Good Afternoon TOD. Thank you NW you legend you!

We had better fix this animus that’s growing with social active Dems.

“Appearing with Chuck Todd on Meet The Press, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) corrected the host when he quoted from article in Buzzfeed saying the Vermont senator had apologized to Black Lives Matter, telling Todd the apology came from a staffer and that it “was sent out without my knowledge.”

As I just stated on Facebook, I’m sensing a real racial divide that’s starting to manifest itself within the Democratic Party. Progressives/Liberal/Dems may want to tread lightly. I’d hate to see us blow up this Presidential election because people are so passionate about their candidate (s) that they lose sight of the real racial injustice that is taking place in this country. President Obama has been heckled, protested and shouted down more times than I care to count and although I didn’t like it when it happened to him I was sympathetic to the message that the protester was trying to convey. Just something to think about as we make our decision about who we want to lead this Party to victory in 2016.

      August 17, 2025 at 1:07 pm

I’m not so sure Donna. Sanders and his supporters really represent a small percentage so I don’t really see the racial divide being much of a problem. The overwhelming majority of Dems love PBO and are going to work like crazy to make sure a Dem wins in 2016. Sanders by that time will be a distant memory imo.

      • 11 EricFive
        August 17, 2025 at 1:49 pm

It is a divide that Sanders and his supporters are intentionally creating. They think that if the Democratic party abandons civil rights issues it will be able to attract the working class whites who left the party in protest of the civil rights victories of the 1960’s. This is why Sanders cannot be seen to be apologizing to the BLM movement because that would piss off the white voters he covets. I don’t think very many of the Sanders supporters voted for PBO (or anyone else). These appear to be folks who became politically aware during the Age of Obama, but never embraced his presidency. In Sanders they have a candidate they can embrace, so long as he sticks to THEIR issues.

      • 14 maryl1
        August 17, 2025 at 4:01 pm

First, (and leaving aside the fact that he feels the need not to apologize to Black Lives Matter), if his staffers are going around saying things he doesn’t want them to say, he’d better get that fixed before the campaign goes much further. The staffer probably wanted to mitigate the damage done by Sander’s immediate response to the disruption. Also maybe that staffer will be a little disenchanted with Sanders after this.
Second, I’ve finally identified what Sanders, and to an eve greater extent his followers, remind me of: the Occupy movement. There’s the same grandiose, sweeping ideas, the same disdain for who have any other issues besides their own, disdain for any form of compromise, and a lack of political intelligence on how to successfully move the agenda forward, even if it is one step at a time.
I agree with Eric that he is trying to win back voters that left us in the 60s because those are the people he knows and the issues he knows- basically it seems he wants the labor movement first half of the 20th century.

Donna, I share your concerns and hope that in honor of President Obama and to continue his legacy, we will come together to support the Democratic nominee for President and do more than just vote. I can’t imagine feeling as passionate about any other candidate as I did about Barack Obama, but the bottom line is holding the White House and changing the Supreme Court. Re-taking Congress would require a huge wave of voters from the big tent of Democrats as well as independents. Let the GOP lose by in-fighting. We can’t afford to do that because people’s lives are at stake.

I go along with that Judith. This the funny season right now. I think after schools are in and the State Fairs are done and the primaries start it will be a whole new ball game. Bernie’s people are wondering why there are no Dem’s endorsing him. I told them, he is not in the Democratic Party, he is an Independent Socialist and in the Socialist party. Why Wasserman Schultz even puts him in with the Dems is a head shaker for me. I keep repeating Sanders is a Socialist not a registered Dem. in reply to anyone on Twitter that makes it sound like he is part of our party.

    In other Not happening news—-
Since Sherrod Brown announced his Yes vote on Friday night, it is all too quiet on the vote for the Iran Deal. The people who are running to Donald Trump is doing so because they are angry, they are angry because for the last six and a half years the United States of America have had a black man as President. Am I saying Trump supporters are racists? Yes I am. How the hell are you going to support someone who is talking about building a fence on the border and making Mexico pay for it? Kicking over 11 million people out of this country. You are not guided by common sense, you are guided by your racism.

Because I’ve been having a fruitless discussion with someone in another forum, I’m going to post this here. The discussion was about the ‘rudeness’ of the BLM protesters toward B.Sanders. They were ‘rude’, ‘insensitive’, ‘hurting their own cause’. They noted how much more polite Dr King and his supporters had been; they had been involved in ‘direct action’, not ‘protests’. And by direct action they meant, for instance, Rosa Parks claiming her right to retain her bus seat which had been denied to her. Or the Greensboro sit-in where young people claimed their right to sit at a public lunch counter through the direct action of sitting there, a right that had been denied to them. White privilege at its finest. Another participant did ask what the ‘direct action’ would be when denied the right to live by a police bullet, refuse to die? Another brought up the March on Washington, which was certainly a ‘protest’. My goal in engaging in this was as always, not aimed at the pig-headed person who staked out the original position, but to get out some facts that other following might see and consider. I found this interesting article which speaks directly to the argument about politeness. It has the video and the transcript of Dr. King being interviewed about the tactics of the sit-ins.

The first question MLK was asked on Meet the Press: ‘Aren’t the sit-ins hurting the negro cause?'”
