Thanks, Nerdy. I hate that our President and this country has to go through this over and over and over again. Our Congress and state legislatures have the means to stop it and refuse to do so. We have the means to stop it through our votes, but we don’t do so in big enough numbers. And so we descend into a nightmarish national reality in which wave after wave of children, young adults and families are allowed to be slaughtered through gun violence. No other civilized country would stand for this.

Congratulations, Jackie. First time back in the fold after our three week marathon road trip. We actually drove through Roseburg, OR this evening on our way home to Portland in the final leg of our journey. Deeply outraged by this most recent atrocity. I hope the guy wasn’t out to prove that Oregon’s new universal background check law was a mistake. I certainly don’t think so. We need more stringent laws, not fewer. Are you listening, Bernie?

    Thank you NW.
I was so busy today at work, but one of my co-workers (a young man who hardly reads or listens to news) asked me if I had heard that there was another mass shooting. I became so sad. And I just finished looking at the previous post and listening to PBO and I can feel and understand his frustration. I also saw the tweet that Zack posted per PBO’s request for the media to compare deaths and I was shocked and dismayed by the number of deaths by gun violence each year since 2001 - an average of 12,000 per year minimum.

I’m right with you POTUS. This gun violence makes no darn sense at all.

Crushing. Thank you Nerdy, so much.

Wonder if this is the guy?

    The IRA stuff is bizarre.

The President’s challenge to the media, for the chart comparisons, was excellent - of course. I was sending him mental telepathy during his remarks (hey, it takes all of us!) to give Congress a date to get common sense gun legislation done. Like tell them “Oct. 30, 2015” - and dare them not to … publicize it to the citizenry and tell them to watch the calendar. They could get their writers working on a bi-partisan bill tonight - I think there are numerous drafts in the desk drawers of Democrats.

That’s a terrific idea, JO’B, but I think it should be on all Democrats and not just the President. Democrats in both houses should publicly connect Republican inaction with these mass shootings. The time for pussyfooting around is over. Call it like it is, Dems, and stop living in fear of the NRA.

I’ve posted some version of the rant below a number of times and gotten many positive responses and numerous belligerent ranting insults too! (You are an idiot! Mmmm….Ok.) But today I want to add an additional idea: The MSM should cooperatively adopt a policy to release the name of the shooter as soon as the name is known and then never refer to the name again in coverage other than: “the killer at the scene”

Obviously any of the following will take a lot of time and debate to accomplish in a national culture of dehumanized adoration of firearms. There’s probably only a chance for some pieces of sane control. But doing NOTHING is no longer acceptable to the majority of rational Americans. SOMETHING has to happen. There has to be change in this country to address the insanity of gun violence that is ending or ruining too many men, women and CHILDREN’S lives. For the following ideas, please remember: 1) The NRA and gun worshipping fanatics are against ALL controls. They won’t accept ANYTHING but unlimited ownership and access to all types of hand-held instant death devices (HHIDDs), 2) Every one of the ideas below ALLOWS for continued private ownership of guns, and 3) If you are a gun owner, which of these measures would be a problem for you? Maybe certain ideas, but ALL OF THEM? Why would a sane, responsible gun owner be opposed to ALL measures for safety and control?

    A few ideas:

