Yes, Mr. President, We Remade Our Atlas to Reflect Shrinking Ice: While discussing his new plan to combat global warming, the President referenced one of the most striking shifts in the history of National Geographic maps.

ā€˜Unveiling his most aggressive plan yet to combat climate change, President Obama on Monday referenced recent dramatic changes that National Geographic made to its atlas because of melting sea ice. ā€œShrinking ice caps forced National Geographic to make the biggest change in its atlas since the Soviet Union broke apart,ā€ Obama said during a speech at the White House. He’s right. The shrinking of the Arctic ice sheet in the 10th edition of the National Geographic Atlas of the World is one of the most striking changes in the publication’s history. After the publication of the atlas in September 2014, the ice has melted even further, notes National Geographic Geographer Juan JosĆ© ValdĆ©s. ā€œThe end of Arctic summer is still several weeks away, and it’s still too early to say if another record will be broken. But one need only look at the maps derived from satellite imagery to see the impact of global warming,ā€ he says. Obama on Monday released the final rule of his so-called Clean Power Plan, which aims to address climate change by reducing heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions from power plants.

As the ocean heats up due to global warming, Arctic sea ice has been locked in a downward spiral. Since the late 1970s, the ice has retreated by 12 percent per decade, worsening after 2007, according to NASA. May 2014 represented the third lowest extent of sea ice during that month in the satellite record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Ice loss is accelerated in the Arctic because of a phenomenon known as the feedback loop: Thin ice is less reflective than thick ice, allowing more sunlight to be absorbed by the ocean, which in turn weakens the ice and warms the ocean even more, NASA says. Because thinner ice is flatter, it allows melt ponds to accumulate on the surface, reducing the reflectiveness of the ice and absorbing more heat. (See pictures of our melting world in National Geographic magazine.)
ā€œYou hear reports all the time in the media about this,ā€ ValdĆ©s said. ā€œUntil you have a hard-copy map in your hand, the message doesn’t really hit home…continued’

There are five other countries who are satisfied with that deal, and they will not be going back to get a better deal. it is Bibi, the Republicans and Schumer who is not satisfied. Beside what is the better deal Schumer is trying to get for Netanyahu.

JOB, this is the tweet of the night and the one that I hope Schumer himself gets to see. New York deserves a senator who puts the US first before any other country and they don’t have that in Chuck Schumer. Schumer needs a primary challenger because no one is “owed” a senate seat, no matter how many times they’ve been re-elected. He thinks he can get away with any kind of nonsense and he has to be shown that that attitude doesn’t cut it anymore.

Thanks, jackieG and I agree totally. When I think of Schumer and the rest who think they can get away with any kind of nonsense, I’m reminded of the quote, “A man all wrapped up in himself makes a small package.”

Nerdy, the tweets you selected tonight are profoundly moving. They show people rising up and gaining strength and they are powerful reminders that nothing changes until we collectively stand up and say, “NO, we will not accept this anymore.” The Black Lives Matter movement is one of the most important in this century. It’s waking people up and giving them the courage to fight back. Many of us-wrapped up in our lives and everyday pressures-would miss all that’s happening if it weren’t for your relentless efforts to keep us informed. I greatly admire what you do here and I don’t take for granted how much you give to us on a daily basis.
