12 Straight Months Of Job Gains Above 200,000; Not Seen Since 1977. Thanks, President Obama

Jason Furman: The Employment Situation in February

1. The private sector has added 12.0 million jobs over 60 straight months of job growth, extending the longest streak on record. Today we learned that total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 295,000 in February, largely due to a 288,000 increase in private-sector employment. Although private-sector job gains in December and January were revised down, the private employment gains over the past twelve months total 3.2 million—the largest 12-month increase since 1998. 4. The last time the private sector added more than 12 million jobs over five years was April 1996 to March 2001. There are some notable differences between the current stretch of job gains and the one from 1996 to 2001.

In particular, the manufacturing sector has added 877,000 jobs over the last five years, while it lost 255,000 jobs during the 1996-2001 period. Moreover, the private-sector job gains during the 1996-2001 period coincided with the addition of more than 1.5 million State and local government positions; in contrast, over the last five years, State and local government employment has on net fallen by 423,000 jobs. The two periods did, however, exhibit remarkably similar job growth in sectors like health care and social assistance, retail trade, and transportation and warehousing. Finally, it is worth noting that the two periods took place at different stages of the business cycle—in 1996, the economy was well into a period of sustained expansion, but in 2010, it was just starting to recover from the worst crisis since the Great Depression. That is why despite the progress that has been made, the President believes more must still be done to capitalize on the recovery and strengthen the labor market.

Joe Biden is out there! I’m loving how he’s picking up the pace in full view, not quite as much behind the scenes. Of course, there’s not much coverage of the President or Vice President, and their long-range accomplishments, anywhere but TOD and Twitter!

Thanks for this good-news post, NW. We need it!

Even though VP Biden’s activities are not always in the news, local people see and hear him and know he’s interested in their concerns and that’s very important at this point. He said he would make a decision about running this summer and if Jill is okay with it, I think that decision will be that he’s in. At that point you will start to see and hear him everyplace as PBO puts him front and center and the media will have to cover him as a declared candidate. I would suspect he’s quietly scouting out potential backers right now. Joe Biden will give Hillary Clinton a run for her money because he’s completely authentic and she’s not. Biden, O’Malley and Sanders will challenge Clinton from the left and I’m not certain she’s prepared to deal with that. I would love to see Latinos rally around Biden and I would hope the Castro brothers come on strong in his support.

Like the way you are reading this, JackieG. I’d take Joe over Hillary any day, because I believe the likelihood of him continuing on the path both he and PBO have set is unquestionable! Joe choosing to run would also tie in to his request to be involved in a daily way when Barack originally asked him to be VP. Part of me thinks Joe winning 4 more years would be an ‘ideal’ transition, and then he could comfortably hand off to a young, strong, goal-oriented democrat with similar vision for the country.

Same as I have been thinking. Joe could run with O’Malley, Warren, or Castro as VP. Then after four years the VP could run for office.

          Today we went to Church
We went to Church with our fellow man
          We sang and prayed and
          We especially prayed
          For our President and
          For our land.
Then we left the Pastor sitting there
          The Rabbi and the Imam
We filed out of that Church
          With the Atheist tagging along.
          We headed for the bridge
That was lit up by the sky
We said to all the children
Come along, but hush don’t cry.
We are souls and struggling spirits
But by the time this day is done
We will be pressing on to the tune of hope
Singing songs of Freedom, for everyone.

          Everyone.

I wonder what thoughts went through John Lewis’ mind as he lay in that hospital bed. He must have felt frightened and lonely and unsure of what the future would bring. Little did he know what he had started that day or how much he would go on to accomplish. He was so brave at that time and he has continued to stand above other men in courage throughout his life.

That’s what I thought when I saw the movie Selma, that these were very brave men and women to stand up against injustice that did not think twice that they might kill someone and that NO ONE would be held responsible for my dead. In seeing the footage from 1965 and pictures I don’t think I could have done what these brave people did. People did lose their lives…Black and White people lost their lives to correct this injustice so how can you NOT Vote even if you don’t think it will make a difference, somebody thought it would and it has made a difference with many politicians. We can sit by and wait until our vote is taken away completely. Stop re-doing history and allowing billionaires to put you back into slavery. Once you can no longer vote, then it will be easy for them to take all our liberties away and everything that we have gained. They are doing it slowly with our permission by not voting and be active. President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are our wake up calls……are we ready to surrender or answer the call for change?