    1. Strict criminal and psychiatric background checks for gun purchases with a 30 day waiting period. Dealers that violate have their licenses permanently revoked. Dealers found to be in willful violation face criminal charges and jail time.
    2. A permanent ban on all gun show sales, and private party sales. Sales will only happen through closely regulated and monitored dealers.
    3. Registration of all guns by owners with annual renewal required. Stiff penalties for violations.
    4. Owners required to carry $500,000 liability insurance for each gun. Stiff penalties for violations. Insurance is require on automobiles, why not something as deadly as HHIDDs?
    5. An immediate ban on private ownership of military weapons and ammunition.
    6. Strict and sane limits on the number of guns that can be purchased and possessed by each person.
    7. Freeze on all manufacture of guns until the manufacturer retools to produce only guns with valid and approved security features (biometric lock-outs etc.).
    8. Freeze on all manufacture of ammunition until manufacturers re-tool to produce only traceable ammunition.
    9. Strict and sane limits on the amount of ammunition per gun that can be purchased and possessed.
    10. A massive national gun and ammunition buy-back program with collected guns and ammunition going for destruction within 30 days. I’d happily pay more taxes for years for that program! This was done on a large scale and very successfully in Australia.
    11. A sustained and multi-faceted national education program on the inherent danger of guns. It would emphasize the enormous toll of lost and ruined lives and the virtues of evolving as a society away from gun ownership. Stress how other advanced societies don’t have this problem.

Proponents of unlimited ownership and access to guns love to trot out the old cliché about the person kills not the gun AND we only need to address mental illness. But the quantum leap in the level and frequency of murder and MASS MURDER in America is directly connected to the obscene availability of guns. HANDHELD INSTANT DEATH DEVICES. I am ALL FOR a better system of mental health recognition and treatments. But we must work on all angles of this problem that OTHER ADVANCED SOCIETIES DO NOT HAVE. The insane mega-tons of privately owned guns in this country has very close to ZERO beneficial effects and disastrous levels of destructive effects.

    • October 1, 2025 at 9:36 pm

Excellent, magapie, but then I wouldn’t care if they did confiscate all the guns. Or they could all be kept in armories and owners could only check them out in times of national emergency when they would then function as militias, as originally intended!

    • 23 jacquelineoboomer
      October 1, 2025 at 9:56 pm

Haven’t read your entire comment, yet, but I will. What popped out at me was the gun and ammo buy-back program. Lots of police departments in various communities have done that, with much success. The national part would be great! We’re so busy doing things like every other National [pick your flavor-of-the-month] Day, we could get it publicized fast.

The president asks the media to tell the truth and this is what they come up with.

What I’m about to post is not pretty. But it’s something we MUST consider whenever these incidents arise…

We instinctively feel sorry for and extend our sympathies to the parents/friends/relatives of gun mass-shooting victims and today’s tragic incident is no exception. But we cannot pretend to not be aware that these are oftentimes the very people that take themselves to the voting booths every midterm or off-year election and vote FOR the pro-gun RW extremists in their districts, and then go home and turn on FOX NEWS to make themselves feel good about what they’ve done. Their whole reason for being, doing or saying, is to keep some figurative “Black person” from getting “free stuff” as Jeb Bush puts it, be it adequate health care, or fair treatment by law enforcement, or decent housing. They will vote for a far-right extremist who promises to keep “teh gays” locked up in the closet, not being able to get a marriage license, or to live their lives and love as freely they are entitled. They will vote against a gun-control liberal, or even a reasonable centrist GOPer who is in favor of gun control, to elect a gun-ho teaNUT who promises to “round up all the illeagles and shoot ’em all the way back to Mexico.”

Life can be funny sometimes; and these people are breeding extremism and hate in their communities all because of their own hatred, indecency and unreasonableness. These communities are not ghettos, or slum towns without adequate infrastructure/resources.. or fatherless households grappling with poverty and over-stressed single mothers…They do not have the same arguments of deprivation, poverty, and lack of life options that the gang-members in inner city Philly, Detroit or Chicago have…And the “mentally-ill lone wolf” argument does not fly either. As we’ve now learned, this person may have had enough of a social following to reinforce his homicidal thoughts:

“According to the source with knowledge of the investigation, authorities are looking at social media posts between a person they believe may have been the shooter, and others. The conversation happened Wednesday night on 4chan, an image-based bulletin board.
In it, the writer talks about planning to carry out a shooting. Others egg him on, giving him suggestions on how to do it, and the type of weapons to use.”
    http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/01/us/oregon-college-shooting/

Their one “disadvantage” is their HATE that they breed from within! We as a country have to address hate-breeding culture in these communities or NOTHING will change…we will be going through this same routine year after year after year….
Umpqua is in Douglas county which went 58.4% for McCain in 2008 and 62% for Romney in 2012. Surely, many of these these people probably were scoffing the the last time PBO appeared on TV with his face drawn down and his heart heavy from another mass shooting..I can almost imagine some of them saying smugly…”Get this communist liberal N*** off my screen…Guns are not the problem…This will NEVER happen in OUR nice Town of Umpqua, because we are GOOD PEOPLE with righteous guns!”

