Nothing from PM Tsipras as yet. Keep an eye on his Twitter account. Word is that he’s speaking with various EU leaders. Wouldn’t surprise me if either PBO or VP have already been on the phone with him.

I see the Greeks are giving a “No” vote for the latest offer from the EU. Given the state of distrust of the Greek govt. I cannot see how this will end well. One can only have compassion for the suffering of the Greek people under austerity. Still I worry the govt. they have chosen will drive the entire nation over a cliff.

      July 5, 2025 at 8:29 pm

The people are sick of austerity - for most other countries the worst has passed. They want this government - they chose it and the vote yesterday supports their choice. From what I read they had not the economy to support the euro from day1. They could well be better off outside of the currency - despite the initial pain - although its easy to see in hindsight what “should have been”.

Nerdy, this is a stunning round up. Every topic could occupy an hour of follow up. I feel smarter just sitting here, soaking it all up and following links. Best possible way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Thank you!

    GA TODville.

The heat wave that some of us (guilty as charged) in SoCal were complaining about a couple of weeks ago has subsided, and our usual “June gloom” weather conditions have returned (as least for today :) ) — cool foggy morning, spectacular 75F now with welcome onshore (from the ocean) breeze. Absolutely delightful.

I am a HUGE fan of Twitter as a godsend service. As a company, not so much.

From the article featured on the front page by NW (thanks, Nerdy!).
“According to a 2014 Pew Research Center study, 40 percent of black 18- to 29-year-old Internet users in the U.S. are active on Twitter, compared with 28 percent of white Internet users in the same group. Meanwhile, only 2 percent of Twitter’s workforce is black, according to the company’s diversity statistics.”

There’s something wrong with Twitter as a company if they do NO self-examination to see that they primarily hire white and Asian men. From a cultural perspective, the 21st century is leaving Twitter in the dust — a real problem for companies run by suburban hipsters groomed at elite colleges.

the Congressional budget tells the truth about what lawmakers are willing to do …where their priorities are….nothing could be clearer than this…so when i hear Sanders & Hillary speak about working with Congress….i think that they are 1. blaming the President for the impasse 2. do not really know of what they speak or 3 are full of JIVE…

The right wing haters have fought against anything FLOTUS have talk about, but I hope she continue to try to help Americans kids.Well into the future.

In my humble opinion there is a gigantic message in today’s vote in Greece that is not just about Greece.
That is that Not For The First Time, the better funded, Corporation preferred, and Media preferred position did not prevail. The propaganda for a Yes vote was overwhelming in Greece and across the universe. The No voters were ignored as much as possible. Still the Greek people voted No a resounding victory!!!!!

In NYC (D) mayoral primary 2103, the Big Money candidate (D) Christine Quinn, got only 15% of the vote.
Bill de Blasio, backed by NO media or wealthy interest group—sent Chris Quinn home and then beat the (R) by winning 73% of the vote. Bill had not a single newspaper or media endorsement. There was a desperate effort to ignore him. It failed and the people spoke.

In CA both Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina met similar fates although the circumstances varied.

My point is that Money counts but votes count more. If you are winning the Money Race, Ok, winning is good, but……..
The Kochs can buy up all the TV ad space, but who will be listening to them?

Those of us who want the Dems to win in 2016 need to stop cutting down our candidates. And, yes I am talking about myself. No more sniping at either of them or comparing them because the net effect will be to drive voters away from the polls, not to bolster either HRC or BS.
I also think that the jubilant fund raising totals are misplaced enthusiasm representing misplaced understanding.

A candidate needs a certain number to stay in the race. Yes. But this race will not be won by the bigger bank account but by the number of people who care enough and like a candidate enough to show up at caucuses and primary booths.

If, like me you are calling HRC “Lady Walmart” that is a bad idea.
If you are pinpointing BS’s deficiencies, likewise, that is a bad idea.

The GOP offers plentiful targets for our contempt. I will focus my personal negativity in their direction. If we all do that, unite, we can bring another 4-8 years of Democratic dwellers in the WH.

Thank you to whichever TODer (maybe Desertflower?) posted Stephen Colbert’s video celebration of the Supreme Courts marriage ruling the other day. Thanks to you I discovered that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert has a website up now with all kinds of awesome content, interesting podcasts, etc., to tide me over until September.

This showed up on the sight last night and it is just…. well… beyond cool, bizarre and hilarious. It’s 40 minutes long. Stephen took over a local public access show in Michigan for real. One of my fave lines: Stephen saying to his special guest, “I was fronting just now” (P.S the special guest is in on the joke) OMG and the Yelp review thing!
