ROTFLMAO! If you need to go back to the early ’90’s to “dig up” stuff that is already known, while virtually ignoring this man’s tremendous service as VP during the last 6-7 years (which is by FAR a bigger and more accurate indicator of where he stands on any issue and what he’ll be like as US President), you’ve already lost your argument…

I think they do get it, but they’re hoping that the public doesn’t. And that’s why they’re deliberately skipping over his tenure as VP in the most recent years. Because it would highlight how much he has evolved on important issues - and they don’t want the voters to know that.

The VP will have to address this obviously. It was a long time ago though. And his wonderful work with the Violence Against Woman Act will immunize him. He has made lots of friends in the community who works on the Violence Against Woman and I’m sure they’ll come out in defending him.

In democratic circles, his work and his passion for that law and its implementation are WELL KNOWN. Hillary and Bill Clinton are VERY WELL AWARE OF HIS WORK. The Hillary team is playing dirty politics here. And they’re trying to scare him. Means THEY are scared. Big time.

      Disgusted, but not surprised.

Last note: Unfortunate coincidence that the film about Anita Hill is coming out this year. I hope it’s a coincidence.

LP, Joe Biden is a very smart man who knows all the traps that are being set for him. I have no doubt that he will address every criticism head on with intelligence and sincerity. Our VP walked with PBO through all the unholy, outrageous, racist and ugly slurs and smears that were hurled against him. If he decides to run, he’ll know exactly what he has to confront.

Political theatre. Sorry I don’t believe McConnell will negotiate in good faith. This is all about “appearing” to negotiate. Then make it seems as if President Obama and democrats don’t want to compromise. Or, they’ll make them compromise on some things in order to make the “emoprogs” angry, and then they’ll get out the negotiations and will put the blame on the President .

I am absolutely, absolutely convinced that McConnell only has politics in mind.

But I loved that guy and how he got young people involved in science, just like Carl Sagan did for him, long before Barack Obama became President, and this has been a big disappointment to me (and it’s “all about me”). In the past, the Obama administration has fiercely opposed the repeal effort. I’d like to see where the $87B in lost revenue will come from.

Remember, the Cadillac Tax is a separate provision of ACA that creates a new tax on so-called “Cadillac” insurance plans provided by employers. Beginning in 2018, plans valued at $10,200 for individual coverage or $27,500 for family policies will be subject to an excise tax of 40% on the value of the plan that exceeds those thresholds. The tax will be levied on insurers and self-insured employers, NOT directly on employees. Again, this is an excise tax on 40% of the excess of the threshold, not 40% of the entire plan value.

So why the tax? The overall intended consequence is to help lower costs over time. (One of the problems is overuse of “Cadillac” health care benefits, which drives the cost up for the uninsured or those on other plans.) So I think some of the rationale for the Cadillac tax is based on some extensive studies that show high-cost health plans do not necessarily provide unusually rich benefits to enrollees.

    • 66 57andfemale
      September 29, 2025 at 4:33 pm

      Excellent explanation, meta.

I have friends with Cadillac plans and they definitely misuse the system. For every sinus headache my one friend gets, she gets an MRI. And I mean, there is nothing wrong with her head other than the sinus headache. I struggled for so many years with insufficient health insurance, and then none at all for awhile as self-employed. I was terrified if I had needed to go an ER and certainly did not see the doctors I should have been seeing through those years, so someone like her could get an x-ray if she had a hang nail.

The purpose for Hillary’s stance on the Cadillac tax is to court unions who use better benefits as a negotiating tool. The large unions have been vehemently against this tax. I get that, certainly. And of course the effing NYT headline is gunning to create a narrative that Hillary is opposed to Obamacare in its present form.

To be fair, I waited until I heard her proposals. And I heard Hillary just the other day make it clear that she wanted to improve Obamacare and make it stronger, after she praised it. Almost all of her proposals do just that. So this is NYT trying to make it look like she doesn’t support PBO or Obamacare. In this one instance, I’m defending Hillary.

      • 67 meta
        September 29, 2025 at 4:38 pm

How did she propose to replace the revenue? My worry is that over time, tinkering with revenue-based provisions in service of gaining election year votes undermines the core principles of ACA.

I understand the bit about the unions. But that doesn’t help drive down costs. My feeling is we need to stick by that principle so that over the long run, we have a better system that is affordable.

If she has a better way, then that’s great if all the details work out, including sustainable revenue.

        • 68 Vicki
          September 29, 2025 at 4:55 pm

With you all the way, meta.
It is too soon to be tampering with the revenue portion of Obamacare.
To me, it is sawing the legs off the table, partly, not all of the way. Weakening the table while claiming you are restoring or improving it.

Bill Clinton did that to our economy. We all know how that worked out for the middle class.

          • 69 meta
            September 29, 2025 at 5:01 pm

The details matter. PBO’s team crafted this thing carefully over the course of a couple of years. Doesn’t mean it can’t be improved but I do completely trust PBO and just saying that you’re going to “eliminate a tax” in an election year is red meat. So let’s see what she proposes this week and hope for the best.

      • 70 Vicki
        September 29, 2025 at 5:08 pm

57, I know people who exploit the access they have, too.
But I also know people who had no healthcare they could afford and count on, until Obamacare. That is what counts more to me.

In order to make the deal work PBO had very tough choices. Pick at any one of them and you can make a case, sort of.
Bernie is bellowing about being able to buy drugs in Canada where they are cheaper. Hard to argue with that.
Someone, surely, will be squealing again about The Nebraska Exception, which was what was done to get Ben Nelson’s vote.

