    TOD test:

Which meal do you think is the typical U.S. school lunch…TL, TR, BL, BR?

“For a fourth-grader in Italy, school lunch might include a caprese salad, local fish on a bed of arugula, pasta, and a baguette. A school cafeteria in France might serve steak, brie, and a plentiful helping of fruits and vegetables. In comparison, a typical school lunch in the U.S. looks fairly embarrassing: Some fried chicken, congealed fruit salad, and a giant cookie…..

…”We wanted to look at how kids are eating around the world—not in a literal way, not that this is exactly how every plate looks, but as a way to relate to how we eat in this country,” says Sweetgreen’s co-founder Nic Jammet, who started the company with his friends while in college because they were sick of their school’s own mediocre cafeteria food….

…The company says that the photos illustrate the basic fact that we shouldn’t necessarily be eating the same thing in every location. “You should be eating what grows around you,” says Jammet. But they also show how far the U.S. has to go to give kids anything approaching a balanced diet. Thirty-two million students in the U.S. eat cafeteria food each day. Compared to their peers who bring lunch from home, they’re fatter, eat fewer vegetables, and have higher cholesterol. Only 2% of middle school students actually attend schools that fully meet the USDA’s nutritional guidelines….continued”

Wow! You’re right, it’s embarrassing … and sad.

Well the right wing haters says the First Lady is starving the kids, they are throwing the healthy lunches away. They says that the First Lady should not be telling them what to feed their children. This whole thing is embarrassing, because who would ever thought that wanting our school kids to eat healthy meals would be controversy. It is disgusting how hateful those right wing haters are.

Does anyone in the US take food from home for lunch? It was a real treat for me - and my daughter to buy a school lunch

    • 25 maryl1
      March 8, 2025 at 12:55 am

School lunches are now often provided by companies that need to make a profit. They serve food that the children will buy. They have to follow nutritional guidelines, which are not great but they are something. The fact that children do not choose the healthiest food is not because of the school. It’s because most of our families do not place a high value on nutritional food at home. That could be for a variety of reasons, but it’s certainly not because of the schools. In France they are very very food conscious and that’s reflected in their school food. I remember watching a video a few years ago about one town where they noticed obesity rates among children rising. The school and community were appalled and developed a plan. They children were taught nutrition at all levels. They designed their own menus based on what was locally available. The school involved parents, holding nutrition and cooking class at the school, and sending home recipes to try. Healthy eating was the focus of town and school. Compare that to the outrage that greeted Michelle Obama’s efforts to upgrade school lunches. You should see the lunches and snacks they bring from home sometimes.

Sixteen books, 8 we’ve read and 8 which are new, go head to head in a series of brackets. Which will emerge the champ? Time will tell!!

“Since arriving in Seoul last year, U.S. Ambassador Mark Lippert has gone to great lengths to be an approachable diplomat, taking various steps to connect with ordinary South Koreans and forgoing the bunkered lifestyle of many top U.S. officials overseas. Unlike previous ambassadors, Lippert made a point of walking from his official residence to the U.S. Embassy about half a mile away, stopping to greet Koreans along the way. He could often be seen on the streets of central Seoul early in the morning and late at night walking his basset hound, Grigsby…..

… An Ohio native, Lippert, 42, made his way into politics as an aide to Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and to former senator Thomas Daschle. In 2005, he joined the office of then-Sen. Barack Obama. For a senator trying to get up to speed on foreign affairs, Lippert, who earned a master’s degree in international policy studies at Stanford University and studied Mandarin in Beijing, proved a valuable adviser. He later advised Obama’s 2008 campaign. A Navy reservist, Lippert returned to active duty from 2007 to 2008 and served as an intelligence officer in Iraq. When he left, Lippert helped recruit Denis McDonough, a former Hill colleague, to replace him on the campaign. McDonough is now the White House chief of staff…continued (he was also Ass. Secretary of Defense for Asia & COS to Defense Sec. Hagel…what a résumé!)

S/N ….my favorite anecdote about Dan….the night of the OBL raid:

“Pfeiffer: I went to see “Fast and Furious 5.” In the middle of the movie, I check my BlackBerry, and I have an e-mail from someone on the national security staff inviting me to a meeting. So I leave the movie to get back to the White House. As I’m coming in, the cast of “True Blood” is outside the gate trying to figure out why their tour has been canceled. We decided we’re going to do [the announcement] in the East Room and [the senior adviser David] Plouffe and I walk over to look at the setup. There’s just two guys slowly moving chairs. Plouffe and I are like, We better go get people so we can do this ourselves. We may have killed bin Laden, but we don’t have a room to speak in.”

    GE TODville.

Impressive array of tweets, NW. So much is happening right now, just incredible.

Check out this editorial from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch — apology if this has been posted (many times?) here today — just logging into TOD now.

    From the article:
“According to investigators, Ferguson officers routinely stopped African-American pedestrians to harass them for their ‘manner of walking along a roadway.’

One 32-year-old man was cited in 2012 for not wearing a seat belt while his car was parked at a city park. He was accused of being a pedophile, arrested at gunpoint and charged for making a false declaration — he gave his name as ‘Mike’ instead of ‘Michael.’”

    And did you see this?

The behavior of this (and apparently others in Missouri, if the SLPD editorial is correct) is simply unbelievable:

Sorry I’m so far behind, but did you guys see this from yesterday?

Tweety’s wife is considering running for Chris Van Hollen’s seat he’s vacating to run for Senate.

Gonna be confusing to follow any articles about this because both her husband and current incumbent have the same first name, and any articles about her will surely mention her husband, so there’s two Matthews in that story as well.

I know that Brian Williams is old news, but this article pinpoints what a mess Comcast/NBCnews/MSNBC is in:

    From the article:
“According to this source, the place had no plan to deal with the fact that people, and millennials in particular, were slowly abandoning network news and broadcast TV altogether.”

    And…

“Meet the Press,” had already lost more than a third of its audience during the five or six years prior to 2012. Fili-Krushel decided this was in part because the prior regime had tapped the wrong person to host the show: David Gregory.”

“The administration has said that there is no backup plan should the Court decide to throw things into chaos - and they truly don’t have an option. Democrats aren’t yet en masse proposing legislation to make the case a moot one. That may well be due to the fact that Democrats know, as well as Republicans, that a victory at the Supreme Court will quickly turn into a nightmare for Republicans in power - in the states and in Congress. They know that if and when the battle turns away from a caricature of Obamacare to the reality of what to do with 7.5 million Americans who suddenly had their health care taken away, there won’t be enough gin in Washington, DC to drown John Boehner’s sorrow.”