The NRA is a problem - yes, but it’s also symptom of a larger issue. There is a MASSIVE APPETITE for guns in this country and for the WRONG reasons, which is why the NRA is thriving in the first place. The media is also part of the problem - a HUGE part of it. Just check out Piers Morgan’s utterly disgusting and disingenuous tweet earlier…my rantings about the MSM’s role in persistent mass shooting gun violence will be for another post - but soon…

Hf, I agree with every word you wrote. Hate, daily promoted and fed by the media, is the source of the problem, along with fear of the ‘other’ and deep seated racism. We no longer function as a nation with a common community of interests. We are provoked by special interests, the media and extremists to fear our differences and to see each other as enemies. Until we find a common voice, a common vision, and a common sense of identity, millions of Americans will continue to embrace the propaganda of the death merchants and the killing industry.

Thank you, hopefruit for voicing this so eloquently. I agree. I can’t wait to read your post about the media’s role when you write it. Especially since the sheriff in Oregon had written the letter to VP that he wouldn’t follow any gun control legislation if it was passed in 2013.

Sen. Rand Paul will report raising just $2.5 million in the third quarter of this year, Paul’s campaign confirmed Thursday.

That haul is a precipitous drop from the $7 million that the campaign raised during the April-June fundraising period. The number comes as the Paul campaign has struggled with lackluster polling numbers, and disarray in both his campaign operation and in some of the super PACs that have supported his run.

    oh, oh,

But Sanders’ vote for a different kind of pro-gun bill is more puzzling—and profoundly disturbing. In 2005, a Republican-dominated Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA). This law doesn’t protect gun owners; it protects gun manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and importers. The PLCAA was the No. 1 legislative priority of the National Rifle Association for years, because it shields gun makers and dealers from most liability when their firearms are used criminally. It is one of the most noxious pieces of pro-gun legislation ever passed. And Bernie Sanders voted for it. (Sanders’ campaign has not replied to a request for comment.)

    ///

The PLCAA changed all that. Remarkably, the act wiped out gun liability laws in all 50 states, rendering them invalid except for a handful of narrow exceptions. (So much for states’ rights.) Thanks to the law, victims of mass shootings are barred from suing the companies that produced a wartime weapon that no civilian could ever need. With few exceptions, victims cannot sue a gun seller for negligently providing a semiautomatic weapon to a lunatic who shoots them in a movie theater. Even if a jury decides a gun maker or seller should be liable, the PLCAA invalidates its verdict. The law tramples upon states’ rights, juries’ rights, and fundamental precepts of America’s civil justice system. And it received Bernie Sanders’ support—in both 2003 (when it was first introduced) and 2005 (when it finally passed).

Thank you Australian High Court - we are on the same wavelength

“Anti-abortion activist Troy Newman has lost his High Court bid to stay in Australia and could be deported as early as this weekend.
Mr Newman flew into Melbourne from the United States on Thursday, despite having his visa revoked by the Immigration Department.
His lawyers tried unsuccessfully to appeal that decision in the High Court in Melbourne this afternoon.

Justice Geoffrey Nettle ruled the Department was justified in revoking Mr Newman’s visa over fears the visit would pose a risk to the community.

Justice Nettle ruled Mr Newman may have had a case to challenge the refusal, but said he should not have boarded a plane to Australia knowing his visa had been cancelled.

“Acting as he did means he does not come to this court with clean hands,” he said.”