The net effect of attacks against the ACA this early is sure to be a mistake.

In Biden’s second term, or Bidens, VP first term, I’d suggest running on getting Medicare bargaining power to negotiate drug prices.
Until we are safely back in the WH, my reccomendation is to stress the positives of Obamacare and ignore HRC altogether.

        • 71 57andfemale
          September 29, 2025 at 5:45 pm

I completely agree. This particular provision was not just meant to slow the growth of health costs, but also to effing pay for the program, for which PBO and the Dems get ZERO credit. The unions, however, have used this provision to bludgeon Dem candidates, so I understand why Hillary is taking the position. It’s politics. It sucks, but Dems need the unions for this election. It would be nice if the unions understood what is at stake, however, and didn’t make this an issue. Sigh.

This is not an “attack” on ACA - Hillary’s provisions move ACA in the right direction. Any major program needs this kind of tweaking. She’s not wrong, but this is what bothers me about Hillary: does she not know how this will be used against her and ACA?

Bargaining on drug prices in Part D has to happen. Already, ACA is helping a little - closing the donut hole slowly and all generics are half price in the donut hole. But it is maddening, the way that bill was written by the GOP. Because of “retail” pricing, I will fall in the donut hole pretty early next year, when, for the blissful year and a half I had ACA, I had a decent co-pay on my medications throughout the year. Vicki, I’m a smart woman, I’ve worked for lawyers and let me tell you, maneuvering through this stuff is daunting as all hell.

          • 72 Vicki
            September 29, 2025 at 5:58 pm

            It is daunting. Very convoluted.
            Still
HRC needs to find a way to win union support that doesn’t threaten the ACA. Surely there are other areas to focus on.

Bernie—well, that is hopeless. His whole campaign isn’t helpful. I still hope that the people Bernie woke up will stay awake and vote for the eventual (D) which won’t be Bernie.

Well, it’s unfortunate but 98% of the Beltway still subscribes to the idea that leadership = dominance. That diplomacy and compromise = weakness.

They subscribe to the idea that the United States should be able to bully every country of this planet into submission. Even so-called reasonable and knowledgeable people are unconsciously addicted to the idea that the USA must be the ruler of the world.

The world is changing, evolving. America has to navigate its place in this new world, has to demonstrate leadership in different ways.. Barack Obama gets it. He is the best thing that has happened to the United States in ages. And those fools don’t get it.

Not sure if this has been mentioned. During a well-received visit to America, Pope spreads message of “justice and mercy.” Many of us join him in being against the death penalty, on moral and other grounds, which he also mentions during the trip.

Pope asks for clemency for Georgia woman, facing the death penalty tonight. Today, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole denies the woman clemency, a motion filed via her attorneys.

I would add a cryptic “so life goes on,” here, but - in her case - it won’t. Sorry to hear this, for many reasons, especially that her children have tried so hard to speak up for her, since they believe she totally turned her life around in prison. This isn’t a story about the Pope; it’s a story of how we seem mired in the same bad policies and really must get the laws changed in our country. Yes, maybe this person is guilty, but maybe the next person will be falsely accused.

    So life goes on.

“A Shocking, Almost Certifiable Faith in Humanity”

    // …………………….

In many ways, the President’s speech [at the UN GA] was an affirmation of an Obama Doctrine. He pointed out the failure of domination as a model for conducting both domestic and foreign affairs.

“There are those who argue that the ideals enshrined in the U.N. charter are unachievable or out of date — a legacy of a postwar era not suited to our own. Effectively, they argue for a return to the rules that applied for most of human history and that pre-date this institution: the belief that power is a zero-sum game; that might makes right; that strong states must impose their will on weaker ones; that the rights of individuals don’t matter; and that in a time of rapid change, order must be imposed by force.”

Because of the interconnectivity of our world today, we have to work together in order to succeed.

While I watching the HBO Vice documentary, I was struck by the fact that every single inmate who particpated in the special was smart, articulate, and self-aware. I kept thinking to myself why are these in federal prison? I kept thinking maybe they used unknown actors because there was nothing about them that suggested “criminal” or “antisocial”. I kept imagining them going to work, helping their kids with their homework, playing basketball with their sons, or listening to their daughters talk about their latest science project. I saw men cooking dinner for their families, taking their moms or dads to the doctor or reading the Warmth of Other Suns. I kept thinking I’d love to read their stories in a book. I’d love to know more about that young man who was a straight A student in high school who ended up serving time in a federal prison. I hope Black Wealth steps up to help the AA brothers. But mostly I hope each of them writes a book because we all need to read and feel and understand what they have to say.

I was completely dumbfounded and disturbed by the fact that some of them have these HUGE bills when they get out, like that man who owned the little shop. How is he ever going to get ahead despite trying his best? And the man who couldn’t find a job but who still kept searching and submitting resumes every day. It just breaks your heart. The system is completely rigged against them.

We need job training for them while incarcerated and a transition program when they get out that includes counseling and job mentorship. What we have now is a horrific cycle of despair that absolutely must be broken.

meta, I was surprised by the fees too. I had no idea that they had to pay for their incarceration- or at least half of the cost. How?

You come out of the joint, they give you $40.00, you have ex-con stamped on your black forehead and the only skill you possess is how to calculate grams & the cost of that gram.

What are you going to do?

And while welding is a noble trade, technology is moving at a swift pace, we need folks coming out with other skills too.
