That’s a dynamic many Americans will see on Saturday, when Obama delivers the eulogy for Biden’s son Beau, a husband, father, veteran and rising political star who seemed destined to carry on his father’s legacy before his death from brain cancer on May 30 at age 46. Obama called Biden on the night Beau died. By the time the call ended, he had been tasked with a humbling assignment: To say the final words about Beau that the vice president and his wife Jill are too grief-stricken to utter….

    …And an aide close to both men, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Biden wanted Obama to deliver the eulogy because he felt that Obama would know instinctively what the family would want others to know about Beau. The aide said the men “understand each other on a deep level based on their shared experience with loss and the deep void that creates.” …Obama had gotten to know Beau Biden on his own, during time together during both campaigns. He also saw him on a visit to Iraq, while the vice president’s son was stationed there. Their embrace was memorialized in photos. “The president respected Beau a lot as a rising star in our party, as a person who had taken on some great fights and done a great job and served our country in Iraq,” Klain said. “The president independently had a relationship with Beau and a great deal of respect for everything he stood for and had fought for.”…Earlier this year, on St. Patrick’s Day, Biden addressed a group in Pennsylvania and recounted how he had felt when researchers discovered that his own great-great grandfather and Obama’s great-great-great grandfather each had been shoemakers in Ireland who emigrated within five weeks of one another. “I thought to myself, isn’t that the Irish of it,” Biden said. “All their dreams, could they ever [have] dreamed 160 years later, two shoemakers’ great, great grandsons would be sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States of America. At the time, Biden had been confronting his fears about his son’s prospects. What he told the audience was this: “There’s an old Irish toast that says, may there be generations of children, on the children of your children.”

        GE, JB! My pleasure….as a matter of fact I just got done reading the article you posted. I had never heard the Irish shoemaker anecdote before today. The entire article shows the love and compassion the two have for each other and it says something about the bond they share that nobody but them will truly know.

A South Bay recycling firm is looking for a woman who, in early April, dropped off boxes of electronics that she had cleaned out from her house after her husband died. About two weeks later, the firm, Clean Bay Area, discovered inside one of the boxes a rare find: a vintage Apple I, one of only about 200 first-generation desktop computers put together by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne in 1976. The recycling firm sold the Apple I this month for $200,000 to a private collection, Vice President Victor Gichun said. And now, because company policy is to split proceeds 50-50 with the donor, he’s looking for the mystery woman who refused to get a receipt or leave her name….

    …”We are looking for her to give her $100,000,” Gichun said. She had stopped by on a Friday just before closing time. “She said, ‘I want to get rid of this stuff and clean up my garage,’ ” Gichun said. “I said, ‘Do you need a tax receipt?’ and she said, ‘No, I don’t need anything.” The company had a backup of donations, and didn’t immediately go through her boxes.     I outlined the set of issues Clinton has addressed during these early stages of the campaign and noted that - so far - I’m impressed. Brian Beutler also took note and suggests that, rather than the triangulation Bill Clinton often employed, Hillary’s “grand strategy” appears to be one of taking bold positions. But this statement by Beutler really caught my eye.
    The nature of the strategy involves staking out a variety of progressive issue positions that enjoy broad support, but it’s not as straightforward as simply identifying the public sentiment and riding it to victory. The key is to embrace these ideas in ways that makes standard Republican counterspin completely unresponsive, and thus airs out the substantive core of their agenda: Rather than vie for conservative support by inching rightward, Clinton is instead reorienting liberal ideas in ways that make the Republican agenda come into greater focus.

    Defense chief working on plan to close Guantanamo prison

    U.S Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday he was working with the White House to prepare a proposal for Congress on closing the Guantanamo prison for terrorism suspects, a long-time goal of President Barack Obama.

    The Senate is currently debating an annual defense policy bill that would permit closure of the prison, but only if the president first submits a plan that is approved by the Republican-led Congress.

    The U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay Naval base on Cuba was set up after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks for al Qaeda and Taliban detainees. Obama vowed to close it within a year when he came to office in 2009.

    Republican lawmakers concerned about housing detainees in the United States have thwarted those moves.

    “I’m working with the White House to prepare a plan which we’ll then submit, per longstanding request, to the Congress and discuss with the Congress,” Carter told reporters on his plane to Washington after a trip to Singapore, India and Germany.

