Greg Sargent: Paul Volcker: It Would Be ‘A Sad Day’ If Congress Blocks Iran Deal
In recent days, opponents of the Iran nuclear accord have argued that if Congress blocks it, the major powers that negotiated the agreement can simply go back and crank up sanctions to put more pressure on Iran to agree to a better deal. That argument, however, has been met with push-back from some prominent financial experts, such as Henry Paulson, the Treasury Secretary under George W. Bush, and Jacob Lew, who occupies that post under the current president. They have argued that the other powers won’t reimpose sanctions,
leading the sanctions regime against Iran to unravel and leaving the U.S. isolated — all without getting the inspection and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program that the deal would secure. And here’s another prominent financial figure who is also dismissing the “go back and get a better deal” argument: Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve under presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. Volcker has been widely credited with curbing inflation at the time and helping launch the much-vaunted Reagan recovery. “I think this arrangement ought to be approved,” Volcker told me in a phone interview today. “I think it would be a sad day if it’s not.”

Yup! Howdy!…it was all just THAT easy! Every trouble will be “immigrant” related…which keeps them all from seeing reality and finding solutions to the REAL problems…
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/political-animal-a/2015_08/the_immigrant_gangs_of_ferguso057224.php
Donald Trump says many of the “gang members” in Chicago, Ferguson, and Baltimore are undocumented immigrants.
“You know, a lot of the gangs that you see — this doesn’t hopefully pertain to you guys so much — when you look at Baltimore, when you look at Chicago, and Ferguson a lot of these areas,” Trump said on FM Talk 1065AM on Thursday. “You know, a lot of these gang members are illegal immigrants. They’re gonna be gone. We’re gonna get them out so fast, out of this country. So fast.”
Trump was appearing to discuss his recent immigration plan ahead of an appearance Friday at Ladd Peebles Stadium, which has a maximum capacity of 50,000.

Excellent, mine too Rep. Kurt Schrader.

Bill, we have the same Rep and frankly I was surprised he supported the deal. I am also surprised Senator Merkley was not a shu in for support. I am worried that Senator Wyden will be against it. I have been calling and emailing them to death.

Republicans’ deep hatred for teachers can’t be denied and they’re not trying
John Kasich wants to take lounges away from teachers. He is just the latest Republican to make an enemy of America’s educators
Friday 21 August 2025 07.30 EDT
It’s August, the heat is miserable, kids are going back to school and that means one thing for America’s conservatives: it’s the perfect time to take a cheap shot at the nation’s teachers.
John Kasich, the Republican governor of Ohio – who is generally considered less extreme than Texas Senator Ted Cruz, less dynastic than former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and less crazy than professional troll Donald Trump – recently said: “If I were, not president, if I were king in America, I would abolish all teachers’ lounges where they sit together and worry about ‘woe is us’.”
Kasich addressed a New Hampshire “education summit” sponsored by the 74 Million, an education “news site” which Huffington Post points out is run byfailed CNN host Campbell Brown “despite having little to no training in education, and never having taught students herself.” Many other Republican presidential hopefuls, including Governors Bush, Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey, addressed the gathering.
Republicans love to hate teachers and imply that all the ills of US society are the result of their laziness. If only schools could be turned over to market forces and not held back by greedy teacher unions, conservative logic goes, everything would be fine – even though charter schools perform no better than traditional schools. Trying to bust unions in general (and those of teachers in particular) turns conservatives on as much as trying to deny climate change, defend the NRA,defund Planned Parenthood or battle for a check from the Koch brothers.

She met Jeb Bush in 1970 in León when she was 16 years old and he was 17.[1] He was teaching English as a second language and assisting in the building of a school in a small village outside of León, Guanajuato, Mexico, (the village of Ibarrilla)[8] as part of a class at Andover called Man and Society.[5][1]
They were married on February 23, 1974, in Austin, Texas[9][10][11] at the chapel in the Catholic student center on the campus of the University of Texas.[7][5] At the time of the wedding, she did not speak English; therefore, a part of the wedding ceremony was conducted in Spanish.[1]

