I love the Instagrams that I’ve seen here but soon discovered that Instagram doesn’t allow you to copy them. Or if it does, I haven’t figured out how. I tried signing up once, but can’t remember why I didn’t get on (probably forgot my password which happens fairly often).

Not too long ago @Interior said something about some other group handling their Instagram account and I was unable to take a peek.

As many of you know, I am Catholic and believe deeply in the Catholic FAITH, though not all the specific teachings of the Church. I love this Pope who has re-energized so many of the faithful.
Which is why it bothers me so much when I hear the GOP talk about how he is playing politics, although one should expect that.
What bothers me further is when the media says the same thing.

The shocking racial epithet hurled at USC’s student body president

When Rini Sampath decided to run for student body president at the University of Southern California, she said some students told her she would never win. She was a young woman and a minority, and she was running on a ticket with another woman, who was also a minority.

Their advice? Choose a white, male student as your running mate.

Sampath, 21, is no stranger to discrimination. She was born in Theni, a district in Tamil Nadu state in India, and she moved to America when she was 6. Classmates in Arizona asked whether her mom was from Mars, she said. Others told her she couldn’t play with them.

Why? Because she had brown skin.

“I had self-esteem issues because I was an immigrant,” she told The Washington Post. “I was struggling to learn English and I was struggling with what I looked like, in a sea of kids who didn’t look like me.”

Sampath and her female running mate, Jordan Fowler, won the election and now serve as president and vice president, respectively, of USC’s Undergraduate Student Government. Still, Sampath said, she doesn’t believe many USC students see her first as a student leader. Instead, she said, she thinks they see her — and judge her — based on where she is from.

Sampath’s struggle — no doubt the same for many minority students, she said — came into focus Saturday night when she was walking back from a friend’s apartment.

Someone leaned out of a fraternity house window, she said, and shouted: “You Indian piece of s—!” Then he hurled a drink at her.

“Once his fraternity brothers realized it was me, they began to apologize,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “This stung even more.

“I couldn’t quite figure out why their after-the-fact apologies deepened the wound. But one of my friends explained it to me the best this morning: ‘Because now you know, the first thing they see you as is subhuman.’

What a heart wrenching story,Rikyrah. The attitudes and behaviors displayed here are repulsive. I’m very glad Sampath and her running mate won, but that’s obviously just the beginning of the story. What an extraordinary and courageous young woman she is.

I am absolutely certain that my talk with my parents (overseas) this weekend will be dominated by my staunch Catholic mother asking me about Pope Francis’ visit.

Our parents had 10 kids - per custom, all were baptized in our father’s Anglican Protestant religion .

I am the only one who later decided to take our mother’s Catholic religion.

So my ” current problem “: I have to provide a strong reason as to why I did not travel to see Pope Francis in person during his visit.

thinking …. and ….. thinking for a plausible reason. I don’t want her to “disown” me

:D :D I say gather all the info you can about the pope’s visit - what he said/who met (with) him/what he looked like (smiling, etc)/any extra info NerdyW or Chips share - and flood mom with so many little tidbits of info she won’t have the opportunity to grill you about your not being actually on site. Plus, let’s face it GCLinda, if you had gone to one particular venue you likely wouldn’t see as much of his activities as you *will* see from keeping up with TOD.

    News Release
Halliburton pays nearly $18.3 million in overtime owed to more than
1,000 employees nationwide after US Labor Department investigation
Global oil and gas service provider failed to pay overtime
HOUSTON — In one of the largest recoveries of overtime wages in recent years for the U.S. Department of Labor, oil and gas service provider, Halliburton, has agreed to pay $18,293,557 to 1,016 employees nationwide. The department’s Wage and Hour Division investigated Halliburton as part of an ongoing, multi-year compliance initiative in the oil and gas industry in the Southwest and Northeast.
Investigators found Halliburton incorrectly categorized employees in 28 job positions as exempt from overtime. The company did not pay overtime to these salaried employees — working as field service representatives, pipe recovery specialists, drilling tech advisors, perforating specialists and reliability tech specialists — when they worked more than 40 hours in a workweek, in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The company also failed to keep accurate records of hours worked by these employees.
“The Department of Labor takes very seriously its responsibility to ensure workers receive the wages they have earned. This settlement will put millions of dollars where they belong — in the pockets of hardworking people and their families,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. “Employers who don’t pay their employees the wages they have earned don’t just hurt their workers, they undercut employers who play by the rules. That’s why we work every day to help level the playing field.”
The Wage and Hour Division’s ongoing education and enforcement initiative addresses changes in the fast-growing oil and gas industry. The agency seeks to ensure industry employers comply with labor laws. The oil and gas industry also depends on many related businesses — trucking, lodging, water and stone haulers, staffing companies and others — to supports its operation. Working with industry leaders, employers and trade associations, the division offers training and education to promote compliance and awareness of FLSA requirements. By doing so, it is encouraging industry leaders to serve as models for industry-wide compliance. At the same time, the division is informing workers and community groups about the initiative, their rights as workers, the division’s services and its availability to review and investigate worker complaints regarding violations.
“Our combined enforcement and education effort protects workers’ wages and helps employers comply with federal law,” said Betty Campbell, the division’s acting southwest regional administrator. “Ignorance is never an excuse for violating the law. The Wage and Hour Division offers a great deal of compliance assistance and stands ready to help workers and employers alike. We welcome and appreciate the cooperation of employers, like Halliburton, as we continue our investigations and educate employers about how wage violations hurt their industry and our nation’s economy.”
Founded in 1919, Halliburton is one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the energy industry. The company has more than 70,000 employees, representing 140 nationalities in more than 80 countries worldwide.
Simply paying an employee a salary does not necessarily mean the employee is not eligible for overtime. The FLSA provides an exemption from both minimum wage and overtime pay requirements for individuals employed in bona fide executive, administrative, professional and outside sales positions, as well as certain computer employees. To qualify for exemption, employees generally must meet certain tests regarding their job duties and be paid on a salary basis at not less than $455 per week. Job titles do not determine exempt status. In order for an exemption to apply, an employee’s specific job duties and salary must meet all the requirements of the department’s regulations.
The FLSA requires that covered, non-exempt employees be paid at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for all hours worked, plus time and one-half their regular rates, including commissions, bonuses and incentive pay, for hours worked beyond 40 per week. Employers must maintain accurate time and payroll records.
For more information about federal wage laws, or to file a complaint, call the Wage and Hour Division’s toll-free helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243). Information also is available at http://www.dol.gov/whd/.
