Nancy LeTourneau: What Can We Do?

Leonard Pitts is going to start writing a series of columns to answer the question posed to him by a 55 year-old white woman from Austin, TX who said she was heartsick about the police violence against unarmed African Americans and wanted to know what she could do. Today he reports what Rev. Tony Lee said in response. “Protests,” Lee told me in a telephone interview, “are one way that pushes people’s feet to the fire. Whatever the issue is, it’s brought to the forefront. But…there’s still need for people to do legislative advocacy, dealing with policy, whether it’s from the national to the local, showing people how to be engaged and [affecting] the policies that have such direct impact.”

    I don’t mean to hijack this very important thread, but my OFA team and others are going to Salem today to watch the final vote in the Oregon House to close the background check loophole. We need help tweeting to a 3 Democrats (Evans, Boone, and Clem) to reject the NRA merchants of doubt that this bill will do any good. Universal background checks have been one of the President’s priorities since Sandy Hook.

      It’s a beautiful cool sun-less day in SoCal too after several days of over 90 degree weather and no cooling off until the next early morning. A good day to do a few load of laundry and cook to warm up the house.

    i did not know there were many people of African descent living in Israel….there has always been a focus on the Arab population…what a revelation for me…this explains a law that was being considered that was only giving citizenship to Jews…

      The racism is the color of ones skin.

      Years ago I attended a Women’s Spiritual Conference. One of the facilitators taught a class “Color At The Cross”
      I cannot find my notes. But I was delivered and set free from that revelation.
      In the Bible God’s best friend Enoch was an Ethiopian whom he loved so much he did not have to die to be with with God. He walked right up there. The oldest man that ever lived Methuselah was a Black man.
      I have friends who have visited Israel and they come back saying it was like visiting apartheid South Africa.
      I have been disgusted for years by all the money the U.S. gives to this regime.
      It is time to stop! They need to be held accountable just as other countries who live, breath evil.

        these events are earth shattering…there is always talk of the Arab Spring….but the truth is that people of African descent have continually fought to be Freee…It is a never ending battle….a never. ending. battle.

      I live here and I do not trust them either.
      I am praying that ALL the good cops will speak up , say something, do something.
      I am sick and tired of their silence. Especially the “retired”ones who are collecting their precious pensions.
      How can they continue to work with these racists and say nothing just bothers me just as much or more.

    Today is the birthday of my childhood woman-hero (and who Lovely Plains has to look up on Wikipedia, ;) ).

    It’s also the BD of our CarolMaeWY, who lurks but doesn’t comment much because it’s hard on her eyes — but she tells me she’s doing well.

    Article was published during the global financial meltdown (Oct 2008, just before a truly momentous event) but anything about Audrey is timely, IMHO.

Reminding myself that the truth is overflowing, the sheer number and similarity and stunning cynical lying by Explainers and Justifiers, all make it harder to close your eyes, deny, defend, and excuse. Some will never get it, some don’t WANT to get it because they create it and benefit from it; but many more see the truth every single day. I cling to this. It is not enough and it is too slow but I cling to it and spread the word and pray and light the lamps and believe that we are moving toward truth and light.

    I am sorry that this police officer was shot and killed. I wonder if the events are what they said they were “suspect tugged at his waist band” because once you cry wolf (aka “he went for his waist band”) it is hard to believe what really happened except there is now a police officer who is dead and a suspect that will be tried. I wonder if NY District Attorney will drag their feet on taking this to the Grand Jury? I suppose there will be no calls to “rush to judgment” if it’s done in two weeks.

      Black Panthers were formed in response to police brutality in Cali. The cops and FBI killed and infultrated the Panthers into extinction. Then arose the nihlistic gangs that have plagued the inner city for decades. Positive sign that some of these gangs are deciding to stop killing each other.