Israel and its supporters simply have no long-term choice but democracy, equality and self-determination for both Jews and Palestinians.
It has come to this. Ronn Torossian, “the most disreputable flack in New York… representing the lunatic fringe,” as described by Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, has been paid for the better part of a year to attack the New Israel Fund and its donors.
Frequently teamed up with Pamela Geller, an Islamophobe so extreme that she has been described as something of a one-woman hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, Torossian and his cronies purvey outright falsehoods on extremist websites and blogs.
And now, although the editors assure us they will not run such screeds again, we must respond to the recent attack on the NIF in The Jerusalem Post.”
Read all of it!
“This is the crux of the matter. We who uphold democratic values including freedom of expression, and who differentiate between Tel Aviv and Kfar Tapuah, are the majority.
Our opponents are the extreme Left and Right, who support a one-state solution with or without equal rights for Palestinians, erasing the Green Line and, we believe, any prospects for self-determination for both peoples and for eventual peace. In this, Ronn Torossian, Pamela Geller and the founders of the Global BDS movement are, ironically, on the same page.”

Democratic Blues
Barack Obama will leave his party in its worst shape since the Great Depression—even if Hillary wins.
By JEFF GREENFIELD
August 20, 2025
Under Obama, the party started strong. “When Obama was elected in 2008, Democrats were at a high water mark,” says David Axelrod, who served as one of Obama’s top strategists. “Driven by antipathy to George W. Bush and then the Obama wave, Democrats had enjoyed two banner elections in ’06 and ’08. We won dozens of improbable congressional elections in states and districts that normally would tack Republican, and that effect trickled down to other offices. You add to that the fact that we would take office in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, and it was apparent, from Day One, that we had nowhere to go but down.”
The first signs of the slowly unfolding debacle that has meant the decimation of the Democratic Party nationally began early—with the special election of Scott Brown to Ted Kennedy’s empty Senate seat in Massachusetts. That early loss, even though the seat was won back eventually by Elizabeth Warren, presaged the 2010 midterms, which saw the loss of 63 House and six Senate seats. It was disaster that came as no surprise to the White House, but also proved a signal of what was to come.
The party’s record over the past six years has made clear that when Barack Obama leaves office in January 2017 the Democratic Party will have ceded vast sections of the country to Republicans, and will be left with a weak bench of high-level elected officials. It is, in fact, so bleak a record that even if the Democrats hold the White House and retake the Senate in 2016, the party’s wounds will remain deep and enduring, threatening the enactment of anything like a “progressive” agenda across much of the nation and eliminating nearly a decade’s worth of rising stars who might help strengthen the party in elections ahead.
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/08/democratic-blues-121561.html#ixzz3jSmDdR7p
sounds like wishful thinking from Jeff Greenfield’s end. BTW the republican party is in the sorriest state I’ve seen in my life time and the media’s failed grasp of this reality shows their ever weakening state.
This article describes Mission Accomplished for the DNC/DLC /DINOS.
Their efforts to destroy the Democratic Party and Country led by POTUS and VPOTUS have been at first baffling, but then predictable.
How else to explain running a guaranteed loser—-Martha Coakley—twice in Massachusetts?
How else to explain DWS continuing in a position of power?
How else can you explain the calculated distancing and disdain for PBO shown at every opportunity?
Bibi addressing Congress?
Vote Against the President initially regarding the TPP?
Decent candidates such as Michelle Nunn, Kay Hagan, Alison Grimes running Losing Idiotic campaigns? Cannot be coincidence.
Most of us have gotten the message. Handing the country over to the corporations has been The Plan.
—————————————————————————
I see the next few weeks as the turning point for the Democratic Party. Life or death.
We run Joe Biden. We run on the extraordinary Success of The Obama Administration.
We run as The Winners we Are.
Or we go with the corporate state and lose what is left of democracy in the USA.
I will be out for a few hours but I hope to see if my description of the zeitgeist meets with approval or disdain.
BBL
I don’t really understand how we got into this mess on a national level. Maybe there have been a lot of people who are asleep at the wheel at the state level. But DWS holds major responsibility for our problems and it’s the ONLY thing about PBO that I don’t really understand: why she still has her job. She has been terrible for the party, no question. There must be something else at play, behind the scenes that we are not privy to.
I don’t know what compelled Greenfield to single out the Dem Party because everybody knows that the GOP is in full meltdown. I guess he thinks they’ll win. And perhaps they will. I’ve said this before, having watched 2 terms of W and Schwarzenegger, I don’t doubt it can happen. That’s why I don’t find his campaign in the least “entertaining.”
VP Biden is my only hope. If he doesn’t run, I truly fear for our future.
