advantage of President Obama’s persistent unpopularity, anxiety about the economy, and a history of anemic turnout among Democrats in nonpresidential election years. In addition, the party that controls the White House almost always loses seats in statehouses in those years.

At a time when Democrats and Republicans in control of statehouses are using their authority to push through ambitious policies that by contrast highlight the paralysis in Washington, the potential for further Republican gains has raised the possibility of deepening the policy divide between red and blue states. Republicans now control 59 of the 99 partisan legislative chambers, and have complete political control — both legislative houses and the governor’s mansion — in 23 states, while Democrats control 13. The total number of states ruled by a single political party, 36, is the highest in six decades.

Officials from both parties say there are two states that the Republicans might be able to add to the list of places where they enjoy complete control — Iowa and Arkansas. (There are no similar opportunities for Democrats.) Given that, Republicans this year are also looking to pick off individual chambers as a way of increasing their negotiating ability with Democratic governors and statehouses, or to block Democrats from passing legislation.

Hillary’s overlooked ’16 worry: Will she write off the anti-interventionist left again?

For all the talk about her positioning around inequality, her foreign policy may alienate voters she needs in ’16
    Joan Walsh

Political mischief-makers are having a lot of fun with Jeffrey Goldberg’s Hillary Clinton interview, published Saturday night for maximum Monday morning OMG predictability. I admit: that makes me instinctively inclined to minimize the fissures between Clinton and President Obama that Goldberg widened into chasms to conform with his own political worldview.

Except I can’t entirely. Because Clinton and her team are smart enough to know that’s exactly what Goldberg would do. Which means that’s what they wanted him to do.

It’s important to note that there’s almost nothing new in the Goldberg interview. We already knew that Clinton is somewhat more hawkish than Obama. Specifically, we knew that as Secretary of State she backed arming “moderate Syrian rebels,” took a maximalist approach to Iran sanctions, and was sometimes uncomfortable leaning on Benjamin Netanyahu the way Obama wanted, because she’s already told us. Here’s the best take on the way Goldberg, and more important lots of pundits, have exaggerated those differences.
    ……………………

What’s most disturbing about the conversation is not its timing in relation to Iraq, but to the Israel-Gaza debacle. The person most furious about Clinton’s remarks should not be Obama, but Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been barbecued by Israeli officials and hawkish American critics for daring to pressure Benjamin Netanyahu to be a tiny bit more careful not to kill children while obliterating Hamas.

Clinton apparently felt it important to avoid every opportunity Goldberg gave her to criticize Netanyahu, occasionally sounding more hawkish than Goldberg himself, at a time when her successor was under very unfriendly political fire. Even assuming that everything she said about Palestinian leaders blowing chances at peace is true, I see no reason for such unyielding support for Netanyahu — not to mention so little compassion for Palestinian victims — except to court favor with hardline supporters of Israel. That’s disturbing.

NPR has been abysmal in their “reporting” of what happened to Mike Brown and the citizens of Fergusen and a lot of people get their news from NPR and think it is liberal. I think the only reason there is any narrative at all other than the one the police want is because of people on twitter getting the story out and engaging directly with the “news” sources who are so obviously biased.

Barack Obama confirmed the intention of the USA to take an active part in the international humanitarian mission.

Petro Poroshenko thanked the USA for the bi-party initiative in the US House of Representatives of the USA Congress to present the Ukrainian Assistance Act on issues of security which, in the opinion of the President of Ukraine, testifies to the real support of Ukraine on the part of the USA. President Poroshenko expressed hope that this Act will be supported by Congress people and senators, and also signed by the President of the USA in the near future.

Petro Poroshenko and Barack Obama discussed the issues of security in the ATO zone.

      Jumping aboard with hopefruit:
Nothing amongst the MSM/GOP talking points about PBO are accurate or useful.
      Their polls are bogus.

The endlessly appearing articles re: ex SOS have zero value. Mostly they are by paid press consultants.

Occasionally somethings the Clintons aren’t paying for Does slip thru. As in, that the $100,000 3 week rental in the hamptons they are currently enjoying is owned by a GOP donor.
And the nausea inducing set of photos of the two out-of-office obviously elderly Clintons in beach gear. Bill should keep his pants on. Varicose veins are not appealing.

Let me repeat the same thing I’ve been saying for the past year. No Clinton will be the democratic nominee for president.
Both Clintons will continue to sabotage PBO with everything (not much) they have.
