Does anyone have an idea about exactly what “demands” the so-called pro-trade Dems want met in order to vote for TPA?

Not exactly. But I’m hearing that Schumer and Brown are having a presser at 3pm…….

The filibuster was because Dems wanted another trade/currency bill bundled with the 3 already under consideration. Mitch decided to be a dick and say “no”. That’s what most Dems are holding out for.

So McTurtle would rather hurt Obama than get GOP-loving trade. Amazing.

Kind of like China keeps its currency artificially set by not allowing it to trade freely.

Okay. And Dems are fighting a provision that is actually in TPP, or they are trying to add a provision? Am I driving you crazy yet?

    • 36 57andfemale
      May 12, 2025 at 3:17 pm

Well, Bernie has said he’s against ANY trade agreement. So, I’m done with Bernie because he hasn’t yet realized that the U.S. and its place in the world is different and bigger than Vermont.

Let me put it to you this way: if one American job is “lost”, then TPP shouldn’t be signed. If there are jobs created - who cares. If we can compete better globally - not good enough.

And therein lies the mantra of the whiny left: “not good enough.”

I just watched the Obama Foundation announcement for the location. I like the name: Obama Presidential Center……that encompasses so much more than the word library. This center is going to be world changing, I think. Nothing this president does or has done is like what any other president has done, and this will shake things up, I know. This will be dynamic and innovative, while also being historical and commemorative. Bravo to the planners.

    • 44 Liberal Librarian

The implication is that with GOP and Dem votes, there are enough votes to move on to debate. Warren/Sanders/Brown don’t have enough votes to block TPP or TPA.

The Senate did not give PBO the fast track authority, 52-45 on the cloture vote. I am absolutely at the point of saying fucking Dems. Guess none of them need any donations from me in the future, any funds I give will go to the Obama Foundation.

I saw that 57 on DK this morning and just shook my head. This family thought they were wealthy being self employed and $10K in savings. Once you get an illness where your main breadwinner can’t work you are not wealthy. Plus I am sure he is one of those “I-built-this-business” kind of guy although most of his customers were state or federal contracts. Did you see where the wife said we are poor now so we should go to the front of the line”? Translation: “We are poor white people now and we should go to the front of the line”. These teabaggers who bad mouthed any affordable care as “socialism” now wants all kinds of “socialism” so they can keep their home. The first thing they need to do is sell it, rent an apartment, so her husband can “PAY” for his own treatment then build that business again. I have NO sympathy for stupid people like them who feel entitled to government handouts when THEY need them….SCREW or those losers when they were doing well.

Brainwrap (ACA Signups) really fired back, so I posted his post. So they get to act like spoiled children, and then tell everyone else to get out of their way - GOD! Part of this was the nefarious work of the GOP to keep the administration from explaining how this bill actually works. Never in our history has a major new piece of legislation affecting every American been rolled out without the government able to tell people about it!

And I think I read that his problems are diabetes-related? And he didn’t think he needed health insurance?!?! These people are stone-stupid, and the GOP intends to destroy everything but Christian homeschooling so the country remains stupid. I am PISSED OFF today.

He had diabetes and was a smoker. This man was not in good health and before ACA could not get insurance even if he wanted it. After ACA he could at least buy insurance if he did not want the subsidy. I don’t feel sorry for him he can sell his $300K house and at least keep his eyesite. I read he has a “GoFundMe” account and people are donating with comments on how stupid his plan was. So far he has $638 from what I read.

    TRUTH …..

Remarks by the President in Conversation on Poverty at Georgetown University

    May 12, 2025
    Georgetown University
    Washington, D.C.

    ———————————-

So when I say that, I’m not saying that because I dislike hedge fund managers or I think they’re evil. I’m saying that you’re paying a lower rate than a lot of folks who are making $300,000 a year. You pretty much have more than you’ll ever be able to use and your family will ever be able to use. There’s a fairness issue involved here. And, by the way, if we were able to close that loophole, I can now invest in early childhood education that will make a difference. That’s where the rubber hits the road.

That’s, Arthur, where the question of compassion and “I’m my brother’s keeper” comes into play. And if we can’t ask from society’s lottery winners to just make that modest investment, then, really, this conversation is for show. (Applause.)

Greg Sargent has a stunningly stupid column up about the TTP procedural vote that just transpired. He starts off calling the vote a stinging rebuke of PBO. Then a few sentences later he decides to tell the truth about the vote, i.e., that it was in response to McConnells refusal to hold a combined vote on 4 bills, not the 2 that he held the vote on. How this reality jibes with his earlier “Stinging rebuke” of PBO nonsense is above my pay grade to comprehend, but it is par for the course in the MSM’s crusade to find bad news for PBO, reality and truth be damned.

    • 75 EricFive
      May 12, 2025 at 4:56 pm

And of course MSNBC is pimping Sargent’s spin, talking of seeing tweets saying “Elizabeth Warren: 1 PBO: 0” So now the Warrenites will be even more insufferable, until of course the fast track bill passes (which both Sargent and MSNBC think will happen, by the way).

      • 76 57andfemale
        May 12, 2025 at 5:00 pm

Does that make Warren an American job killer? Just asking…….