I watched Jeff Greenfield on Hard Copy one evening and I did not like the things he said, from what he said I could tell he was anti-Obama.
Urge everyone visiting TOD to read every word of it, at least once …
“In the spring of 2003, as the statue of Saddam Hussein tumbled down in Baghdad, the leaders in Tehran were worried they were next. They sent Washington an offer to negotiate. The offer addressed Iran’s nuclear program and a range of other matters, from Iran’s support for Hezbollah and Hamas to the situation in Iraq. But President George W. Bush, having declared Iran a member of the “Axis of Evil” in his State of the Union address in 2002, spurned the offer. At the time, Iran had less than 200 centrifuges for uranium enrichment.
A little more than five years later, George W. Bush left office and the Iranians had over 8,000 such centrifuges. Clearly, ignoring Tehran was not working. Moreover the belated efforts of the Bush-Cheney administration, of which I was a part, did too little and were too late in strengthening the sanctions regime against Iran. In short, there was no policy with regard to Iran in the Bush administration other than, in Dick Cheney’s words, “We don’t talk to evil.”
clip
I helped with U.S. war-planning in the mid-1980s when U.S. leadership feared the Soviets would roll out of Afghanistan after their invasion in 1979-80 and march straight down to the warm-water ports on the Persian Gulf, particularly Bandar Abbas and Chabahar in Iran. I studied the passes and the compartmentalization of the Zagros Mountains and Iranian geography in general. No place on earth terrain-wise is as bad as Afghanistan, but Iran comes very close. Alexander the Great almost perished there. It is not a place America should go to war unless near-annihilation of Iran’s population and industry is the objective and the full panoply of U.S. power is unleashed. That is simply not going to happen, despite the call of some Luddites for it to happen.
“Don’t take counsel of your fears” is an age-old aphorism. But like so many such soothsayer sayings, it often masks its opposite and just-as-wise counsel: “Don’t overestimate your capabilities.” The U.S. overestimated its capabilities to great damage in Vietnam and Iraq. We must not repeat that huge mistake with Iran.”
Much more so than we were in Vietnam and Iraq ….
U.S. is alone and it better be without using US taxpayer dollars.
US Citizens should not be forced to fund Bibi’s wars
Wilkerson was on Real Time last Friday and quoted this from The Princess Bride.
” Never engage in a land war in Asia ” !
Good Friday Morning TOD. I know PBO needs his vacation but I think I’m in need of an Obama Fix. Today I feel like this country is going to hell in a hand basket
This is no Joke!
I will no longer say that Donald Trump cannot win the GOP nomination for President.
We live in a scary society where our media has lost what little was left of their collective minds. All day everyday it’s all Trump Trump Trump or Email Email Email. I feel sorry for our country.
When I read yesterday that cable news was actually reporting on that racist story by Breitbart about whether or not Shaun King was “really” black I threw up my hands in disgust.
And who in the hell is advising Hillary Clinton? I said months ago that she should have turned over that server, give them what they want, do interviews to dispel all the myths and close the subject but nooooo they have to stand their ground when any fool who was paying attention would know that this media was not going to let this go. They have her wrapped up so tight that its ridiculous. She does no interviews and very few press availabilities. Her campaign is a mess. I warned that they were building her up just so that they could tear her down this year. This is why all that “inevitable” crap they were spewing last year and before she declared her candidacy didn’t bother me in the least. I knew that she was going to be challenged. I just thought it was going to come from Martin O’Malley rather than Sanders. Martin’s problem is that he waited too late to get into the race and Sanders blind sided him. They both are running on the same policies.
Speaking of Sanders, he has some (not all) of the nastiest supporters that I have ever encountered on the web. I thought the Paulites were bad in 2012 and the PUMA’s in 2008 but they can’t hold a candle to this crowd. Meanwhile he’s still drawing big crowds while selling them fairy dust.
One of the reasons that PBO is so revered is because he is more than just his policies. He’s brilliant, handsome, great dad, wonderful loving husband, devoted friend, excellent orator and an all around great guy. People use adjectives like, love, adore, admire etc… when describing him. Tell me one person on either the Dem or the Republican side that has announced that inspire those feelings in people? No one…Nada…Nothing. Lawd VP Joe Run…at this point he is our best hope.
I know I’m kinda all over the place this morning but being a political junkie and someone who was actually looking forward to following the 2016 election there are days like this when I just want to find a cave and go hibernate for the next 15 months.
p.s. Also, brace yourself, I’ve read several comments on FB over the last week about Black Lives Matter protesting PBO. So be prepared for this starting with his visits New Orleans next week.
Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest I’m going for another Birthday lunch with friends today. Yes I’m one of those people who celebrate the whole month. I might even have a drink!
And Nerdy you continue to honor this site with all the news we can use. Thank You so Very Much!