    Important insights …

“The Saudis recognize that a successful deal between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany will enjoy broad international backing and United Nations endorsement. Riyadh has no interest in being isolated in a dissenting minority with Netanyahu against a deal backed by a global majority. The royal family despises Israel, and Netanyahu is regarded as a war criminal by most Saudis. Any hint of mutual interest with Israel is unpalatable in the kingdom.

So the Saudi approach is to strengthen its regional alliances for long-term confrontation with Tehran. Most immediately, this means strengthening the unity of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It has strong allies in Abu Dhabi and Manama. In Riyadh’s eyes, there are two weak links in GCC collusion against Iran: Oman and Qatar. Neither is likely to give up their bilateral lucrative ties to Iran, but Salman is pressing both to adhere to GCC unity and not facilitate Iranian subversion.

Yemen is the key GCC battlefield. The victory of the Iranian backed Zaydi Shiite Houthis in seizing control of most of north Yemen, including Sanaa, has led the Saudis and the GCC to move their embassies to Aden, where they are trying to back the tattered remnant of the Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi regime in south Yemen. The inauguration of Sanaa-Tehran air flights last month, a first, only underscores the extent of Iran’s success in achieving a key goal in the kingdom’s backyard and in its historically weak underbelly. The Saudis are on the defense in Yemen.

Egypt is Riyadh’s key Arab partner. The kingdom played an important role in bringing Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to power, and Salman met him a week ago to coordinate closely on regional issues, especially Iran. Cairo is too preoccupied with its own domestic terror threat from the Islamic State and spillover from Libya’s disintegration to be very helpful against Iranian machinations elsewhere, however, and is more of a liability (especially financially) than an asset, albeit one Saudi Arabia is determined to keep afloat.”

A coupla days back, a saudi businessman I met with told me that the last king abdullah was very progressive, spending money on education and business growth unlike king fahd, who looted the treasury for his and his family’s benefit. He told that if abudullah had lived, women would have won the right to drive. As per him, the present dood is a step backward for saudis since he is a staunch conservative.

    VP Biden gets this ….

“The Syrian Kurds — in particular, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) — claim to be fully aware of the scheme that is being plotted for the region. The Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) battle did not change their perspective, as they still believe that international powers seek to change the map of the Middle East and eliminate the border drawn by the Sykes-Picot agreement. This is why the PYD is getting ready to step up and play its role in this game, stressing that the region’s future is one for federal states. Based on this position, the Kurdish party is engaging in a battle to defend the “self-management” model, noting that the nation-state model has “expired.”

In an interview with As-Safir, Muslim noted that the battles to free Ayn al-Arab and its surroundings are still underway, but the direction in which they are going has now been identified. He told As-Safir, “We have already said this. [The Islamic State’s (IS)] defeat in Kobani is the beginning of a comprehensive defeat to eliminate them from all of these areas. That defeat was the preamble of their collapse and the beginning of the end for them.”

    clip

The man, in his 60s, strongly defended the need for a self-management model to hold. It is a model that includes multiple nationalities and religions, he said, and it is a standard that all of the region’s countries have to develop after the throes they experienced.

Muslim said, “After all, why are we resisting if not to defend this model? The current attack aims to destroy it. We are with the unity of Syriacs, Kurds and Arabs. We are defending a model that will be adopted in the Middle East and the future Syria.” He added, “We actually had to. The war and the unrest might continue for 10 years. We have to find an alternative for the people. We are a model of coexistence and democracy for the region. And we are talking about a self-rule administration, not secession from Syria.””

Yup. As PBO said yesterday, so many people giving away the power that so many died and bled to obtain. Perhaps that is the biggest tragedy of all. I am not sure why but there is a terrible disconnect between our politics and our young people. I see it with my own daughter. While she would not dare to abstain from voting (still fears mom’s wrath) she simply does not connect that what our politicians do have a direct impact on our lives. For this reason alone, I am in favor of the draft. EVERYONE in my generation (at least in my circle of friends at the time) paid great attention because of the draft. And that realization lead to interest in all other things impacting us. I also think for young women then, Roe v Wade had such an impact while today’s young women take those rights for granted, or did until recently.

America’s discussion about race and the right and duty to vote cannot progress well without admitting this critical, though inconvenient, truth. We cannot continue to choose between one side that would directly assault our right to vote and another that will keep up withering attacks on the reasons that bring one to the polling place. We must reject the ugly claws on the Right and the merchants of hopelessness on the Left.