      Now I have to make sure that I have C-SPAN and WH.gov on my phone so that I can catch up when family events allow. It is sad to be as inept as I remain but at least I found the headphones that came with my Samsung and figured out how to plug them in. Yes, that lame.

    On a previous thread someone expressed worry that TOD’s concerns about HRC would turn us into PUMAS.
    NO Chance!!! PUMAS told ugly racist lies about PBO. Their hate was/is based on ignorance of who POTUS is.

    Our doubts about Hillary are based on facts. Actions and lack of actions that are clear to anyone of sound mind and a working memory. We know who she is. We know what she did as a NY Senator. Her record is an open book.

    I will not be bullied into jumping on any bandwagon.

    When I see or hear something I can feel good about associated with HRC, I will welcome it and cheer. For example, her view on voting rights.

      I agree with you, Vicki. I’d never turn into a PUMA when it comes time to voting. In the meantime, I’ll express my current views and not try to talk anybody out of their views, because I respect that everybody here actually has a brain - unlike among PUMAs and RWNJs! That’s what an internal debate is for, to hash it all out. Each day, I thank Chips for giving us this venue to do that. I, too, cheer HRC about her voting rights push, but none of our candidates should be given “item line” nods, just on individual issues, in my POV. That’s not how I roll, although others may differ. To me, it’s their overall platform, their backgrounds, and whether they can be trusted. Jury’s still out, as it’s too early in the campaign season. Anything can happen.

      Sorry to ramble!

        VP Biden has said late summer for his decision and I believe that.

          I know what you mean, Vicki. Been trying a bit to look on the bright side about HRC - and even Bernie Sanders - inch by inch, and grabbing with my fingernails onto the voting rights issue of hers and Dem debate recommendations of his, as possible baby steps.

          Don’t want to think about a VP Biden run until we see how he gets through this sad period, but we’ll know soon enough. Where once it could have been a relatively easy decision for him, now …

        yes to all that, but mostly i’m holding fast to the golden final quarter of pbo’s presidency. though of course i’ll work to elect a democrat in the next election- and in every election- right now, i’m very busy being amazed and thrilled and gratified that pbo is in the white house and doing extraordinary good work every day. we know the rethugs have worked exhaustively on undermining and negating pbo’s presidency, and these early primary dramas play right into their narrative that pbo is over. kind of makes me smile, knowing how much he will still get done in spite of them!:)

    had to believe that almost a whole week has passed since we lost Beau Biden;

    a number of days after his death was announced, I still feel a heavy heart like I lost someone from my family;

    Although I have met his father VP Biden on the rope line and shook his hand as they campaigned with PBO in this ultimate swing state, I never met Beau but I feel that I knew him and held him in very high regard (just like his father and his mother);

    if we strangers feel so bereft about his loss, one can only speculate at the level of agony his family and friends must be feeling. continued blessings to them

      thanks a lot for forwarding this to the First Couple;

      when I first read it, I thought about FLOTUS’ push to address the issue of food desserts and how this could be part of the solution. I heard this guy being interviewed on NPR on Thursday or Wednesday and he seemed to have his moral campus pointing in the right direction.

      I also heard some of the customers being interviewed after he spoke and they seemed happy about their purchases

    I’m one of those people (one-quarter Irish) who likes Vice President Biden’s folksy Irish storytelling, about his family or his childhood. Never tire of it, although we’ve all heard some of those stories a bunch of times. Was thinking that we are so lucky to be able to hear President Obama give the eulogy for Beau tomorrow, because he’s an honorary member of the Biden family, now. Nobody could do a better job at this time than our President, and I’m sure Joe would agree.

    Got to thinking of their mutual Irish roots, and found this article:

    ” … Owen, Biden’s great-great-grandfather, arrived in New York on May 31, 2025 on a ship called Brothers. His wife Jane immigrated with their children (including Biden’s great-grandfather, James) almost a year later on May 15, 2025 on a ship with the interesting name of Marchioness of Bute … I’ve often thought that countries like the United States, Canada and Australia were the accidental beneficiaries of the Irish famine, and as I looked at these arrival records, I realized that this was a familiar story to me. Back in 2007 when I traced Barack Obama’s Irish roots to Moneygall in County Offaly, I had seen this same pattern. His 4th great-grandfather, Joseph Kearney, arrived on April 25, 1849, and his son (Obama’s 3rd great-grandfather) turned up the following year on March 20, 1850.
