The Deficit Is Falling? You Can Thank President Obama

Brett Logiurato: The Budget Deficit Just Fell To Its Lowest Level Under Obama

The US budget deficit fell to about $483 billion in fiscal year 2014, almost a $200 billion drop from the previous year and the lowest level of President Barack Obama’s six years in office. The US Treasury Department released the official figures on Wednesday, generally confirming figures released by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office last week. It’s the smallest deficit recorded since 2008.

FY2014 was the fifth consecutive year the deficit declined as a percentage of GDP. It is now an estimated 2.8% of GDP, a percentage that puts it below the average of the past 40 years. The Treasury’s figures chalked up the shrinking deficit to increased revenues from taxes and slowed growth in government spending. “It’s really a rise in revenues because of economic growth, because of the policies the president pursued, that we’ve made progress on the deficit,” said Shaun Donovan, the director of the Office of Management and Budget.

SuperPAC down! Republican candidate Ed Gillespie’s SuperPAC “We Can Do Better” raised zero dollars in the third quarter. This is rather embarrassing for the “dark money guru” of the Republican Party. (co-founded by Karl Rove )

Back when Romney hired Gillespie, he was hailed as a “dark-money guru”:

WASHINGTON — A soon-to-be released Senate report on the CIA doesn’t assess the responsibility of former President George W. Bush or his top aides for any of the abuses of the agency’s detention and interrogation program, avoiding a full public accounting of one of the darkest chapters of the war on terror.

“This report is not about the White House. It’s not about the president. It’s not about criminal liability. It’s about the CIA’s actions or inactions,” said a person familiar with the document, who asked not to be further identified because the executive summary – the only part to that will be made public – still is in the final stages of declassification.

The Senate Intelligence Committee report also didn’t examine the responsibility of top Bush administration lawyers in crafting the legal framework that permitted the CIA to use simulated drowning called waterboarding and other interrogation methods widely described as torture, McClatchy has learned.

“It does not look at the Bush administration’s lawyers to see if they were trying to literally do an end run around justice and the law,” the person said.

As a result, the $40 million, five-year inquiry passed up what may be the final opportunity to render an official verdict on the culpability of Bush, former Vice President Dick Cheney and other senior officials for the program, in which suspected terrorists were abducted, sent to secret overseas prisons, and subjected to the harsh interrogation techniques.

“Their sister Genevieve enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Specialist (Recruiter) Third Class and, with her parents, visited more than two hundred manufacturing plants and shipyards under the auspices of the Industrial Incentive Division, Executive Office of the Secretary, Navy Department. According to a 9 February 2025 Navy Department Press Release, the Sullivans “…visited war production plants urging employees to work harder to produce weapons for the Navy so that the war may come to an end sooner.” By January 1944, the three surviving Sullivans had spoken to over a million workers in sixty-five cities and reached millions of others over the radio.”

Their story always fascinated and saddened me. There have been two ships named for them, as you may know. Here’s a link about the latest destroyer, commissioned in 1997 (apparently the granddaughter of one of the brothers was the ship sponsor):

“Upon her commissioning, the ship was given the motto that is thought to have been spoken by the brothers when asked to separate during World War II, ‘We Stick Together.'”

Hello all…came out of hiding to share a conversation I just had….Phone rings…I say Hello…she says…My name is _____ and I am the ground coordinator for the Democratic Party in your area and I wanted to invite you to an event in —— NC to reelect Kay Hagen…to which I said, I intend to vote for Sen. Hagen, what is the event?…..she says…..Sen Joe Mancine of W. Va will be here to excite the base…..after I stopped laughing, I said I wouldn’t go to my carport door to see Mr. Mancine…..she said WHY?….I nicely responded…..Because he has been unsupportive of the administration and further more if Democrats think that by running away from Barack Obama is going to excite the base and get people out to vote, they are dumber that I thought they are….Since Barack has his hands full with Ebola and Isil, and Michelle is I am sure booked to places that appreciate her, why don’t you all see if you could get Bo and Sunny here before the election?….otherwise I expect the base will stay home but thank you for your kind invitation and bless your heart for your efforts……..Joe Fing Mancine…..I can’t believe it……not a woman…not an AA…not a Hispanic…not an Asian……which is the core of “the base” that got PBO elected….but Joe Mancine….If Kay Hagen get reelected, it will be by the skin of her chinny chin chin.

So I get to the end and

Why is it ALWAYS PBO? How about telling Gov Goodhair to actually govern in his state - how about telling the hospitals to spend some of those billions of profit to train their staff - but NO - the only person on the planet who can do anything is President Obama.

This is not the first time the GOP blows it. Remember when Bobby Jindal criticized the Obama Administration for funding studies of volcanos? Karma was there too because a few weeks later, there was some volcano erupting somewhere in the USA.

With the GOP, there is no vision, no long term planning, no strategic imagination. There is only obsession with vagina affairs, women issues, guns, and religiosity.

It’s fair to report. And it is fair he was thrown out of the Navy. Those are the rules. He made a mistake and he will suffer for it.

I have known a lot of times when some GOPer’s family member has been caught doing something illegal, etc., and w always considered that fair game.

I am not gleeful about it happening, but I can guarantee you 2 things. 1. He knew if he was caught this could happen and 2. If he had self reported and asked for treatment, he would not have been thrown out.

          You’re right japa.

But did the cable TV media gleefully report breaking news that Jeff Flake (R)’s son was charged with cruelty to 21 dogs the way they’re salivating over Biden’s son’s cocaine use?

          • 122 japa21
            October 16, 2025 at 9:56 pm

No, although it was reported. But if Flake were VP, it would have been covered in a lot more depth. I know the media is a GOP tool and will make more out of a story when it is regards to a Dem. But your comment I was responding to made it sound as if his using cocaine was no big deal. In today’s military it is. And I can guarantee you, this has nothing to do with the midterms.

And, maybe… 3. He had had enough and wanted out so he (sub)consciously chose this quick - though not optimum - method.

I read the previous post you wrote. Nice job! I will share it with someone close to me that is closed to being a conspiracy theorist adept. She is the type that sees doomed day every morning.

Alphonso Toweh was riding a bus when a man sitting next to him politely asked where he was from.

“Liberia,” said Toweh, a writer from Monrovia who is visiting the Washington area, home to the nation’s second-largest population of African immigrants.

“At that point, the man went far from me,” he said. “He did not want to come close to me. People, once they know you are Liberian — people assume you have the virus in your body, which is not the case.”

Irrational fears about the deadly Ebola virus are running rampant across the country and the Washington region even as health officials try to quell them with assurances that the virus is transmitted only by contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic. The fears have been fueled by the death of a Liberian man with Ebola at a Dallas hospital last week and the news that two nurses who cared for him now have the virus. One of those nurses flew from Cleveland to Dallas with a 99.5-degree fever before being diagnosed, potentially exposing the other 132 passengers to the virus.

Good evening all. I swear, I don’t know how PBO does it. Dealing with everything he has on his plate not even counting the crybabies in Congress from both parties. I don’t remember a time when more things have been being dealt with by a president.

Yet, he never fails to smile. He may look tired at times, but I would be totally unconscious if I had to face two days of what he has to face.

Too true japa21 - every last man woman and dog seem to think PBO is the ONLY person in the world who can fix things - and in the USA - no-one else tries. Perry has a medical emergency in his state - is is handled in the same way anything gets handled in Texas - badly - so he flies out to Europe. PBO cancels trips WITHIN the US because of the issue