        • 77 EricFive
          May 12, 2025 at 5:10 pm

This procedural vote had nothing to do with the stuff the Warrenites were/are complaining about, The Dems voted “No” because McConnell refused to combine the 2 bills voted on today with a bill cracking down on currency manipulation and a bill concerning a package of trade preferences for Sub-Sahara Africa. WH spokesman did not say how PBO feels about the combining of the bills, but said that the WH is clear that it is the Senate’s responsibility to work through these procedural issues. I am sharing this info so people are not fooled by the media’s propaganda portraying this as some rebuke of PBO. I guess they had to give PBO a “defeat” even if they are making shit up. Reminds me of the media calling PBO getting Syria to get rid of its chemical weapons without firing a shot as being a huge defeat for PBO.

            May 12, 2025 at 5:47 pm

And that’s exactly how the media is portraying it Eric. Your comment is much appreciated!

Senate Democrats gang up to delay fast-track trade bill

“U.S. Senate Democrats delivered a major blow to President Barack Obama’s trade agenda on Tuesday, blocking debate on a bill that would have smoothed the path for a Pacific trade pact.

The stunning outcome cast doubt on legislation that is key to the Obama administration’s ability to complete the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, a central plank of its pivot to Asia.

“What we just saw here is pretty shocking,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, after the Senate voted 52-45 - short of the 60 votes needed - to pave the way for debate on “fast-track” trade authority for Obama.”

Hell hath no fury like a white woman being disagreed with, this is what this is all about. it’s the same playbook that was used against President Obama in the Democratic primary run-up to 2008. You can do a lot of things as a black man, but you had better not disagree with a Democratic white woman. While President Obama was at Georgetown talking about poverty in inequality, up in the Senate his own party was stabbing him in the back. And frankly I don’t want to hear about this vote being a procedural maneuver, this was about trying to put “That one” in his place.

    • 91 Liberal Librarian
      May 12, 2025 at 5:37 pm

Don, understand your anger. And the anti-trade Dems definitely want to put PBO in his place. But most Dems will vote for TPP. They saw this chance to get bills they wanted included in a filibuster-proof majority to move to debate. It’s politics. It sucks. But PBO is a strong man. The fact that the WH stayed neutral in this whole kabuki is evidence that it knows it has the votes.

Sadly, I agree with every word Don has written here.

You can miss me with the “It’s only procedural” take on today, even if that is the absolute truth.
The perception is that Queen Elizabeth scored some victory today and Our Beloved President lost.

I have to mention “pyrrhic victory” now.
If anyone has forgotten what this is, it means sometimes your opponent wins a battle but loses the war.
Or, in other words, this is not over.

      • 96 EricFive
        May 12, 2025 at 5:50 pm

Please see my comment above about why Dems voted against the 2 bills McConnell put up for a vote. Not wise to buy into the bullshit, (unless you want to be upset, which is your right). The Warrenites’ issues had nothing to do with the two bills Dems wanted included (currency manipulation and Sub-Sahara Africa trade package). Falling for this “rebuke” of PBO nonsense is very similar to thinking PBO suffered a major defeat when Syria got rid of it chemical weapons (only if you cut yourself off from the reality of the situation does either make sense).

I am not falling for the narrative, Eric.
I am reacting to the reality that most people cannot and do not see nuance and subtlety.
The press sets up EW vs. PBO and awards a win.

Making an important distinction is not what is happening outside of an educated circle.

On the other hand, if you are comforted because you are factually correct, that is a good thing.

We just have to ride this out. Much as we did when Ebola was going to be The President’s failure that killed us all.

Liberal Librarian, I truly understand your point, but I’m talking about something bigger. I’m talking about the level of dishonesty displayed by Senators Warren and Brown towards President Obama. I had no problem with Warren and Brown disagreeing with the President, but to lie on him and then have Senator Brown accuse him of being sexist. And furthermore, to make it seem like that President Obama can’t open up his mouth and say that Senator Warren is wrong on a issue and it being made to look like he was personally attacking her. So I’ll be damned, President Obama can’t defend his position without offending someone. LL, this wasn’t about politics, this was about a level of dishonesty and disrespect shown towards President by his own party. Senator Brown today blew a dog whistle, his whistle said that President Obama raised his voice towards Senator Warren.

Claiming a “victory” when the vote had nothing to do with Warrenite issues, calling PBO sexist and the dishonesty are all evidence that the Warrenites know they are losing and cannot fight PBO’s arguments on the merits. Of course the rubes will be tricked, they fell for the Warren con in the first place and of course the media will try to stir up some shit. I am merely injecting some reality and facts into the scrum.

Hi everybody! I’ve watched the O Foundation video, and the press conference now twice. I’m soooooo excited. At the same time I’m holding on to these next 20-21 months with a tight fist and a full heart. Indeed the bear is loose and unchained.
This disloyalty to THIS democratic president has been going on since he was elected. Much is because the president is interested in doing his job and expects these other elected folks to DO theirs. So far most will not! There scared of loosing their seats at the table of power, and very vested in being Senator so and so, and Representative so on. They don’t want to explain the hard votes, or deal with the blow back, and then they all fund raise on BS like crazy.
Some of the tension is also I expect because they figure they want to stay in office until they die and the president will be leaving come 2017. Other tantrums because this man was elected to the highest office in the land, and did not leach of the tax payers in off for decades playing political games. I tell ya they are banking on reclaiming these “lost dems” to carry the day for them in 2016. Don’t worry, I’m still committed to holding my nose and voting for my interest. I will have to drag myself out to convince others to do the same. I’m just feeling kinda cynical about the whole democratic party right now.
I will make myself write an email or a letter to the democratic leaders of both houses. I hope it’s not too late. Come on Biden! I know he would fight for the working poor, and the middle class. We have so much to do still.