I tell you, you have the best rants, DonnaDem. I couldn’t agree with you more on all of it. I don’t whether to laugh or cry. I can hardly stomach the thought of after 8 brilliant years of the very best POTUS in our lifetime, we are left with HRC, Sanders, Trump and Bush. I can’t even express my anger and disgust. It’s deep.
I hope you have a wonderful lunch and, YES, have a good sip, I say. Relax and enjoy!

Hello TOD.
Sunny. Getting Hotter, it will get to 83F, with a slight Breeze.
Excellent R&S post , NW. Thank you.
Congrats Dudette on your Golden :star:
Contrary to the wishes of the GOPers, Neo-cons and the MSN……the #IranDeal Supporters in Congress and Elsewhere keep increasing daily.
Thanks TODvillers for ALL you do ;) -I

Folk recognize a pattern :)
Islamic State of Iran? What a ridiculous assertion from Bibi and his defectors. Israel’s politics are a major problem though because they have no real left party anymore. It’s all right, far right, and far-far right and so on. Most of it hinges on war and hawkish policies which is a shame as several people from Israel that I’ve met are overall decent people.
Good Morning All!
Been doing some heavy lurking lately. Some busy work away from the home the last few weeks and the allergies (I never had them before we moved to NM) really giving me the blues.
The republican clown show gets more ridiculous every day. If I didn’t know better, (and maybe I don’t) I believe were in the Twilight Zone.
Very excited about the success of My Brother’s Keeper. The President doesn’t pay lip service to anything, he is a man of action and continues to score victories for the people of this country almost every day. He and his family as always, are in my prayers.
That would explain the CNN poll alert I received warning that “Disapproval of President Obama is on the rise amid dismal reviews of his work on some foreign policy issues and a sense his policies would lead the U.S. in the wrong direction, CNN/ORC poll shows.”
Translation: PBO is going to come out on top with the Iran Deal and we’re carrying water for Netanyahu and AIPAC!
polls don’t show anything of the sort. They show a segment of the population that the pollster wants people to see and are often wrong because they aren’t sampled in a scientific fashion.
Agreed. CNN is doing the work of the GOP by trying to influence public opinion. They want people to think that PBO is unpopular because “polls say so!” Never mind that the polls are junk. Worthless, biased MSM at work again.
What’s going on?
US troops mobilise in South Korea as Kim Jong-un declares ‘quasi-state of war’: live
Kim Jong-un has ordered North Korea’s troops to be on a war footing as tensions with South Korea escalate following an exchange of shells
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/11815637/North-Korean-troops-ordered-onto-war-footing-by-Kim-Jong-un-live.html
Nothing good, I’m afraid.
Please let the saber-rattling cease
Tell me about it.
This is the pissing contest that escalates…
The North and South have been technically at war since the Korean War in the 1950s, which ended in an armistice, not a formal peace deal.
Pyongyang is notorious for issuing bellicose statements at times of diplomatic strife. on Aug. 14, after South Korean activists sent propaganda leaflet-bearing balloons across the border, North Korea threatened to turn Seoul into a “sea of fire.”
On Thursday, North Korea fired a projectile at a South Korean loudspeaker that was broadcasting anti-Pyongyang messages over the border, a no-man’s land that has divided the two countries since 1953.
South Korea retaliated by firing dozens of 155-millimeter artillery shells at the source of the attack, according to a statement from the South Korean Defense Ministry. Neither side has reported injuries or damage.
North Korea warned Seoul on Friday that it would take “military action” if the South did not halt the broadcasts by 5 p.m. Saturday, according to South Korean media.
South Korea has ordered evacuations in villages close to the border. The Associated Press reported that the nation has put its military on top alert and vowed to sternly deal with any North Korean provocations.
As I read more of the LA Times article, I found that this was started by NK
“The most recent round of tensions began in mid-August, when Seoul accused North Korean soldiers of sneaking across the border and planting land mines near a military post. The mines detonated, maiming two South Korean soldiers.”
Wow! Thanks so much, GGail.
WE SEE YOU
Thinking of you, Joey…..
AP the same people that selectively edited an article on the Iran deal? That AP?
