Paul Waldman: On Obama’s ‘Evolution’ On Same-Sex Marriage

In Obama adviser David Axelrod’s new book, he reveals that in 2008 the future president did indeed believe in marriage equality, but he was persuaded by Axelrod and others that it would be too risky to say publicly. So he took the standard Democratic position at the time, in favor of civil unions but against marriage rights. I imagine that exactly no one is surprised by this. And while it isn’t an excuse for deception, the decision should be understood in the context of that historical moment, The context of Obama’s falsehood is important to understand—both his own thinking and the reception his statements on the matter received.

In 2008, the Democratic Party was undergoing a rapid change in its approach to same-sex marriage, and the stated positions of almost every candidate were in flux. Four years before, when the issue exploded into national debate after the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized marriage equality (their ruling actually came down in late 2003), Most of the presidential contenders came down in support of civil unions but against marriage rights, a position that just happened to be where the median voter was. By 2008, everyone seemed to understand that the position all the major Democratic candidates were taking was a temporary way-station on the path to an eventual embrace of full marriage equality. Nobody really believed that was where the party and its representatives were going to stay.

None. Nada. Zip. Zero …… Along with centuries of genocide and slavery, America has not remotely begun to deal with its war crimes record in Vietnam and Iraq. We will remain a shadow of what we could be until we truthfully do some humble reckoning and a whole bunch of repair.

Thank you again Nerdy for a trove of all the news that matters plus some that is highly amusing. If people read nothing else every day but these end of day summaries they would still be better informed than most Americans.

I agree, Meta. If Americans read Nerdy’s tweets every night, they would have no need for news shows or newspapers and would be hundred percent smarter and better informed than any one else they know. Then they might actually get out to vote and do so intelligently. And what a revolution that would be.

Lying, embellishing and doing the bidding of their corporate masters is the norm for the MSM. Are they going to fire/suspend/reprimand ALL OF THEM? What BriWi did was so wrong…but all of them need to get reeled in. One network makes its entire living off telling lies…so WTF!

    • 81 arapaho415

      It’s more than that, DF.

I watched the WHPB today, and the lightbulb went off for me.

Add “bloodthirsty” to one of the adjectives that best describes our lazy and navel-gazing MSM.

It was breathtaking to watch the WHPC *completely dismiss* domestic concerns, things that affect Americans in their own backyards (i.e., climate change, gun deaths, etc.) in favor of being aghast at PBO’s perceived (by them) “anti-Semitism” in favor of a “pro-Muslim” core.

All dog-whistles to lather up the MSM’s RWNJ base.

But truly, it was astounding how bloodthirsty our MSM is. They would be happy if America were the leader of the 21st century Crusades.

      February 10, 2025 at 11:34 pm

Brian Williams could do no greater service to his country than to take his 6 months ‘reprieve’ and shine a light on every single atrocity the MSM has pulled off on the American people - as I said a few days ago, he has the credibility, and no doubt he has all the inside info he needs and more. Not as revenge, not as a threat, but because someone has GOT to take them down, and he would be a hero, to me at least.

I have an uneasiness of this story.
Last night, Jon Stewart had Basseem(sp) the Doctor Egyptian “Jon Stewart” last night and today, he is stepping down? When is his last day on the air? The statement released said that JonS will be there until the end of the year, as the Head of the Daily Show? Oh well, I am sure that the whole truth will be known in due time.

      • 116 arapaho415

You’re thinking there’s a connection between the Egyptian Doctor being on Stewart’s show and Stewart stepping down?

Most of TODville stopped watching Stewart years ago, when his shows began to feel like abash-Obama telethons.

Historical landmarks provide visibility of what occurred.

Most Americans have no idea where lynchings actually occurred, just have a vague notion that they happened “someplace else” and a long time ago.

Increased visibility raises awareness in open-minded White people, and provides a public venue for future commemorations and protests.

It’s a starting point and provides a physical location for white accountability to take place.
