yes, we are. Foxfire, Bob, VC and I have commented extensively with names and numbers on the previous thread.
At this moment PBO’s veto is very very likely to stand.
Our current goal is to get to 41 Senate votes in favor of the Deal which will block the GOP negative resolution from even getting a vote.

Lot’s of FB friends watched the Kiddie Table Happy Hour Comedy Show with the Tier Two candidates. Just to give you a flavor of the overwhelming opinion that I’m consistently seeing here in one person’s commentary:

“Dear God give me grace. I am watching the ‘little boys” debate on (vomit Faux news) and I have never heard so much lying bullshit in my life. If this is a preview of tonight’s circus I am out. How are there so damned many complete IDIOTS in the United States of America????”

I wish we had a better media. Well, I think we all do. But there are so many obvious questions that should be asked of the critics of the deal that would show that they really do want war, even though many of them say no.

Here are some of the objections:

We could have gotten a better deal. Okay, question number one, what would a better deal have involved and how would you have gotten Iran to agree?

Well, we could have gotten them to recognize Israel’s right to exit. Two questions: What has that got to do with their giving up any nuclear weapon ability? How would you have convinced them to agree with that?

We should have had them give up all nuclear ambitions including any reactors for energy. So, you are saying they don’t have the right to provide energy for their people in the most economical way possible?

We can’t trust them. (this is where the media always falls down). Let’s say they had agreed to everything you already mentioned, how would you trust them to follow through?

The answer to the last is that they can’t ever be trusted. So of course, if they can never be trusted, there is only one solution and that is war.

So don’t believe McConnell or any other Republicans who say there are other alternatives than war, because that is all they have.

Oh, and why does the media never ask or even really point out that even if the US backs out on the deal, it still goes through and the US will never be trusted in any negotiations in the future and will lose significant support among our allies?

    End rant.

      August 6, 2025 at 6:52 pm

All solid observations, John, as usual.

But - the real killer is - “Oh, and why does the media never ask or even really point out that even if the US backs out on the deal, it still goes through and the US will never be trusted in any negotiations in the future and will lose significant support among our allies?”

Fact is, the US cannot back out of the UN Security Council vote and the GOP knows it. Not only that, but any President following PBO would have to go to the UNSC and request the standing resolution be revoked. Fat chance of any of the other permanent members voting for such a motion, and it would be highly likely that China and Russia would VETO it (some likelihood so would France).

For now, it’s highly unlikely the GOP can sustain a Presidential veto if the legislation can get a vote in the Senate and then a vote in the House. A motion to overturn PBO’s veto would happen first in the House and I’m confident Leader Pelosi can quash it. If that happens, it’s dead.

What I want everyone to do is demand that Senator Reid whip sufficient votes, i.e., 41 out of 44 D + 2 I, to block cloture in the Senate. That’ll kill it before the House can vote on actual legislation. They can pass all the resolutions they want but they are immaterial in terms of President Obama’s authority.

    Reality ……..

“A top German official warned Thursday of a “nightmare” and a “catastrophe” if Congress derails the Iran nuclear deal, and cited Germany’s unique relationship with Israel as a reason why it would not accept an agreement which endangers that country.

“The option of getting back to the negotiating table is close to zero” if Congress votes down the nuclear deal, said Philipp Ackermann, Berlin’s second-ranking diplomat in Washington. Ackermann argued that rejection of the deal struck by seven countries will empower hard-liners in Tehran who insist the U.S. cannot be trusted. “These people will say it’s useless to negotiate” with the outside world, he said.

That would undermine international negotiations in general, he added, undermining the credibility of future agreements struck by diplomats. “It would be a nightmare… a catastrophe.””

An Argument I’m Sick of Hearing!

Bernie Sanders is hardly the first person to make this argument. But he’s the one that is running for president and should know better. So let’s take a look at what he said and break it down.

“I think the evidence is overwhelming that the Republicans, the John Boehners, Mitch McConnells and others had zero intention of negotiating with the President on any serious compromising. Their function and their goal was to obstruct, obstruct, obstruct, and to quite frankly it took the President too many years to figure that out and I think in the last couple years he has been a stronger President and a better President because he understands there is nothing to negotiate with these guys.”

First of all, there’s one thing he got right…that the Republican plan has been to obstruct anything President Obama tried to do. But does he really think he’s so much smarter than the President - assuming he knew that and Obama didn’t? This is one of those ways that liberals undermine the President, by subtly insinuating that he was naive about Republican intentions.

So let’s take a look at the record. During his first couple of months in office, it was imperative that Congress pass a stimulus bill. President Obama needed all Democrats on board plus at least a couple of Republicans. So he negotiated with a few to get that done. Would Sanders have counseled him to avoid doing that and get no stimulus?

Good points VC. Sanders is disingenuously pandering to the emo-gressive crowd with these false arguments about PBO’s so-called naivete about the GOP’s intentions.

As someone who has sat in the Senate for DECADES and hasn’t managed to get a single progressive bill passed, Sanders should know damn well that it takes more than “tough talk” and hard lines to get congress to cooperate on anything. That’s why Sanders will never be more than the Senator from Vermont…he couldn’t even be the Senator from New Jersey or CT…states that voted for Obama TWICE. The only reason he’s “running” for President now is because PBO isn’t running and PBO won’t open a can of whoop-ass on his tail during the debates on national teevee for making these ridiculous comments.

He seems to be on a silent and not-so-silent competition, not with his would-be GOP or DEM primary opponents, but with PBO. I can’t fathom this…I just can’t.

Oh..and Phuck his “crowds.” They’re borne out of ZERO substance…and will fizzle out along with his candidacy for President. Reminds me of the OWS “movement” in 2011…where are they now?!?!?

        August 6, 2025 at 8:24 pm

Hopef, Sanders no doubt knows that it takes more than ‘tough talk’. I suspect he’s banking on the fact many members of his ‘crowd’ won’t know that. Remember, those who kept mouthing that PBO should harness the bully pulpit, show his strength, yada, yada are likely those swarming to ride the waves of Sanders’ “tough talk” now. Hope they enjoy the ride while it lasts!