Seriously though, polls say this and say that but in reality they mean next to nothing. These same polls predicted a tight election in 2012 and got it wrong yet again. Anyway I know their are plenty of people who dislike Hillary and don’t want her as president, but I’m just fine with voting for her. If Biden runs I’ll vote for him in a heartbeat over Hillary, but I’m unsure if he’s even going to do so.
The point is a couple of people who are Democrats in Congress are now willing to go on record as believing she is not handling this well. And you don’t have to be a Republican to feel that way. HRC simply does not know how to quell a controversy. Her invariable tactic is the tendency to dig in her heels. She thinks it makes her look tough but all it manages to do is prolong and complicate the mess. Her devotees will defend her to the ends of the earth but for me, she is running a sub-par campaign. I will vote for whomever is the Dem nominee. But we deserve much, much better.
HRC had the “fire in the belly” in ’08, no matter how she looked at the end of the campaign. I’m beginning to wonder if her years as Secretary of State led her down a different path … more the path of the powerful than the path of looking out for “the common man and woman” in this country and beyond, although she still touts interest. While she was in that role, all she had to do was walk in a room and her contacts around the world would figuratively bow to what she represented. I think she may have misinterpreted that as representing the power SHE had, as a highly placed individual in our government. I’m seeing signs that being President would almost be a lesser job in her mind than being Secretary of State, traveling the globe. In other words, she’d have to “work each day for the American people.” We knew she traveled on behalf of President Obama. Did she? (I honestly don’t mean this to be mean-sounding … just trying to figure out “what happened” to the ’08 candidate. Actually, I’m trying to give her “an out.”)
I think she and Bill are really hooked on making history. I really think that’s the sum of it. She’s talking about being our champion and fighting for this and that but I’m not feeling it. Unlike PBO and MO, she and Bill run in very high circles, always have. That’s why her trite “we were dead broke when we left the White House” rang so hollow and disingenuous.
Sad but true. Run, Joe, Run.
We deserve better than Bernie Sanders. In my opinion that guy would be a horrible president because no one will want to work for him. Biden is the only alternative that I’d be willing to vote for. One other option is John Kerry but I don’t see him running.
Either way I don’t particularly trust the media anymore and trust them even less as time has gone on. They are gaming for the republicans and it’s obvious.
Yes, I agree on all your points.
And I meant to add, the conversation today is mostly about how HRC will most likely avoid indictment. That pretty much tells you how things are going. Not a good place to be in. Do I think it’s being driven by the RWNJ press? Yeah, but she brought it all upon herself.
^^ Truth.
For sure!
Hey Now!
White Riots vs Black Protests
Off topic, but for once, Portland honors its historic African American history:
Wonderful history Judith, thanks for bringing it to TOD! <3
A bungalow on Northeast Shaver Street that was home to Otto and Verdell Rutherford and their family, was named in early August to the national history list. It joins hundreds of other historic buildings, homes and sites across the state.
The house could also be the first historic property in Oregon listed on the National Register primarily for its association with the Civil Rights era.
The Rutherfords led the Portland branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People during the 1940s and 1950s, the height of the group’s push to end racial discrimination in public accommodation, employment, education and housing across the nation.
The Rutherfords were among activists who worked for decades to pass Oregon’s Public Accommodations Act. The law was enacted in 1953 with the help of lawmakers, including then-state Rep. Mark O. Hatfield.
Much of the organizing for the law took place at the Rutherfords’ home.
“Our house was home for my two brothers and me,” said Otto and Verdell’s daughter Charlotte Rutherford. “But for years it also served as the office for the NAACP here. In the mid-’50s the NAACP Federal Credit Union was also started in our dining room. My dad made the speeches, but my mom was doing the work. The mimeograph machine in the basement and her typewriter were the foundation for the organization and other groups, too.”
If those walls could talk, what a story they could tell.
