The President’s Day

President Barack Obama signs the 3 month extension of the Highway bill in the Oval Office. President Obama signed the bill into law to extend transportation funding until October 29, but said that short term extensions are a bad way for the U.S. government to do business

Congrats, VC! Delicious pictures of PBO signing the stupid 3 month highway bill extension the House GOP forced on us. How can Boehner possibly claim without crying tears of shame that he is proud of his accomplishments?!

        July 31, 2025 at 9:44 pm

Hi JF! I strongly doubt Boehner has any familiarity with shame as we know it. Nothing in his actions since he has become House Speaker would indicate he has. Heck, his previous behaviour also shows little shame, though he knows how to mouth ‘ I won’t do it again’.

Our 4 Favorite (Gif) Moments from this Week’s Episode of West Wing Week: 07/31/15 or, “Jambo Kenya”

Here’s something not enough people know about: Every week, a team of White House videographers puts together a short episode encapsulating what the President did that week — who he met with, where he traveled, and all sort of other fun moments in between.

This week’s episode covers the President’s trip to Kenya and Ethiopia — where he attended the 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Summit and met with leaders across government, business, and civil society — and it’s stocked with some pretty breathtaking images. Here are four of our favorites, complete with timestamps — but you should really want the full thing for yourself.

Happy watching! Come back next week for a new episode.

Please send your good vibes to Hawaii:

Pacific Rim free trade talks unlikely to end in deal: sources

LAHAINA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Talks on a Pacific Rim free-trade pact are unlikely to end in a final deal, sources involved in the negotiations said on Friday, with a dispute between Japan and the United States over autos, New Zealand digging in over trade in dairy products and no agreement on monopoly periods for next-generation drugs.

Trade ministers from the 12 nations negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which would stretch from Japan to Chile and cover 40 percent of the world economy, delayed until 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) a news conference originally scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Three sources involved in the talks said a last-minute breakthrough was unlikely due to issues with dairy and auto trade and a stand-off over biologic drugs, which are made from living cells.

Evening TODers - 1st world problem - My computer thinks I live in the US - sigh. For reasons that will remain unsaid - due to the profanity that ensues when I discuss it - I googled “medicare form” to download a form to claim some medical bill rebates from our - not so wonderful - single payer health care. I ended up downloading a US form & spent 5 minutes trying to work out what it was all about.

Not funny of course, but we can’t really blame the computer when you and I practically live in the TOD village! 😀 It sometimes takes me ‘forever’ to get links relevant to me when I’m really doing research.

          July 31, 2025 at 10:03 pm

For me I always have to double check the links I get. Sometimes I’ve been merrily making notes before noticing that the info is not really relevant to *my* search. This happens fairly often when I’m looking for directions as place names seem very common. Imagine my surprise when I discovered not too long ago that there is a place called ‘Canadian’ in Texas! 😀

Some of us old school R&B fans will remember Tony Terry for his beautiful song “With You”.
It became a pretty popular wedding song.I recall an interview he did back in the day where he shocked everyone when he revealed the song wasn’t written about a romantic relationship, but about his young daughter. Of course, the studio played it up as a romance song and the rest, as they say, is history. :-)

Here’s a terrific panel discussion on Women in Leadership held at Smith College (with a group of well-known alumni) where Julianna Smoot was one of the participants.

      The description from YouTube

      “Published on Oct 21, 2025
A conversation showcasing women’s global leadership. Participants included Marian Wright Edelman, president and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund; Jane Harman ’66, director, president and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and former U.S. Representative from California; Farah Pandith ’90, special representative to Muslim communities, U.S. Department of State; and Julianna Smoot ’89, Democratic political adviser.

The panel was moderated by broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien and introduced by Gregory White, Mary Huggins Gamble Professor of Government at Smith and the Elizabeth Mugar Eveillard ’69 Faculty Director of the Lewis Global Studies Center.”

Julianna speaks (or responds to a question) around the following time slots:
      14:40
      29:46
      40:56
      47:19
      58:27
      1:16:38
      1:20:04

By the way, if you can spare the time, watch the whole thing. Lots of wisdom on this entire panel. Marian Wright Edelman and Jane Harman make me wanna stand up and cheer every time they speak!
