Stephen A. Crockett Jr.: Sandra Bland Drove to Texas to Start a New Job, So How Did She End Up Dead In Jail?
On July 9, 28-year-old Sandra Bland of Naperville, Ill., drove to Texas to start a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M. On July 10, police stopped Bland just outside the campus for allegedly failing to signal while changing lanes. Police claim that during the stop she became combative and that she was charged with “assault on a public servant.” Bland was arrested. On July 13, around 9 a.m., before her family could bail her out, Bland was found dead inside a Waller County, Texas, jail cell. Police claim she died from “self-inflicted asphyxiation.”
Her family and friends say that is impossible; that the woman they know, who fought strongly against police brutality and had just gotten a new job, would never have committed suicide. “I do suspect foul play,” a friend, Cheryl Nanton, told ABC 7. “I believe that we are all 100 percent in belief that she did not do harm to herself.” Video obtained by ABC 7 of Bland’s arrest doesn’t appear to show Bland being combative with officers, but does show two officers on top of Bland, who can be heard questioning the officers’ methods of restraint.

The one unhappy consequence of this deal with Iran is that US businesses are the only ones going to be left out in the cold for all the pent up demand in Iran. Other than some specified things like airplanes, it is my understanding that US businesses will not be allowed to do business in Iran because of remaining US sanctions. Actually, I could name several others for you that have occurred in TX in recent months that never made it to the national headlines. Each makes me ill. I don’t have any answers. And honestly, since the news started reporting the Chattanooga shooting this afternoon I am enraged that the media is so quick to call the death of these 4 Marines a domestic terrorist attack but the FBI has so far refused to do so when it was 9 members of the AME church. And the media coverage the night that occurred was NOTHING like this. Again, I don’t have any answers. There are some days when you wonder if it will ever end, and some days when I wonder if anything we try to do has any lasting consequences.
Where is the platform for hope? It is being eroded at every turn.
As a mother and grandmother my heart aches with the pain of it all from family and friends to a nation in mourning.

Of course not all cops are bad. However, just as pedophiles will often seek employment to be around children, some racists are drawn to join the police force as a means to be foot soldiers defending the doctrine of white supremacy by keeping Black folks “in their place”. The uniform gives them a license to kill or mistreat Black people. A listen to police radio transmissions, or viewing of postings on police chat rooms will display some of the worst racist hate for Black people. If police radio transmissions and chat room posts were filled with anti-Semitic postings and police were killing unarmed Jewish people, the broader public would be able to make the connection. But since the victims are Black (and by definition deserve whatever horrors the U.S. can dish out) the connection between racism within law enforcement and the murder of Black citizens seems to never be acknowledged. A minor traffic infraction leads to a Black woman’s murder. I am sure the usual suspects will make excuses for the cops and attempt to blame the dead victim. Black folks would be wise to remember who these folks are, because they will make excuses to justify your murder too. No matter where you went to school, no matter how much money you make or taxes you pay, some folks will always hate you due solely to the color of your skin. Fact is, they will often hate you more if you attain an education and carry yourself with grace and dignity and embody the “American Dream”. And they will find a way to blame YOU for their hate.

Here in Chicago, on today’s evening news, they played a video of Sandra herself saying she was suffering from depression and PTSD. The family held a press conference and now says it wants a thorough investigations of the facts. So we’ll have to see how that progresses. My heart goes out to the family.
